  1. >You are Anonymous
  2. >And things have been better for you in the past
  3. >But, you suppose things have been worse
  4. >As time went on and you needed to decide on a stable career, you thought you'd join a security program and become a guard
  5. >Seemed reasonable enough, you're much taller than the average pony!
  6. >Your human physique seemed to have landed you a guaranteed career, how about that?
  7. >Except, you're not really as strong as the average pony, especially the earth ones
  8. >You're not really as fast as the average pony, especially the pegasi
  9. >You have fingers which is pretty nice, but it hardly competes with unicorn telekinesis
  10. >And upon realizing all of that half way through training, it dawned on you that you weren't the brightest creature either
  11. >Yeah, this was a pretty shit decision
  12. >However, it did awaken a sort of determination within you, something you had lacked before reaching Equestria
  13. >You felt like you had to prove something
  14. >You'd gotten enough shit through training and all it did was make you want to prove them wrong
  15. >That being said, you had done absolutely nothing to suggest that they had no idea what they were talking about
  16. >You had boasted about one day becoming a royal guard but the idea seemed to rot a little more each day
  17. >Every god damn day
  18. >Each job you had was more pathetic than the last, and the closest you had ever come to an actual fight was arresting a drunk pony who had had way too much to drink
  19. >What was her name? Berry... something?
  20. >Eh, who gives a shit
  21. >You were pretty sure you had never even had to draw your sword
  22. >Just when it seemed like things were about to take a turn for the aggressively normal, Rainbow Dash had landed you a job as a security guard while the Wonderbolts were on tour
  23.
  24. >The Wonderbolts! Those guys are super important!
  25. >You got Spitfire, Soarin, Fleetfoot if you're a weirdly obsessed fan, and the other ponies nobody cares about, but hey those first two are important!
  26. >Turns out your dreams of grandeur as a Wonderbolts bodyguard were woefully inflated by your sense of adventure
  27. >You should have really taken what Dash said at face value
  28. >You were totally a security guard
  29. >And this was boring as all hell
  30. >You were little more than a glorified barrier rope, keeping the occassional fan from straying too far from their seats for their own safety
  31. >These ponies could be insufferable at times
  32. >During the last show, you had missed the finale because some pony was choking on the concessions
  33. >Like, come on, just chew your food, you stupid horse
  34. >Hay fries are gross anyway
  35. >You stood there a while, listening to the cheers of the crowd as the routine you had seen so many times played out in your head
  36. >You knew exactly where they were
  37. >You scowled, maybe you had just become bitter
  38. >Why would you care about missing the finale of the show anyway? You had seen it a dozen times now
  39. >You were currently in Cloudsdale, marking the second to last spot in the tour
  40. >Yep, Cloudsdale
  41. >The Wonderbolts were going all out for this one
  42. >Regardless, you weren't even paying attention
  43. >Currently, you were propped up against the side of some bleachers, wondering how long you had before the cloud-walk enchantment you had on dissipated.
  44. >Were you supposed to renew it every 30 minutes, or every hour?
  45. >Maybe it'd be better if it just wore off and you met your grisly end at terminal velocity
  46. >...
  47. >Well, that was dark. Maybe you should get out of here, surely there are some sweet bars in Cloudsdale
  48.
  49. >You thought only for a brief instant if you wanted to ask Rainbow Dash to go, before you immediately dismissed the idea
  50. >Right. She was a full member now.
  51. >You looked up, the familiar roar of the speeding pegasi echoing through the night
  52. >You saw the rainbow trail behind one of the suited members and smiled
  53. >As bitter as you were, it was nice to see some people achieve their dreams
  54. >Inspiring, even
  55. >In this day and age, too many people seemed content, and dreams were too often smothered
  56. >If she could do it, why couldn't anyone?
  57. >Enough of this, you need a beer
  58. >The show probably still had an hour or two to go, maybe more
  59. >You doubt anyone would care if you left your post, there are few jobs more boring than this
  60. >You made your way across the stretch of clouds, marveling at how your boots molded to the white surface instead of piercing through
  61. >You're pretty sure that's something you could never get used to
  62. >You walked a short while, captivated by the soft light of street lamps on the flying city before stopping at a bar near the stadium where the performance was taking place
  63. >You guessed that it would be relatively empty since the performance was completely under way and had been for a while
  64. >You seemed relatively correct, there were a few ponies in the bar, more than you expected, but it would definitely make a nice place to stop for a drink
  65. >The sounds of ponies in small talk struck you from all sides ad you entered and you surveyed the place for somewhere to sit
  66. >Your eyes stopped at the right end of the bar where a green pegasus was sitting alone
  67. >And damn, was she a trooper
  68. >Several empty glasses were scattered below her face
  69. >Her head hung low and she didn't seem to be making any movement
  70. >There's absolutely no way this won't be interesting
  71. >Besides, she seemed pretty from the back, maybe the face could match up!
  72.
  73. >You walked over to her, a bit of confidence in your stride
  74. >Think of all the stories you could tell her
  75. >Like that time you roughed up that drunk mare and arrested her!
  76. >Well... that's about the only story you got
  77. >And honestly, the phrasing of that was pretty terrible
  78. >God damn, you're lame.
  79. >Her head moved up slowly, she must have heard the clink of what little armor you were wearing
  80. >She turned, her yellow eyes looking over you before they rolled in disapproval of your arrival
  81. >"Fuck off pig, I'm within my rights to be here."
  82. >Well, she was pretty but you weren't off to a good start
  83. >Story of your life
  84. >You took a seat
  85. >"Did my land lord send you? Look, I'm leaving tomorrow, I just gotta pack some things, okay? I'm not gonna be able to pa-"
  86. >You didn't sign up for this
  87. "I'm not here for any reason. I don't even know what you're talking about, if it makes you feel any better. I just want a drink. Is that okay?"
  88. >Bitch
  89. >A strand of gold hair fell in front of her face before she blew it to the side
  90. >She swayed gently from side to side
  91. >Your eyes fell upon the mound of empty bottles
  92. >You didn't need guard training to know she was way beyond drunk
  93. >She looked over you one more time, noticing the Wonderbolts symbol across your chest this time around
  94. >"Yeah, I suppose that's fine. Unless..."
  95. >She pounded her hoof on the table, gently rattling the glasses
  96. >"Unless you're here to make fun of me! Are you here 'cause you couldn't get with any of the real Wonderbolts so you're looking to screw a dropout?"
  97. >You were so confused
  98. >Dropout? Of the Wonderbolts? What?
  99. >Also Spitfire was hot and all, but you doubt you could ever do anything with her. She would break you.
  100. >Hmmm, that is kinda hot th-
  101. >She spoke again
  102. >"Well... I guess I'm not really a dropout. I wasn't really one in the first place."
  103. >Her eyes seemed to glisten as she grabbed the current glass she was nursing
  104. >"And I guess I didn't really quit either."
  105.
  106. >She hadn't really given you a reason to, but you couldn't help but feel bad for her
  107. >You searched your memories for Rainbow Dash ever mentioning a pegasus that got kicked out of Wonderbolt academy
  108. >She had so much to say when she got back, it may have got lost in the excitement
  109. >And she surely hadn't mentioned anyone like that in recent time
  110. >How does one get kicked out of the Wonderbolts anyway? You'd probably have to fuck up pretty bad
  111. >Maybe this isn't the type of pony you should be around
  112. >To hell with it, you decided your rudimentary knowledge of combat could be enough to prepare yourself for whatever a drunken super-athlete could do
  113. >At least then you'd have a worthwhile story!
  114. "Well if that isn't you foreshadowing an 'It should have been me' speech than I don't know what could be."
  115. >You thought it was funny, but it seems like she didn't agree
  116. >Based on your one minute experience of her, you would have expected her reaction to be anger
  117. >Her ears dropped down and her eyes met the floor of the bar
  118. >"You're right... I guess I am a bit of a broken record at this point. Enjoy your drink."
  119. >She turned back to the bar, taking a more liberal glug from her glass this time
  120. >Well don't you feel like an asshole
  121. >There should be a law against you talking to mares
  122. >Unfortunately, there's not
  123. >You sighed and ordered a drink, turning back to the pegasus
  124. "Hey, I'm sorry. I didn't mean to upset you. What did you mention about you being in the Wonderbolts?"
  125. >Her eyes narrowed
  126. >It was very likely that she thought you were patronizing her
  127. "You don't have to worry about me mocking you or whatever. I'm kind of a fuckin' loser myself. I'm just a security guard for the Wonderbolts while they're on tour."
  128. >She seemed to lessen her aggressive demeanor
  129. "I wanna reitterate that, I'm a security guard. Not a bodyguard. Like, I'm the dude that makes sure you bought a ticket."
  130. >She giggles
  131. >There's hope for you yet
  132.
  133. >"Well..."
  134. >She swayed one more time, catching herself on the bar
  135. >"I made it to the Wonderbolt Academy, and everything was going just great!"
  136. >She emphasized the last word with an exaggerated motion, knocking over one of her empty glasses
  137. >She was speaking a little loud for your comfort level, but you decided that stopping her wouldn't end very well
  138. >She went on for a while, talking about how incredible she was as a flier, before she started to talk about Rainbow Dash for some reason.
  139. >She spoke her name with such venom, and made sure to inform you that Rainbow Dash doesn't deserve her spot as a Wonderbolt, that it should be her instead
  140. >Well that's not very nice! That's your friend after all!
  141. >You should say somethi-!
  142. >Wait
  143. >The pegasus kept talking, but this story had triggered your memory
  144. >Rainbow Dash spoke of a reckless pegasus that could fly as fast as her, one that took her spot as "lead pony" during their paired training exercises before being kicked out
  145. >The story slowly pieced together, and more importantly, you remembered RD's narrative of how she didn't care about harming other ponies to prove she was the best
  146. >This realization hit you like a freight train, and your eyes widened
  147. >You attempted to play it off, but even the drunken mare looked at you quizzically when you drank from your beer
  148. >As the pint reached your lips, you maintained a wide-eyed stare at her and a overly "play it cool" pose
  149. >What was it you thought earlier? "God damn, you're lame"?
  150. >Yeah, something like that
  151. >"You uh, you okay?"
  152. >Fuck
  153. "Yep! Just fine! I'm just uh... amazed that that bitch would do something like that! Crazy! I mean what's a tornado to a few pegasi, anyway? What a bunch of whiny brats!"
  154. >She looked very angry
  155. >Why though? You were agreeing with her, right?
  156. >Does that make you spineless?
  157. >Eh, probably
  158.
  159. >"How did you know about the tornado? I haven't even gotten to that part yet!"
  160. >FUCK
  161. >You should have really been listening
  162. "Look, Lightning Dust, I didn't-!"
  163. >She shot up with her wings, floating a few feet above the ground
  164. >"You know my name too?! Dash told you all about me didn't she?!"
  165. >Holy fuck, you're terrible at this
  166. >"I'll bet you two are best of fucking friends too! You and the Wonderbolts sit around all day laughing at me, don't you?!"
  167. >You wouldn't say BEST of friends
  168. >She was full on shouting now, and what few ponies there were in the bar had ceased their conversations to look at you
  169. >Well, this certainly wasn't going to get any better, and you already look like a jackass so you might as well try something
  170. "Lightning Dust, calm down! Nobody's out to get you! Nobody is making fun of you or has made fun of you!"
  171. >Except last week, but she doesn't need to know that
  172. >You recounted the story once more in your head, and while she had been a mighty bitch, what happened to her did seem a little unfair
  173. >Especially if it reduced her to this
  174. "I think what happened to you was a bit much! I mean, you sure as hell deserved punishment-"
  175. >Her eyes seemed to flare up with rage
  176. >You back-peddled as quick as you could
  177. "-But that doesn't mean you should have been kicked out! From what it sounds like, you were an incredible flier, the best, even!"
  178. >She didn't seem to know how to respond
  179. >It's like everyone had given her a hard time about it since the day it happened, so she expected the worst of you
  180. >But you're not condemning her, not completely anyway, and that has to count for something
  181. >Maybe it's catching her off guard?
  182. >Judging by her current drunken state, she clearly regrets it
  183.
  184. >"Wait, r-really?"
  185. >Her face softened
  186. "I'm Anonymous, by the way."
  187. >You smiled
  188. >She shook her head, an angry glare returning to the forefront.
  189. >"Well, Anonymous, I think you're full of shit! Leave me alone, okay?"
  190. >You couldn't help but be a little frustrated
  191. >If everything Dash said about her flying ability was true, it's a shame she is where she is now
  192. "Can you really afford to think like that when you're like this? Do you even talk to anyone?"
  193. >Clearly, you hit a sensitive spot
  194. >Clearly, she feels strongly about where she is at in life
  195. >CLEARLY, you just made her very angry
  196. >"HEY, FUCK YOU, MAN! What are you trying to say?! I'm not about to get smack talked by the Wonderbolts' bellyboy!"
  197. >You little shit
  198. >She had knocked over two of her empty glasses
  199. >They shattered as they hit the ground
  200. >You were making a scene
  201. >But fuck it, there was a point where you should have stopped, but here you are now
  202. >So keep going, she probably needs to hear all of this anyway
  203. >You stood up now as well, you've had experience yelling at people who were out of line, maybe it will come in handy here
  204. >Was she really out of line though?
  205. >What you said was kind of fucked up
  206. >It doesn't matter
  207. >And she did call you a fucking bellboy
  208. "I'm trying to say that Dash DID tell me everything. And if you're half as great as she made you sound, then you must have fallen far to drink yourself into a coma when the team you should be performing with is putting the whole city in awe right over there!"
  209. >You pointed in the general direction you remember the stadium being in
  210. >If she could burst into flames, she would have done so now
  211. >"Well I can't exactly do that now can I? It's not like I quit, dumbass, I got kicked out! Kinda hard to come back from that! And who the fuck is telling me this? I'm assuming you didn't grow up wanting to count tickets! At least I tasted glory, all you've ever done is lick the boots of your superiors!"
  212.
  213. >Calm yourself, Anon
  214. >Or ya know, don't
  215. >"Fuck you, Anonymous!"
  216. >She stumbled in her drunken stupor, throwing an amount of bits on the counter that in no way added to what she owed them
  217. >She passed through the door, every pony in the bar looking at you for answers
  218. >You completely ignored them though, running after her
  219. >You flew out the door and saw her only a few yards away
  220. "You think I enjoy this?"
  221. >You stepped onto the clouds, walking over to her
  222. "You're right, I never dreamt I'd be in a position like this, I mean for fuck's sake I'm yelling at a horse right now! But I'm trying, God damn it. Dash mentioned how much you went on and on about pushing your limits, that's what made you lead pony in the first place right?"
  223. >She took a step back
  224. >You advanced
  225. "Well I'm doing the same thing. And just because my limits are lower than yours, it does not mean you are fucking better than me! I used to talk so much shit about becoming a royal guard, and while I may be here as a 'bellboy' as you put it, I'm still somewhere! But you stopped. You gave up. Have you even tried to appeal to Spitfire for readmission? Have you tried anything since the day you walked away?"
  226. >She was silent
  227. >Two tears managed to escape her eyes
  228. "I don't even have anything going for me! You ponies are stronger, faster and more versatile than I'll ever be! But you, you're fucking incredible!"
  229. >Lightning Dust looked at you now, breaking the gaze she had on the cloud
  230. >She looked slightly confused
  231. "You beat out Rainbow Dash in the Wonderbolt Academy. RAINBOW DASH. The pony everyone thought was the greatest flier in all of Equestria! She's saved the world a bunch of times with her friends but you come in out of nowhere and impress Spitfire more than she did."
  232. >Silence
  233. "I'd bet she'd give you another chance. I'd bet all of Equestria would. But you have to give yourself a chance first."
  234.
  235. >Lightning Dust sat on the ground, sobbing
  236. >She used one of her wings to cover her face
  237. >You couldn't tell if it was because she didn't want you looking at her or if she didn't want to look you in the eye
  238. >Even though this was probably all stuff she needed to hear, you felt like garbage
  239. >You were trying to help, but she sure was tough as hell
  240. >It seemed like the only way to get through to her
  241. >You walked over to the drunk pegasus and sat down next to her
  242. "Dust-"
  243. >She wrapped her forelegs around your neck and pulled you into a hug
  244. >She was very drunk, you reasoned
  245. >Between sobs you could hear her murmured acceptance
  246. >"You're right! You're right. I'm a fucking failure. I don't even know what I am doing with my life."
  247. >Yikes, this was bad
  248. >And boy, did you suck at comforting people
  249. >You hugged her back, not doing so would probably make her only feel worse at this point
  250. "Lightning Dust, it's okay. You can still bounce back from all of this. And I mean it when I said I don't think this Wonderbolts thing is over for you. There's gotta be someway you can get back in."
  251. >She sniffled
  252. >"You really think so? But, I was kind of a... I was pretty mean."
  253. >You chuckled
  254. "Eh, you're not so bad."
  255. >She laughed quietly
  256. >Success!
  257. >It's a shame she'll probably kick your teeth in when she's sober
  258. >Oh well, enjoy the present while it lasts!
  259. >"Thanks Anon. It's been a while since I've really talked about it to anyone."
  260. >Yeah, no shit
  261. "Well, I'm glad I could h-"
  262. >You fell
  263. >A instance of pure white surrounded you as you passed through the cloud below you and into the night sky, wind rushing past you in a mighty roar
  264. >That stupid fucking cloud-walk spell
  265. >You totally forgot about it
  266. >You could hear Lightning Dust cry your name once as you fell, anything else she was saying was lost to the wind
  267.
  268. >You supposed there were worse ways to die
  269. >Odds are you wouldn't feel a thing
  270. >Might scar a pony or two for life if they see you
  271. >But it's no harm
  272. >It's unfortunate that you just gave a speech about pursuing dreams when yours just vaporized due to being slightly forgetful
  273. >Then again, how do you forget about something like that?
  274. >Your back was to the ground
  275. >You stared at the ever-shrinking city of Cloudsdale
  276. >It really did look beautiful, especially at night
  277. >You could even see distant fireworks
  278. >Probably marking the end of the Wonderbolts show
  279. >You wondered if they would even notice you were gone
  280. >Maybe Dash would
  281. >Maybe
  282. >Your final thoughts were cut short as your eyes met a bright crackle of light within the clouds
  283. >Could the clouds in Cloudsdale have lightning?
  284. >Isn't that something the pegasi could control?
  285. >Moments after the flash, an ear-shattering boom rang out through the sky
  286. >Bursting from the earlier flash of light, a streak of green with a core of gold lightning began to race towards you at an unimaginable speed
  287. >There's no fucking way
  288. >Your eyes betrayed common logic, as the streak proceeded closer and closer to you despite the speed at which you were currently falling
  289. >Even through the rush of wind you could hear the ever-approaching screech of a pegasus at mach speed
  290. >You had always kept a fairly safe distance at the Wonderbolts shows, you had never been so close to that kind of power
  291. >Guess she still had it, huh?
  292. >As your savior approached closer and closer you thought to yourself
  293. >Isn't she drunk?
  294. >There's a good chance she could still get you killed
  295. >Are there laws against drinking and flying?
  296. >There probably should be
  297. >Are you really in a position to argue though?
  298.
