  943.
  944. PARKS
  945. So if it goes off, there's not
  946. pieces of me inside of you. Plus,

  1255. JAMES
  1256. WHERE ARE THEY?!
  1257.
1258. He flips Torres on his back.
  1259.
  1260. PARKS
  1261. You fucking recognize me?
  1262.
  1263. TORRES
1264. Yeah, you should be dead.
  1265.
  1266. JAMES
1267. You'll be fucking dead if you don't
1268. tell me where they keep the cat
  1269. girls!
  1270.

  1275.
  1276. Parks glares at him.
  1277.
  1278. PARKS (CONT’D)
  1279. I want answers. Where's your
  1280. partner?
  1281.
1282. He takes out his badge and keeps it in the direction of the
  1283. approaching cruiser.
  1284.
  1285. TORRES
1286. Fuck you cabron, I don't need to
1287. tell you shit. Besides, my ride's
  1288. on its way here.
  1289.
1290. A cruiser pulls up with two officers. They get out of their
1291. cruiser. One runs over to James.
  1292.
  1293. IND OFFICER 3
  1294. Sir, step back.
  1295.
1296. James goes to his car and watches this.
  1297.
  1298. JAMES
1299. He knows where the cat girls are,
1300. don't let him get away with that
  1301. knowledge!
  1302.
  1303. IND OFFICER 1
1304. We won't sir, just stand back.
  1305.
1306. A small army of cruisers shows up behind them.
  1307.
  1308. TORRES
1309. Don't leave me down here, I can
  1310. fucking stand, if I didn't have
1311. these cuffs I could probably beat
1312. the shit out of you, wey!
  1313.
  1314. Parks just watches this.
  1315.
  1316. PARKS
1317. You never answered my question.
  1318.
  1319. TORRES
1320. My answer is, "Fuck you."
  1321.
  1322. Parks rolls his eyes.
  1323.
1324. His hands shake in anger.
  1325.
1326. Another cruiser rolls up with Stanton in it.
  1327.
  1328. STANTON
  1329. You good, Parks?
  1330.
1331. He gives an "okay" hand symbol.
  1332.
  1333. STANTON (CONT’D)
  1334. The hell happened?
  1335.
  1336. Parks points at James.
  1337.
  1338. JAMES
1339. Army buddy happened to be driving

  1341. got hit.
  1342.
  1343. Stanton nods.
  1344.
  1345. STANTON
1346. Better hope he doesn't sue.
  1347.
1348. James just stands there with the officer.
  1349.
  1350. Stanton thumbs his radio.
  1351.
  1352. STANTON (CONT’D)
  1353. (into radio)
  1354. Dispatch, requesting an additional

  1356.
1357. Parks watches as three suburbans with lights and sirens start
  1358. advancing on their location.
  1359.
  1360. PARKS
1361. Who the hell are these guys?
  1362.
1363. Stanton steps in front of Parks and watches all of this.
  1364.
1365. The three suburbans stop and surround the officers.
  1366.
1367. One man in particular, SMITH, (late-30s) steps out holding

  1369.
1370. Their uniforms read, "DEPARTMENT OF HOMELAND SECURITY".
  1371.
  1372. STANTON
1373. Who might you folks be? You weren't
  1374. on our channels.
  1375.
  1376. SMITH
1377. Just call me Smith. This individual
1378. is of importance to national
  1379. security, you see.
  1380.
  1381. Stanton adjusts his glasses.
  1382.
  1383. STANTON
1384. He shot one of my men.
  1385.
  1386. SMITH
1387. I'm sorry to hear that-
  1388.
  1389. STANTON
  1390. I'm sorry ain't exactly going to
  1391. cut it.
  1392.
  1393. Smith glances at Parks.
  1394.
  1395. SMITH
1396. How's the arm doing? My associate
  1397. White was asking earlier.
  1398.
1399. Two of the agents walk over to where Torres is detained.
  1400.
1401. Stanton takes out his phone. Smith just patiently waits for

  1404. STANTON
  1405. (into phone)
1406. Colin? Yeah, waiting out here with

  1410.
1411. He motions toward the officer to move away from Torres.
  1412.
  1413. SMITH
1414. Thank you for your cooperation,
1415. Lieutenant. We'll take it from
  1416. here.
  1417.
1418. Two agents pick up Torres. He spits in the direction of Parks
  1419. and glares at Stanton.
  1420.
  1421. PARKS
  1422. I'LL FUCK YOU UP!
  1423.
  1424. Stanton grabs Parks.
  1425.
  1426. STANTON
1427. Don't do this, not here.
  1428.
1429. Smith looks back at him.
  1430.
  1431. SMITH
1432. These feelings are normal, officer.
1433. Anger is a normal emotion in the
  1434. grieving process.
  1435.
1436. Parks watches as the agents get into their vehicles and drive
  1437. off.
  1438.
1439. A few tears roll down his eyes.
  1440.
  1441. PARKS
1442. I was so close, I was this close
1443. and the feds fucked it up, like
1444. they do everything fucking else!
  1445. Fuck!
  1446.
1447. Parks kicks a can next to him in anger.
  1448.
  1449. STANTON
  1450. PARKS!
  1451.
  1452. He pulls Parks aside.
  1453.
  1454. STANTON (CONT’D)
1455. Look, I get it. This ain't easy by
1456. any stretch, but you gotta keep
1457. your shit together. At least until
1458. that arm of yours heals. I'm
  1459. recommending for a promotion.
  1460.
1461. Parks puts his head down.
  1462.
  1463. STANTON (CONT’D)
1464. Just keep it together until you get

  1470.
  1471. Another car pulls up.
  1472.
1473. Someone jumps out of the driver's seat.
  1474.
  1475. NELSON
  1476. WHAT THE FUCK, PARKS?!
  1477.
  1478. PARKS
  1479. My arm's feeling better!
  1480.
  1481. His eyes widened.
  1482.
  1483. NELSON
1484. Are you looking for IA to fire you?
1485. Hell, worse they get you for faking
  1486. your injuries.
  1487.
  1488. PARKS
  1489. But-
  1490.
  1491. Nelson massages his eyes.
  1492.
  1493. NELSON
1494. Please get better Parks. Go home.

