  1. I figure anything I write here will become pretty well known, so I want to Correct The Record on something. I have now heard two very prominent Youtubers refer to the following bands as the quintessential 'emo' bands:
  2.
  3. Fall Out Boy (lul) (They scream on 1 song I know about)
  4. Panic! At The Disco (Do they even scream?)
  5. My Chemical Romance (they are very Goth, I don't know if they scream)
  6.
  7. They clearly just listed 3 popular bands who have a connection to the scene. Some of the bands don't even scream or nary feature a scream.
  8.
  9. What are the problems with this? Well the biggest problem for me is everyone and your mom was a fan of Fall Out Boy. We only had 1 kid at my school who indulged in the Emo fashion at all, and you know what he listened to? Silverstein. He was crazy about that band. And that's a much better pick for a quintessential emo band. Any of the following bands would have been much better picks:
  10.
  11. Silverstein
  12. Escape the Fate
  13. Saosin (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EsTAcqwZYa4 AWESOME video)
  14. Taking Back Sunday
  15. Underoath
  16. The Used
  17. Hell they could have said Indian Summer and I would have been less offended

  19. Emo is a very interesting subject because there is such a diversity within the array of bands that get called this and yet you can draw a clear line of influence between all of them (yep, from Rites of Spring all the way to Fall Out Boy you can map it out pretty well). It's also interesting how the 3 monikers Goth, Emo, and Scene intersect with each other.
  20.
  21. I was a big fan of Emo before this started going down and I've run into two very interesting bands along the way that connect to Emo. The first is Katatonia, I think they have a connection to the Emo genre which they themselves know about (https://rateyourmusic.com/release/ep/katatonia/teargas-ep/), you can hear it on Last Fair Deal Gone Down and Viva Emptiness.
  22.
  23. In Katatonia I also detect a connection to Southern Rock from the United States (that's where I'm from).
  24.
  25. The second band is A Perfect Circle. They play a haunting type of Emo on Mer de Noms reminiscent of Sunny Day Real Estate.

  28.
  29. Scene and Emo? When I think of 'Scene', I think of the difference between a fan of Rites of Spring and that kid who listened to Silverstein. That kid was a scenester, though the band he liked was pretty legit. When I think of 'Scene', I also think of the Deathcore influence in a band like Escape the Fate. I think of bands like Brokencyde who lack any sort of sincerity. 'Scene' has some kind of connection to Mall Goth in the fashion. How does Mall Goth then connect to something more serious like Fields of the Nephilim? These are critical questions.

  31. 'Out there' many people know me as a Scene girl, that's the image I like projected.