  299. >Lightning Dust was next to you now, through the bright green glow, you could see her
  300. >Tears flowed from her face as the wind ravaged her eyes, and her teeth were clenched
  301. >She turned her head, and you made eye contact only for a brief moment before she grabbed you
  302. >This probably went much better in her head, but in her drunken state she couldn't recover her balance
  303. >What started as a grab turned into a tackle
  304. >Her wings flapped in protest of gravity's will to kill both of you, to some avail
  305. >You felt your speed dramatically decrease but you were still falling fairly fast
  306. >You looked down, and the forest below was rapidly approaching
  307. >Before you could do anything to help yourself, you passed through the canopy
  308. >The branches and leaves passed over your body like whips
  309. >Even in this brief moment of time, you were grateful for your light armor
  310. >You felt Lightning Dust lose grip on you
  311. >There's no telling where she was tumbling off to
  312. >You flipped end over end at least four times before straightening out
  313. >The brush had slowed you even more, but your collision with the forest floor was still incredibly painful
  314. >You landed on your side, skipping like a stone before rolling for some time
  315. >You ended up face down in a patch of grass, your limp body maintaining its stillness for fear of agony
  316. "Ugh..."
  317. >You dared to flex a few of your muscles
  318. >Everything hurt
  319. >Everything hurt a lot
  320. >But nothing seemed broken or permanently damaged
  321. >Your eyes went wide
  322. "L-Lightning Dust?"
  323. >You pushed yourself into a standing position
  324. >It felt like magma shot through your veins as you grappled with yourself to maintain a stance
  325. >You called out
  326. "Lightning Dust!"
  327. >No answer
  328. >Fuck
  329. >You called her name one more time
  330. >Silence
  331. >Despite the agony you were in, you ran off, dashing around each tree and surveying the landscape for the pegasus
  332. >She had just saved your life
  333. >The least you could do was make sure she wasn't dead
  334.
  335. >As panic began to set in, you found her
  336. >A few of her teal feathers were scattered around the area
  337. >A trickle of blood matted her fur in a crimson path along her face
  338. >She wasn't moving
  339. >Please be okay
  340. >You ran over to her, kneeling by her side
  341. >Luckily, in training they taught you plenty about first aid
  342. >It was hard at first, taking care of a human was a bit different than taking care of a pony, but the same stuff applied in most cases
  343. >Keep their insides on the inside
  344. >Simple stuff
  345. >Your pretty sure Ponyville would be easy to get to if Lightning Dust could just fly up above the treeline and give you a direction
  346. >Clearly that wasn't happening any time soon
  347. >Using bits of your clothing that you could, you managed to create some incredibly rudimentary bandages
  348. >Just something to stop the bleeding
  349. >Fortunately, as you looked her over, it looks like she suffered much the same you did
  350. >Her injuries seemed mostly superficial, and while you couldn't tell if she sprained anything, there definintely wasn't anything broken
  351. >Well, nothing obvious was broken anyway
  352. >The only injury that stood out was the blow to her head
  353. >She must have taken a direct hit from a branch while falling
  354. >It was clearly why she was knocked out
  355. >You hoped that there was no permanent damage done
  356. >If you and her were lucky, it would at worse be a concussion
  357. >If you were lucky
  358. >It was a pretty nasty fall, after all
  359. >You looked around the the forested area
  360. >Dark as all hell
  361. >There was no way you were getting out of here until she woke up, or at least until day light
  362. >You supposed one night here wouldn't be so bad
  363. >A few hours roughing it wouldn't kill you!
  364. >You looked over to Lightning Dust
  365. >You really hoped that your decision to stay here for the night wouldn't have terrible consequences
  366.
  367. >It took only a few minutes for you to assemble a proper fire
  368. >A few more to actually get it started
  369. >You were actually grateful for Dust's unconsciousness at this particular point, you looked pretty fucking stupid failing this over and over
  370. >Then again, if she were conscious, you wouldn't even be in this situation
  371. >At one point, you had tried to climb a tree yourself to get a view but immediately decided against it
  372. >Every single movement of your body still flared with horrific pain given the proper positioning
  373. >Much to your pleasure, a fire eventually sprung into existence
  374. >Given that there was nobody around for you to act cool around, you made the world know how proud of your success you were
  375. >You were Anon, Master of Survival!
  376. >You sat down in the triumphant aura of the burning campfire
  377. >Hm
  378. >You didn't really have a bedroll or anything
  379. >Neither did Lightning Dust
  380. >Realizing your negligence, you stood up quickly, walking over to the pegasus
  381. >As gently as possible, you slipped a hand under her head and picked her up
  382. >She was surprisingly light
  383. >Guess it'd be kind of strange if she wasn't, you reasoned
  384. >How else would she fly so well?
  385. >Doubtful in your ability to position her against a tree comfortably, you settled for sitting with your legs crossed, your own back to a tree
  386. >You placed Lightning Dust into your lap, Making sure her head was propped up against your arm
  387. >You didn't want the blood rushing to her head or anything
  388. >You had already caused enough damage
  389. >You had to fold her wings yourself to get her to fit, but eventually the two of you were properly cuddled up
  390. >This was a little intimate wasn't it?
  391. >Hopefully she didn't mind
  392. >You looked down at her, the firelight dancing off of her green coat
  393. >You had to agree with your earlier sentiment
  394. >She was very pretty
  395.
  396. >At least she was comfortable
  397. >You thought back to what Rainbow Dash had said about her
  398. >And more importantly, you thought back to what you said before you fell from Cloudsdale
  399. >About how she'll kick your teeth in when she's sober
  400. >Could she really be that bad?
  401. >Against your better judgement, you didn't think so
  402. >You had a canteen of water that you kept buckled to your side
  403. >Removing it from your waist, you placed it next to you, a bit out in front
  404. >She's going to be thirsty as hell when she wakes up, being hungover and all
  405. >Hopefully if she woke up first, she would get the message that it's for her
  406. >You laid your head back
  407. >You've been more comfortable
  408. >You took one last look at Lightning Dust
  409. >But, you suppose you've been less comfortable
  410. >...
  411. >Your eyes shot open
  412. >You leaned forward, groaning in agony
  413. >God, kill you now
  414. >The memories of last night began to trickle in one by one before turning into a flood
  415. >You looked down at your empty lap
  416. >No Lightning Dust
  417. >You looked around
  418. >No Lightning Dust
  419. >The campfire had burned itself out
  420. >The canteen was gone
  421. >Well
  422. >I guess she was fine
  423. >You brought yourself to one knee, closing your eyes in pain
  424. >She had probably gone back to Cloudsdale by now
  425. >You stood, dusting your hands
  426. >Yep, she sure didn't need you
  427. >But that's good right? That means she was okay!
  428. >She was just fine!
  429. >Without you
  430. >You sighed
  431. >Why did you give a shit anyway?
  432. >Did you really expect anything to happen between you and that drunken has-been?
  433. >You looked around only for a moment before deciding on a random path and began limping towards it
  434. >"Hey, Ponyville is that way, smart one."
  435. >You turned to find Lightning Dust holding your canteen a few feet above you, pointing in a different direction
  436. >She was hovering, flapping her wings gently
  437. >She was smiling
  438. >"I uh... I found a nearby river and refilled it for you."
  439. >She offered the bottle to you
  440. >You took it from her
  441. >You couldn't fight back a grin
  442.
  443. >She almost seemed a little upset
  444. >"What are you smiling about?"
  445. >You turned to walk in the direction she gestured to
  446. "Oh nothing, I just think this is a little funny."
  447. >She flew in front of you, backing up as you moved so that she could face you
  448. >She was irritated
  449. >You looked her over, she seemed to have removed the bandages you gave her
  450. >Her fur was also lacking blood
  451. >She must have washed it off in the river
  452. >For the most part, she seemed relatively okay
  453. >Save for a few scrapes and bruises and a particularly gnarly black eye
  454. >She spoke a bit louder now
  455. >"Well, what's so damn funny?!"
  456. >You couldn't help but chuckle, which seemed to fan her flames
  457. "I'm a security guard for the Wonderbolts, so I've clearly heard some things about you. Mostly from Rainbow Dash. They said you were pretty mean, yet here you are."
  458. >You motioned to the water bottle she refilled
  459. "I'd say you've been rather nice to me. Besides, you didn't have to stick around for me to wake up."
  460. >She went red for a brief moment and crossed her forelegs as she stayed afloat
  461. >"It'd be pretty harsh to leave you out here. I'm not that much of a monster. And... well..."
  462. >She stopped, causing you to do so as well a few steps later
  463. >You looked at her, waiting for the answer and your gaze couldn't help but fall back to the black eye she had
  464. >She put a hoof over it and recoiled slightly
  465. >"Quit it."
  466. >She clearly wasn't proud of last night
  467. >Which is pretty dumb, you reasoned
  468. "Lightning Dust, thanks for saving me last night. I guess I got a little carried away with our conversation and forgot about the spell. I still can't believe you even managed to go that fast while completely fucking hammered."
  469. >She laughed now
  470. >"How do you forget about the only thing keeping you from falling to your death?"
  471. >You had to admit, it was kind of funny
  472.
  473. >But you're not gonna let her get away that easy
  474. "So, what were you gonna say earlier?"
  475. >Silence
  476. "Come on, where's the badass I've heard so much about?"
  477. >"Shut up, Anon! This is just hard for me, okay?"
  478. >You nodded your understanding but showed no sign of changing the subject
  479. >"UGH. I just really liked talking to you last night. And yes, I remember everything. You said some things that hurt to hear, but you're right. I haven't done anything since getting kicked out of the academy. I just kind of... gave up."
  480. >You sensed that there was more she had to say, so you remained quiet
  481. >"I've been short supply on hope lately, it was really nice to hear some words of encouragement. I'm not sure how long I would have stayed in that bar night after night, but it definitely wasn't getting any better."
  482. >She seemed to drop her guard some
  483. >"Also, I don't really cry a whole lot. The whole thing still kinda makes me feel weird, considering I barely know you and all."
  484. >She wasn't rambling was she?
  485. >"And I totally remember calling you a bellboy and some other things I said about you and I really-"
  486. >You hugged her
  487. >Lightning Dust had been spouting insecurities since you met her, it was getting hard to watch
  488. >To your surprise, she almost immediately reciprocated
  489. >She nuzzled her head into your chest
  490. "It's fine, Dust. I'm glad you're doing better."
  491. >A little while had passed
  492. >She had said nothing
  493. "Dust?"
  494. >She backed away quickly, her eyes going wide briefly
  495. >Her face was flushed
  496. >"Sorry!"
  497. >You couldn't stifle a laugh
  498.
  499. >The two of you shared a companionable silence before she broke it
  500. >"Hey, you still need someone to guide you to Ponyville, right?"
  501. >You looked around at the trees
  502. >She had pointed you in the right direction but that was hardly useful information
  503. >It would be easy to get turned around
  504. "Yeah, that'd be nice. I have a place in Ponyville, so I guess I'll wait there until Rainbow Dash comes to tell me how much of a fuck up I am for vanishing last night."
  505. >You began walking again and she flew to your side, landing next to you
  506. >"You uh, you have a place?"
  507. >You now remembered the first words she ever spoke to you
  508. >Something about her not being able to make rent, right?
  509. >Play it cool
  510. >The hot pegasus you founder yourself in the company of just may have asked to stay a night with you
  511. >And no alcohol was required to do so!
  512. >...Sort of!
  513. >Images of your home came at you in a barrage
  514. >A bedroom
  515. >A bathroom
  516. >A couch, sort of
  517. >It was pretty terrible
  518. >Lightning Dust was a world-class flier
  519. >It's a bit embarrassing taking a mare like her to your dumpster fire of a house
  520. >"Anonymous?"
  521. >Shit, you had been quiet
  522. >What if she thinks you don't like her?
  523. >"Are you okay?"
  524. "Yeah! Yeah I'm fine!"
  525. >You should just be honest
  526. >Leave out details though
  527. "I do have a house. But I'm a security guard, and the paycheck to match. It's nothing impressive."
  528. >If it bothered her, you couldn't tell
  529. >She giggled
  530. >"Well, my place isn't very impressive either. Ever since I got kicked out of the academy, things have been pretty hard."
  531. >Lightning Dust's famed bravado helped her out here
  532. >What she was telling you bothered her, but the only reason you knew is because you were looking for it
  533. >Who knows how long she had been putting up the act
  534.
  535. >Some time and small talk had passed
  536. >The trees had begun to thin and both of you welcomed the open air
  537. >Lightning Dust couldn't contain herself
  538. >As you passed the treeline she took to the air, executing a few flips and stunts you knew only a master flier could reproduce
  539. >"Woohoo! We made it!"
  540. >She landed in front of you
  541. >"Look at us, braving uh..."
  542. >She looked passed you to the trees behind
  543. >"...some forest! I guess!"
  544. >You laughed
  545. "Yeah, but you could have left whenever you felt like it. The only reason we're still here is because I can't fly."
  546. >She flew closer
  547. >"I know, I know, but you gotta savor the victories when you can get them!"
  548. >She smiled
  549. >Every time she does, it makes you feel incredible
  550. >You felt proud of it, as if it wouldn't be here without you
  551. >Which is probably the case
  552. >"So where's this luxurious suite we're gonna be staying in?
  553. >Oh yeah, you were going to your house
  554. >Well, this was fun while it lasted
  555. "It's a little ways across town, it's gonna be pretty hard to miss, Dust."
  556. >She laughed, and you could only hope that she could keep her good humor
  557. >You weren't sure why but Lightning Dust seemed to lose the pep in her step as you entered the town of Ponyville
  558. >She stuck to the ground, and generally stayed behind you
  559. >Risking her embarrassment, you had to ask
  560. "Is something wrong?"
  561. >She looked up at you
  562. >"Hey, I don't know how much Rainbow Dash blabbed about me! I'm sure the whole town thinks I'm a villain."
  563. >You assured her that it wasn't that bad
  564. >Rainbow Dash was very focused on her training as a Wonderbolt at the time, she wasn't a monster out to ruin Dust's reputation or anything
  565. >"Also I got... you know."
  566. >She pointed a hoof to her bruised eye
  567. >Poor thing
  568. "When we get to my place, I'll get you some ice for that. Promise."
  569.
  570. >You looked at her a bit longer
  571. >"And your welcome to a shower as well."
  572. >She shoved you
  573. >She was laughing so you assumed that you got her mind off everything for a moment
  574. >"What's that supposed to mean?"
  575. "It means you spent the night in the forest while drunk, Dust."
  576. >She was amused, but rebuttled
  577. >"You don't smell great either, hotshot."
  578. >You took a moment to confirm what she was saying
  579. >It certainly wasn't great
  580. >The two of you talked more before finally reaching your humble abode
  581. >Your very humble abode
  582. >It was one flat color; single story
  583. >While it wasn't much at all, you did keep it in good shape
  584. >You never were a very messy person
  585. >"Well? Aren't you gonna show me inside?"
  586. >What was that look on her face?
  587. >That smile, you felt like there was more to it
  588. >You really hoped you weren't reading too much into it
  589. >Quit being a bitch, Anon
  590. >You walked forward, opening the door and ushering her inside
  591. "After you madam!"
  592. >She looked over to you as she entered
  593. >Her eyes were half-lidded and her smile widened
  594. >You felt your face go hot
  595. >She giggled and you felt yourself die inside
  596. >Keep it together, Anon
  597. >You followed her inside and began ruminating on the events of the last day
  598. >Despite everything you were told, Lightning Dust had been incredible fun to be around
  599. >And despite how useless you were in any given scenario, you felt like you were helping her
  600. >It was nice to be needed
  601. >Man, you had completely fallen for her hadn't you?
  602. >"This isn't so bad."
  603. >Lightning Dust flew up and let herself drop onto your couch
  604. >You heard something break and winced
  605. >Your faithful couch had served you well
  606. >She didn't seem to notice
  607.
  608. >"It's a bit barren in here, but it's not dirty!"
  609. >She was right, the couch, amongst a couple of other items was the only thing in this entire room
  610. >You didn't really take the comment about how clean the place was as a compliment
  611. >After all, it's easy to keep the place clean when there's nothing to clean
  612. >She sat up
  613. >"Hey Anonymous... can I tell you something?"
  614. >Your heart began to race
  615. >She moved, giving you ample space to sit down next to her
  616. >You did so
  617. >"I've been thinking a lot about what you said, and I have an idea."
  618. >You believed that you looked relatively smooth, but you'd wager that your imagination didn't match up with reality
  619. >Her eyes lit up
  620. >"I'm gonna start training again! What happened to me at the academy really sucks, but you're right. What if I can get back in? What if there's another chance for me?"
  621. >That's great news!
  622. >There's no way they wouldn't let her back in if she really-
  623. >"And, I have another idea!"
  624. >Hm?
  625. >"You said you wanted to be a royal guard right? We could train together! We could give each other updates on our progress and bring each other up when we feel down. Just like you helped me out last night."
  626. >That's a great idea!
  627. >If you thought you were determined before, there's nothing that could stop you now!
  628. >"And..."
  629. >Lightning Dust looked over to you, a bit of mischief in her eyes
  630. >Oh fuck
  631. >"In case you were thinking of not going through with this, here's some extra motivation for you."
  632. >She pushed you down with one hoof on your chest
  633. >Right, she was a world-class athlete
  634. >She was pretty strong
  635. >For a little bit, it seemed she was just as nervous as you were
  636. >But, she had always been about pushing her limits
  637. >Closing her eyes she planted her lips against yours
  638. >You thought your blood might ignite, but instinct took over
  639. >You hadn't known her for very long but for the first time in a long time, something felt right
  640. >You sat up and pulled her in close, eliciting a small yelp from her before continuing the kiss
  641.
  642. >Your hands traced the curves of her body
  643. >This was amazing
  644. >You had kissed mares, sure
  645. >You had had one night stands, sure
  646. >Hell, you even had a relationship once or twice!
  647. >None of it lasted, though
  648. >And even as you were in the moment, you knew it didn't mean much
  649. >Even if you wanted it to
  650. >But this?
  651. >Something was different
  652. >And for better or for worse, you weren't sure what yet
  653. >Lightning Dust pulled away from the kiss
  654. >Her forelegs were still wrapped around your neck when she opened her eyes
  655. >A gentle smile was across her face
  656. >The two of you stared into each other's eyes briefly before she flinched slightly, remembering something
  657. >Her face obtained a hue of red as she placed a hoof over her blackened eye and turned away slightly
  658. >Her other eye was looking at the floor
  659. >You imagined the bruise definitely made her feel less pretty
  660. >You would have guessed she would have thought the injuries made her look cool, but then again, there wasn't really anything cool about a black eye
  661. >With one hand you removed the hoof covering her face and with the other, you turned her to look at you
  662. >The red in her face became more prominent through her blue-green fur
  663. >You had to admit to yourself, it was kind of funny to see someone with her reputation so nervous
  664. "Dust, it's okay."
  665. >Running your fingers through her mane, you pulled her back in
  666. >With renewed confidence, Lightning Dust met your lips once more
  667. >Almost aggressively
  668. >After a few more moments, you pushed her away softly
  669. >Her eyes opened
  670. >"Huh?"
  671. >You laughed
  672. >I should go get something for your eye, I'll be right back."
  673. >It's almost like she snapped back to reality
  674. >"R-right! You should do that."
  675. >You stood up and Lightning Dust moved back to the other side of the couch with a flap of her wings
  676. >You found a simple wash cloth, wet it, and placed a few cubes of ice in it before making your way back to your new-found companion
  677.
  678. >The pegasus smiled brightly as you returned
  679. >You handed your make-shift ice pack to her and sat down once again
  680. >She placed it on her damaged eye and sighed
  681. >"Thanks Anon, that feels a lot better. I don't remember getting hit in the face, but it sure fucking hurts."
  682. >After a few seconds she took to the air one more time and landed gently in your lap
  683. "Do you walk anywhere?"
  684. >The one eye you could see rolled
  685. >"Fuck off."
  686. >The two of you laughed
  687. >You gently stroked her as she rested against you
  688. >You really, really didn't want to give this up
  689. >You braced yourself for any response other than the one you wanted
  690. "So..."
