  1. He found it by feel, gloved fin­gers trac­ing the edges un­til he came to the hinges. The next step was dif­fi­cult to ac­com­plish while un­der­wa­ter, in the dark, and be­ing buf­fet­ed by a fast-mov­ing cur­rent.

  3. Flip­ping up his tri-gog­gles, Fish­er pulled a black-clad flex­i­ble ca­ble from an­oth­er pouch. The ca­ble ended in a tiny micro-cam­era, small enough to fit through a key­hole gap in the hatch. Con­nect­ing the oth­er end to his OPSAT, he fed the snake-cam­era rig through un­til it re­layed a grainy im­age of the me­chan­i­cal room above the pipes. Wedg­ing him­self in place, Fish­er panned the op­tic ca­ble around, and didn’t pro­ceed un­til he was sure the room was emp­ty.

  5. Reel­ing the ca­ble back in, he used the chem­i­cal gel again, burn­ing out the hinges on the hatch. Fish­er slow­ly lifted it free and pulled him­self out of the pipe.
