- Okay, I just had a minute to sit down and go through the install instructions. Here's what it says:
- - Installing onto the floppy disk
- As mentioned earlier, using a computer with only floppy disks to play Nethack is very challenging. While it's not completely impossible, it's better to first install it on floppy disks. Here's the procedure:
- 1) Prepare 2 HD floppy disks
- 2) Insert the MS-DOS system disk into drive A and an empty disk into drive B, then boot the computer. Once the MS-DOS system starts...
- A>
- In this state, type:
- FORMAT B: /M /S
- and press the enter key.
- 3) The disk drive will begin formatting the disk in drive B. Once this process is complete, remove the disk from drive B. The disk will now be referred to as the 'Boot Disk'. It's a good idea to label it as such.
- 4) Insert the second floppy disk into drive B and return to the prompt:
- A>
- ...then type:
- FORMAT B: /M
- ...and press the Enter key.
- This will cause the disk drive to format the disk in drive B, just as before. Once the process is complete, remove the disk from drive B and label it as 'Data Disk'
- Next, remove the MS-DOS system disk from drive A, insert the 'Boot Disk' in its place, and restart the computer.
- Once the MS-DOS system has booted, insert the supplementary disk into drive B. Then, once again at the prompt:
- A>
- ...type:
- B: INSTFD B A
- ...and press Enter.
- At this point, various messages will appear on the screen, but the necessary Nethack program will be expanded from the 'Boot Disk'. If there is a prompt to replace the disk, insert the 'Data Disk' into drive A. CG and other data will be expanded from the 'Data Disk'.
- If EMS (Expanded Memory Specification) is available, it can also be used. If EMS drivers are included on the 'Boot Disk' you can set them up via CONFIG.SYS. For details refer to manual.
- After that it goes through the same process for installation on a laptop.
- Then it has instructions for hard disk install:
- - Installing on Hard Disk
- If you are installing NetHack onto a hard disk, ensure that there is enough space before proceeding.
- To begin, boot MS-DOS and insert the supplementary disk into the floppy drive. Then, wtich to the drive where the disk is inserted. (E.G, if the drive is in B:)
- A>
- ...type
- B:
- ..and press enter. Then:
- B>
- ...will appear on the screen. From here, type:
- INSTHD B A
- ... and press the Enter key. Note that in this command, A refers to the hard disk drive where you want to install the game. If you system assigns the hard disk drive a letter other than A, replace A with the correct letter.
- Then under the Start Up! Heading:
- If you have installed Nethack onto floppy disks, insert the 'boot disk' into drive A and the 'Data Disk' into drive B. Then restart. Once the disks start working, a message saying 'Welcome to Nethack' will appear, along with the menu screen.
- Important: At this point, ensure that the display environment setting is configured correctly. If the "Display Switch Setting" for SW-3 and SW-4 (LCD reverse display) is not set to OFF, the character CG display may become unreadable. Even with monochrome LCDs, be aware that the screen may be difficult to see.
- On the menu screen, input the player's name, pet cat’s name, favorite fruit, and select a profession using the cursor keys. Press Enter, and the game will start.
- When you finish the game and wish to restart, use the following command:
- >NTHK
- For Hard Disk Installation
- If you have installed NetHack on a hard disk, first turn on your computer and navigate to the installation location. For example, if you installed NetHack in drive B:
- Type B:
- CD games\nethack
- finally type: NTHKPATH, and to launch: NTHK.
- Hopefully this helps? There is a bit about Laptop launching as well. But I figure these two are more pertinent?
