To make the proposal clear:

When you create an item,

IF (your skill +1 >= DC of the item) AND (you roll a 1) [which is currently set to auto failure]

THEN Progress is started but with negative points = DC

i.e. If you have >=52 in forging, you only fail a mdamask on a 1. If you do roll that 1, you'll get a progress item that has -53/ 543 points (-9.7%), so it would take 586 points total to complete the item. Auto failure on 1 still applies when making progress rolls.

ALSO, will change the K&I save to only trigger if you are within 20 points of the DC.

i.e. currently, any elf can start a moonblade with 1 point in forging and 100% piety with a K&I god. This change would require 21 points (vs DC 41), so the god save would, in effect simulate rolling a 20 (instead of now rolling a 999999).

This still allows K&I to be useful, as you can have some more flexibility in your point distributions (i.e. only taking ~28 in alchemy to god save on DC35 items).

Most current builds would give an extra point into their crafting focus to make sure they hit that only fail on 1 threshold (currently, people end up going 2 less than max DC)


REASON: Failure crafting rolls on a 1 is the single most awful feeling that Arelith has. Even more so than dying. Which means, people like me end up only taking K&I gods which is unfortunate but I cannot justify that potential time waste (of needing to get coins to replace those lost mats) in doing it any other way.