  691. >She looked up at you
  692. >God damn those golden eyes were your weakness
  693. >You did your best to rally
  694. "So are we like... a thing now?"
  695. >Lightning dust swiveled around so that she was facing you and smiled
  696. >"Well, do you want to be a thing? I got a feeling I know the answer, but I just want to hear you say it."
  697. >You really needed to stop hanging out with the Wonderbolts crowd
  698. >That damned ego
  699. >Might as well give her the satisfaction
  700. >You sighed
  701. "Yes Lightning Dust, I really want us to be a thing. The makeout session was doing it for me, not gonna lie. I could use that on a regular basis."
  702. >Her eyes adopted a more sultry look
  703. >"I wouldn't mind that either. But not so fast, there's a deal we made, remember? You gotta train with me!"
  704. >Improve your quality of life so that you have a better chance of getting laid?
  705. >What's not to like about this plan?
  706. "Deal"
  707. >You gave her a quick kiss
  708. "So, I have an idea too."
  709. >She seemed amused
  710. >"Is that right?"
  711. >You nodded
  712. "When I first came up to you, you snapped at me because you thought I had been sent after you for whatever reason."
  713. >She was listening
  714. "And you mentioned something about your landlord kicking you out, I think?"
  715. >Her ears fell
  716. >"Yeah. Like I said, I've had a lot of trouble getting back up on my hooves since the academy. I just kinda crash from place to place until they kick me out."
  717.
  718. >You really hoped you weren't about to mess this one up
  719. "I know it isn't the greatest place in the world, but..."
  720. >She raised an eyebrow
  721. "I mean, if you want. I don't mind if you'd, ya know... stay here."
  722. >Her eyes went a little wide
  723. >Hurry, Anon
  724. "I wouldn't make you pay rent or anything. In fact, I normally have some cash to spare even as a freelance guard. The idea of you just going from place to place makes me sick. And I don't know what image is worse, that or you spending what bits you have left on drinks on a night when you're alone. Look, I... I just want to see you happy."
  725. >What the fuck are you thinking?
  726. >How long had you known Lightning Dust?
  727. >A little over a day? If that?
  728. >And before you met her, everything you had heard about her made her sound menacing
  729. >What if she was playing you?
  730. >What if this is some stupidly elaborate scheme to somehow get back at the Wonderbolts and she's using you to get close to them?
  731. >Okay, maybe not that one
  732. >Regardless, here you are, kissing a mare you barely know and allowing her to move in with you
  733. >On top of that, Lightning Dust is woefully out of your league
  734. >There's no way she would stick around once she got her head screwed on straight
  735. >This whole thing was-
  736. >Lightning Dust dropped the ice pack you had made for her in favor of bringing you into a hug that threatened the integrity of your spine
  737. >"Do you mean it, Anon? I swear, if you're messing with me-"
  738. >Her voice began to break
  739. >Tears hadn't fallen yet
  740. >She was clearly doing her best to act tough
  741. "No joke! I promise!"
  742. >You were ecstatic
  743. "You said you had to be out of there soon right? Would you be comfortable flying over to Cloudsdale and getting your things?"
  744. >She removed herself from your lap, flying well above you now
  745. >"Yes! I don't have a lot, I promise! I'll go get my stuff and I'll be back before you know it!"
  746. >She flew in and hugged you one more time
  747. >"Thank you so much, Anonymous!"
  748.
  749. "Well, go on! Don't want them throwing your stuff out, do you?"
  750. >She laughed and zoomed out the door
  751. >Damn, she was fast
  752. >Hopefully this was the beginning of one of the greatest comeback stories Equestria's ever seen
  753. >You chuckled
  754. >Maybe you'd be an honorable mention in her autobiography when she became captain of the Wonderbolts
  755. >You made your way to your room as you continued your fantasy about Lightning Dust
  756. >Your ever-present sword buckled to your side reminded you of the other end of the deal
  757. >What if you really did become a royal guard?
  758. >Sir Anonymous, Commander of the Something'th Legion!
  759. >There were steps to be taken, though
  760. >You were fit, and your swordsmanship was okay, but neither were great enough to consider yourself a protector of the Two Sisters.
  761. >Not to mention you lacked the general tact and charisma you imagined someone of such a position possessed
  762. >But enough about those thoughts!
  763. >You removed the pieces of armor that had been adorning you for the duration of this mini-adventure and placed them in a neat pile along with your sword
  764. >Your eyes glanced to a series of photos pinned along your wall
  765. >The friends you had made in the academy graduating along with you
  766. >You smiled
  767. >Of course, you were the only human
  768. "I'll make you guys proud."
  769. >You walked over to your closet, rummaging for anything that Lightning Dust could use during her stay
  770. >You didn't have another bed, so that left the couch
  771. >You weren't about to invite her to your own bed
  772. >Just in case she might find it clingy and creepy
  773. >Keep her options open, Anon!
  774. >Eventually, you found a pillow that looked eerily similar to her coat color
  775. >Maybe she'll find that amusing
  776. >Shortly thereafter, you found one of your only spare blankets
  777. >A bright pink one left by an ex-girlfriend
  778. >You paused to remember the events of your break-up
  779. >Daisy was a bitch, anyway
  780. >She was just piggy-backing off of the success of Roseluck and everyone knew it
  781.
  782. >Now was not the time to get bitter
  783. >You placed the items you had salvaged onto the couch and frowned
  784. >There really wasn't a whole lot you could do, huh?
  785. >There was an empty room across from yours but it lacked furnishing in every sense of the word
  786. >No bed or anything
  787. >You placed one of your boots on the couch and pressed down
  788. >It had more give than usual
  789. >You knew you had heard something snap earlier
  790. >You sighed
  791. >She was worth it
  792. >Having done all you could, you resigned to a shower and a meal
  793. >You felt instantly rejuvenated after bathing
  794. >Sleeping in the forest sucked
  795. >That being said, you remembered how it felt to hold Lightning Dust as she slept
  796. >If you were lucky, there were more of those nights to come
  797. >The excitement of the last 24 hours had also made you neglect how hungry you were
  798. >You opted for something a bit healthier this time around
  799. >You were training for a pretty big position now, might as well start to act like it
  800. >In the midst of your meal, you heard a loud banging at your door
  801. >You made your way over at a brisk pace
  802. >Dust was back already?
  803. >She really was the fastest flier in all of Equestria!
  804. >Even though it couldn't have been more than an hour, you were already excited to see her again
  805. >You opened the door, smiling as wide as you could before it crumbled in an instant
  806. >Rainbow Dash stood in your doorway, the mask of her Wonderbolt garb brought down
  807. >Unfortunately, she looked very, very upset with you
  808. >You supposed this had to come around at some point
  809. >And there's no way this will get better once she figured out why you were gone
  810. >She was yelling
  811. >"Anonymous?! Where the fuck have you been?!"
  812. >This is not good
  813.
  814. >Maybe Lightning Dust's bravado was rubbing off on you, but you couldn't find it within you to care
  815. "Why does it matter? Were you worried you'd have to actually count the tickets yourself without your bellboy?"
  816. >Using the insult Lightning Dust used on you last night felt weird, but drove your point home nonetheless
  817. >Rainbow Dash was not amused
  818. >She brought herself inside your home, slamming the door behind her with her back leg
  819. >"Are you seriously getting an attitude with me? You walked out on a job! A job that I got for you, you bastard! Do you know how that makes me look?"
  820. >Oh yes, Dash
  821. >Your life must be so difficult
  822. "Your worried about how you look? Your a fucking Wonderbolt, Dash. There's only a handful of ponies in the world that can claim a status similar to yours. Forgive me for feeling like an absolute fucking idiot being your chaperone."
  823. >Rainbow Dash flew up to you and pressed her face into yours, forcing you to take a few steps back
  824. >"It took blood, sweat, and tears for me to get to where I am! If you can't be bothered with the little stuff, what makes you think you deserve a better position, you entitled prick?!"
  825. >She brought herself closer to you
  826. >You were starting to get angry
  827. >You shoved her away
  828. "I didn't want to walk out, okay?! I just left to get a drink while you and the rest of the Wonderbolts were flexing your extended routine for Cloudsdale. And... some unexpected things came up."
  829. >Rainbow was not convinced
  830. >"Like what? Did you find some other friend to exploit?"
  831. >God damn it
  832. >You anger began to match hers
  833. >"No! Like I was saying, I left to get a drink and while I was there, I met a pony. We sort of hit it off. And I just lost track of time! I'm sorry I bailed on you, but I wouldn't have done it if I felt like it would have mattered if I stayed."
  834.
  835. >Dash seemed to ease up a little bit, but her fury was still clearly visible
  836. >It was always kind of hard for her to grasp why you didn't think of yourself like the way she thought of herself
  837. >Your self-esteem hadn't been great for a while
  838. >"You met someone? This better be the greatest pony I've ever met or so help me-"
  839. >You heard a voice from behind Rainbow Dash
  840. >"Anonymous? Why are you yelling?"
  841. >It was Lightning Dust
  842. >You were more sure of your death now than when you were falling from Cloudsdale
  843. >This is about to get way worse before it gets better
  844. >If it gets better
  845. >Celestia, give you strength
  846. >Lightning Dust walked into the door way, saddle-bags on either side of her
  847. >Wonderbolts symbols were embroidered on satchels
  848. >You took a moment to admire that even though she had been kicked out of the academy, she held onto them
  849. >Deep down, she wanted to try again
  850. >No time for that now
  851. >Rainbow Dash's eyes went wide at the sound of her voice before she turned
  852. >She was wrought with disbelief
  853. >"L-Lightning Dust?! WHAT ARE YOU-"
  854. >Dash turned to you, her wings flapping a little more vigorously now
  855. >She looked disgusted
  856. >"Don't tell me that this is the pony you met last night! Lightning Dust?! LIGHTNING DUST, ANON?!"
  857. >You tried to speak
  858. "Rainbow, she's not-"
  859. >She cut you off, shouting
  860. >"Did you forget about how she almost killed my friends? Or what about the time she endangered all of the other cadets? ALL of the times she endangered the other cadets?"
  861. >Lightning Dust spoke up
  862. >"Back off, Rainbow Dash! If you got a problem with me, I'm right here! That is, if you can spit it out without having to take a break to compliment yourself!"
  863. >What did you do to deserve this
  864. >Sick burn, though
  865. >Rainbow Dash zoomed over to her
  866. >Lightning Dust didn't falter
  867. >She even had a slight smile on her face
  868. >You hoped she hadn't been waiting a long time for this moment
  869.
  870. >Rainbow Dash wasted no time
  871. >"Oh nice one, loser! How are you going to insult me? I succeeded where you failed!"
  872. >She gestured at her Wonderbolts uniform with a hoof
  873. >She pushed the assault
  874. >"And I didn't have to kill a bunch of ponies to do it. Imagine that!"
  875. >Your hands were white-knuckled
  876. "Dash, that's enough."
  877. >Lightning Dust nearly flinched at her words but came back
  878. >"And what exactly did you do to earn that uniform, Dash? Did you kiss Spitfire's ass even more than you did in the academy?"
  879. >Rainbow Dash was red in the face
  880. >"Keep talking like that and I'll give you an eye to match the other, you bitch!"
  881. >Lightning Dust bit her bottom lip and covered her face with one wing
  882. >She had forgotten about her black eye
  883. >You thought the air around you might heat to plasma
  884. >Rainbow Dash continued
  885. >"Stay far way from Anonymous! Stop ruining other people's lives and keep ruining your own, you worthless excuse for a pegasus!"
  886. >It would seem that Lightning Dust had not properly imagined a rematch
  887. >It was hard to fight back when Rainbow Dash had the moral high ground
  888. >She laughed at her
  889. >"I'll bet you were drunk when you met Anon at the bar last night! Do the drinks help you justify almost killing people to become a Wonderbolt?
  890. >Dust was silent
  891. >"Have you even made a single friend since getting kicked out?"
  892. >Lightning Dust's angry expression was betrayed by a few stray tears
  893. >You couldn't watch this
  894. "Yes, she has"
  895. >Rainbow Dash collided with the doorway, knocking her out of the air
  896. >Lightning Dust gasped
  897. >You stood there, arm outstretched and your fist clenched
  898. >Rainbow Dash blinked a few times, her vision coming back to her and she touched a hoof to her nose
  899. >Two small streams of blood flowed from her nostrils
  900. >"A-Anon...?"
  901. >Your anger began to subside and the look of betrayal on Dash began the flood of guilt within you
  902. >"D-did you just... hit me?"
  903. >She stood up shakily, tears in her eyes
  904. >She wasn't looking at you
  905.
  906. >You felt beyond awful
  907. >The only reason you hadn't completely turned into an apologetic mess is because you could easily argue that she deserved it
  908. >You watched her wipe her nose, staining a portion of her foreleg red
  909. >Okay, maybe it'd be a bit hard to argue that
  910. >She stared at the blood on her foreleg, her eyes narrowing with rage
  911. >A stream of tears flowed from either eye
  912. >In her flustered state, Rainbow Dash couldn't manage any properly structured insult
  913. >She yelled, her voice cracking customarily
  914. >"F-Fuck you, Anon!"
  915. >You wanted to say something, but found yourself speechless
  916. >Your actions had spoken enough, anyway
  917. >She stood up, her eyes wrenched closed
  918. >"FUCK YOU!"
  919. >She flew out the door
  920. >You could hear the fading hum of her swift departure
  921. >All else was silent
  922. >You were pretty sure that if Rainbow Dash wanted to, she could kick your ass seven different ways
  923. >You were a push over compared to an athlete of her caliber
  924. >The fact that she didn't made you feel that much worse
  925. >As you turned to walk away, Lightning Dust spoke
  926. >"Anonymous? Are you okay?"
  927. >You sat on your couch
  928. >You grimaced as you sank lower than you were used to
  929. >Dust had set her saddle bags to the side, gliding over to the seat next to you and landing gently
  930. >"Hey..."
  931. >You didn't turn to look at her
  932. >"I really appreciate you standing up for me like that. I'm sorry that I caused all of this."
  933. >From the corner of your eye, you could see her head lower
  934. >"I'm sorry you had to meet me."
  935. >Finally, you looked over to her
  936. >A small smile crossed your face
  937. "Oh shut up, Dust. It's not your fault. You didn't know Rainbow Dash was going to show up. Besides, she started it."
  938. >You thought for a second
  939. "Well, I guess I did technically by leaving my job while on duty and all of that."
  940. >Lightning Dust smiled
  941. >She seemed relieved that you weren't mad
  942.
  943. >You flopped down onto your back, your arms spread across the couch
  944. "I feel like a fucking jerk. I hit her, Dust! Like, how uncool is that?"
  945. >Your staring contest with the ceiling was cut short as you felt hooves pawing at you
  946. >You looked down
  947. >Lightning Dust steadily climbed onto your chest, her forelegs outstretched past your head
  948. >She got comfy and thought for a bit
  949. >"Yeah, that's pretty messed up, but hey, what can you do?"
  950. >You scowled
  951. "Not helping, Dust."
  952. >You felt her fidget some
  953. >"Right, right. I'm trying to find some reserve sympathy for the mare who got me kicked out of the Wonderbolts Academy and then called me a complete failure in front of my only friend."
  954. >You raised an eyebrow
  955. "Only friend?"
  956. >She seemed slightly embarrassed
  957. >"Uh... yeah. Dash was sort of right about that whole 'no friends' thing."
  958. >You found yourself building up anger again as your thoughts drifted to the things Rainbow had said to her
  959. >You decided it was best to try and deflect such thoughts
  960. "Wait a minute."
  961. >She looked to you
  962. >You adopted a humorous tone
  963. "You got you kicked out of Wonderbolt Academy, not Rainbow Dash. She was being a total bitch back there, but that doesn't change what happened!"
  964. >She pressed her head into your chest so that only the tops of her eyes were visible from your angle
  965. >She was looking at you, her voice muffled as she spoke
  966. >"Yeah, so?"
  967. >She was adorable
  968. >The two of you laughed
  969. >You sat up quickly, causing a small, playful scream to come from her
  970. >You embraced her in a hug
  971. >She pressed her head against you, her eyes closed and a smile across her face
  972. "Dust?"
  973. >"Yeah?"
  974. "For what it's worth, I'm glad I met you. You don't have to be sorry."
  975. >She strengthened her grip
  976. >"And for what it's worth, I'm actually not sorry at all that you met me!"
  977. >Dork
  978. >She looked up at you, happy to be in the moment
  979. >"You're the best, Anon."
  980.
  981. "Yeah, yeah, I know. I'm pretty great."
  982. >You backed off from her some
  983. "Well, I'm actually a total loser. I'm reasonably sure that nobody else in Equestria likes me, but if you think I'm great then that's fine!"
  984. >She giggled
  985. So what all did you bring with you?"
  986. >"Oh!"
  987. >She flew over and grabbed her bags before returning to the couch where you were waiting
  988. >She sat down and rummaged through the pack
  989. >"I didn't bring a whole lot. Necessities mostly. Along with some Wonderbolt merch I couldn't bear to get rid of, a dress, a couple of pictures of-"
  990. >You had to cut her off
  991. "A dress?"
  992. >She immediately got defensive
  993. >This had clearly been a topic brought forth to her before
  994. >Tough girl/athlete stereotypes, you supposed
  995. >"What, I don't get to look pretty every once in a while?"
  996. >You put up your hands in a defenseless gesture
  997. "I didn't say that. It was just surprising, that's all."
  998. >She continued going through her bags, quiet for a bit
  999. >You couldn't resist
1000. "So, can I see it?"
1001. >She looked up, a faint red across her face
  1002. >"The dress?"
  1003. >You nodded
1004. >"I don't even know if it looks that good. I've never actually uh... worn it."
  1005. "Ever?"
1006. >She flapped her wings once or twice nervously
1007. >"Well, I was always so busy training before hand, I didn't really have time for dating or formal events, not that I really enjoy formal events to begin with."
1008. >She removed the dress from her bags, looking at it
1009. >"And after I got booted from the academy and I stopped training, I thought it might be useful to put myself out there, ya know? Find a nice guy, and dazzle him with this!"
1010. >She held out a portion of it
1011. >Honestly, it looked fairly cheap
1012. >Certainly nothing like Rarity could create for an event as important as the The Grand Galloping Gala
1013. >You'd rather die than tell her that though
1014. >It was various shades of gold, with the end of the dress fading into a white trim
  1015. >She looked up
1016. >"But hey, I got you right? It's fine, really."
1017. >She folded the dress, placing it back into one of her bags
  1018.
  1019. >How could you not?
1020. "Do you want to try it on?"
1021. >Her faced scrunched for a brief moment before she blushed slightly more than before
1022. "Oh come on, you just said you wanted to look pretty every once in a while, and you've never worn it! It's just the two of us. No more ponies are gonna burst through the door and yell at me. At least, I hope so."
1023. >She brought the dress back out of her bag and looked at it longingly
  1024. "Please?"
  1025. >She rolled her eyes
1026. >"Alright, alright, jeez! I'll put it on."
  1027. >She thought for a moment
  1028. >"Hey, I got an idea!"
  1029. >Oh no
1030. >"You should dress up for me as well! There's gotta be something you can do. We can come out of our rooms at the same time and surprise each other!"
  1031. >How cliché
1032. "Lightning Dust, that is so lame."
1033. >It was no use, she was fired up
1034. >She had a big grin on her face, and her wings were flapping excitedly
  1035. >"Too late!"
1036. >Perhaps at a speed that is too much for indoors, she zoomed off to the bathroom in between your room and the empty one
1037. >"The door slammed and clicked
1038. >You could hear her voice from the other side
1039. >"And give me a while, won't you? I wanna do my mane!"
