- I will now take a moment to fill you with inane mathy rambles of little importance.
- You were warned.
- .....
- 24/7
- It's a phrase used that really doesn't mean much until one considers it against the normal patterns. 'C works 24/7'? Boring.
- Overstated.
- Underdone.
- Literal things turned generality often are.
- Bear in mind that the math to follow is unsound for a variety of reasons and is not meant to be a accurate depiction of populaces, for whom there are too many variables known and unknown to ever fairly judge and characterize. Most people do not sleep eight hours a night, for an example- it's a generality assumed based on averages.
- This disclaimer is because I loathe averages stated as facts. :s
- Let's begin.
- The being in question, the 'she' and 'C', is an omnural being. 'C works 24 hours a day'.
- Because of the hours slept, in one week, the Omnural puts in a full two days and eight hours more than a Diurnal person that sleeps the average eight hours {part of a night, technically, not the whole} and works diligently all week without a social life or entertainment during the waking hours. (Sixteen hours versus some twentyfour hours, with each eight hours adding, over seven days, is fifty six hours, or two days {forty eight} and eight hours.) (Lunching at-desk, restrooms inconsequential.) If the Diurnal took weekends off but still has neither distracting social life and/or entertainments, at a 16:5 instead of a 16:7 as opposed to the Omnural's 24:7, then she has worked three full days and sixteen hours more.
- If the Nocturnal is more literal than the Diurnal and works only at night, though on weekends, then it puts in eleven hours if undistracted every day for seven days. 11:7; this means the Omnural works thirteen more hours daily and weekly three full days, nineteen hours more. If the Nocturnal took weekends off, this is four days and seventeen hours more.
- Rather than attempting to endeavor the factoring of the laziness friends and artists have espoused and maintained as one of their own attributes, or to compute the numbers of a hard working average person with eight-to-ten hour workdays instead of the more generalist given sixteen hours or eleven hours, we'll here continue the aforementioned pre-confessed incorrect example numbers.
- Crucial-but-seemingly unrelated data: The Terran calender consists of twelve months with five weeks each, or sixty weeks, as opposed to Earth's fifty two week varying week-month schedule. This means that there are four hundred twenty days in a year, not three sixty five, and that the choice of generalist phrase given was very specific. 24/7/365 would have been a falsehood.
- 24/7/12 (months) would be more accurate but would also have been a falsehood in this case, as for one week every month, C sleeps day-and-night through for seven solid days.
- During the first four weeks, however, she racked up the following, lest co-workers complain:
- Diurnal Full-Weeks: Nine days, eight hours more
- Nocturnal Full-Weeks: Fifteen days, two hours more
- Diurnal Weekenders: Fourteen days, sixteen hours more
- Nocturnal Weekenders: Eighteen days, twenty hours more
- Even sleeping for a full week, seven days, this means that come the end of the month she's still ahead. More specifically (per the examples) C remains two days, eight hours ahead of the Diurnal Full-Weeks; eight days, two hours ahead of the Nocturnal Full-Weeks; seven days, sixteen hours ahead of the Diurnal Weekenders; and eleven days, twenty hours ahead of the Nocturnal Weekenders.
- It doesn't sound like much for slavish effort, but time does tell. Keeping the same numbers *aggressively* above-norm and on-task for them (albeit discounting the rare all-nighter/all-dayer to finish a project, another reason I wish to emphasize that THIS IS GENERALIZED), in twelve months of repeating figures C is respectively:
- A full twenty eight days ahead of the Diurnal Full-Weeks, a full ninety seven days (in thirty five day months this would be two full months and twenty seven days; in Earth months, three months whether 31-30-31 or 30-31-30) ahead of the Nocturnal Full-Weeks, a full a full ninety one days and twenty hours (two full months, twenty one days Terran time; three months or about three months Earth) ahead of the Diurnal Weekenders, and a full one hundred thirty two days ahead of the Nocturnal Weekenders (three full months, twenty seven days, or four ish Earth months Math was never my strong point. ).
- Still, a month or three more of work done a year. Still doesn't sound like much, does it?
- I mean, Superman can reverse time. :/ But, still.
- Come twelve years, C will be (the better part of) a year ahead of colleagues working at her pace but not hours, and in some cases two- almost three- years ahead. More or less. In all fairness, most leaders and politicians are a given month *behind* date, and catching up is a commonly aspired human goal when given mounds of work.
- C hasn't served for twelve years, however.
- C has served for eighty two years.
- Having started when she had already been a vampire for eighteen years.
- This puts her five or more years ahead, on her piles and projects, as compared to the strenuous efforts of colleagues *assuming that they were also immortal (Elves, Dwarves, Fae, Halflings, bla-you-know) and worked with her the whole time*.
- Makes one feel right special being a day ahead of schedule and all caught up.
- Whether the advance total is years or months ahead at this junction is beyond my sleepy computing skills. You decide/math.
- If you wanted to calculate for an eight hour American worker with proper lunch and restroom breaks, and distractions, as opposed to the rigid unlikely scenarios and compare the results to the Masque- I have no idea why, because that's a scary comparison ('specially if you work in years!) of productivity- you may now do so on your own time. Lemme know if you do.
- 24/7.
- Because it means something.
- /
- 'But wait!' you *might* protest. 'Eight hours a night a week for four weeks is a two hundred twenty four hour sleep deficit, Darth! There's only one hundred sixty eight hours total in one week!'
- Very true, kids (and or ladies and gentlemen)!
- But normal beings biologically take an hour to enter real sleep after starting, and experience varying REM cycles. Sometimes four hours of rest can grant more than eleven, though due to the longer period it *is* more likely that the longer period of rest would garner more REM. A start-to-end full REM sleep uninterrupted is what C has.
- 'Using biology to make up for bad math is cheating!'
- NO ITS NOT BLAAARHH
- Cryptozoology for the win.