  1507. PARKS (CONT’D)
1508. What the fuck is wrong with you?
  1509.
1510. Parks looks at the police scanner in the backseat of his car.
  1511.
  1512. JAMES
1513. I need to know, Dave.
  1514.
  1515. PARKS
1516. About shit that exists in Japanese
1517. cartoons? If it's fucking real?
  1518.
  1519. JAMES
1520. You don't get it, but these guys,
  1521. they're fucking connected!
  1522.
  1523. Parks glares at James.
  1524.
  1525. PARKS
1526. You stupid fuck! My partner's dead
1527. and you're looking for fantasy
1528. characters?! Tell me when you find
1529. elves with thick fookin' oirish
  1530. accents, boyo.
  1531.
  1532. JAMES
  1533. I have some proof that they're
1534. real, Dave! You just have to
  1535. believe-
  1536.
  1537. PARKS
  1538. (mockingly)
1539. Believe me Dave, they're real!
  1540.
  1541. Parks rolls his eyes.
  1542.
1543. James slicks his hair back.
  1544.
  1545. JAMES
1546. It sounds fucking nuts, okay? Just
1547. stick with it. I'll tell you if I'm
  1548. wrong.
  1549.
  1550. PARKS
  1551. IT DOES.
  1552.
1553. Parks pats his shoulder and his face grows to that of
  1554. discomfort.
  1555.
  1556. PARKS (CONT’D)
  1557. Shit. Hey James...
  1558.
1559. He starts to feel light headed.
  1560.
1561. His vision goes in and out.
  1562.
  1563. JAMES
  1564. Dave?!
  1565.
1566. Parks's eyes widen as a massive pain enters his shoulder.
  1567.
  1568. PARKS
1569. TAKE THE FUCKING CAST OFF ME!
  1570.
  1571. JAMES
  1572. Oh shit.
  1573.
1574. James pulls over and turns on his hazard lights. He takes off
1575. his seatbelt and takes out his knife.
  1576.
1577. Parks begins to scream in agony as he tries to take his cast
  1578. off with one hand.
  1579.
1580. James is hesitant as he stares at Parks, completely unsure of
  1581. what to do.
  1582.
  1583. JAMES (CONT’D)
1584. I don't need you bleeding to death
  1585. in my-
  1586.
  1587. PARKS
  1588. GET IT OFF!
  1589.
  1590. JAMES
  1591. Shit! You coked up-
  1592.
  1593. He cuts Parks's cast.
  1594.
  1595. PARKS
  1596. DAMN IT!
  1597.
1598. James freezes up out of sheer confusion.
  1599.
  1600. PARKS (CONT’D)
  1601. KEEP GOING!
  1602.
1603. Parks starts to try and get the cast off of himself by prying
1604. at it with his hand.
  1605.
1606. James takes his knife and starts to cut his cast out.
  1607.
1608. Parks takes his jacket off. The cast comes free. Parks's
  1609. takes off his shirt.
  1610.
  1611. PARKS (CONT’D)
1612. So fucking hot in here, jesus
  1613. christ.
  1614.
1615. Bandages are wrapped around where he was shot.
  1616.
  1617. JAMES
1618. You think I should call Doc?
  1619.
1620. Parks shakes his head and starts to take the bandages off of
  1621. his shoulder, finding it...
  1622.
1623. ...As if it were unscathed by the round that had struck him.
  1624. All that's left is a scar.
  1625.
1626. Parks takes a deep breath.
  1627.
  1628. PARKS
1629. What the fuck was that man?
  1630.
1631. James just shrugs, his eyes widened.
  1632.
1633. Parks puts his shirt back on.
  1634.
  1635. PARKS (CONT’D)
  1636. Get me home.
  1637.

1642. steps out of James's car.
  1643.
  1644. JAMES
1645. You gonna be good man?
  1646.
1647. Parks stretches out his left arm. A loud "pop" comes out of
1648. it as he straightens it out.
  1649.
  1650. PARKS
1651. Your guess is as good as mine.
  1652.
1653. James just looks at this, completely astounded.
  1654.
  1655. JAMES
1656. You are one lucky son of a bitch,
1657. Davey. If only the guys back then
1658. had the luck you do.
  1659.
  1660. PARKS
  1661. It doesn't change anything.
  1662.
  1663.