1040. >Where is the Lightning Dust you know, and who is this mare that has replaced her?
1041. >You sighed, letting out an exasperated groan as you reluctantly made your way to your room
1042. >There was no way you had anything that could be considered formal
1043. >Come to think of it, you weren't sure if you had ever dressed up in your time in Equestria
  1044. >Well that's kind of depressing
1045. >An idea popped into your head, causing you to move to your closet and surf through your clothes with rapidity
1046. >You remembered that you still had your dress blues from your graduation at the academy
1047. >And unfortunately, you also remember the hell you went through to get them
1048. >Everything you owned had to be tailor made due to your unique physique, and the officers had a hell of a time deciding on what best matched the pony version of it
  1049.
1050. >You found the outfit, removing it gently from it's hanger before studying it more closely
1051. >You couldn't help but feel a little nostalgic over it
1052. >Even though you have really done nothing impressive with your training
  1053. >Whatever
1054. >Fitting into the outfit took more time than you remember
1055. >This thing was a god damned pain
1056. >You felt like you spent the better part of your life finessing the buttons into place
1057. >It felt tighter than you remember
1058. >You went ahead and wrote that concern off has muscle gain despite great evidence of another explanation
1059. >You took a minute to fix your hair
1060. >You should really get this trimmed
1061. >They made you cut it short while training so that the plate helmets you wore would fit properly
1062. >Maybe you had gotten a little drunk on the freedom of not having to worry about that anymore
1063. >You flattened out the creases on your suit
  1064. >You looked pretty good!
1065. >Taking note of the time, you now realized that it had been about a little over ten minutes
1066. >You poked your head outside your door
1067. >Lightning Dust was nowhere in sight
1068. >Guess that only meant one thing
1069. >You knocked on the bathroom door
  1070. >"Dust? You in there?"
1071. >"I said give me a bit, remember?!"
  1072. "Right, sorry!"
  1073. >You resigned to your ever-present couch
1074. >You really needed to add a little something to the place
1075. >About another twenty minutes passed before you heard her voice once more
  1076. >"Okay, I'm ready!"
1077. >You were suddenly rather nervous
1078. >Sure, the dress was cheap and all, but you would wager that she would be mind-blowing versus your rather sad form
1079. >Your mind drifted to the thought you had earlier
1080. >About Lightning Dust being woefully out of your league
1081. >You really couldn't wait to start this training thing and wrangle some self-esteem
  1082. >"Are you behind a door?"
  1083. >Shit
  1084. "Uh, one second!"
1085. >You placed yourself behind your bedroom door
  1086. >You felt rather ridiculous
1087. >Yet you couldn't wipe this dumb grin off your face
  1088.
  1089. >"Okay, I'm gonna count to three!"
  1090. >"One!"
  1091. >"Two!"
1092. >You really need to work on your anxiety
  1093. >"Three!"
1094. >You slammed open the door to your bedroom
1095. >The bathroom door was still closed
  1096. >You were bitterly confused
1097. >You heard her voice from within
1098. >"Why did you open the door?"
  1099. >What? Why wouldn't you?
1100. "You said you were going to count to three!"
1101. >"Yeah! One, two, three, GO."
1102. >She emphasized the last word
  1103. "You didn't specify that!"
1104. >"Because everyone knows that, idiot!"
1105. >Are you actually shouting to a pony on the other side of a door about this
  1106. "But you're supposed to-!"
1107. >"Just walk back in your room and do it again!"
  1108. "Fine!"
1109. >You walked back into your room, assuming the position you held moments ago
1110. >You maintained that she should have specified, but that was an argument for later
1111. >"Okay, one more time. I'm gonna count to three!"
1112. "You mean you're gonna count to 'go'."
1113. >"Why are you being like this?"
1114. >You couldn't help but laugh at the absurdity of this
1115. "Why are YOU being like this?"
1116. >You could hear her own laughter between the two doors, before she shouted
  1117. >"JUST GO!"
1118. >You both slammed open your doors simultaneously
1119. >Lightning Dust was floating gently in the air, making herself eye level with you
1120. >Despite what you had thought about the dress earlier, she looked stunning
1121. >She did a light twirl in the air before dropping to her hooves on the ground
1122. >The varying layers of gold accented by her mane danced hypnotically with the light before her landing
1123. >It was sleeveless, with a V shape across her chest
1124. >But you supposed that doesn't really matter for ponies other than style, huh?
1125. >Her traditionally swept back mane had a large portion of it pulled forward, with the hair being swept to the side, just a small portion of it covering one of her eyes
1126. >You supposed it wasn't coincidence that it was the black one
  1127.
1128. >Her hair lacked the general spiked-front, with the rest of her going back down her neck
1129. >Her mane gave her a gentler appearance, as opposed to the usual tough look she maintained
1130. >You probably preferred her old mane style, and she clearly hadn't practiced with this one
1131. >Although, it was likely she hadn't practiced doing her mane at all in a very long time
1132. >Perhaps you were over analyzing, but you could have sworn she was wearing the slightest bit of make-up
  1133. >Mascara, maybe?
1134. >An hour ago you would have said that hell would freeze over before Lightning Dust put on the slightest bit of make-up
1135. >Even if it lacked proper execution in reality, you could tell she was incredibly excited with the result
  1136. >And you know what?
  1137. >She was beautiful
1138. >"You um... you look really cute."
1139. >You had completely forgotten that this was not a one-sided thing
1140. >She was looking at you the whole time you were taking her in
1141. >You suddenly became very aware of your posture and overall demeanor
1142. >She giggled as she noticed you readjust
1143. "Dust, you look absolutely amazing."
1144. >She smiled, and her eyes met the floor
  1145. >She spoke surprisingly quiet
  1146. >"Thank you, Anon."
1147. "You've never worn that dress before right? Well, I'm glad! If you had, I probably wouldn't have met you while you were single."
  1148. >She blushed
1149. >You could tell that she was not used to this at all, but that she was definitely having fun
1150. >"No. Come to think of it, I can't remember the last time I really did anything like this."
1151. >She flew in the air, over to you
1152. >"You have no idea how nervous I was in there. Looking in the mirror at this stupid fucking bruise, trying to get the dress on just right, trying to fix my damn mane which I feel like doesn't really look that good..."
  1153. >She continued
1154. >"...And on top of that you look really nice in your uniform, and I feel like-"
1155. >You put your arms around her and pulled her into a kiss
1156. >She flapped her wings in surprise, but shortly thereafter, she used them to pull you two closer in your embrace
  1157.
1158. >She pulled away from you, and you opened your eyes to find her warm smile once again
1159. >You turned and noticed that the sun had finally set to make way for Luna's night
1160. >You realized just how tired you were
1161. >The night before you had slept with your back to a tree
1162. >Not the greatest night of sleep you've ever had
1163. >You looked back to the pegasus
1164. "We should get some sleep, I don't know about you, but I got nothing out of last night. Not to mention I've been sore all day. There's nothing comfy about the forest."
1165. >Lightning Dust shook her head, roughing up her mane so that it began to resemble it's natural style
1166. >"Good, I was getting sick of this look anyway."
1167. >She looked down at the dress
1168. >"I feel pretty and all, but it's just not really my thing."
1169. >The two of you shared a laugh and agreed to part ways for a moment to change into something more comfortable
1170. >you threw off your regal clothing, piling it in the corner of your room to be hung up at a later date
1171. >You thought a second about how the suit would look horrific after not being hung up properly
  1172. >You shrugged
1173. >You were too tired to care
1174. >You threw on a shirt and some sweat pants before exiting back into the hallway to meet Lightning Dust
1175. >You looked over to her and couldn't help but be a little embarrassed
1176. >Lightning Dust saw your expression and raised an eyebrow
  1177. >"Is something wrong?"
1178. "It's just, I saw you in a dress a moment ago and now you're not wearing anything. I know that's standard fare for ponies but humans wear clothes all the time. It's still hard to get used to, that's all. Well, when they're hot anyway."
  1179. >She giggled
1180. "This sounds like only an advantage for me. That being said, I'll be right back!"
1181. >She zoomed into your room and closed the door behind her
1182. "Hey! What are you doing?"
1183. >Before you had time to manage to say anything else, Lightning Dust came back out, with one of your shirts draped over her
  1184.
1185. >It didn't fit her at all, draping well past her hips
1186. >She looked down at it, straightening herself in the air to get a good look at the full length
1187. >"Ha! Look at me, I'm wearing my coltfriend's shirt! Can't say I've ever done this."
1188. >She attempted to fix one of the sleeves that kept falling past her shoulder before giving up
  1189. >"This is pretty comfy. I get why it's a thing. And it's a little sexy, don't ya think?"
1190. >She twisted to the side and pulled up part of the shirt, revealing her cutie mark
1191. >She gazed from her cutie mark to you, her half-lidded eyes taunting you
1192. >Somehow, this was far more lewd than her just being naked all of the time
  1193. >She giggled
1194. >"Don't faint on me now! So where am I sleeping?"
1195. >Perhaps now more than ever, you wanted to invite her to your own bed
1196. >You did your best to compose yourself
1197. >Don't creep her out, Anon
1198. >Or are you making yourself look horrifically oblivious, by not inviting her?
1199. >Why must you be so lame?
  1200. "I uh..."
1201. >"Oh! These must be for me! I didn't even notice."
1202. >She zoomed over to the couch, where you had placed the pillow and blanket you found earlier
1203. >"Aw, it's even the color of my coat!"
1204. >It sounded almost mocking as she grabbed the pillow with both forelegs and hugged it tight
1205. "I just thought you might like it or something."
  1206. >Smooth
1207. >She flew up to your face and kissed you quickly on the cheek
  1208. >"It's cute. Thank you."
1209. >She laid down on the couch and slipped under the pink blanket
  1210. >She sighed
1211. >"This thing is super comfy. Definitely beats the forest!"
1212. >It's true, your couch was awesome
1213. >Which is largely why you were upset she broke it earlier
1214. >"So why do you have a pink blanket anyway?"
1215. >You rolled your eyes as you remembered
1216. "It's left over from an ex."
1217. >Lightning Dust threw one hoof in the air triumphantly
  1218. >"I win! I'd bet I'm hotter too!"
  1219. >You chuckled
1220. >You enjoyed her company so much
  1221.
1222. "Yes, Dust. Yes, you are. Do you need anything before I go pass out?"
  1223. >Lightning Dust yawned
1224. >"Nah, I'm good! I'll see you in the morning, Anon. Good night!"
1225. >You bid her good night and made your way to your room
1226. >She called out to you
1227. >"Sleep well okay? We got a big day ahead of us tomorrow!"
1228. >You closed the door before flopping onto your bed, swiveling your head to one side as to not suffocate yourself
1229. >You spent the better part of the next hour with your mind wandering
1230. >What an insanely wild two days
1231. >Your thoughts drifted to Rainbow Dash
1232. >And how you hit her
1233. >You were so disappointed in yourself
1234. >But at the same time, you couldn't help but be a little proud
1235. >Dust looked fairly helpless before you decked her
1236. >As if she really needed your help though
1237. >You'd bet that as soon as Dust got her act together again, she'd realize how much better she could do than you and leave
  1238. >...
1239. >Then what would you do?
1240. >It's been 48 hours and you already can't imagine living without her
  1241. >Oh no, you're in love aren't you?
  1242. >"Anon? Are you awake?"
  1243. >You hadn't even noticed her enter
  1244. "Yeah. Yeah I'm awake."
1245. >She crept in, one hoof gripping the blue-green pillow
1246. >"I... I was thinking about last night. When we were in the woods."
  1247. >She had your attention
1248. >"When I woke up, I was in your lap. You had held me all night. You made sure I was alright."
  1249. >You remembered this well
  1250. >She laughed nervously
1251. >"I guess the couch doesn't beat the forest in every way."
  1252. >You smiled
1253. "You want to sleep in here?"
  1254. >She nodded
  1255. >"I-If that's alright with you."
  1256. >Abso-fucking-lutely
1257. >She set down the pillow, crawling into the bed and sighing as your arm draped around her
1258. >She scooted even closer, nuzzling her head into your chest
1259. >Her eyes fell closed as you stroked her gold mane gently
1260. >Her warmth against yours gave you a feeling of safety and comfort you hadn't known before
1261. >You kissed her gently on the forehead
  1262. "Good night, Dust."
  1263. >"Good night, Anon"
  1264. >She smiled
  1265. >Maybe she wouldn't leave you
  1266.
1267. >Your eyes shot open as you heard Lightning Dust's voice shout to you
  1268. >"ANONYMOUS!"
  1269. >Jesusfuckwhat
1270. >The sun was shining through your window, signifying a brand new day
1271. >You swiveled around so that you were laying on your back
1272. >You realized that Lightning Dust was no longer in the bed with you
1273. >She flew up slightly and dropped on you
1274. >It was rough, but you couldn't help but laugh playfully
1275. >"We got a long day today! Today we begin our training!"
  1276. >Her wings flapped excitedly
1277. >With each word she spoke, her face got closer to yours until her snout was pressed against your own nose
  1278. >"Aren't you excited?"
1279. >About being worked to death?
  1280. >Not necessarily
1281. >But seeing Lightning Dust so excited was more than worth it
1282. "Sure, let's go with that."
  1283. >She beamed with happiness
1284. "How long have you been up anyway?"
1285. >She pushed herself off of you with her forelegs, her hind legs straddling you
1286. >You willed yourself not to blush
1287. >"I've been awake for a little while. I got up before you yesterday too, remember? I kinda just have that internal clock. I'm always up at 6:00am or so because of getting up early to train my whole life."
1288. >Your mind drifted to your days off
1289. >If you were up before noon, something was definitely wrong
1290. >That being said, you realized you felt like somebody had just ripped you out of your grave
  1291. >You were very tired
1292. "Dust, what time is it?"
  1293. >"7:30, why?"
1294. >Maybe Lightning Dust couldn't live with you after all
1295. >No no, this is good for you
  1296. >You sat up groggily
1297. >Lightning Dust moved as you did so
  1298. "Alright, I'm up. I'm up."
1299. >"Awesome! Now, I haven't forgotten my routine from when I was gunning for the Wonderbolts. Are you going to be alright without me for a while?"
1300. >You had your own routine as well
1301. >You may not have touched it in ages, or have used it that much to begin with, but you had an idea of how to handle yourself
1302. "Yeah, Dust. I got it covered."
  1303.
1304. >She gripped you in a hug before releasing you
1305. >"This is going to be so great, Anon! We're gonna crush the competition, I can feel it!"
1306. >Was being a royal guard even a competitive position?
  1307. >Probably
1308. >Maybe you should actually look into that
1309. >"I'm a little rusty, but with you around Anon, I feel faster than I ever was!"
1310. >The words she spoke rung through you for a second
1311. >You just now remembered something
  1312. "Hey, Lightning Dust..."
  1313. >"Yeah?"
1314. >You stood up now, getting dressed into the light armor you wore while on duty
1315. >It seemed sensible enough to train in it
1316. "Do you remember when you saved me from falling off of Cloudsdale?"
1317. >She smiled and seemed to take on an air of pride
1318. >"Heh, it was pretty cool wasn't it?"
  1319. >You laughed
1320. >"Yes, it was really cool, but how much of it do you remember?"
1321. >She looked up to the ceiling as she thought for a moment
1322. >"Not a lot, I was pretty blitzed when I did that. You should try going that fast when you're drunk. It's pretty dizzying."
1323. "When you raced after me, there was this insanely loud noise right after a bright flash of what looked like lightning. It all happened right where you flew from. What was that?"
  1324. >She thought deeply for a moment
1325. >"Are you sure that happened?"
1326. "Oh, I'm sure. It was pretty insane to see you catch up to me."
  1327. >She seemed very confused
1328. "What you're describing sounds similar to a Sonic Rainboom, or at least whatever a Sonic Rainboom would be with a little Lightning Dust flare added to it! But I don't think that's possible."
  1329. "Well, why not?"
1330. >"I- I guess it isn't necessarily impossible, but I've never done anything like that."
1331. >You walked over to her and smiled
1332. >Your turn to be cocky
1333. "Maybe you just needed the proper motivation."
1334. >You leaned down and kissed her
1335. "I'll see you later today, good luck with everything!"
  1336. >She seemed flustered
  1337.
1338. >A moment later Lightning Dust flew past you, beating you out the door
1339. >In the distance you could hear her call to you
  1340. >"Good luck, Anon!"
  1341. >And she was gone
1342. >Leaving you to begin your hard day's work alone
  1343. >And a hard day's work it was
1344. >You had all but forsaken your workout routine as you slowly began to resign to your fate as a security guard
1345. >You found yourself practically dying half way through the exercises
1346. >Sore and winded, you felt defeated in almost every way
1347. >You vommitted what little you had to eat today and yesterday after running two miles
1348. >You could have sworn that you could run at least three at some point
1349. >The workout equipment you had acquired over time, while dusty, proved useful as well
  1350. >And painful
1351. >You marveled at how much your strength had decreased since graduation at the academy
1352. >As the hours went by, you felt as if red-hot railroad spikes were being driven through each and every muscle you worked out
1353. >It would be a while before you reacclimated to this sort of lifestyle
1354. >If you were ever acclimated to it in the first place that is
1355. >You crashed to the ground at one point, completely exhausted
1356. >You couldn't help but kick your self
1357. >No matter what you were doing, you felt like it wasn't nearly as impressive as what Lightning Dust was doing
1358. >She was an unbelievable flier, what exactly does an athlete of her level do to push herself?
1359. >You had scanned the sky throughout the day to look for her
1360. >You didn't see anything, but occasionally you could hear the distant noise of a pegasus at mach speed
1361. >Here's hoping it wasn't Spitfire and the Wonderbolts on their way for some redemption of Rainbow Dash
1362. >You moved to refill your water, imagining how poor you'd do against the whole of the Wonderbolts teaming up on you
1363. >You'd bet you could at least punch Fleetfoot once or twice
  1364. >Yeah, that'd be a victory in your book
  1365.
1366. >You started to conjure up ways for you to push yourself even harder
1367. >Various terrible workouts bounced in and out of your mind before a thought struck you
1368. >Rainbow Dash, the ever-faithful companion of yours that you horrifically betrayed, used to set something up with you and Twilight Sparkle for training
1369. >Twilight boasted of a spell she used to use to help train her brother, Shining Armor, for the same position you're currently gunning for
1370. >She would summon an amalgamation of magical constructs that would assault the trainee, forcing him to defend himself without worry of death
1371. >Rainbow Dash had coaxed her into doing the same for you twice, but you quickly opted out
1372. >It was one of the most stressful things you had ever done
1373. >However, with your new found motivation in the form of a sexy pegasus, you just might try it again!
1374. >There was just one problem
1375. >Twilight, didn't hate you, but she sure didn't love you either
1376. >Not like Rainbow Dash did
1377. >You were sure Rainbow Dash had condemned you to anyone who would listen
1378. >There was no way Twilight would offer you the same kindness now, not without Dash's say so
1379. >You stopped, realizing what you had just thought
  1380. >...
1381. >Did Rainbow Dash really love you?
1382. >Like, in that kind of way?
1383. >Were you so caught up in the struggles of your career and being the only human in Equestria that you didn't notice?
1384. >She had always gone out of her way to help you ever since you showed up
1385. >Come to think of it, before Lightning Dust and after the academy, Dash was probably your only friend
1386. >Your heart felt heavy as you imagined what she could possibly be going through right now
1387. >How ungrateful she must think you are
  1388. >It didn't make any sense
1389. >As far as people go, you were pretty much garbage
1390. >You were fairly nice, but other than that, your career was DoA, and your charisma was woefully lacking
1391. >But, then again, Dust didn't seem to feel that way
1392. >Maybe Dash didn't see it that way either
  1393.
