  1. "Mother fucker!"
  2. >You curse as the car in the lane beside you cuts across without indicating and forces you to momentarily slam on the breaks.
  3. "Stupid cunt."
  4. >Given that you'd just got off work less than an hour ago and that there were groceries rapidly defrosting in the back seat, it was fair to say that you were in no mood to deal with this kind of bullshit.
  5. >Sighing in frustration as the traffic lights in front of you turn red, all hopes of getting home much before seven o'clock seem to dwindle away.
  6. >You hated having to stay and work late and would much prefer if you were able to spend more time with your family, but unfortunately it was part and parcel of your job, and late nights at the office were becoming more and more common as of recently.
  7. >As the lights turn green, you take a right and head into the suburbs, the densely packed buildings of the inner city gradually giving way to more greenery and scenic surroundings as you enter the residential district in the hills on the outskirts of the metropolis.
  8. >To your relief, you rapidly leave behind the congested streets that were the bane of your daily commute and instead find yourself facing almost non-existent traffic as you draw closer to home.
  9.
  10. >You yawn, the hustle and bustle of earlier in the day seeming to have caught up with you as you take the final turn to bring you within eyeshot of your house, not to mention the promise of a well deserved sit down in front of the television with a cold beer or two.
  11. >Days like this always left you feeling drained, and while truthfully you'd like nothing better than to finish work earlier and to be able to pick your daughter up from school every day on the way home, you knew that it simply wasn't possible.
  12. >Somebody had to pay the bills after all.
  13. Still, the thought of her sitting in the back seat happily telling you about her day brought a smile to your lips.
  14. >Pulling into your driveway, you engage the handbrake and turn off the engine, sighing tiredly as you open the door and heave your exhausted body to its feet.
  15. >Thank God it was Friday.
  16. >Grabbing a hold of the heavy grocery bags from the back seat, you lock the car before trudging towards your porch.
  17. >Already the light was fading as the sun began to dip below the hills, the pink and gold sky on the horizon reminding you of just how late it truly was.
  18. >You set the bags down momentarily to give your arms a rest, but before you can even reach into your pocket to retrieve your house key, the front door swings open and you have the wind knocked out of you as something barrels into your midsection.
  19.
  20. >"Daddy!" Your daughter greets as she hugs to tightly.
  21. >You chuckle and give her an affectionate pat on the head as you once more lift up the bags and carry them inside, letting the front door swing closed behind you.
  22. "Hey, sweetie, d'ya miss me?"
  23. >You feel her nod as she remains tightly latched on to you.
  24. >Making your way down the short hallway, you deposit the groceries in the kitchen before reaching down and hoisting your little girl up into your arms and giving her a brief peck on the forehead.
  25. >She leans against your chest and seems content to rest her head on your shoulder as you carry her into the living room, plopping heavily down into your favourite chair and slipping your shoes off with a sigh of relief.
  26. "Where's your mother?"
  27. >"Upstairs," comes the quiet reply as little Eve rests against you, seeming almost as tired as you yourself.
  28. >You smile fondly and run your fingers through her hair.
  29. >Your daughter had always been something of a daddy's girl ever since she'd been old enough to talk.
  30.
  31. >Switching the television on, you stretch your legs out and get comfortable, wanting nothing more than to wind down after a busy day and hopefully get an early night's sleep if at all possible.
  32. "So how was your day?"
  33. >"Boring," Eve shrugs.
  34. >Short and to the point you suppose, but not the answer you were hoping for.
  35. "Hmm? Well I want to hear about it."
  36. >A moment of comfortable silence passes between the two of you as you switch over to the news channel.
  37. >"We did maths."
  38. >You raise an eyebrow curiously.
  39. "You don't like maths?"
  40. >She shake her head.
  41. >"It's too easy," she replies, "everybody in my class is dumb."
  42. >You laugh, finding her bluntness quite endearing at times.
  43. >She took after her mother in many ways, being both a fast learner and unusually sharp for her age.
  44. "What if they're not dumb?"
  45. >She looks up at you with an expression you can't quite decipher.
  46. "What if you're just really smart?"
  47. >She rolls her eyes, "well duh."
  48. >You laugh again and grin, confidence being another trait she shared with Your wife, who, if you're not mistaken, you can hear making her way downstairs.
  49.
  50. >Your suspicions are confirmed as you feel a pair of slender arms wrap around your shoulders from behind and a kiss being placed on your cheek.
  51. >Turning, you're greeted by the welcome sight of Sunset smiling down at you.
  52. >"Well don't you two look adorable together," she says trying to suppress a smirk, clearly finding the scene before her rather cute.
  53. >Sitting down on the armrest of your chair, she leans into you as you wrap an arm around her waist.
  54. >"How was work?"
  55. >You offer a groan.
  56. "Exhausting... I was on my feet practically the whole day thanks to a problem with the phones, not to mention I had to drive from one end of the city to the other twice to meet with potential clients because you know who didn't turn up until after midday again."
  57. >Sunset offers you a sympathetic smile before leaning down and giving you another kiss.
  58. >"Well at least you're home now and can sleep in late tomorrow if you want," she says softly, not wanting to disturb your daughter who appears to be falling asleep on your lap.
  59. "At this rate there'll be no 'if' about it."
  60. >Reaching forwards, your wife brushes a stray lock of hair from your little one's face before standing up and letting you arm slide out from around her.
  61. >"Well don't get too relaxed and fall asleep just yet," she says, "after all dinner's almost ready and I wouldn't have the heart to wake you up."