  1670.
  1671. ELENA
  1672. I'm in the kitchen!
  1673.
  1674. PARKS
1675. ...I need to show you something.
  1676.
1677. Elena walks through the kitchen.
  1678.
1679. Parks turns on the light.
  1680.
1681. Elena's jaw drops as she looks at his arm.
  1682.
  1683. ELENA
  1684. Your arm...
  1685.
1686. Parks stretches out his formerly damaged left arm.
  1687.
  1688. PARKS
  1689. I don't know.
  1690.
1691. She walks over to Parks and holds him.
  1692.
  1693. ELENA
1694. They said you weren't going to make
  1695. it, Dave.
  1696.
1697. Parks closes his eyes and holds her.
  1698.
1699. He kisses her on the forehead and holds her tight.
  1700.
  1701. ELENA (CONT’D)
  1702. Lance's funeral's tomorrow. I got
1703. your dress uniform dry cleaned.
  1704.
1705. With a sigh, Parks's hands hold her tighter as he leans into
  1706. her neck.
  1707.
1708. He sits there in silence as he holds her.
  1709.
  1710. PARKS
1711. You know I gotta talk to his
1712. wife... It should have been me,
  1713. Elena.
  1714.
  1715. ELENA
  1716. Dave. You made it.
  1717.
1718. Parks sobs as he holds her.
  1719.
  1720. FADE TO BLACK.
  1721.
  1722.
  1723. INT. PARKS'S HOUSE - DAY
  1724.
1725. Parks puts on his dress uniform.
  1726.
1727. His face looks weary as the world around him seems to move at
1728. a different pace than he is.
  1729.
1730. He sits and eats his breakfast. His eyes look haggard.
  1731.
1732. Elena appears behind him and kisses him on the cheek.
  1733.
  1734. ELENA
  1735. I'll drive.
  1736.
  1737. Parks swallows his food.
  1738.
  1739. PARKS
  1740. Sure, I guess.
  1741.
  1742.
  1743. INT. CHURCH - DAY
  1744.
1745. PASTOR HILL, (mid-50s) stands behind a podium.
  1746.
  1747. HILL
1748. On behalf of the family, I would
  1749. like to thank you...
  1750.
1751. Parks sits there in his dress uniform.
  1752.
1753. He's spaced out. The words from the pastor drift away.
  1754.
1755. The world seems to go away as he looks out a window next to
  1756. him.
  1757.
  1758. ELENA
  1759. Dave?
  1760.
1761. Parks takes a deep breath and snaps out of his trance.
  1762.
  1763. ELENA (CONT’D)
1764. They want you to say a few words.
  1765.
  1766. Parks nods.
  1767.
  1768. PARKS
1769. Yeah, uh... Yeah, I'll do that.
  1770. Sorry.
  1771.
1772. The eyes of the congregation fix themselves onto Parks.
  1773.
1774. Parks makes his way up to the podium. He takes out a set of
1775. notecards. His hands shake as he looks up at the crowd.
  1776.
  1777. PARKS (CONT’D)
  1778. (into mic)
1779. You guys can hear me alright?
  1780.
1781. He looks at the front row of pews which give him a thumbs up
  1782. and a smile.
  1783.
  1784. PARKS (CONT’D)
  1785. Roger that...
  1786.
1787. He starts to rearrange his notecards.
  1788.
  1789. PARKS (CONT’D)
1790. Lance Hawkins was 21 when he taken
1791. away from us. To me, he seemed a
  1792. lot older than that.
  1793.
1794. He tries to force a smile as he looks back down at his cards,
1795. then back at the audience.
  1796.
  1797. Parks sighs.
  1798.
  1799. PARKS (CONT’D)
  1800. He was however, young,
  1801. inexperienced, and struggled. He
  1802. was stupid.
  1803.
1804. A gasp from the audience as they begin to murmur amongst
  1805. themselves.
  1806.
1807. Sergeant Steele and Nelson are in the audience. Nelson's eyes
1808. widen and he massages his eyes. Steele jots down some more
  1809. notes.
  1810.
  1811. PARKS (CONT’D)
1812. He'd made mistakes. I was hard on
1813. him and so were all the others who
1814. worked with him during his field
  1815. training period.
  1816.
1817. Parks takes another breath. His hands almost freeze up and he
1818. has to move the cards that he just spoke aside.
  1819.
  1820. PARKS (CONT’D)
1821. However, and Mrs. Hawkins please
1822. correct me if I'm wrong- He was
1823. often times trying to correct
1824. himself in his mistakes. He'd go
1825. through notepads, and I noticed
1826. that at the end of them he'd have a
  1827. set of goals.
  1828.
  1829. The audience goes silent.
  1830.
  1831. PARKS (CONT’D)
1832. He'd ask me what he missed out on.
1833. How he could do his job better, how
1834. he could keep both of us safe.
  1835.
  1836. Parks chuckles.
  1837.
  1838. PARKS (CONT’D)
1839. He was obsessive with his notes and
1840. trying to better himself as an
1841. officer. Even in his final moments,
1842. he was listening to me, using
  1843. everything he learned...
  1844.
1845. Parks looks down and sets his notecards aside.
  1846.
  1847. PARKS (CONT’D)
1848. In all, we lost him. He was good.
  1849.
1850. He steps off the podium and walks back to his seat. He spots
1851. MARK DIAZ, (late-20s) sitting in the back of the room.
  1852.
  1853. PARKS (CONT’D)
  1854. Reporter?
  1855.
  1856. Parks sits back down.
  1857.
  1858. HILL
1859. At this time, I will be speaking
  1860. with Mrs. Hawkins. Refreshments
1861. will be served in the room to my
  1862. right.
  1863.
1864. People around Parks begin to stand up and converse amongst
1865. themselves. Parks makes his way over to Mark.
  1866.
1867. He continues to move over to where Mark is. Mark jots
1868. something down "unaware" in his phone next to Parks's name.
  1869.
  1870. PARKS
1871. You better have a good reason to be
  1872. here.
  1873.
1874. Mark stands up and smiles at Parks.
  1875.
  1876. MARK
1877. Step outside with me, I need a few
  1878. words with you.
  1879.
  1880. PARKS
  1881. Like hell you do!
  1882.
1883. People glance over at him.
  1884.
  1885. PARKS (CONT’D)
