I don't understand slicing with negative bounds in Python. How is this supposed to work

>>> s = 'spam'
>>> s[:-1]
'spa'

myList = ['a', 'b', 'c', 'd', 'e']
print myList[-1] # prints 'e'

[beginning_index:ending_index]