1394. >You did your best to banish these thoughts
  1395. >They wouldn't help you now
1396. >You decided that the only goal that needed to be in your mind was finishing this damned workout
1397. >Against your better judgement, you decided to make your way to Twilight's castle
1398. >You couldn't hide away about this Rainbow Dash thing forever
1399. >In your eyes, it was probably best just to get this over with
1400. >Or maybe you just didn't want to look like a coward
1401. >With any luck, word about this will have not reached Twilight, and she'll just assume that Rainbow sent you to her
  1402. >With any luck
1403. >When have you ever had strong luck?
1404. >Still clad in your gear, you made your way across Ponyville towards the towering crystalline structure
1405. >Kind of hard to miss
1406. >While the journey wasn't very long in all reality, the trek felt like it took ages
1407. >Anxiety about what Twilight may say to you was slightly overwhelming
1408. >On top of this, having Lightning Dust with you for every moment these last couple of days has made you realize just how lonely things were for you on average
1409. >Nobody greeted you with a smile like she did
  1410. >Nobody said hello
1411. >But plenty of people stared
1412. >Being the only human wasn't all it was cracked up to be
1413. >Interesting and novel at times
1414. >lonely and heartbreaking at others
1415. >At one point you looked off into the distant sky and saw Lightning Dust
1416. >She was rocketing through the air, performing various stunts you thought might make Spitfire's knees weak
1417. >At one point she flew as high as she could before stopping all motion in her wings so that she began to fall
1418. >She quickly oriented around and worked with gravity to move as fast as she possibly could towards the ground
1419. >Faster and faster, she plummeted through the air
1420. >If you had to guess, she was attempting to recreate what the two of you were talking about earlier
1421. >Despite the distance she had from you, you could ear the faint growing roar of Lightning Dust's descent towards the ground
1422. >It was incredible to watch
  1423.
1424. >You couldn't help but tense up watching
1425. >Any loss of control could easily kill her in this situation
1426. >Eventually, Lightning Dust was fractions of a second from landing
1427. >At the last possible moment for someone as capable as her, she turned away
1428. >Her trademark lightning trail followed her until she was well above ground
1429. >She stopped, looking back to the spot that she almost impacted
1430. >It was hard to tell at this distance, but she seemed frustrated
1431. >You wished that you could give her words of encouragement
1432. >You realized that you had been standing here a while, marveling at your girlfriend
1433. >This probably seemed a little weird to some ponies in Ponyville
1434. >It'd be best to get moving
1435. >Eventually, for better or for worse, you arrived on Twilight Sparkle's doorstep
1436. >What exactly did you expect to come of this?
1437. >There's almost no way this could end well
1438. >How are you going to explain this nonsense to Dust?
  1439. >You knocked
  1440. >Well, too late now
  1441. >You held your breath
1442. >You heard trotting and a mare's voice call out
  1443. >"Coming!"
1444. >You couldn't tell if it was Twilight or Starlight
1445. >You had seen Twilight's apprentice before, but you never really interacted with her
1446. >The door opened, and a smiling purple face greeted you before it distorted into an expression of pure anger
1447. >Aw man, she totally knew about yesterday
1448. >Twilight opened the door fully, her eyes narrowing as she shouted at you
1449. >"Anonymous?! You've got some nerve showing up here! Rainbow Dash told me all about what you did yesterday! How could you hit her? After all she's done for you!"
  1450. >Incoming friendship rant
  1451. >Or alicorn vaporization
1452. >You weren't sure which one was worse, to be quite honest
1453. >This was a very stupid idea, in hindsight
  1454.
  1455. >You are Lightning Dust
1456. >And you cannot land this trick to save your fucking life
1457. >Time and time again, you failed it
1458. >This had to have been your eleventh attempt
  1459. >Or something like that
1460. >Each and every time, the third loop felt too small
1461. >The Wonderbolts are all about symmetry, like, come on!
1462. >You couldn't get your mind off of what Anon had said
1463. >About that flash of lightning and then the noise afterwards when you flew down to save him a couple of nights ago
1464. >Was that really something like a the Sonic Rainboom?
1465. >Is that even something only Rainbow Dash could do?
1466. >You rolled your eyes at the idea of a trick of that caliber being impossible for all ponies except for one
  1467. >With a Rainbow mane
  1468. >Special fucking snowflake
1469. >But what if Anon was right? What if something like that could be done?
1470. >Surely that would be the perfect ticket back into the Wonderbolt academy!
1471. >How could they pass you up then?
1472. >From Anon's description though, it sounds like whatever happened, happened the moment you took off
1473. >How the hell could any pegasus reach that kind of speed at take off?
1474. >It was up to you to find out
1475. >Not just for yourself, but for him
1476. >You had really taken to Anon these past couple of days
  1477. >Obviously
1478. >Your heart raced every time you thought about him
1479. >You were terrified that at any moment he'd realize how much he was losing by being with you
1480. >That at any moment, he'd leave you and you'd slowly revert back to how he found you
1481. >Except maybe this time, you wouldn't just think about hurting yourself and actually do it
1482. >You shook your head, doing your best to push back such thoughts
1483. >Anonymous has done nothing to show you that he would do something like that!
1484. >For perhaps the hundredth time today, you thought about what Rainbow Dash had said
1485. >All the things she said
  1486. >You were different right?
  1487. >Not desperate?
  1488. >Maybe she was right
1489. >Maybe Anonymous was better off without you
  1490.
  1491. >You are Anonymous
1492. >And frankly, you were way better off with just Lightning Dust in your life
  1493. >Twilight was still talking
1494. >Why did you come here again?
1495. >"-I mean, I understand arguing with a friend every once in a while, those things just happen, but I never imagined that you would-"
1496. >Oh man, here it comes again
1497. >You could feel the anger simmering in you once again
1498. >You never considered yourself a very irrationally angry person, but damn if these ponies didn't make it difficult since you met Dust
1499. >You kept your composure, Twilight was much more in her right mind than Rainbow Dash, and she did have a point
1500. >You had little excuse for hitting her
1501. >"-And remember what Lightning Dust did to me and the other Elements? She almost got us killed!"
1502. >Never heard that one before
1503. >Definitely not beating a dead horse or anything
1504. >Despite your rapidly souring mood, you found your own joke slightly humorous
1505. >That being said, you were beginning to question your chances of taking on an alicorn princess.
1506. >"There's just no way Lighting Dust is good for you to be around, Anonymous. There's-"
  1507. >Well, this was fun
1508. "Pretty terrible advice from someone who considers herself the Princess of Friendship."
  1509. >She looked appalled
  1510. >"E-excuse me?"
1511. >In the heat of your aggression, you moved forward, causing Twilight to instinctively back up into her castle
1512. >You slammed the door behind you
1513. >You felt your blood go cold as you could practically see yourself digging your own grave
1514. >The harrowing dread of talking back to a princess, even one as informal as Twilight, brought you back to reality almost immediately
1515. >Calm yourself and back pedal, Anon
  1516. >Back pedal hard
1517. >Surely you could rearrange this discussion into something resembling an appealing friendship lesson
  1518. >Hopefully
  1519.
  1520. >You took a breath
1521. >Don't screw this up now, there's a good chance this could actually help Lightning Dust out!
1522. >You took a deep breath, and lost your enraged demeanor
1523. >"Twilight, I feel super bad about all of this. I was just in the heat of the moment, and I regret it a ton. More than you know. In fact, that's why I came here. I need your help with all of this."
1524. >She seemed to get slightly excited at the idea of solving a problem dealing with friendship
1525. >It's like she forgot you hit Dash for a second
  1526. >"Really? Anon, I'm flattered!"
1527. >Well, not really, but this is a very convenient segue into defusing the situation
1528. >And maybe getting things to start turning around for Lightning Dust
1529. "Well, you are the Princess of Friendship, right? Uh, sorry about what I said a second ago."
1530. >Twilight seemed to accept your apology
1531. >You imagined Rainbow Dash wouldn't be so forthcoming
1532. >"It's okay Anon, I shouldn't have been so quick to lecture you. However, that doesn't change what you did to Rainbow Dash."
  1533. >You sighed
1534. "I know. I feel fucking terrible about it, okay? Rainbow Dash has been pretty much my only friend since coming to this place."
1535. >You outstretched your arms in a gesture to all of Equestria and immediately regretted doing so
1536. >The workout you had done was voicing it's opinion of the shape you were in
  1537. >Opinion noted
1538. "Although, knowing Dash, I'm sure she glossed over the things she had said to Lighting Dust."
1539. >"Rainbow told me that she insulted her and that because Lighting Dust is your new best friend, you retaliated violently."
  1540. >You rolled your eyes
1541. >Gee, she really made you the villain here
1542. >So much for being the Element of Loyalty
1543. >You informed Twilight of the things Rainbow Dash had said
1544. >You were very confident that they were word for word
1545. >Her insults had been rolling around in your brain for a while
  1546. >Twilight seemed very upset
  1547.
1548. >"Wait, so you're telling me that Lightning Dust wants to change after all of this time and Rainbow Dash wouldn't even let her speak before they started fighting?"
1549. "Yeah, that's pretty much the gist of it. I get that they have history together, but you'd think that she could at least get over it for the sake of competition or something like that."
1550. >As you voiced this, you really hoped this didn't confirm your thoughts from earlier
1551. >That perhaps Dash was jealous of Lightning Dust
  1552. >Hopefully, the competition wasn't for you
1553. >Rainbow Dash didn't know that you and Lightning Dust were together
1554. >That could be your saving grace
1555. >Twilight's face widened into an enlightened smile
1556. >"Well there's plenty of things you could do for her, Anonymous! Pinkie Pie knows plenty of ways to apologize to someone in style! She could make a cake for you, or throw the two of you a party, even. Or you could go visit one of her air shows with the Wonderbolts! I'm sure that afterwards you could meet her and-"
  1557. "Twilight."
1558. >She looked at you confused
1559. >"How about I just talk to her? Something simple. Could you get her to meet me here in the castle at some point? I think that would be best."
1560. >Twilight looked at the ground, placing a hoof to her chin while she thought
1561. >You didn't like that, you'd just prefer that she just say "yes".
  1562. >"Hey, I've got an idea!"
1563. >She walked over to you
1564. >Why does it always have to be like this
1565. >"What if you bring Lightning Dust as well? The three of you can get together and finally settle your differences! I'll be there to watch, don't worry!"
1566. >Somehow, this did nothing to comfort you
1567. >At this point, you were fairly sure nothing could stop how much Lightning Dust and Rainbow Dash hated each other
  1568. >Not even a princess
1569. >However, you had to give her credit
1570. >If the two of them did become friends, they'd be unstoppable
1571. >Rainbow Dash could help teach her some Wonderbolts routines even
1572. >It just might be worth the risk
  1573.
1574. "Alright Twilight, I'll play along, but this could really blow up in our face."
  1575. >She seemed confident
1576. >"Have a little faith, Anonymous. I won't let them hurt each other or you. If Lightning Dust really does want to turn things around, this would be a great opportunity for her to make some progress!"
1577. >You only hoped that she really did want to do that
1578. >No, you wouldn't let yourself doubt her
1579. >Even if you're setting yourself up for failure by doing so, somebody has to believe in her
1580. "Let me go talk to her, Twilight. I don't want to blindside her with all of this and have things go just like they did last time. Can you tell Rainbow Dash to meet us here tomorrow?"
  1581. >Twilight nodded emphatically
1582. >"Yes! I have a good feeling about this Anonymous! You came to the right place, and I'm glad you did. It was hard seeing Rainbow in the state she was in."
  1583. >You cringed
1584. >Yeah, you're sure it was very hard
1585. "Thank you, Twilight. I don't really deserve the chance you're giving me with all of this. I won't forget it."
  1586. >She smiled bashfully
1587. >"It's just the right thing to do, Anon. Thanks for stopping by, you should go tell Lightning Dust about all of this."
  1588. >Yeah you should
1589. >You thought about bringing up the original reason you were here but decided against it
1590. >You didn't want asking Twilight to do the training spell to make your motivation to get Lightning Dust and Rainbow Dash to be friends look disingenuous
1591. >After saying your farewell, you made your way out of the castle, frowning as you thought about the situation
1592. >This was going to get way worse before it got better
1593. >You stood there a while before the familiar noise of rapid flight brought your vision to the sky
1594. >A bright gold and blue-green streak zoomed towards you
1595. >Lightning Dust must have saw you exit the castle
  1596. >Well, isn't that just convenient
1597. >You could only hope she would be down for the idea that you and Twilight just conjured
  1598.
1599. >She began deceleration procedures as she got closer and closer to you
1600. >Before long she was only a few feet in front of you
1601. >She flapped her wings a couple of times, orienting herself upright before landing on the ground with all four hooves
  1602. >She seemed very tired
  1603. >Sad, even
1604. "I didn't expect to see you so soon! Are you okay? You look a little down."
1605. >She smiled weakly and looked up at you before staring back at her hooves
1606. >"I've just... had a while to think since I have been alone. The downside to sobriety, I guess."
1607. >You started to get a little worried
1608. "What, are you leaving me already or something?"
1609. >You meant it jokingly but she seemed to get a little defensive
1610. >An angry expression crossed her
1611. >"What?! No! If anything, I was scared you were gonna leave."
1612. >What does that even mean?
1613. "Dust, what are you talking about?"
1614. >"I-I just keep thinking about the things Rainbow Dash said to me! And she's not wrong, Anonymous! That's why it hurt in the first place!"
1615. >You relaxed your stance and listened
1616. >"Do you realize what you're throwing away by being with me? Everyone sees me as a villain for what I did at the academy! I blew my big chance, and now I'm possibly ruining yours because you want to help me get a second one. I-"
1617. >Her voice broke as she choked up
1618. >"I know this all sounds a little out of nowhere, but it's eating me alive. How are you not better off without me?"
  1619. >You were silent
1620. >You really weren't prepared for this, but you of all people understood what it was like being left alone with your thoughts
1621. >She looked directly at you
1622. >"Anon, when we both got in our formal outfits, I was having so much fun. When we kissed I- I felt like nobody had ever really thought of me that way before. I was even babbling like an idiot before you actually pulled me in. That's not like me at all! I felt so special, and now that I know what that feeling is like, I'm horrified that it might go away! I just..."
  1623. >She was crying now
1624. >"...I just don't want you to leave me."
  1625.
1626. >You couldn't believe what you were hearing
1627. >It was easy to figure out that what Rainbow had said to her bothered her
1628. >But Lightning Dust was tough, you assumed it hadn't done any horrific damage
1629. >Especially with you around to deflect some of her self-loathing
1630. >But it was all starting to become clear
1631. >Dust worked her way to the top through hard work and was cast down right back to where she started
1632. >All of her hard work had been forfeit
1633. >Her self-esteem after that was probably in shambles
1634. >After the champion of her defeat, Rainbow Dash, got the title of Wonderbolt and spat those hard truths at her yesterday like that, it was a miracle she wasn't in tears last night
1635. >And you thought it was a good idea to leave her with her thoughts
1636. >After she had been alone with them for far too long already
1637. >You were right, she was tough
  1638. >But nobody's that tough
  1639. >And nobody's invincible
1640. >She sobbed uncontrollably, the endless pent up sorrow and anger from her life events coming out in a cascade after so much time hiding it
1641. >You got a glimpse of this when she was drunk in Cloudsdale, but now there were no restraints
1642. >Your life may not have been eventful
1643. >But god damn it, it had purpose
  1644. >You aren't just some guy
1645. >And despite how much you said it to yourself, you aren't fucking lame
  1646. >You are fucking Anonymous
1647. >And Lightning Dust is your purpose
1648. >You lowered yourself to the ground and pulled her into a tight hug
1649. >Here, on the road between Twilight's castle and Ponyville, the two of you were alone
1650. >Dust's cries were muffled by your form
1651. >She wrapped herself around you, holding on to you in a tighter embrace than you have ever felt in your life
1652. >As if you would disappear forever if she let go
1653. >From one loser to another, you felt only sympathy
1654. >It's time to put this fear of hers to rest
  1655. >Once and for all
  1656.
  1657. "Lightning Dust."
  1658. >She was still crying
  1659. "Lightning Dust!"
1660. >She backed away slightly and looked up at you, her eyes were bloodshot
1661. "Stop it! Stop thinking like this! You have to get over this mental roadblock. You HAVE to get over this if you want your second chance. Yes, you messed up and got kicked out of the Wonderbolt academy, but it's okay!"
1662. >You placed a hand on her cheek
1663. >You brushed away a tear with your thumb
1664. "It's okay. That is the one thing you have never allowed yourself to be told because you're so caught up in trying to be the best you can be that you can't admit that it's fine to make a mistake, even one as big as that. You loss sight of what makes someone great at anything: a lot of failure!"
  1665. >She looked down slightly
1666. >You brushed her mane gently
  1667. >It was so soft
1668. "And Dust, I'm not going to leave you. I promise. Stop worrying about that. I don't care what I have to sacrifice to see you happy. Meeting you made me realize that life isn't about what you have. It never has been. it's about what you're willing to give, what you're willing to do to see the world become that much of a better place no matter how small the contribution may seem, and I'm willing to give everything for you."
1669. >Fresh tears fell down her face
1670. "We're a team Lightning Dust. This isn't one-sided like you think it is. You're the one who had the idea for us to train together, remember? You're allowing me to find motivation I didn't know I had. Because... Because I've never had someone like you before."
1671. >You were starting to choke up yourself
  1672. >Damn this stupid horse
1673. "We're going to do great things, Dust. I just know it, but you have to get through this."
  1674. >She sniffled, nodding
  1675. >She couldn't talk
  1676. >You smiled reassuringly
1677. "Fortunately for you, I just got done speaking to Princess Twilight, and I think I have just the way to do that."
1678. >She wiped her eyes, trying to collect herself
  1679. >"W-what do you mean?"
  1680. >You laughed
1681. "It's insane, but I'm gonna need you to trust me on this one."
  1682.
  1683. >...
1684. >"What?! I'm not doing that! There's no fucking way!"
  1685. >You groaned
1686. "Come on, Lightning Dust! What's the worst that could happen?"
1687. >She wiped her eyes and glared at you
1688. >A lot of bad things could happen
  1689. "Would you quit it?"
1690. >You gently pushed down on her snout, forcing her gaze down
1691. >A mix of offense and humor appeared on her face before a hoof flew to her nose
  1692. >"Hey! Don't touch me!"
  1693. >She was laughing
1694. >"You know I could kick your teeth in, right?"
1695. >You ruffled her hair, causing her to wince
1696. >This also brought about a slight blush
1697. >You assumed it was a little humiliating for someone who held as much pride as her
1698. >It was kind of the point
  1699. >She seemed flustered
1700. "Kick me? With your little pegasus legs? I wrestled a drunk earth pony once. I'm sure that was harder. She was flailing all over the place."
1701. >She scrambled out of your lap, shaking her head as to do her best to revert her hair back to normal
  1702. >"You wanna bet, you-"
1703. >You cut her off, doing your best not to fully break out into laughter
1704. >"I'm sorry, but is your face red?"
  1705. >Lightning Dust blushed harder
1706. >It was really easy to get her riled up
  1707. >Hm
1708. >Maybe that could be kinky in the fu-
1709. >Your thoughts were cut short as a blue blur tackled you to the ground
1710. >You completely lost the air in your lungs
1711. >It felt like someone had dropped all of Sweet Apple Acres onto your chest
1712. >Lord help the enemy of Lightning Dust
  1713. >You sputtered for a bit
  1714. "Holy shit, Dust! Mercy!"
  1715. >She grinned
1716. >In all honesty, it was a bit sinister
1717. >"No way, Anon! What was that about me being a little pegasus?!"
