  1.
  2. This quote may be funny, but it doesn't make any sense.
  3.
  4. It's also the most unrealistic, and thus immersion-killing thing in the whole movie.
  5.
  6. We all know the 'broken telephone' game, where you have to whisper a message through a small crowd, and in the end, the message will always be distorted to an unbelievable extent.
  7.
  8. This chain of communication involves NINE (9) people. Nine!
  9.
  10. It has 5 females and 4 males (in matriarchy, fema-fascism always runs rampant).
  11.
  12. Are we to believe that all those people not only repeated accurately what was said to them, but also didn't know each other AT ALL, although some of them are bound to go to the same school and hang around in the same circles?
  13.
  14. This whole thing involves three couples and two sibling relations.
  15.
  16. Also, 'last night' implies very late in the previous evening. HOW exactly does a rumor like this travel this fast in the eighties, without cell phones, computers, email, etc.?
  17.
  18. So we're to believe that a girl SAW Ferris 'pass out' in some place.
  19.
  20. Then this girl told her boyfriend, who of course cared enough to not only listen, but to IMMEDIATELY report it to some 'guy'.
  21.
  22. This guy was then HEARD to repeat the rumor (for what reason would he do this?) by a girl.
  23.
  24. This girl immediately reported it to her boyfriend, who of course attentively listened to this kind of gossip AND also repeated it forward without any kind of delay. No one was going to bed, or rather watch TV or movies or play computer or video games or study or anything. They were just available to always repeat this rumor before the next morning.
  25.
  26. Of course we can assume that some part of this was repeated the next day, but then the message would probably be even more distorted, because the repeater would have to remember the rumor after sleeping.
  27.
  28. Then this boyfriend, after having listened to his girlfriend's rumor, immediately repeated it to his brother (does he do this to ALL his gf's rumors, and if not, why this one? If yes, then why would the brother keep listening to this gossip, doesn't he have anything better to do?).
  29.
  30. This brother then, instead of telling anyone else, or anyone else hearing about this whole thing at this point, proceeded to tell it to his girlfriend (apparently he thought a rumor he hard from his brother, whom had heard it from his girlfriend, was not only important enough to tell his girlfriend, but also in such a detail that it included the whole chain of people involved so far - yeah, guys do that all the time).
  31.
  32. Now, this girl then gossips about this with her sister, who finally tells the female we see in the class, telling this WHOLE thing to the teacher, together with the name of the location.
  33.
  34. Not even one, of all nine (9) people, misremembered the location or the events, but the message stayed completely intact all this time.
  35.
  36. Now, why would everyone remember ALL these details, including the place name, and who told whom what? Wouldn't it be too much of a nuisance to include all this detail every time?
  37.
  38. HOW could they do it in such a short period of time? Remember, these are probably all students, they have homework, hobbies, friends, distractions, things to do - even in the eighties. Did everyone just CALL each other immediately (sans the family members and gf/bfs that were together at the time, which isn't even that likely, considering it's a schoolday next day)?
  39.
  40. Why wouldn't this many people in such a close circle already know each other at least well enough to hear it from someone else, requiring a much smaller chain of people?
  41.
  42. Why is it relevant to tell if the friend is her 'best' friend or just a 'friend', or even mention its status and relation to her? Why does it matter if it's "31 Flavors" or some other place, why would the location even be relevant to the story?
  43.
  44. Why would she assume the teacher cares or needs to know not only the chain of nine people and their relation to each other, but also the name of the place where it all happened, plus her amateur medical diagnosis? Why isn't "I heard he passed out" enough?
  45.
  46. It just isn't realistic that ALL nine people would not only keep the message intact, think it important enough to IMMEDIATELY forward to (only ONE, though, no more!) individual, but also to INCLUDE all this detail about locations and about whom they heard it from, and whom the one that told them also heard it from, etc.
  47.
  48. Let's give the character names, so we can follow the incredibly fast-happening chain.
  49.
  50. Ferris passes out in a location.
  51.
  52. Maria sees it, and tells Robert, "Ferris passed out in 31 Flavors tonight!"
  53.
  54. Robert tells Derek, "Maria saw Ferris pass out in 31 Flavors tonight!"
  55.
  56. Susanna hears from Derek, "Robert told me that Maria told him that she saw Ferris pass out at 31 Flavors tonight!"
  57.
  58. Susanna immediately proceeds to tell her boyfriend, Patrick, "Derek told me that Robert told him that Maria saw Ferris pass out at 31 Flavors tonight!"
  59.
  60. Patrick doesn't doubt the incredible and detailed story for a second, but just HAS to call John and tell him, "Hey, Susanna told me that Derek told her that Robert told him that Maria saw Ferris pass out at 31 Flavors tonight!"
  61.
  62. John of course remembers this whole thing and right away calls Jennifer, his girlfriend, and tells her: "Patrick told me that Susanna told him that Derek told her that Robert told him that Maria saw Ferris pass out at 31 Flavors tonight!".
  63.
  64. The phone call ends quickly, and of course Jennifer immediately goes to Laura's (her sister) room to exclaim: "Hey, drop everything you're doing and listen; John just called me to tell me that Patrick told him that Susanna told him that Derek told her that Robert told him that Maria saw Ferris pass out at 31 Flavors tonight!"
  65.
  66. Laura can't believe - but can remember - the incredible news, but decides to tell her best friend, Simone, the next morning.
  67.
  68. So everyone goes to sleep, they wake up for school, do their morning routine, and Laura sees Simone and says to her, "My sister, Jennifer, told me yesterday, that her boyfriend, John, called her to tell her that Patrick had told him that Susanna told him that Derek told her that Robert told him that Maria saw Ferris pass out at 31 Flavors tonight!"
  69.
  70. Now, if Simone doesn't know who all these people are, how can she remember their relations to each other?
  71.
  72. If she does know who these people are, why didn't she hear this rumor from any of them?
  73.
  74. The more one thinks about this, the more questions the whole thing raises.
  75.
  76. I think it's not only incredible, implausible and downright ridiculous, but completely impossible and unrealistic, that this many people would hear this whole, long, detailed story, and be able to repeat it without forgetting any part of it or getting any of it wrong.
  77.
  78. Or caring enough to repeat it in such a way. NO one, of these 9 people, is lazy enough to just say "I heard Ferris passed out"? They ALL repeat this whole irrelevant mess?
  79.
  80. And it HAD to happen the way I describe for Simone to be able to recite the story the way she does in the movie.
  81.
  82. It makes ABSOLUTELY no sense, this will never happen in real life, and probably NEVER has in the whole Earth history.
  83.
  84. Just to add one small point; from the way she explains the story, it sounds like Simone already knows all the people involved, or most of them, or some of them, so why not go straight to the source instead of letting it circulate in this weird way?
  85.
  86. Why not at least verify the story from someone way closer to the actual event instead of someone so far away?
  87.
  88. Also, what ACTUALLY happened? As Ferris wasn't really sick, he COULDN'T have passed out. Or did he fake it 'last night'? This raises more and more questions!
  89.
  90. I know it's supposed to be funny, and it is - but it's just SO far from 'believable', that my suspension of disbelief just doesn't stretch that far. Bad writing 101.