  1886. (hushed)
  1887. Like hell you do.
  1888.
  1889. MARK
  1890. See what I mean?
  1891.
1892. Mark puts his phone in his pocket. He stands up and walks
  1893. with Parks.
  1894.
  1895. Mark looks forward.
  1896.
  1897. MARK (CONT’D)
  1898. (whispering)
1899. Look, more people who have no idea
  1900. what you've actually just
  1901. uncovered.
  1902.
1903. LAYLA HAWKINS, (22) suddenly holds Parks, sobbing.
  1904.
  1905. LAYLA
  1906. He's never coming back! He's never
  1907. coming back.
  1908.
1909. Parks's eyes widen as he holds her.
  1910.
1911. A look of shock in Parks's eyes. Mark walks up behind her and
1912. taps her on the shoulder.
  1913.
  1914. She turns around.
  1915.
1916. He pulls out a handkerchief and passes it to her.
  1917.
  1918. MARK
1919. Mrs. Hawkins, your husband was a
1920. hero who handled the situation as
  1921. best he could.
  1922.
1923. Layla takes the handkerchief and sobs into it.
  1924.
  1925. LAYLA
1926. He was going to be a dad, Officer
  1927. Parks.
  1928.
  1929. PARKS
  1930. Dave. Just, Dave.
  1931.
1932. She sits in the pews and struggles to regain her composure.
  1933.
1934. Layla struggles to say anything.
  1935.
  1936. Her phone rings.
  1937.
  1938. LAYLA
1939. Hold on, I have to take this.
  1940.
  1941. She sniffles.
  1942.
  1943. PARKS
1944. If you need anything, just ask.
  1945.
  1946. LAYLA
  1947. Thank you, Dave.
  1948.
  1949.
  1950. EXT. CHURCH - DAY
  1951.
1952. The rain comes down. Mark leans against the wall with a
  1953. cigarette in his mouth.
  1954.
  1955. MARK
  1956. I'm surprised, newly promoted
1957. detective. You don't realize the
1958. shit you've just stepped in, do
  1959. you?
  1960.
  1961. PARKS
1962. Cut the shit, what do you know?
  1963.
  1964. MARK
1965. Well Torres is dead. Someone did
1966. you a favor, my man. Seems like the
1967. responding officers can't seem to
1968. get their radios working, so they
1969. had to use their personal phones to
1970. call up the coroner. Better meet
  1971. 'em there.
  1972.
  1973. Parks's eyes widen.
  1974.
  1975. PARKS
1976. The feds got him last night.
  1977.
  1978. MARK
  1979. (mocking)
  1980. But the feds!
  1981.
  1982. He laughs at this.
  1983.
  1984. MARK (CONT’D)
1985. Oh, the guys in suits! Right!
  1986.
1987. Parks's eyes widen in anger as he walks over to Mark.
  1988.
  1989. PARKS
1990. What the fuck are you not telling
1991. me or anyone on this investigation?
1992. There's a dead cop and you want to
  1993. play Frank fucking West?
  1994.
  1995. MARK
1996. I actually look up to the guy
  1997. myself, but-
  1998.
1999. Parks gives him a death glare and gets ready to raise his arm
2000. as if to strangle him.
  2001.
  2002. MARK (CONT’D)
2003. Okay, okay, look. I'm just on the
2004. side looking to tell the truth, the
2005. facts of the matter, you don't see
  2006. that shit anymore.
  2007.
2008. Parks motions for him to go on.
  2009.
  2010. MARK (CONT’D)
2011. The truth is, there's some kind of
2012. war breaking out. You happened to
2013. be a roadblock in the middle of it.
2014. The dead guy? Guy who got his
2015. brains blown out and caused you
2016. guys to go light up that car? Step
2017. away while you can, Dave.
  2018.
2019. He shows a scar on his neck.
  2020.
  2021. MARK (CONT’D)
2022. Because I ain't built for the world
  2023. you are.
  2024.
  2025. Parks nods.
  2026.
  2027. PARKS
  2028. That's all I need.
  2029.
  2030.
  2031. INT. CHURCH - DAY
  2032.
2033. Parks walks over to Elena.
  2034.
  2035. PARKS
  2036. I need to go.
  2037.
  2038. ELENA
  2039. Dave, his wife...
  2040.
2041. Layla is in line to look into Lance's grave.
  2042.
2043. Parks takes a moment to glance at her, then glances at his
  2044. phone.
  2045.
2046. He turns away and walks out of the church.
  2047.
  2048.
  2049. EXT. CHURCH - DAY
  2050.
2051. Nelson walks up next to Parks as he steps out.
  2052.
  2053. NELSON
2054. Parks, I advise you be careful when
2055. you do things like that. IA's been
2056. up and down your case all day,
  2057. there's a chance they found
  2058. something.
  2059.
  2060. PARKS
  2061. There's always a chance.
  2062.
2063. Parks stretches out his arm and walks over to his car.
  2064.
  2065. NELSON
2066. What happened to your cast?
  2067.
  2068. PARKS
  2069. I was just lucky, I guess.
  2070.
  2071. Nelson just shrugs.
  2072.
  2073. NELSON
  2074. Alright then.
  2075.
2076. He walks out and gets into his car.
  2077.
  2078.
  2079. INT. MORGUE - DAY
  2080.
2081. Stanton waits for him in there.
  2082.
2083. Parks reads off the case file then looks down at the body.
  2084.
2085. Two gunshots to the chest and one to the head.
  2086.
  2087. STANTON
  2088. You weren't wrong.
  2089.
  2090. PARKS
  2091. About what?
  2092.
  2093. STANTON
2094. Whatever these guys are, they got
  2095. something going with 'em.
  2096.
2097. Parks looks down at the body.
  2098.
  2099. PARKS
2100. What do we got here, Vincent from
2101. Collateral coming to take what's
  2102. his?
  2103.
  2104. STANTON
  2105. Something like that.
  2106.
2107. He points to the glass.
  2108.
2109. Three rounds sit in the clear sample glass.
  2110.
2111. Parks takes a pair of forceps and looks at them.
  2112.
  2113. PARKS
  2114. That's not a handgun round.
  2115.
  2116. STANTON
2117. Not at all, we're gonna send it up
2118. to the ME, but from the looks of
  2119. it, it's probably .308.
  2120.
2121. THOMAS SCOTT, (mid-50s) runs his scalpel down the man's
