相传，盘古开天地的时候，曾经有十个太阳拥出地面，庄稼烤焦了，河水晒干了，整个人间比还要热，百姓处在危难之中。 有个叫杨二郎的小伙子。他不但勤劳勇敢，而日为人忠厚诚实。他的力气特别大，大得能搬起几座大山；他有一双飞虎鞋，穿上它能翻山跨海，日行千里。老 百姓们都信服他，喜欢他，就推选他当了大伙的首领。 怎样才能制伏太阳呢？杨二郎看在眼里，急在心上，他从附近山上砍了一棵千年古树做扁担，把十二座山装进两只大筐，穿上飞虎鞋，挑起扁担去追赶天上的 太阳。杨二还有神通，他念起口快，现出法相，完全变成另外一副模样。他头顶着蓝天，脚踩着大地，胳膊比太行山还要粗，挑着大山追赶太阳。他迈开流星大 步，从东赶到西，又从西赶到东，赶呀赶呀，他每赶上一个太阳，就用一座大山把它压住。杨二郎担山赶太阳走到了襄垣，他把五个太阳压在了五阳岭下。后来， 十个太阳终于被他压住了九个，只有一个太阳，变得小小的，钻到一大丛猪毛菜后面逃脱了。所以，至今猪毛菜不怕早，越旱长得越旺。据说，那是因为它救了太 阳以后，太阳封它为“不早菜”。 杨二郎见还有一个太阳逃出了他的手心，哪能容得！从五阳向西南走了一会儿，杨二郎本想还去追赶，但这时他已累得走不动了。他坐下来歇息，觉得鞋里有 土，不得劲，就脱下两只鞋倒土，一只鞋倒出个文王山，另一只鞋倒出个周王山，杨二吃过香喷喷的鹿肉，浑身增添了使不完的劲儿，就弯腰挑起祖山和都山去 追赶最后一个太阳 当杨二郎担着两座大山追到渤海边时，恰好赶上了逃跑的太阳，他当即准太阳撂下祖山和都山。机灵的太阳就势在地上一滚，骨碌一下钻进了渤海，使杨二 部又扑了个空。结果，太阳没压住，祖山和都山却落在渤海边。气得杨二郎用大扁担在祖山上插了个大圆洞，就成了透天的窟避山。

Yang Erlang also had magical powers, he chanted quickly, and with his magic completely changed his form. His head reached the heavens, his foot was upon the earth, and his arms were even thicker than Taixing mountains, to which he carried the massive mountains to chase the sun. His strides were as fast as a shooting star, and pursued from east to west and west to east, and every time he chased down a sun, he would smash a gigantic mountain atop it. Yang Erlang pusued the suns to Xiangyuan, and smashed five suns under Wuyang. Afterwards, out of ten suns nine suns were crushed, with only one remaining sun, becoming very small, hiding in a bush of Salsola. Thus, the Salsola does not fear the morning, for the drier it gets the more prosperous it grows. As it saved the sun, the sun honored it as the "vegetable with no morning."Yang Erlang saw that there was still yet another sun out of his hand's reach, which he couldn't tolerate. After traveling from Wuyang to the southwest, he was tired to the point he could no longer walk. He sat down to rest, and felt that his shoes had dirt inside them, and when he poured the dirt out from one shoe, from that came Wenwang mountain, and from the other shoe came Zhouwang mountain. Soon, Yang Erlang had eaten delicious deer vension, and with endless energy coursing through his body, he plucked Zu mountain and Du mountain and chased the last sun. Once Yang Erlang had chased the sun to the Bo sea, he hurled Zu and Du mountain at the sun. The agile sun rolled upon the earth, and escaped into the Bo sea, causing Yang Erlang to miss again. As a result, the sun was not crushed, but Zushan and Dushan were set upon the Bo Sea. Thus, Yang Erlang was so angry that he used his pole to strike a hole through the ancestral mountain.