1718. >The two of you wrestled around for a moment before you ended up on top of her, arms on either side of her head
1719. >You were both breathing heavily
1720. >Today had been exhausting for both of you
1721. >Ironic, just this morning you were in the same position with her on top of you
1722. >You seemed to have a better poker face than Lightning Dust though
1723. >She looked to either side of her head to see your hands planted firmly and turned a bright red
  1724.
  1725. >"Um! Uh- I-"
  1726. >Wow, she was a mess
1727. >You adopted your own sinister smile
  1728. "Is something wrong, Dust?"
1729. >Her eyes narrowed in anger
  1730. >"Nothing's wrong, you jackass! It's just-"
  1731. >You raised an eyebrow
1732. >She looked side to side
  1733. >Her voice was lowered
  1734. >"We're in public, Anonymous!"
  1735. >You understood
1736. >In fact, this was eating you alive as well
1737. >The stretch of road between Twilight's Castle and Ponyville seemed like a relatively safe bet for now
1738. >Seeing her like this was too good to pass up
1739. "Lightning Dust... are you afraid of romance? You've never done this kind of stuff, have you?"
1740. >Just a moment ago, she was so confident in her victory
  1741. >Mind over matter, Anonymous
1742. >Lightning Dust looked like she might burst into flames from embarrassment
  1743. >"Anon, pleeeease!"
1744. "Hey, that's okay! I'm not very good at romance either, but I think it's fun."
1745. >You really had better things you could be doing right now
1746. >Like better negotiation of this meeting with Rainbow Dash
  1747. >But alas, you're a complete bastard
1748. >You quickly looked around for any ponies
  1749. >Nothing
1750. >You leaned down, caressing her head as you kissed her neck gently
  1751. >"ANONYMOUS! What are y- A-Ah..."
1752. >The kiss combined with one of your hands moving down her side gently cut her words short
1753. >You moved to her mouth and kissed her passionately, her eyes closing in acceptance as her body relaxed to your touch
  1754. >You pulled away
  1755. >Her eyes opened
  1756. >"Wait... what?"
1757. >You kissed her quickly one more time and stood up, dusting yourself off
1758. "Get real, Dust! We're in public! Control yourself why don't ya?"
1759. >She propelled herself off the ground, meeting you at eye level
  1760. >"B-But you-!"
  1761. "But what?"
  1762. >Her face contorted
1763. >She had no idea how to feel
1764. >This whole thing made you wonder if Dust has ever had a serious relationship
  1765. >"I thought-! AGH!"
1766. >She put her hooves to her face
1767. >You let loose your laughter now, it was all just too much
1768. >She was not so amused
  1769. >"Anonymous! QUIT IT!"
  1770.
1771. >Eventually you collected yourself, wiping moisture from your face
  1772. >"Anonymous... that's not funny."
1773. >You smiled, doing your best to reassure her that you meant no offense
1774. "Really, Dust? I thought you of all people could appreciate some good teasing."
1775. >"Yeah, I poke fun at other ponies and all I just... I don't know, I'm sensitive about that!"
  1776. >You rolled your eyes
  1777. "That's a bit hypocritical, don't you think?"
  1778. >She glared at you
1779. "Okay, okay, I'm sorry. You can holster your guns. You got to admit, it's at least a little funny."
  1780. >She managed a small giggle
  1781. >"Alright, I'll give you that."
1782. >Despite the sensible portion of your brain telling you not to, you risked getting your ass kicked by Lightning Dust once more
  1783. >"Dust... am I your first boy-?"
  1784. >Fuck
  1785. >"Coltfriend? ...Or whatever."
1786. >You didn't think you'd ever get used to horse lingo
1787. >Her anger flared once more as she assumed a strong defensive stance
  1788. >Immediately
1789. >"What?! What makes you say that?!"
1790. "Nothing in particular, just curious."
1791. >"Well, um... duh! I mean, come on, Anonymous, I'm one of the best fliers there is! Look at me! I can't keep the stallions off me most days!"
1792. >There were few things in this world less convincing than that line
  1793. >You stared at her
1794. "Right. That's why you're so worried about me leaving."
1795. >She bit her bottom lip
1796. >Shortly after, she sighed loudly, relaxing herself
1797. >"Ugh, is it that obvious? Look, I always put work before fun. Even when I was growing up. It's paid off in a lot of ways!"
1798. >She twirled swiftly around in the air, demonstrating her agility
1799. >"But... it came with a price. I never really had time for colts or much else, really. Too busy chasing that dream, I guess. When that blew up in my face it kind of left me with nothing. I never had any long term friends because of my personality. A personality that is a product of me settling for nothing other than being the best and not having interest in friends. Combine all this and you get me: a socially inept try-hard."
  1800.
1801. >She smiled wide jokingly as she described herself at the end before reverting to a deep frown
1802. >You walked over to her
1803. "Lightning Dust, I'm gonna need you to try going a day without feeling sorry for yourself. Things are better now, you can't argue that. And they're only going to get better."
  1804. >"You don't know that! What if-"
  1805. "Dust!"
1806. >She recoiled, rubbing one of her forelegs with the other sheepishly
1807. >"I can't help it, Anon! I've been feeling sorry for myself for a long time!"
1808. >You snatched her out of the air with one arm, hugging her
1809. "Well luckily, you can stop any time you'd like. Now come on, let's get something to eat. I'm fucking starving. I have done nothing but be a flabby disappoint today."
  1810. >She laughed
1811. >"What was that about feeling sorry for yourself?"
  1812. "Don't even start."
1813. >The two of you continued idle conversation as you ventured away from the outskirts of Ponyville
1814. >You both decided that the Rainbow Dash argument could be saved for when you got home
1815. >You offered to pay for lunch, and so you did
  1816. >Few words were said
1817. >Despite your negative disposition towards pony cuisine, you found yourself ravaging whatever horrific vegetarian mess they put in front of you
1818. >Lightning Dust was no better
1819. >You both shared a laugh over your combined lack of manners
1820. >More and more, you realized how nice it was to have the constant company
1821. >You found it funny that she was worried you'd leave her
1822. >It was agonizing being away from her just to work out, let alone dumping her
1823. >Why would you do that anyway?
1824. >As if you'd go crawling back to Daisy or something!
  1825. >Fuck Daisy!
  1826. >Stupid bitch!
  1827. >You still can't believe that she-
  1828. >No, Anonymous
1829. >You're with Dust now, there's no need to be petty
1830. >In short enough time, lunch was finished and you made your back to the comfort of your home
  1831.
1832. >You opened the door and Lightning Dust rushed inside, moving higher into the air before performing a front flip onto the couch
1833. >A loud creak rung out through the house
1834. "Son of a fucking bitch."
1835. >Lightning Dust was laying on her back, limbs stretched out
1836. >Her hair reached towards the ground as her head lay on the armrest
1837. >She looked towards you quizzically
  1838. >"Huh? You say something?"
  1839. >She didn't hear you
  1840. "I- nevermind."
  1841. >"Whatever you say."
1842. >You made your way to the couch, the ever present command center of your house
  1843. "Scoot over, will ya?"
  1844. >"Make me."
1845. >Without a word you picked her up with ease
  1846. >You might be a loser, but you're still a guard
1847. >Not to mention she was very light, and a fair amount smaller than you
1848. >She yelped as you did so, giggling as you threw her to the other side
1849. >She made no attempt to resist the toss, spreading across the couch
  1850. >"Oh no! I'm so hopelessly vulnerable!"
1851. >You stared her up and down
1852. >She had that look about her again
1853. >That look she gave you the first time she walked into your home
  1854. >Focus, Anon
1855. "Dust, we need to talk about tomorrow."
1856. >She sat up, staring at you accusingly
1857. >"Ya know, this is hardly fair! You can't just... just do what you were doing back there and expect me to be fine afterwards and forget about it!"
1858. >As much as you'd enjoy indulging your lover, there was business to attend to
  1859. >...
1860. >Oh who are you kidding, it was just way more fun to tease her
1861. >At least for a little while longer
1862. "Hey, I know what I did. I was there! But this is important, Dust!
  1863. >Lightning Dust shifted uncomfortably
1864. >"There are other important things we could do as well!"
1865. >Her voice was had a tinge of lust
  1866. >You looked at her
  1867. >"Ugh! Fine!"
1868. >She collapsed in your lap, her voice muffled by your leg
1869. >"So what are we doing? Talking to Rainbow Cunt about the importance of friendship?
1870. >Getting these two to work together is going to be horrendous
  1871.
1872. >"Dust, it's to teach BOTH of you the importance of friendship."
1873. >She stuck her tongue out in a mock gag
1874. >"Bleh. Don't ever say something that cheesy again. You're starting to sound like her friends."
  1875. >This was going nowhere
1876. "It's not just that. If you and Dash were friends, you'd be unstoppable. She could teach you different Wonderbolt routines. She could coach you, even."
1877. >Lightning Dust oriented herself to face you
1878. >She was a few inches from you
1879. >"Are you being serious?! Coached by Rainbow Dash?! I cannot think of anything more humiliating than that! She took everything from me, Anon!"
1880. >You stroked her golden mane, doing your best to calm her down
1881. "Whether or not that's true is irrelevant. You have to move on from this, Dust. The sooner you do, the sooner you can focus on becoming the athlete you know you are. You were thinking about Rainbow all day, right?"
1882. >She broke eye contact with you
  1883. >She didn't answer
1884. "That can only hinder you, and you know it. You were a team once, and you can do it again, I know it. You just have some catching up to do, that's all. The two of you would make Wonderbolts history!"
  1885. >She smiled slightly
1886. "And of course, there would be an asterisk next to your name explaining that you later became captain of the team."
1887. >She shoved you lightly, laughing
  1888. >"Oh, shut up."
1889. >She let out a deep, frustrated sigh
1890. >"Okay, I'll do it. I don't like it, but I'll do my best to keep myself restrained."
  1891. >She paused for a moment
1892. >"And I'll pretend to act apologetic about what happened at the academy."
  1893. >You scowled
  1894. "Dust."
  1895. >"Kidding, geez!"
1896. >Lightning Dust cuddled up closer to you, laying her head on your chest
1897. >A few moments passed before she spoke
  1898. >"I'm scared, Anonymous."
1899. >You knew, but hearing her say it brought to light just how terrified she was
1900. >It was possible that her entire future hinged on this reunion
1901. >Rainbow Dash's words carried weight in the Wonderbolts
1902. >You petted her softly, pulling her closer as you did
  1903. "I know Dust, I know."
  1904.
1905. >The rest of the day was spent in leisure
1906. >The two of you laid in your bed, simply talking about whatever came to mind
1907. >Rarely did the topic drift to something uncomfortable, but even if it did, you were both eager to make one another feel comforted
1908. >These were the moments that you found to be worth it
1909. >Lightning Dust had mentioned that you were sacrificing a lot to be with her in the past
  1910. >That was hardly true
1911. >You had never amassed anything that was worthwhile
1912. >And your only friend, Rainbow Dash, was hard to open up to
1913. >You were laying on your side, staring at her as she described a story to you
1914. >She was wearing one of your shirts again, and her hair had seen better days
1915. >Laying on her back, she waved her hooves around, using gestures to bring some sense to the story she was currently telling
1916. >"-but what she didn't know was that I had a master plan for when we hit the next curve. This was the sharpest turn in the whole race, and you had to be careful if you didn't want to fly out of control."
1917. >She was telling you the story of one of the races she won when she was younger
1918. >You smiled as she excitedly told you one after the other, and how the result was always the same
1919. >A medal around her neck, gold as her eyes
1920. >Her eyes were one of your favorite parts about her
  1921. >They were beautiful
1922. >You sort of got lost in them, and because of this it wasn't until you realized that the story was at it's end that you snapped back to reality
1923. >"-and once again, I finished first! I got the gold medal for several years in a row, actually!"
  1924. >She scowled
1925. >"Until Rainbow Dash beat me, that is. Anyway, cool, huh?"
1926. >She sat up and smiled at you, waiting for praise of her athletic prowess
  1927. >You smiled back
1928. "Ya know, you have the most beautiful eyes."
  1929. >She seemed taken aback
  1930. >"W-what?"
  1931. >She looked around briefly
1932. >"Hey! Were you even listening to me?"
1933. "Yeah, I was! I just didn't hear that last bit is all. I got distracted."
  1934.
  1935. >She seemed annoyed
  1936. >"Distracted by what?"
1937. >Man, she could be clueless
1938. "I just said what! You, Dust. I was distracted by you."
  1939. >She was hopelessly confused
1940. >"But if you were distracted by me, how come you didn't hear my story?"
1941. >She was really bad at this
1942. >Bit of a confidence booster for you, at least
  1943. "You're just really cute, that's all."
1944. >She twiddled her front hooves as she realized what you were getting at, and more importantly how it went over her head
  1945. >"I uh... Oh. I mean, thanks."
  1946. >She laughed nervously
1947. >"Wait, that sounds dumb, thanking you like that. I-"
1948. >You sat up as well now, and pulled her in close with both arms
1949. >She felt noticeably warmer as you saw color rush to her face
1950. "What was that you said earlier? You're hopelessly vulnerable?"
  1951. >"Um..."
1952. >It seemed Dust had lost her earlier confidence
1953. >Fortunately for her, you still maintained yours
1954. >This time though, the two of you weren't in public
1955. >Noticing that the sun had set a couple of hours ago, you leaned forward, using your left arm to turn off your bedside lamp as your right held onto the mare in front of you
1956. >The artificial light faded, ushering in the gentle moonlight
1957. >Lightning Dust looked at you
  1958. >She looked like a nervous wreck
1959. >You rubbed her cheek gently
1960. "What are you so scared of?"
1961. >She looked down, and in a moment of blunt truth she stated how she felt
1962. >A nice summation of how she's felt since the moment you two met
1963. >"That at any moment, I'm going to screw this up."
  1964. >She paused for only a moment
  1965. >"Just like last time."
1966. >After that, there was nothing you'd rather be doing than sitting here in the comfort of night with Lightning Dust
1967. "That's not going to happen."
1968. >You pulled her into a deep kiss, pulling away a few moment later
  1969. "Now... where were we?"
1970. >You placed a hand on her chest and pushed gently, lowering her to the bed as you assumed the position the two of you held earlier in front of the castle
1971. >With your hand where it was, you could feel Lightning Dust's heart begin to race
  1972.
1973. >She looked at you, waiting to see what you'd do next
1974. >A mixture of excitement and anxiety radiated from her whole body
1975. >Her chest was moving up and down rapidly with her breaths
1976. >Your handed moved up her body, up her neck, and stopped at her cheek
  1977. "Relax."
1978. >You picked up right where you left off, bringing yourself down to kiss her neck as your hand moved back down her body
1979. >She inhaled sharply as your lips met her fur
1980. >After a moment you broke the contact
1981. >Her eyes opened half way to investigate
1982. >She seemed relatively more relaxed now
1983. >You leaned down to kiss her, her eyes softly closing as she met you
1984. >Meanwhile, your hand began to explore the rest of her body
1985. >Her fur glided between your fingers
  1986. >She was so soft
1987. >You dared to move lower, your hands gripping at her cutie mark
1988. >She was incredibly fit, there wasn't much give
  1989. >Nice
1990. >You silently hoped that she wouldn't hurt you when this got heavy
1991. >Or maybe you hoped that she would, hard to say!
1992. >You squeezed her once more, and a soft moan came from her
1993. >You felt the vibrations run through your mouth
  1994. >You backed up
  1995. >You couldn't help but laugh lightly
  1996. >"What? Did I do something wrong?"
1997. >You immediately assured her that everything was fine
1998. >"It's just... cute seeing you like."
  1999. >She smirked
  2000. >"Shut up."
2001. >She put a hoof on the back of your head and pulled your head back down, putting her mouth to your ear
  2002. >"Lower."
  2003. >Aye aye, captain
2004. >You returned to the kiss and your hands moved between her hind legs as they widened for you
2005. >You slid your hand down lower, touching her gently
2006. >Her legs instinctively moved closed as she gasped
2007. >You looked to her for approval
  2008. >She nodded gently
  2009. >"G-go slow."
  2010.
  2011. >Of course
2012. >Softly, you began to rub her lower lips, creating gentle circles and changing emphasis on different areas with varied pressure
2013. >Lightning Dust's back arched briefly as her body pleaded for a more aggressive touch
2014. >Her breathing became rapid once more, her mouth agape as her mind wrestled with the ever-increasing waves of pleasure
2015. >She couldn't continue the kiss you had held with her up until now, and as you dared to delve your first finger into her, her forehead rested against yours for support.
2016. >One finger quickly became two
2017. >You hadn't needed Dust to tell you to continue, your fingers were soaked at this point, and you could even feel the bed sheets beneath her begin to dampen
2018. >Faster and faster, you pumped your hand into her
2019. >Her body quaked each and every time your knuckle met the walls of her body
2020. >Her face became more red
  2021. >Her breath was hot
2022. >And even her moans were becoming cut more and more short as you quickened your pace
  2023. >"A-Ah, A-Anon! I'm- I'm gonna-"
  2024. >You were aware
  2025. >"P-please! Don't stop! AHN!"
2026. >Even through your pummeling, she found a way to let out a long moan, one that increased in volume as it reached its end
2027. >Her legs wrapped your arm as you felt her tighten around you
2028. >A fresh font of warm liquid flowed from her, onto your hand
2029. >Her wings flared out from beneath her with her pleasured scream, and slowly began to retract as she breathed heavily
2030. >You pulled your fingers from her and leaned down to her
2031. >She grabbed your head with both forehooves and pulled you in for an especially sloppy kiss
2032. >Her tongue danced around in your mouth with a lusty enthusiasm
2033. >She was the first to pull away this time
2034. >"Anonymous... I-I needed that more than you know."
2035. >Your kiss continued, and caught in each other's passion, you rolled so that Dust was oriented on top of you
2036. >Your arms were getting tired anyway
2037. >You swore you could feel a faint drip on the other end of Lightning Dust pattering against your body as she laid on top of you.
  2038.
2039. >Lightning Dust's hips began moving instinctively, grinding against your lower body in rhythmic motions
2040. >Her pace and force rose, her moist lips tracing where your hardened shaft laid behind your clothes
2041. >You could feel them wrapped around you, urging you to satisfy her the only way you knew how
2042. >With about two minutes of thrusting, and twenty minutes of apologizing!
2043. >Here's hoping this wouldn't go so bad
2044. >Dust failed to maintain the kiss, her grinding seemed to almost bring her to the edge of yet another climax
2045. >Frankly, it was beginning to get too much for you to bear
2046. >With the grace of a one-legged drunk, you managed to throw your own pants off with Lightning Dust situated on top of you
2047. >Your erect member, now unblocked, stood at full attention between Lightning Dust's flanks
  2048. >Already, it was soaked
2049. >You hadn't allowed Dust to finish herself off humping you, so she wasted no time
2050. >She leaned in for a quick kiss, her tongue tracing the roof of your mouth
  2051. >"Ready?"
  2052. >You could only manage a nod
2053. >Anticipation and libido coursed through you as you waited for her
2054. >She pushed herself up, placing her forehooves on your chest
2055. >She tossed her head, moving a loose strand of golden hair behind her
  2056. >Her mane was a mess
2057. >And you'd be lying if you said that wasn't doing something for you
2058. >She arched her back, lifting her lower half above your shaft
2059. >She bit her bottom lip as your tip entered her
  2060. >She was warm
  2061. >And very, very wet
2062. >Not wanting to deny herself any longer, Lightning Dust sat down on top of you, a wet sound emanating as your body's met
2063. >Fully inserting yourself into Dust caused your own constitution to fail, a moan escaping you as you felt her from the inside
2064. >She breathed heavily, letting herself adjust to the feeling of you within her
2065. >Your hands went for her sides before they lowered to grab onto either of her flanks
2066. >Feeling the hardened curves of her body spread across you made your blood burn
  2067.