2122. chest. The three watch as the incision sows itself back up
  2123. slowly.
  2124.
  2125. SCOTT
2126. As you can see here, Mr. Torres has
2127. some kind of regenerative healing
  2128. ability.
  2129.
  2130. STANTON
2131. The hell kind of freaks are we
  2132. dealing with?
  2133.
2134. Parks watches as the incision closes itself.
  2135.
  2136. SCOTT
  2137. It's nothing I've ever seen
  2138. before.
  2139.
  2140. PARKS
  2141. Christ.
  2142.
  2143. SCOTT (CONT’D)
2144. The skull is interesting however.
  2145.
2146. He takes out an autopsy saw.
  2147.
2148. Stanton taps him on the shoulder and makes a motion for him
2149. to put on his glasses.
  2150.
2151. He turns on his saw and sparks begin to fly out.
  2152.
  2153. PARKS
  2154. (over saw)
  2155. IS THAT NORMAL?!
  2156.
2157. Scott turns off the saw and sets it down next to his other
  2158. tools.
  2159.
  2160. SCOTT
  2161. That's some kind of metal. I sent a
2162. sample up to forensics for
2163. examination, but other than tha-
  2164.
2165. The door opens and slams shut behind them.
  2166.
2167. A man MARCUS, (late-20s) and a woman, DAWN PAULSEN (early-
2168. 30s) walk into the room.
  2169.
  2170. PARKS
2171. Who the hell are you?
  2172.
2173. Marcus has an obvious grin on his face.
  2174.
  2175. MARCUS
2176. Agents Marcus Matthews and Dawn
  2177. Paulsen, Department of Homeland
2178. Security, about to secure this
  2179. body.
  2180.
  2181. PARKS
2182. This body's in our custody
  2183. actually.
  2184.
2185. He bites his lip and looks over at Dawn.
  2186.
  2187. MARCUS
  2188. Oooohhh, well-
  2189.
2190. Stanton watches this in confusion.
  2191.
2192. Dawn passes a paper to Stanton.
  2193.
  2194. Stanton watches this puzzled.
  2195.
2196. He takes a look at her for a moment and just continues to
2197. watch her as he takes the paper.
  2198.
  2199. STANTON
  2200. (reading)
2201. By order of the Department of
2202. Homeland security, you are to give
2203. any details of the murder of
  2204. Officer Lance Hawkins...
  2205.
2206. His expression changes to that of anger. Stanton looks up and
2207. passes the paper back to Dawn.
  2208.
  2209. Parks's eyes widen.
  2210.
  2211. STANTON (CONT’D)
  2212. All yours then.
  2213.
  2214. PARKS
  2215. Wait, what?
  2216.
2217. Parks stands in front of the body.
  2218.
  2219. PARKS (CONT’D)
  2220. Abso fucking lutely not.
  2221.
  2222. MARCUS
  2223. You're really going to impede a
  2224. federal investigation, Officer?
  2225.
  2226. STANTON
  2227. It's detective now, actually.
  2228.
  2229. MARCUS
  2230. Well, detective!
  2231.
  2232. Marcus glances at Parks.
  2233.
  2234. MARCUS (CONT’D)
2235. I'm ordered to secure any and all
2236. evidence by any means necessary.
2237. Even if it means Miss Dawn here
2238. knocking you out and dumping you in
  2239. the desert.
  2240.
  2241. PARKS
  2242. Fuck you.
  2243.
  2244. MARCUS
2245. That's no way to speak to a federal
  2246. officer, detective.
  2247.
2248. Parks glares at Marcus, then walks out of the door in anger.
  2249.
  2250.
  2251. EXT. MORGUE - DAY
  2252.
2253. Parks bursts out of the morgue with a pack of cigarettes.
  2254.
  2255. PARKS
  2256. FUCK!
  2257.
2258. He lights one and puffs on it in anger.
  2259.
  2260. Diaz appears behind him.
  2261.
2262. He steps on a leaf. The sound causes Parks to reach for his
  2263. weapon.
  2264.
2265. With a glare, he looks at Diaz.
  2266.
  2267. PARKS (CONT’D)
2268. I take you had something to do with
2269. evidence being removed from our
  2270. jurisdiction?
  2271.
  2272. Diaz goes wide eyed.
  2273.
  2274. DIAZ
  2275. Wait. Who?
  2276.
  2277. PARKS
2278. Homeland came in with some familiar
  2279. name...
  2280.
  2281. He drops his cigarette.
  2282.
  2283. PARKS (CONT’D)
  2284. Dawn... Don... Paulsen.
  2285.
  2286. DIAZ
2287. Doc had something to do with this?
  2288.
  2289. PARKS
  2290. That's where I've heard that
  2291. fucking name.
  2292.
2293. Parks takes out his phone and thumbs through the contacts.
  2294.
  2295. DIAZ
  2296. Hey, whatever you're doing, I want
  2297. in on too.
  2298.
  2299. PARKS
  2300. No, you don't.
  2301.
  2302. DIAZ
2303. Even if I have information relating
2304. to his death that you may very well
  2305. need?
  2306.
2307. Parks stops his thumb on James's contact.
  2308.
  2309. DIAZ (CONT’D)
2310. This goes both ways you know.
  2311.
2312. Parks just looks at Diaz dead in the eyes.
  2313.
  2314. DIAZ (CONT’D)
2315. Give me your contact card.
  2316.
2317. Parks puts his phone in his pocket. He takes out his wallet
2318. and passes him his contact card.
  2319.
  2320. PARKS
2321. Email me everything you have. Until
2322. then, I have to make a phone call
  2323. to a friend.
  2324.
  2325. Diaz nods.
  2326.
2327. A van pulls out of a gate at the morgue.
  2328.
2329. Marcus sits in the driver's seat, Dawn right next to him.
  2330.
  2331. Parks goes back inside
  2332.
  2333.
  2334. INT. MORGUE - DAY
  2335.
2336. Stanton stands there and massages his eyes.
  2337.
  2338. STANTON
2339. Go home Parks, we'll figure this
2340. out next week. Rest up, get someone
2341. to take a look at you, because
2342. you're not looking too good.
  2343.
  2344. Parks just nods.
  2345.
  2346. PARKS
  2347. Yes, sir.
  2348.
2349. Parks takes another sigh as he takes out his phone. He thumbs
2350. James's contact and calls him.
  2351.
  2352. PARKS (CONT’D)
  2353. (into phone)
  2354. Yo James.
  2355.
  2356. JAMES (O.S.)
  2357. What's up?

