Radio Farda is the Iranian branch of the U.S. government-funded Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty (RFE/RL) external broadcast service for providing "factual, objective and professional journalism" to its audiences. It broadcasts 24 hours a day in the Persian language from its headquarters in the district Hagibor of Prague, Czech Republic.

  3. Radio Farda first aired December 2002. Radio Farda broadcasts news on topics like political, cultural, social, and art with an emphasis on Iran. The name "Farda" means "tomorrow" in Persian. Radio Farda's broadcasts have been continually blocked by Iranian authorities over the history of its programming.

Launched in December 2002 as the successor to RFE/RL's Persian Service, Radio Farda advances the goals of U.S. foreign policy against Iran, providing "objective and accurate news and information to counter state censorship and ideology-based media coverage". Radio Farda's new website was launched in 2006 and receives over 3 million page views every month.

  7. Radio Farda was established in 2003 as a joint effort of RFE/RL and Voice of America (VOA). In 2007, the Broadcasting Board of Governors (BBG) decided to consolidate all of Radio Farda's operations under RFE/RL. Then in July 2008, RFE/RL assumed sole responsibility for all Radio Farda programming.

  9. In 2009 Radio Farda's SMS system, Facebook and Twitter profiles were launched. Farda's audience sends thousands of voice, text and e-mail messages and comments frequently on the website and Facebook page. Radio Farda Facebook page has over 25,000 friends.

  11. Radio Farda broadcasts 24 hours a day to Iran from AM, shortwave, and digital audio satellite, as well as by Internet. The station offers news, information, public affairs, and entertainment targeting Iran’s population of young people. It functions as a surrogate but also includes information and interviews that are notconnected to Iran.

  13. Radio Farda broadcasts up-to-the-minute news twice an hour, with longer, in-depth news and news analysis in the morning and evening prime time. In addition to the station’s 48 newscasts per day, Radio Farda also plays Persian and Western music, which is mostly banned in Iran.

  15. Each day, Radio Farda provides newscasts of 15 minutes at the top of the hour, with 3 minutes at the bottom of the hour. It also has four daily original 30-minute news magazine shows at 0130, 1430, 1630, and 1930 UTC and produces three weekly 30-minute news roundtables on weekends that are repeated once. This Week in Iran and Democracy and Human Rights Roundtable explore political and social topics while The Youth Scene addresses health, social and political issues of interest to younger listeners in an upbeat, contemporary style. The format allow broadcasters to break in as news develops.
