  1. #MGChronicle [11:27:21:22] <@Jran-Kri>
  2. The skyline of Nightlight – in addition to the bright white spires that gleam across the city, the towering glass and steel agri-towers of the city center, and the hulking, backlit clocktower – was peppered here and there with the sight of the swooping mono-rail that connected the city. Known simply as the SkyLine – despite really not being that high up, relative to most of the buildings – it had only been implemented in the last decade. At the moment, it only connected most of the core sector and the secondary sector – between the first and second walls. The outer sector – between the second and third, final wall – still had to do with the old, street-level light-rail network.
  3. It was a nice system. Selena had used it quite a bit when she was in university. It was pretty, well-maintained, and clean. The cars were an almost owl-shaped – or perhaps that was just her? – art-deco ovular construct of gleaming silver that shone white in the light of the city. When it was moving, it glided through the air with a silent, gentle ‘whoosh,’ like the artificial wind through the cultivated forests of the agri-towers.
  4. Unfortunately, it was still a public-transit system. Which meant that sometimes, it didn’t move.
  5. Selena was in a good mood, though. She stretched out her legs; the car was decently full-up, but not crowded. She might not have noticed even if it were.
  6. Dinner and a few drinks after her first day on the job – she was still reeling from that! – had been, well... exactly that. She wasn’t one for the real nightlife, though. Enough to loosen up and have a nice time, and be home at a nice hour.
  7. That is, if the car could get moving again. She yawned, which turned into a little hiccup.
  8. No rush; probably just a backup somewhere along the line, she thought.
  9.
  10. <~Wander> ...If nothing else, the delayed car meant more time for any latecomers to get on.
  11. One such latecomer's arrival just so happens to be accompanied by a light jingling of bells.
  12. The pale, silver-haired girl nearly makes her way past Selena before pausing. She does a little double-take, then walks backward a couple steps and gives a small wave.
  13. “...Huh. Heya, doc. This seat taken?” Sonia asks, giving a crooked little smile.
  14. She doesn't actually get to wait for an answer before getting nudged by another passenger that she just clearly backed into.
  15. “Oh, sorry!”
  16. Taken or no, she's quick to claim the spot in the hope that she can avoid drawing futher attention to herself. Funny, given the bells in her hair probably do plenty of that on their own.
  17.
  18. <@Jran-Kri> The jingling sound gets Selena’s attention even if Sonia wasn’t looking for it. She seems equally surprised to see her, raising a hand to lightly wave with wide eyes. She looks a little bleary, but she straightens up in her seat as the girl approaches. An amused little smirk tugs at one corner of her mouth as Sonia is effectively bumped into the seat.
  19. “Um. Yes. I mean – No, no, the seat is not taken. Yes. Please. Go ahead,” she says haltingly. A little snicker leaves her. “Fancy seeing you. Was just... on my way back home. How’re you feeling?”
  20.
  21. <~Wander> “Ah, w-well... my arm's fine, so... so that's good!” Sonia replies, clenching her hand a couple times for emphasis.
  22. Almost immediately afterward, she sighs and shakes her head. For some reason, her bells don't jingle, this time.
  23. “...My instructor wasn't exactly pleased to hear I went to the clinic for a training injury, though, so... less good on that front...”
  24.
  25. <@Jran-Kri> “... Mm. Yes. I suppose that would make sense,” Selena inclines her head, leaning back against the seat. She shrugs. “Probably would have wanted you to... tough through the pain.”
  26. “Still. You’re still... new, you said. Still learning how, um... durable you are,” Selena makes a vague gesture. “Was she, um, really mad?”
  27.
  28. <~Wander> “No, not mad, mainly just kind of... annoyed and disappointed with me?” Sonia shrugs her shoulders, as if that's something she's at least somewhat used to. Or at least she's trying to act like it is.
  29. “She gave me a lecture, but it mostly just consisted of the same stuff I heard from you. Be more careful, try and make some friends I can practice with... and yeah, she said I should really start developing some pain tolerance *before* I'm in a situation where I desperately need more than I have.”
  30. She glances up at Selena for a moment, then promptly looks back down, a blush forming on her cheeks.
  31. “...She also said I shouldn't impose on the docs unless it's something major, since '*the medical staff already have enough on their plates without every bonehead novice coming to ask for a nurse to give them band-aids and kiss their boo-boos better,*' and okay, *maybe* I lied a little when I said she wasn't mad...”
  32.
  33. <@Jran-Kri> Selena bobs her head along with much of the first bit, perhaps pleased that her advice is echoed by someone more experienced than her. A wry smile crosses her face as Sonia looks down, however.
  34. “Well. She’s, um. I mean, it’s not incorrect,” Selena sighs, resting her head against the wall of the tram. “Your shoulder was dislocated. Not quite a ‘boo-boo.’ Although... yes, it was something that would have been treated in the field.”
  35. “She won’t be mad for long. She’s just... trying to make an impression on you. Make sure you learn the lesson,” Selena says, patting Sonia’s shoulder. “Don’t feel too bad about it. If you were still a normal human – well, that would have been very bad. Natural instinct.”
  36.
  37. <~Wander> “I know, she has a point, just...”
  38. Sonia toys with one of her braids. The bell stays silent while she swishes it from side to side.
  39. “...Honestly, I don't even mind if she's mad. It's mostly just the *disappointment* that stings. I keep getting this feeling like... I don't know, like I should somehow be making a way better impression than I am. It's awkward...” she trails off, flicking the bell. This time it briefly chimes aloud, prompting her to sink down a little in her seat as though that would somehow make the sound less noticeable.
  40.
  41. <@Jran-Kri> The sound definitely gets notice, at least in the sense that any sudden notice on a tram can. However, no one seems to comment on it. Perhaps that’s because the thing finally starts moving with a happy little chime of its own as the doors close.
  42. “Um. First impressions are... difficult. I’m... not really very good at them, myself. When I’m not on the job,” Selena says. The hand that had patted Sonia’s shoulder lingers there, as if to steady her. “I’m sure you’re not doing any worse than, well... anyone else as new as you. I don’t think you should... be so worried about first impressions. You still have a lot to learn.”
  43. “...Honestly, I still have a lot to learn, too,” she leans in a bit to whisper with a little snicker.
  44.
  45. <~Wander> That at least gets Sonia to look up and give Selena an appraising squint. After a moment, she nods slightly.
  46. “...Huh. You kind of... I guess my first impression was that you seemed like someone who had everything... sort of figured out?”
  47. She scratches her cheek.
  48. “...Though I guess maybe I'm just used to getting that impression from adults, regardless of whether it's accurate or not.”