2366. You still talking to Doc these
  2367. days?
  2368.
  2369. He unlocks his car.
  2370.
  2371. JAMES (O.S.)
2372. Yeah, kind of broke contact after
2373. the whole convoy incident though.
2374. We talk here and there.
  2375.
  2376. PARKS
  2377. (into phone)
2378. Did he ever talk about having a
  2379. sister?
  2380.
  2381. JAMES (O.S.)
2382. Nah, he was a closed box when it
2383. came to family shit. Never even
  2384. talked about LA.
  2385.
2386. Parks gets into his car.
  2387.
  2388.

2395. Just call him for me, please. I
2396. really need this info in
  2397. particular.
  2398.
  2399. JAMES (O.S.)
2400. Look, I know I barely stand you
2401. when it comes to cops, but doc is a
  2402. different animal entirely. Worked
2403. with him or not, he's not going to
2404. be thrilled you're calling him in
  2405. that capacity.
  2406.
  2407. PARKS
  2408. (into phone)
  2409. Are you okay?
  2410.
  2411. JAMES (O.S.)
  2412. What?
  2413.
  2414. PARKS
  2415. (into phone)
2416. You actually said something sane,
  2417. you're right. Fuck.
  2418.
  2419. JAMES (O.S.)
2420. I'm still looking for cat girls.
  2421.
  2422. PARKS
  2423. (into phone)
2424. Alright then, talk to you later.
  2425.
  2426. JAMES (O.S.)

