I remember a specific shift in my life where my interests went from music and media to the technology behind music and media. I am fascinated with the production behind music videos, how music can push advertising in certain directions and how simple ideas like fashion can be presented in an infinite amount of ways with media technology. I love studying things with this way of thinking, looking past the surface level of a creation and observing how it was made, the ideas behind why it was made that way and the way that this execution pushes the media in certain directions.

I am currently studying Music Technology at college and my favourite aspect of it is the sound in media unit as it allows me communicate my creative ideas into many different aspects of media at once. I definitely feel as if the course I am studying has many crossover skills to the course I am applying to study on: I’m gaining experience in multiple areas such as Foley, working in a studio environment, live sound and working with live performance setups.

I would love to turn my hobbies into a career, I dream of being able to work in advertising for fashion, abstract photo shoots or motion graphics in fashion would be the perfect combination of my current hobbies. However, the great thing about a course like this is that even if I don’t reach my goal of working within fashion, it would open other doors for me such as sound in television or music video direction. My past work experience definitely goes to show that I would fit right in on this course, on November 6th our college course ran a music event for the college and I was appointed the job of designing all of the visuals: from posters to backdrops to tickets. This course would give me the knowledge to extend that to video advertisements, motion graphics for the backdrops, all ideas that I had in my head but wasn’t nurtured by my current course.

I believe the course I am applying to study on is perfect for me. In my free time I like to focus on improving my personal skills, my interests include photography, fashion and music (specifically hip-hop). I frequently post on music forums & post my photography there and I have become quite well known for my Photoshop skills & photography amongst the other users. Most of my time is spent making concept tour posters or concept album art with the photography I do which then turned into selling album art to people on various music forums. Alongside the visuals, I also like to make music myself in my free time, and this music is often sold to others for them to use. I feel as if my current work is already a shining example of why I would fit in with a course like this: I am already working with real clients successfully which has set me up for the real world. I would be the very first person in my family to go to university and my family has struggled quite a bit throughout my life, I am very set on breaking that trend.

I believe that I will bring fresh creative ideas and a strong work ethic to this course, the fact that I’m extremely passionate about the course and its content will only help me focus and achieve my aspirations. As stated previously, the technology behind media fascinated me, a particular example would be how technology has contributed to the advancement of hip-hop and how it has allowed it to branch into many new lanes. This will be forming the topic of my Music Dissertation, which I am due to start in March next year.