2068. >You could feel yourself twitch inside her as you awaited her first movements
2069. >Lightning Dust brought her hips forward before moving them back again
2070. >Whether or not she was attempting to be quiet before hand, she could no longer maintain her relative silence
2071. >Fresh beads of sweat fell from her as she lost herself in her gyrations
2072. >Your whole bed began to creak as she grew more and more furious with her motions, her fluids pouring over you as she reached another climax
2073. >While she screamed her approval, it did not slow her down
2074. >Months of frustration and loneliness fell from her with each thrust
2075. >She leaned backwards, placing her hooves on either side of the bed
2076. >Her mane fell between her outstretched wings as she brought her head back
2077. >She brought herself up and down, bringing you almost completely out of her before slamming back down on you with more force than before
2078. >With each pump, she let out a louder and louder moan
2079. >You had no idea how you lasted this long, but you thanked whatever divine being granted you with such endurance
2080. >Before long, you felt her body tense once more as a fresh wave doused your already soaked lower body
2081. >She stopped for a moment, her chest heaving from her exertions
2082. >She brought her head back to it's natural position and looked at you
  2083. >Her face was red
2084. >A smile crept across her face as she looked at you
2085. >Her eye's adopted a wonderful harmony of sinister and sexy
2086. >As she spoke, a single drop of sweat dropped from her face
2087. >"Come on, Anonymous. I want you to finish me off."
2088. >It would seem that you have witnessed the return of the more malevolent Lightning Dust
  2089. >What wonderful timing
2090. >"I want you to push your limits."
  2091. >Oh man
2092. >"I want you to grab hold of me, and give me what I need!"
2093. >Whether it was supposed to or not, the next part nearly came out as a command
2094. >"I want you to fuck me!"
2095. >With zealous fury, you sat up and grabbed her, throwing her onto her back
  2096.
2097. >You took each of her hind legs in your hands and threw them behind you
2098. >Leaning down, you wrapped your arms around her whole body
2099. >Her forelegs reciprocated as she threw them around your neck
2100. >Quickly, you inserted yourself into her, a moan erupting from her as you went to your hilt
2101. >You will give her what she needed
  2102. >You will fuck her
2103. >And god damn it, you will fuck her well
2104. >With a awe-inspiring combination of force and speed, you pummeled her lower body
2105. >Her wings firmly flapped each time you collided with her body
2106. >Her eyes practically rolled to the back of her head
2107. >"Y-yes! Yes, Anon! Ah-AH! AH! Fuck me! FUCK M- AH!"
2108. >You moved your hands to her sides, gripping them as to move her body yourself, bringing her to meet you with each and every thrust you delivered
2109. >While it had been a strange and trying journey for both of you, in this moment, the two of you could only worry about each other
  2110. >No Wonderbolts
  2111. >No Rainbow Dash
2112. >Just the two of you, lost in each other's passion
2113. >She must have noticed the look on your face
2114. >"Just give it all to me, Anon! Don't stop! DON'T STOP!"
  2115. >You needed no persuasion
2116. >What started as quiet moans, became louder and louder before you felt your shaft swell with the release it desired
2117. >Doing only as she instructed, you pulled Lightning Dust close to you and thrust into her one final time
2118. >You dug your fingers into her back as you held her, and her hooves clutched you for support
2119. >Your heads were on either side of each other, and you could feel her hot breath across you as she breathed in unison with each pulse of your seed
2120. >It took several seconds to empty yourself into her
2121. >And you had never experienced anything in your life quite like those seconds
2122. >You looked down to find that you filled her up rapidly, strands of white leaking out of her as you continued pumping
2123. >Even after you finished, the two of you remained embracing one another, coming down from your ecstasy
2124. >There was only the sound of your breathing
  2125.
2126. >The heat of what had just transpired kept your bodies against one another for some time before your grip slowly weakened on her
2127. >You backed up from her and faced her
  2128. >Her eyes slowly opened
  2129. >She nervously chuckled
  2130. >"I got a little carried away there, didn't I?"
  2131. >You smiled
2132. "Not a chance. I didn't really make a show of restraint either."
2133. >She closed her eyes once again, leaning in for a kiss
2134. >You met her, the two of you relishing the contact only briefly
2135. "We need to get to sleep. I got a feeling tomorrow is gonna be one for the storybooks."
  2136. >She sighed wistfully
  2137. >"Yeah, you're probably right."
2138. >She slid herself off of you and fell forward, bringing you onto your back
2139. >She rolled off of you to one side
2140. >Pulling the blanket over both of you, you turned to her and pulled her in close
2141. >She huddled next to you, tucking in her wings so that she may fit as close to you as possible
2142. >In similar fashion to the night before, you began to gently stroke her coat as you watched a smile spread across her face in tandem with her falling eyelids
2143. >All was silent as you felt yourself ushered to sleep
2144. >Just as you were about to give into your dreams, you heard her muffled voice
  2145. >"I love you."
  2146. >You opened your eyes
  2147. >For several moments you didn't act
2148. >Did she just say what you thought she said?
2149. >You were aware it was a phrase that was thrown around a lot, but when it came from her, something was different
2150. >After only a few seconds of rumination, you realized why
2151. >It's because you felt the same
2152. "I love you too, Lightning Dust."
  2153. >You hugged her tightly
2154. "I love you so much."
2155. >In all truth, the future for you two was shrouded
2156. >While you were hopeful, there was absolutely no guarantee that the Wonderbolts would ever give her the time of day
2157. >And there was no guarantee that you would ever wield a blade for any reason other than formality
2158. >Nights like these, however, felt possible
2159. >And you saw them in your future
2160. >As long as Dust was with you, little else mattered
  2161.
2162. >"Anonymous? Anonymous wake the hell up!"
2163. >Your beautiful slumber was once again cut violently short as Lightning Dust threw you back into the land of the living
2164. >She was sitting on the bed, beating your chest with her forehooves
2165. >Was this really going to be every morning of your life now?
2166. >Surely, she would let you sleep some days
  2167. >Right?
2168. >She flopped down on top of you
2169. >"Holy shit, you're like a rock, dude! It's like you're dead to the whole world!"
  2170. >You shoved her off
2171. "Or maybe I'm sleeping like every normal fucking creature at this hour."
  2172. >She wasn't convinced
2173. >"Oh come on! If the sun is up, you should be too! That's how it was intended to work, right?"
  2174. >You grumbled
  2175. "Not at all."
  2176. >She laughed
2177. >"Listen to you! Whine, whine, whine! I need to get you acclimated to this kind of life before-"
2178. >You blindsided her with a pillow, her whole body crashing to the bed
2179. >A blue-green feather was flung loose with your assault
2180. >It swayed back and forth in the air as it fell to the ground
2181. >She scrambled to her hooves
2182. >Her eyes crackled with the spirit of competition
  2183. >"Did you just fucking-"
2184. "Listen to you. Whine, whine, whine."
  2185. >She couldn't believe your audacity
2186. "I'm gonna go brush my teeth."
2187. >You made it to the door right before that same pillow smashed into the back of your head
2188. >You damn near lost your footing
2189. >You turned to her slowly, mock anger on your face
2190. >You stared deep into her eyes, taking upon the most serious demeanor you could
2191. "You just screwed up so bad, you little shit."
2192. >Without breaking eye contact, Lightning Dust reached for another pillow next to her
  2193. >She gripped it tightly
2194. >"Come. The fuck. At me."
2195. >There were worse ways to waste a morning
2196. >And she did just wake you up in the middle of some well-deserved sleep
2197. >You looked down to the pillow
  2198. >Then back to her
2199. >Then to the pillow again
2200. >You reached for it, and with speed deserving of her namesake, Lightning Dust charged towards you
  2201.
2202. >The next few minutes were spent thrashing one another
2203. >Through what you would call tactical retreats, the fight made its way to the living room
2204. >Eventually, Lightning Dust expertly dodged one of your swings before spinning around into an overhead swing with her pillow
  2205. >She came down like a meteor
2206. >Your vision became engulfed with fluffy white before shifting to a mixture of colored blurs as your senses tried to come back online
2207. >Through the haze, you saw Lightning Dust put a hoof to her mouth
2208. >You shook your head and the stars you were seeing began to fade
2209. >It would seem Dust was worried her competitive nature got the better of her again
2210. >"Oh my gosh, are you alright? I'm sorry!"
2211. >You were totally fine, but you laid it on a little thick just to get a rise out of her
  2212. "I... I uh..."
2213. >You exaggerated a swaying motion, threatening to fall over at any moment
  2214. >"Ah shit! Um! Hold on, I'll-"
2215. >As fast as you could manage, you tackled Lightning Dust to the couch
2216. >A playful scream erupted from her as you made contact
2217. >You immediately abused your significant size difference and pinned her
2218. >"Anon, you son of a bitch! You tricked me!"
  2219. >She was laughing
  2220. >"Let me go!"
2221. "Admit defeat and I will!"
2222. >It was way too easy to abuse her personality
2223. >She struggled, but said nothing suggesting surrender
2224. >You were afraid it would come to this
2225. >Deflecting whatever thoughts of mercy came to you, you resorted to the greatest advantage your species had over this one
  2226. >Fingers
  2227. >You began tickling her
2228. >There was little she could do to move from her current situation
2229. >Lightning Dust's strength was her speed, and it would not save her here
  2230. >Her fate was sealed
2231. >As you started, a look of horrified realization fell upon her
  2232. >"Wait, wait w-whAT ARE YOU DOING? A-ANON! STOP!"
2233. >She wiggled beneath you, unable to break free from your oppressive form
2234. >You really hoped Twilight wasn't waiting on you or anything
2235. "I told you! I told you that you screwed up! Give up! Say it!"
  2236. >"NEVER!"
  2237.
2238. >You were unfamiliar with pegasi physiology, but you had a guess as to what might make her finally give in
2239. >You worked your way up her body, arriving at her wings
2240. >You put emphasis on the spot where her wings met her body
  2241. >She flapped them vigorously
2242. >"ANONYMOUS! STOP! STOP! AH! I GIVE UP!"
  2243. >You continued
  2244. >You were truly a monster
2245. "Sorry, what was that? I couldn't hear you. Some mare was screaming in my ear!"
2246. >Through her laughter, you were able to catch subtle hints that as soon as this was over, she would feed you your teeth
  2247. >"I SAID I GIVE UP!"
  2248. >You relinquished
2249. >She balled up into a defensive position
2250. >She wrapped her forelegs around her knees and then wrapped herself in her wings
2251. >You could see her nose and the tops of her eyes peaking out
2252. >She was glaring at you, breathing heavily
  2253. >All was silent for a moment
2254. >"I'm going to kill you."
  2255. >You broke into laughter
2256. "Get yourself together Dusty, we got a meeting with the princess."
  2257. >She grumbled angrily
2258. >"You know... I only gave up because-"
  2259. "Don't even start."
2260. >This caused her to get even more defensive, but you did your best to ignore her while you prepared for the day ahead
2261. >Soon after your bickering, the two of you left for the castle
2262. >And whatever horrors awaited you there
2263. >Honestly, you'd be surprised if Rainbow Dash even showed up
2264. >More surprised if she showed up unarmed
2265. >Lightning Dust and you didn't talk very much on the way
2266. >There was little to say
2267. >What exactly were you hoping to come of this?
2268. >Each time you took a different angle to look at it, it seemed like a worse idea than before
2269. >But you supposed the princess knew best
2270. >Lightning Dust opted to walk next to you instead of fly
2271. >The closer you got to the castle, the closer she seemed to get to you
2272. >You're not really sure why
2273. >If anyone was doing the protecting, it'd be her
2274. >There's no way you could keep up with Dash if she decided to do something rash
2275. >In no time at all, you arrived at the crystalline fortress
  2276.
2277. >The two of you stood at the door, eyeing it up and down
  2278. >Lightning Dust shifted uncomfortably
  2279. >"Well, go on. Knock."
2280. >You swiveled to look at her
2281. "Give me a break, will ya? I'm nervous too!"
2282. >Reluctantly, you lifted your hand and struck the door
2283. >Silence returned as you waited for an answer
2284. >You secretly hoped there wouldn't be one
2285. >You really wish you hadn't roped yourself into this situation
2286. >However, as planned, the Princess of Friendship soon appeared before you
2287. >What you saw made you very uncomfortable
2288. >She was smiling wide, but her eyes betrayed her
  2289. >She looked incredibly worried
2290. >You and Dust exchanged concerned looks before you inquired
  2291. >"Princess? Is everything alright?"
2292. >"Um, yes! W-why would anything not be? Rainbow Dash is here! Yep! She's here alright!"
  2293. >Oh no
  2294. >What has she done?
2295. "Twilight, I feel like you wouldn't be freaking out this much if everything was going according to plan. Call it a gut feeling."
2296. >She looked quickly from left to right, biting her lower lip
2297. >"Well um... you see, R-Rainbow dash really didn't want to come at first!"
  2298. >You could imagine
  2299. "Go on."
2300. >"Soooo we made a deal! She argued that you and Lightning Dust had each other to bounce off of during the meeting and that she'd feel teamed up on if she didn't have a friend there with her."
  2301. >That makes sense
2302. >Unfortunately, that didn't change how incredibly terrified you were now
2303. "This whole thing is between me, Dash, and Dust! Nobody else! Who the hell did she bring?"
2304. >A few beads of sweat fell from the princess
2305. >Lightning Dust lost her patience
2306. >"Spit it out! Who did she bring with her?"
2307. >Twilight rubbed one of her legs with another
  2308. >"Oh nobody... just a uh... a Wonderbolt."
2309. >You felt your heart sink
2310. >You could already imagine Rainbow Dash's gambit to keep Lightning Dust out of their ranks forever
  2311.
2312. "Who did she bring Twilight? Which Wonderbolt specifically? Come on, tell me it's Blaze! Nobody gives a shit about Blaze! She's like Diet Spitfire!"
  2313. >Twilight gulped
2314. >"Actually... that is who she brought."
2315. >You breathed a sigh of relief and turned to Dust
2316. "We're good. There's no way that Blaze could ever-"
  2317. >Twilight interrupted you
2318. >There was much more sweat forming on her brow now
2319. >"N-no, I meant Spitfire. She brought Spitfire."
  2320. >The silence was deafening
2321. >Lightning Dust was the first to speak
2322. >You could see her shaking lightly
2323. >"She b-brought Spitfire? The captain of the whole team?"
  2324. >Twilight nodded
2325. >Dust brought a hoof to her head
  2326. >She was panicking
  2327. >Well, rightfully so
  2328. >"SHIT! Shit! Shit! Shit!"
2329. >She flew over to you, hovering in front of you
2330. >Her eyes glimmered with the sign of tears
2331. >"Anonymous! We can't go through with this! I-I'm not ready! Rainbow Dash is going to use this opportunity to make me look as awful as possible in front of Spitfire and if she does that then there's-"
2332. >You placed your hands on either side of Lightning Dust, grabbing her as hard as you could
2333. "DUST! Get yourself together! Don't you see you're doing exactly what Rainbow wants you to do?"
  2334. >She was stunned
  2335. >"I- I don't-"
2336. "If you walk away now, you'll look like a fucking coward! In front of Spitfire! If you don't want to face her, it must mean you think that you don't have what it takes to be a Wonderbolt, and if you don't believe you should get a second chance, why should she?"
2337. >You could tell you were getting through to her
2338. >"Being a Wonderbolt is more than being a good athlete. It takes heart! It takes guts! So show her that you have both!"
2339. >You could see a fire ignite in her eyes
2340. >She looked at you before bringing you into a hug that ate away at the integrity of your spine
2341. >Poor Twilight was being sent on a roller coaster of emotions
2342. >Dust pulled away and wiped her eyes
  2343. >She was smiling
  2344. >"Let's do this. Together."
  2345.
  2346. >Twilight sniffled
2347. >"Oh, you two are just adorable. That was so sweet! I should really write-"
  2348. "Twilight. The meeting."
2349. >Her ears perked up with realization
2350. "Right! They're probably tired of waiting. Follow me!"
2351. >You and Dust smiled at each other before entering the castle
2352. >Twilight lead you through intricately twisting hallways, eventually bringing you to the central map room of her castle
2353. >She stopped at the door
  2354. >"Okay, they're on the other side."
  2355. >She took a deep breath
  2356. >"Are you ready?"
  2357. >Absolutely not
2358. >You could hear muttered conversation on the other side
  2359. "We're ready."
2360. >Twilight pushed open the door
2361. >"I heard you the first time Dash. I'm sticking by my decision."
  2362. >That sure was Spitfire
2363. >You really hoped she didn't mean keeping Dust out of the Wonderbolts
2364. >"Okay okay, just make sure that- Oh."
2365. >And that sure was Dash
  2366. >"Hey, Anonymous."
2367. >She was not happy to see you
  2368. >Well, neither were you
2369. >But you did not come this far to be a doormat now
  2370. >Spitfire be damned
2371. >Now might be a good time to let your attitude get the better of you
  2372. >For once
2373. >You sat down in one of the vacant harmony thrones
2374. >You situated yourself into one across from Spitfire
2375. >Dust took a seat to the right of you
  2376. >Across from Rainbow Dash
2377. >Come on Anon, speak up
2378. "It's good to see you Rainbow Dash."
  2379. >You turned to Spitfire
  2380. "Good morning."
  2381. >Her eyes narrowed
  2382. >"That's 'Good morning, ma'am' to you."
2383. >You made yourself comfortable in the throne
  2384. "You're not my superior."
2385. >Your statement was flat and to the point
2386. >Your confidence actually seemed to catch her off guard
2387. >It's possible that she thought very little of you in the past
2388. >Just some monkey-boy trying to make a living by leaning on one of her prized cadets
2389. >"I suppose I should take that as a formal notice of you quitting?"
  2390. >You shrugged
2391. >"Fire me if it makes you feel better. I'm sure it would do well for your bloated ego."
2392. >She leaned back and smirked
2393. >Twilight had made her way to the edge of the room, watching with bated breath
  2394.
2395. >Dust looked to you with eyes pleading for you to tone it down
  2396. >Whatever
2397. >Spitfire then greeted Lightning Dust
  2398. >She was visibly nervous
2399. >She looked to you for comfort
  2400. >You smiled reassuringly
2401. >It was the best you could do in this situation
2402. >Lightning Dust collected herself as best she could
  2403. >"Good morning, ma'am."
2404. >You kind of scowled at her formality
2405. >But you weren't sure if that made you look bad or made her look good
2406. >It was time you addressed the elephant in the room
2407. >"Why are you even here? This is between me, Dust, and Dash."
  2408. >Spitfire remained stoic
2409. >"You assaulted one of my cadets. I have a right to be here, Anonymous."
  2410. >She remembered your name
  2411. >Interesting
2412. "Rainbow Dash is more than capable of handling her problems without her supervisor."
  2413. >You turned to Dash
2414. "I know this doesn't mean much to you, and it shouldn't, but I am very sorry Rainbow."
2415. >She broke eye contact with you, looking down
2416. "You deserve much better than me. You've helped me out a great deal."
2417. >You saw a faint smile on her face
2418. "However, that doesn't change what you said to Lightning Dust. I overreacted, sure, but you did as well."
2419. >Your words seem to sting
2420. >You hadn't thought of the possibility that Rainbow Dash regretted her actions
  2421. >That just didn't seem like her
  2422. >"I-I'm sorry too, Anonymous."
  2423. >Was this really happening?