  2437.
  2438. Elena looks back.
  2439.
  2440. ELENA
  2441. Hey, Dave- What happened?
  2442.
  2443. PARKS
  2444. I'm gonna rest.
  2445.
2446. Parks walks to the couch and sits down. His eyes are ragged
2447. as he takes a throw pillow next to him and holds it tight.
  2448.
2449. Elena scoots over and watches Parks.
  2450.
  2451. LAYLA
  2452. It wasn't your fault, Dave. You're
2453. still looking for who got Lance,
  2454. right?
  2455.
2456. Parks nods. He opens his mouth to say something, but stops.
  2457.
  2458. PARKS
  2459. I can't say anything about the

  3035.
3036. He looks at the box of Lucky Strikes in the cupholder.
  3037.
  3038. JAMES
  3039. You have.
  3040.
  3041. Parks shakes his head.
  3042.
  3043. PARKS
  3044. Whatever, that doesn't fucking
3045. matter dude. What deal? What did
  3046. they pay you for?
  3047.
  3048. JAMES
3049. I'm just supposed to drive you
  3050. home.
  3051.
  3052. Parks cocks an eyebrow.
  3053.
  3054. PARKS
3055. What? That's it? Nelson pai-
  3056.
  3057. JAMES
3058. Money got wired into my account.
3059. They said they'd pay for an Uber
3060. once I got you to your place.
  3061.
3062. James merges onto a highway that reads "I-17 North, Black
  3063. Canyon/Flagstaff".
  3064.
3065. His eyes constantly scan the road in front and around him.
  3066.
  3067. JAMES (CONT’D)
3068. What I don't know is why this group
3069. has a vested interest in you, a
  3070. cop.
  3071.
  3072. PARKS
  3073. Mind if I take a look?
  3074.
3075. James takes his phone out of his pocket and holds his free
  3076. hand out for Parks.
  3077.
  3078. JAMES
  3079. Knock yourself out.
  3080.
3081. Parks takes his phone. The glow illuminates James's face as
3082. Parks looks at the text.
  3083.
  3084. TEXT
3085. 5,000 dollars to get your friend
  3086. home. Sincerely, an interested
  3087. party.
  3088.
3089. Parks screenshots the text and tabs out to James's home
3090. screen that shows a harem of cat girls.
  3091.
3092. His phone vibrates as he sends the screenshot to himself.
  3093.
  3094. PARKS
3095. What made you want to help me?
  3096.
  3097. JAMES
  3098. Well, disregarding the 5k
  3099. supposedly being transferred into
3100. my account, and disregarding the
3101. fact that your position as a cop
  3102. violates the non aggression
3103. principle- I really want to find
3104. out whether cat girls are rea-
  3105.
  3106. PARKS
  3107. Oh my fucking god.
  3108.
  3109. JAMES
  3110. You'll know. One day, you'll see
3111. them and question everything you
  3112. know. I would know, I did.
  3113.
  3114. PARKS
3115. Look, the day cat girls are real is
  3116. the day I eat my 9mm.
  3117.
3118. Police lights flash behind them.
  3119.
  3120. JAMES
  3121. God fucking damn it.
  3122.
  3123. PARKS (CONT’D)
3124. ...Eat my gun... Damn it.
  3125.
3126. James pulls the car onto the right shoulder of the freeway.
  3127.
3128. Parks looks at the mirror.
  3129.
3130. The cars are unmarked Crown Vics.
  3131.
  3132. PARKS (CONT’D)
  3133. Wait a fucking second...
  3134.
  3135. JAMES
  3136. Problem?
  3137.
3138. Parks reaches for his Glock.
  3139.
3140. The officer on Parks's side steps closer and reveals himself
  3141. full of face tattoos.
  3142.
3143. James looks at Parks with wide eyes as he looks to his side.
3144. The officer's arm is covered with tats.
  3145.
  3146. PARKS
  3147. DRIVE!
  3148.
3149. James puts the car in gear and slams his foot on the gas.
  3150.
  3151. PARKS (CONT’D)
  3152. GO GO GO!
  3153.
3154. The one approaching runs back to his car as the other two
  3155. cars pursue.
  3156.
3157. James watches the rear view mirror and pulls out his phone,
3158. then turns the volume knob all the way up.
  3159.
  3160. A grin materializes on James's face.
  3161.
3162. Running in the 90s by Dave Rodgers plays on the radio.
  3163.
  3164. JAMES
  3165. Let's do this...
  3166.
3167. The highway in front of them stands empty as two of the
3168. cruisers try to catch up.
  3169.
3170. James turns the car to the right and takes an exit.
  3171.
3172. Parks watches behind him as the cruisers follow the two.
  3173.
3174. James looks down at the transmission.
  3175.
  3176. JAMES (CONT’D)
3177. Fuckin' automatic... PIECE OF SHIT!
  3178.
3179. The cruisers behind follow even closer.
  3180.
3181. James slows the car down and hangs a right turn right before
  3182. traffic starts.
  3183.
3184. The cruisers behind the two screech to halt.
  3185.
3186. One makes it through and continues to tail the two.
  3187.
3188. Parks gets his phone out and dials 911.
  3189.
3190. He puts the phone to his ear. He looks at his phone.
  3191.
  3192. PARKS
  3193. I got no reception!
  3194.
  3195. JAMES
  3196. Got it!
  3197.
3198. The cruiser continues to follow.
  3199.
3200. James looks at the road around him as it tails them.
  3201.
3202. Parks raises his handgun and raises it toward the cruiser.
  3203.
  3204. PARKS
  3205. I don't think I can do this James!
  3206.
  3207. JAMES
  3208. I DON'T THINK THEY AGREE, DAVE!
  3209.
3210. The cruiser pulls further away from the two and then comes
  3211. back to ram them.
  3212.
3213. Parks takes a breath as he watches the other guy pull out his
  3214. gun.
  3215.
  3216. Parks's eyes widen.
  3217.
3218. James slams the brakes and watches the other car crash into a
  3219. wall.
  3220.
3221. The two watch as both of them get out of the car dressed in
  3222. Phoenix Police uniforms.
  3223.
  3224. PARKS
  3225. Christ...
  3226.
3227. James guns the engine and continues to drive forward.
  3228.
  3229. JAMES
3230. Who did you piss off Dave?
  3231.
3232. Parks looks behind him and holsters his handgun.
  3233.
  3234. PARKS
  3235. I don't know. I don't.
  3236.
  3237. JAMES
3238. Christ. I might be fucking nuts for
3239. chasing cat girls, but at least
3240. people have the common decency not
3241. to shoot me over them! Then again,
3242. if they do, they probably are real
3243. and someone's covering it up.
  3244.
3245. Parks sits back in his seat and takes a deep breath. James
  3246. turns off the music.
  3247.
  3248. PARKS
3249. Do you hear yourself right now? Are
  3250. you this self-aware?
  3251.
3252. James just shrugs and makes a right turn into Parks's
  3253. neighborhood.
  3254.
  3255. JAMES
3256. Whoever is chasing you, you and I
  3257. both need them dead.
  3258.
  3259. PARKS
3260. Wait, wait, wait. You're gonna
  3261. fucking kill them?
  3262.
  3263. JAMES
3264. I mean, yeah, why not?
  3265.
  3266. PARKS
  3267. We need them alive-
  3268.
  3269. JAMES
3270. You saw what happens when you
3271. spring them in jail, some fucking
3272. fed bails them out. This is how I'm
3273. doing this. If it weren't for me,
3274. those guys would've blown your
  3275. fuckin' brains out!
  3276.
3277. Parks sits there and sighs.
  3278.
  3279. PARKS
3280. If those were real cops...
  3281.
  3282. JAMES
3283. They weren't. You made the right
  3284. call Dave.
  3285.
  3286. James makes another turn.
  3287.
  3288. PARKS
  3289. I don't think I'm very good at
  3290. that.
  3291.
  3292. JAMES
3293. You were better than any MP
3294. stateside or in country. I mean,
3295. choice wise. You were shit at your
  3296. job.
  3297.
  3298. PARKS
  3299. I didn't care. Those guys were
  3300. fucking retards.
  3301.
  3302. JAMES
3303. Thanks for giving me my pressure
3304. cooker back. We're even now and I
  3305. get five grand.
  3306.
  3307. PARKS
3308. Whatever works for you dude.
  3309.
3310. The car makes another turn into
  3311.
  3312.
  3313. EXT. PARKS'S HOUSE - NIGHT
  3314.
3315. James's hatchback sits outside the house. The lights are on
  3316. inside.

