- Writing Section: fourth and final section of the test (after speaking), two tasks
- 1 integrated: 3 minutes to read a text, time to listen to a lecture on the same topic (without seeing the text), 20 minutes to write about how the lecture’s points relate to the text’s (with the text visible)
- 2 independent: read the prompt (a choice question), 30 minutes to write your answer to the question
- ---
- Independent Writing
- The prompt is always a choice question, meaning you choose from among two options.
- - agree/disagree: “Do you agree or disagree with the following statement?”
- - some people / other people: “Some people believe… Others think… Which do you agree with?”
- ---
- Your response should generally be a typical five-paragraph essay
- 1 introduction - (optional general background), explain the options you’re choosing between, state your own position (this is the thesis statement, and it’s the most important part of the introduction), (optional lead-in like, “There are three reasons why I believe this.”)
- 2-4 body paragraphs - statement of each reason for your opinion, details and examples supporting it
- (details and examples need to convince the reader that the reason is true and explain what it means, and they need to convince the reader that the reason really does relate to the thesis)
- 5 conclusion - restate the thesis and summarize the reasons for it, recommendation/plan/prediction for the future

- TOEFL registration form handout - This is all the information you would need when you register for the TOEFL, but you will probably put it into their online form instead of on paper.
- https://www.ets.org/toefl/ibt/register/id - ID requirements
- ---
- Homework: complete page 2 of the registration form, and bring it tomorrow with (a photo of) the ID you will use for the test
- Country and language codes can be found at https://www.ets.org/toefl/ibt/register/codes