  3319. INT. PARKS'S GARAGE - NIGHT
  3320.

  3322.
  3323. James sighs.
  3324.
  3325. JAMES
3326. Dave. Rest. Just do that. I get
3327. paid, you solve your case. I go
  3328. find my cat girls.
  3329.
  3330. Parks just chuckles.
  3331.
  3332. PARKS
  3333. Fuck, dude.
  3334.
  3335. The two get out.
  3336.
3337. James tosses Parks his keys.
  3338.
  3339. JAMES
3340. Fucking rest dude. They'll still be
3341. out there trust me. The bad guys
  3342. always are.
  3343.
  3344. PARKS
3345. You are something else, you know
  3346. that?
  3347.
  3348. James shrugs.
  3349.
  3350. JAMES
3351. We're all the main characters in
  3352. our own stories, Dave.
  3353.
3354. Parks just shoots a confused look.
  3355.
  3356. PARKS
  3357. What?!
  3358.
3359. James lights up a cigarette and gets into his car.

  3368.
3369. He passes out on the couch.
  3370.
3371. Elena walks over with a blanket. She holds Parks and pulls
  3372. the blanket up.
  3373.
  3374. PARKS (CONT’D)
  3375. (exhausted)
3376. I need to fucking rest.

  3383.
3384. Parks has the metal briefcase on his desk and scans different
3385. documents onto it. He looks refreshed, his eyes look rested.
  3386.
3387. Parks has a lollipop in his mouth.
  3388.
3389. Nelson walks over to Parks's desk and watches him.
  3390.
  3391. NELSON
3392. How was your break Parks?
  3393.
  3394. PARKS
3395. Can't complain. It was good, yeah.
  3396.
  3397. NELSON
  3398. No trouble?
  3399.
  3400. PARKS
  3401. None at all.
  3402.
3403. Parks gives Nelson a grin.
  3404.
  3405. NELSON
  3406. Any leads?
  3407.
  3408. PARKS
3409. I got one. Looks like someone I
3410. think I might know. I have to make
  3411. sure though.
  3412.
3413. Nelson gives him a nod.
  3414.
  3415. NELSON
  3416. Keep at it then.
  3417.
3418. Parks looks at a file folder.

  3437.
  3438. Parks shakes his head.
  3439.
  3440. PARKS (CONT’D)
3441. Got nothing to fucking link them

  3443.
  3444. His eyes widen.
  3445.
3446. Parks takes out his phone. He looks through his contacts.
  3447.
3448. "Doc, contact in case of emergency" sits as one of the
  3449. contacts there.
  3450.
  3451. PARKS (CONT’D)
3452. Fuck, man... Worst I can be is
  3453. wrong, right?
  3454.
3455. He looks at the contact for a moment.
  3456.
3457. Parks looks down in discomfort as he looks at the phone. He
3458. puts it down and gets on his computer.
  3459.
  3460. PARKS (CONT’D)

3474. Parks scrolls through it and stops on a post.
  3475.
3476. Dawn stands among a group of other doctors in a corporate

  3479.
3480. With a deep breath, he looks up the address.
  3481.

  3497.
3498. Parks pulls up in an unmarked Crown Victoria.

  3553.
  3554. PARKS
3555. Miss Paulsen? Let's just cut to the

  3557.
  3558. She stands there, attentive.

  3560. PARKS (CONT’D)
3561. Where were you four nights ago?
  3562.
3563. Dawn looks down. Her eyes widen.

  3565. DAWN
3566. Look, I had no other choice, I was
  3567. roped in with him.
  3568.
  3569. PARKS
3570. That's good to hear. Turn around,

  3572.
3573. She does what Parks says.
  3574.

  3582.
  3583. Parks searches her.
  3584.
  3585. PARKS
3586. Maybe you should think about these
3587. things before you get into 'em,
  3588. huh?
  3589.
3590. He places the cuffs on her.
  3591.
  3592. DAWN
3593. This is the safest place for me to

  3595. Now, move.
  3596.
3597. The two move towards the exit.
  3598.
  3599. PARKS
3600. You know what was a mistake? Not
3601. bothering to let me or anyone know
3602. what the hell is going on. I don't
  3603. know what's going.
  3604.
  3605. DAWN
3606. And that's for the best!
  3607.
  3608. PARKS