  2424. >Spitfire chimed in now
2425. >"Which brings me to the answer to your question. Rainbow Dash told me everything, and judging by how poor her actions seem, I'm assuming she didn't leave out any details."
  2426. >Rainbow shook her head
2427. >"If it were up to me, Anonymous, I'd crack your skull open for hitting her, but that's not why she brought me here. She insists that I remain composed."
2428. >Spitfire's bravado always pissed you off
2429. "Oh please, fly off the hook. Make my day."
2430. >Lightning Dust whirred over to face you
  2431. >"Anonymous!"
2432. >Spitfire raised a hoof, signaling her to stop talking
2433. >"Dash brought me here to reevaluate Lightning Dust's candidacy for the Wonderbolts."
  2434.
2435. >Okay, now you were thrown off balance
2436. >There's no way you heard that correctly
2437. >You looked all around you for validation
2438. >You first turned to Lightning Dust
  2439. >She wasn't even looking at you
2440. >Her eyes were fixated on Spitfire
2441. >She was still processing the information
2442. >It was hard to tell what she was feeling, honestly
2443. >You then looked to the princess, who seemed just as dumbfounded as you
2444. >Your eyes met and judging by your similar expressions, she had no idea that this was going to happen
2445. >Lightning Dust turned to Rainbow Dash
2446. >"I-I don't understand. After all of those things you said about me... after what happened at the academy... why?"
2447. >Rainbow Dash smiled at you before turning to Lightning Dust
2448. >"Well... I'd be lying if I said I have never screwed up."
  2449. >Spitfire nodded
2450. >"Like that time you threw a storm cloud into our routine, endangering ponies much like Lightning Dust at the academy."
  2451. >She winced
  2452. >"Y-yeah."
  2453. >Her captain continued
2454. >"And while it wasn't dangerous, there was that time you tried to impersonate your friends. That was one of the most-"
2455. >"Okay, okay, I get it! The point is that I'd be a hypocrite if I didn't give you at least one other chance. And while it sucks to admit, I didn't even let Anon make a case before I jumped to a conclusion."
2456. >She looked down for a moment, collecting herself before she looked to you
2457. >"When you hit me, I-I felt so... hurt. I didn't know what to do so I just flew off. It wasn't long though before I realized how I acted. I wanted to make it up to you. Besides, if you're hanging out with Dust, she must be better now, right?"
  2458. >You were speechless
  2459. >This didn't feel right
2460. >Dash had just done both you and Dust a massive favor
2461. >Once again, she was looking out for you
2462. >While you were sure it was genuine, it felt wrong that she seemed to be taking most of the blame
2463. >There had to be some way you could make it up to her
  2464.
2465. >Spitfire looked to Dust, who was almost in tears
2466. >"Not so fast. There are a few conditions first."
  2467. >Lightning Dust nodded
  2468. >"Anything!"
  2469. >Spitfire leaned forward
2470. >"Don't think I share Dash's willingness to bring you back. You're a fantastic flier, but you showed little to no restraint in pursuit of your own self image."
2471. >Dust's ears fell down as she heard Spitfire's criticisms
2472. >You made no move to defend her, she was right, after all
2473. >The veteran pegasus gestured to Rainbow Dash
2474. >"However, that seems to be a running theme. So I'm willing to give you a chance."
2475. >Dash seemed offended, but knew better than to voice her opposition
2476. >"That is if, and only if, you get your act together. You'll start at the bottom in the academy where you belong. You'll work your way up from there, and Celestia help you if I find even one chore that isn't occupied by your miserable form. I'm going to make your life hell Lightning Dust, are we clear?"
  2477. >Lightning Dust radiated determination
  2478. >"Yes ma'am!"
2479. >If Spitfire was happy, she didn't show it
2480. >"Good. Then that leaves one more thing."
  2481. >Rainbow was smiling now
  2482. >Spitfire continued
2483. >"I need to make sure you're even qualified for admission. It's been a long time since we've seen you fly."
  2484. >Dust didn't seem scared at all
2485. >"I'll pass any of those tests! The physical exam wasn't that-"
  2486. >Spitfire cut her off
2487. >"I have something else in mind versus the normal physical test, and while we're at it, we'll put an old rivalry to rest. I want you to race Rainbow Dash."
  2488. >Dash couldn't contain herself
2489. >"Awesome right?! You could argue I got made Lead Pony by default since you were kicked out. I say this is a good opportunity to settle the score, once and for all! It'll be just like old times!"
2490. >Spitfire laughed for the first time today
2491. >"I don't expect you to beat a full-fledged member of the Wonderbolts, but it will serve as a worthy evaluation for someone with your flight record. What do you say, Dust? You in?"
  2492.
2493. >Dust turned to you, her eyes sparkling with the revitalization of her dream
2494. >It all sounded too good to be true, but you couldn't help but smile for her
2495. >Her wings were flapping rapidly in excitement, and her smile lit up the room with its dominating presence
2496. >"Yes! Yes, of course I'm in! I'll do whatever you need me to do!"
2497. >Rainbow Dash jumped in the air, performing a quick loop
2498. >"Aw yeah! It is SO on!"
2499. >You could tell Dash was genuinely looking forward to this
2500. >With Dust realizing her mistakes of the past, you had a feeling that the two of them would go on to become very good friends
2501. >Who knows what heights they could reach if they continued to work off of each other?
2502. >Rainbow flew over to Lightning Dust, who was now airborne as well
2503. >"I'm not wasting anymore time! I'm gonna go get some warm-up laps in. Get ready Dust, 'cause I'm waaaaay better than I was when you met me at the academy!"
2504. >She sped off to the exit of the castle
2505. >Lightning Dust, laughing, was quick to follow her
2506. >Twilight scowled as a few loose papers here and there took to the air as a result of their swift departure
2507. >You were sure she had strong opinions about flying indoors
2508. >An opinion you likely shared
2509. >You stared at the door the two pegasi had flown out of
2510. >You can't even imagine how Lightning Dust is feeling right now
2511. >"You care about her a lot, huh?"
2512. >You didn't turn, but out of the corner of your eye you could see the fiery figure of the Wonderbolt captain
  2513. "Yeah. I do."
2514. >You weren't kidding. Without her and Dash, you effectively had nobody in this pastel world
  2515. >She was quiet for a moment
2516. >"Well, I guess someone has to. What about Dash?"
  2517. >You sighed deeply
2518. "I'm not sure how, but I'm going to make it up to her. Getting you here and somehow convincing you to give Dust another chance was probably the nicest thing anyone has ever done for me."
2519. >You looked over to Spitfire now
2520. "I suppose I have you to ultimately thank for that though."
  2521.
  2522. >She chuckled
2523. >"I appreciate the sentiment, but that's not what I was talking about."
  2524. >You raised an eyebrow
2525. >You weren't sure what she was getting at
2526. >"Dash would do just about anything for you."
  2527. >Oh
2528. >That's what she was getting at
2529. >"Dash is... a good friend. A great friend. Probably the best I could ever ask for. And as far as burdens go, I am about as big as they come. Despite me walking out on the job she secured for me and even hitting her, she still goes to great lengths to make me happy."
  2530. >Spitfire smiled
2531. >"Ya know, I hear they call her the Element of Loyalty."
  2532. >You rolled your eyes
  2533. >She had a point though
  2534. "I just... I just don't think I see Dash that way."
  2535. >Spitfire nodded
2536. >She did her best to divert the conversation
2537. >"Why did you walk out on the job anyway? And I promise not to bark at you."
  2538. >You didn't believe her, but whatever
2539. "Rainbow Dash kind of pitched the job like it was a bodyguard position. Evidently, that wasn't the case. I mean, I should have seen it coming. You guys are probably more than capable of defending yourselves. I guess I just didn't envision myself counting tickets when I graduated the academy. This was during the Cloudsdale show, so you guys were pulling out all of the stops for the show. I got tired of standing there for so long so I just left to get a drink. That's it. I intended on coming back, but uh... I got a little preoccupied."
2540. >Spitfire seemed to think better of you since you meant to return to your post
2541. >"What exactly happened that kept you from coming back?"
  2542. >This was embarrassing
2543. "I um... forgot to renew the cloud-walk spell thingy."
2544. >You kind of trailed off
  2545. >Her eyes went wide
2546. >"Wait. You fell from Cloudsdale? How did your survive?"
  2547. >You waved your hand
2548. "Long story short, Dust saved me."
2549. >She seemed surprised by your tale
2550. >You couldn't tell if she was more shocked by your stupidity or Dust's compassion
  2551.
2552. >"Hm. I suppose that would keep you from being able to return to the stadium."
  2553. >You nodded
2554. "Yeah. I don't have wings. Not to mention I was in pretty bad shape after the fall."
2555. >The two of you didn't speak for a moment, until you heard Spitfire's quiet laughter
2556. >"You say that we can handle ourselves, but that's not entirely true."
2557. >You felt like there was story tied to this one
  2558. "Is that so?"
  2559. >She continued
2560. >"Yes. The Wonderbolts have had plenty of bad experiences from fans and attention seekers. Soarin and I fair well enough, but not all of us have combat backgrounds, you know."
  2561. >You were listening
2562. >"We have actually had a couple of bodyguards in the past, but the position generally isn't permanent because most of them come from the royal guard. We are considered VIPs after all. Sooner or later, they would return to their positions in Canterlot. Duty calls and all of that."
2563. >You were very surprised by what she was saying
2564. "Did you really require someone as experienced as a royal guard to protect you?"
2565. >"We're the Wonderbolts. Just about everyone knows our name, for better or for worse. There are plenty of ponies out there who just want to make a headline, Anonymous. No matter how they do it."
2566. >You were just going to choose to believe that that vague statement didn't imply that there have been assassination attempts on the Wonderbolts
2567. >"Some things are less serious. Just the other day, some dumbass tried to attack Rapidfire. I don't even remember why. Something about waiting in line for an autograph. We got the guy off of him but not before Rapidfire was a bit roughed up. Our security personnel are generally stretched thin, it's no wonder it took them a bit to react."
2568. >As interesting as all of this was, it was confusing why you were talking to Spitfire in the first place, stranger still that she vomiting all of this information onto you
  2569.
2570. "Why are you telling me all of this?"
2571. >A faint smile crossed her face
2572. >"How good are you with that, anyway?"
2573. >She brought a hoof up to point at your ever-present sword attached to your side
2574. >"You were talking a lot of shit to me back there. Not a lot of people do that. You got an attitude, but you got guts. That can be useful."
2575. >There's no way she was doing what you thought she was doing
2576. "Are you... trying to hire me as a bodyguard? Like, an actual one?"
  2577. >She shrugged
2578. >"I'm just saying that if you really are good at fighting, then it could be a nice fit. Not a lot of ponies have seen your kind before. That alone would deter a lot of people who were thinking of getting uppity."
2579. >She nudged you with one of her forelegs
2580. >"Besides, it would be pretty cool to be a bodyguard for the Wonderbolts, wouldn't it?"
2581. >You're god damned right it would be
2582. >That's why you were hyped about in the first place when Rainbow Dash made it sound like you landed one of the coolest careers in Equestria
2583. >On top of that, if Lightning Dust really did get back into the Wonderbolt ranks, you would almost never see her
2584. >However, if you landed this job, it would be the start of the most incredible era of your life
2585. "There's no way you can fulfill two dreams in one day. What's the catch?"
2586. >"I need to know the guy protecting our members can do just that. I want to see you fight."
  2587. >You made a helpless gesture
2588. "Well, unless you got a starved manticore lying around, I'm not sure how we could do that."
2589. >To the side, you heard the voice of Twilight Sparkle
  2590. >"Hey! I could help with that!"
2591. >You completely forgot she was even in the room
2592. >"Anonymous, remember that spell Rainbow Dash had me do to help you train? The one with the magical constructs? That would be the perfect demonstration for Spitfire!"
  2593. >Now we've come full circle
2594. >Just the other day you were seeking out that same training regiment from her before it lead to this, but now with Spitfire here, the pressure was on
  2595. >And you felt it
  2596.
2597. >This had the potential to be the best or worst day of your life
2598. >Even though you have expressed contempt for Spitfire in the past, it was hard to argue that she wasn't the vanguard of your and Dust's future at this very moment
2599. >There's just one small issue
2600. >You were completely unprepared to impress her with any sort of display of aptitude
  2601. >Dust was a different case
2602. >She had been out of the game for a while, sure, but before hand there was nobody in Equestria that could match her
2603. >It would take monumental neglect to bring Lightning Dust down to something the Wonderbolts wouldn't be dying for, and even then her natural ability for flight would probably still give her a chance
2604. >You on the other hand, were a sad excuse for a potential Wonderbolt bodyguard
2605. >Swordsmanship was certainly your strongest area of expertise in the academy, but then again, it would be kind of weird if it wasn't
2606. >Two of the three types of ponies in this world had no reliable way of even holding a weapon
2607. >You were a horrific excuse for a warrior, and after just starting up your training routine with Lightning Dust, you were in no way capable of performing how you needed to
2608. >Ruminating on this fear, you had sort of zoned out
  2609. >You looked to Spitfire
2610. >She was talking to Twilight
2611. >Probably about the logistics of the spell she was talking about
2612. >What it's capable of and all of that
2613. >The part of you infected by your harrowing low self-esteem couldn't help but see Spitfire as patronizing
2614. >Like she knew that you were going to embarrass yourself
2615. >Like she knew you weren't as fit as you should be
  2616. >You maintained your stare
  2617. >They still didn't notice you
2618. >This line of thinking was of course irrational, but it did well enough to stir a fire within you
2619. >Regardless of whether or not she was being genuine, she was right about one thing
  2620. >You had guts
  2621.
2622. >You decided to tune into the conversation they were having
  2623. >Twilight was talking
2624. >"Even Shining Armor used to have a really hard time with it, so it should be perfect in terms of difficulty."
  2625. >Spitfire seemed impressed
2626. >"The captain of the Royal Guard struggled with it, eh? You still down to try it, Anonymous?"
2627. >You guessed Twilight hadn't told her that you had been through it before
  2628. >You nodded
  2629. >"I'm ready."
  2630. >Spitfire held up a hoof
2631. >"Easy tiger, we got ourselves a race to watch first. Come on, let's head outside."
2632. >She made her way to the door before turning back to look at you
2633. >"Here's hoping the two of them haven't killed each other yet."
  2634. >You stifled a shudder
2635. >You got up to follow her when Twilight stopped you
2636. >"Anonymous, are you sure you're up for this? You didn't exactly... do so well the last time you tried this."
  2637. >You laughed
2638. "And I doubt that will change, but I have to try don't I?"
  2639. >She smiled
2640. >"I'm hoping for the best. Who knows, you may do better than you think. I better follow you and Spitfire. I wouldn't wanna miss this for anything!"
2641. >The two of you made your way to the exit, retracing your steps through the winding corridors of the royal halls
2642. >As nervous as you were, you still had to take time to appreciate the beauty of it
2643. >Eventually, you found youself outside once again
2644. >You scanned the skies for Lightning Dust, and without warning she roared down from the clouds to the right of you, her landing deforming the earth
  2645. >You jumped
  2646. "Somebody's excited."
  2647. >This was a correct analysis
2648. >"Of course I'm excited! I've been ready for this since the day after I got kicked out of the academy! I've done nothing but feel sorry for myself since that day and now I have a chance to make all of that stop. I have a chance to be happy again!"
2649. >The small implication that you being with her didn't make her happy, but being a Wonderbolt did stung a little, but you chose to ignore it
2650. >It's probably just that low self-esteem you were thinking about earlier
  2651.
2652. >She must have noticed the look on your face
  2653. >"Oh. I didn't mean it like that, Anonymous!"
  2654. >She giggled
2655. >"Don't worry. You're better than any uniform I could earn."
2656. >She floated up to you and kissed you on the cheek before backing away and brandishing a warm smile
2657. >Her mood immediately dampened as her eyes looked past you
2658. >You bit your bottom lip
2659. >Judging by her expression, you knew exactly who was behind you
2660. >More importantly, you know exactly who just saw you get kissed by Lightning Dust
2661. >With what you hoped was confidence, but was more likely embarrassment, you turned around
2662. >Rainbow Dash was staring into your damn soul
  2663. >She didn't say a word
2664. >If you had to guess, you'd say that if she knew you and Dust were together, this whole scenario would have never happened
2665. >You weren't about to be bullied into making an excuse
  2666. >You said nothing
2667. >Spitfire walked up next to her, noticing her expression
  2668. >She looked to you
2669. >She probably had an idea of what had just transpired, but she maintained her composure
2670. >"The race is simple enough. Five laps around the whole of Ponyville. Just follow the track."
  2671. >Track?
  2672. >You looked up
2673. >A ring of white clouds spun itself around the border of the town
2674. >The way the light of the morning sun danced off the formation was captivating
  2675. >Twilight inquired
2676. >"Wait, when did you do that?"
  2677. >Spitfire turned to her
2678. >"Rainbow Dash and I discussed what the race was going to be before we got here. We thought it'd be easiest to form a nice and simple cloud track to keep the race fair."
2679. >Rainbow completed her answer without removing her gaze from you
2680. >"I made it a little bit ago. While you, Spitfire, and Anonymous were still in the castle. It was easy enough."
2681. >You couldn't have been in there for much longer than fifteen minutes
2682. >Holy shit, she was fast
2683. >You were starting to doubt Dust's chance of even coming close to beating her
2684. >And judging by how angry she must be, you doubted that she was going to show any mercy in favor of a good show
  2685.
  2686. >You are Lightning Dust
2687. >And even when she's not yelling at you, Spitfire is still intimidating
2688. >You were paying attention the best you could, but you couldn't take your eyes off of Rainbow Dash
2689. >She seemed very different now
2690. >She had lost her jovial attitude
2691. >Just half an hour ago she was completely ready to forgive Anon for any transgression
2692. >But suddenly she figures out you and him have a thing, and it's like she's loaded her guns all over again
2693. >You had to admit, after all of this time being second to her, it did feel good to beat her
2694. >Arguably where it matters most
2695. >A moment passed before you cursed yourself for thinking like that
2696. >Anonymous wasn't some object of victory, he was much more than that
2697. >But whether he liked it or not, you were about to thrash Rainbow in this race
2698. >Some retribution was in order
2699. >Dash finally discontinued her staring contest with him and looked at you
2700. >Her magenta eyes narrowed in, highlighting her burning hatred
2701. >You were going to keep your promise to Anonymous
2702. >You were going to remain calm
2703. >But it's time this cunt got the silver medal
  2704. >Spitfire called out
2705. >"The two of you will start here and finish here on the final lap. I'm assuming you can both count to five. It's officially one lap when you're directly above the castle. Got it?"
2706. >You and Rainbow Dash sounded off at the exact same time
  2707. >"Yes ma'am."
2708. >You made your way to the spot Spitfire had designated as the starting line
2709. >Before you completed the meager journey, Anonymous pulled you into a tight hug
2710. >I guess he wasn't scared of Rainbow seeing it anymore
  2711. "Lightning Dust."
2712. >You looked at him, your nerves beginning to crackle
  2713. "Give her hell."
2714. >You smiled at him, fighting back how emotional this moment was for you
  2715. >"I will."
2716. >You took your place beside Rainbow Dash
2717. >Her stare was piercing you
  2718. >You stared back
  2719. >"Get ready, Dust."
  2720. >She grit her teeth
  2721. >"I'm not holding back."
2722. >Your smile widened, the race would be legit after all
  2723. >"I'm counting on it."
  2724.
2725. >You could hear Anonymous talking to Spitfire in a low voice
2726. >It would seem everyone could feel the tension of this situation
2727. >Regardless, Spitfire wasted no time
2728. >"Alright, I'm going to count to three."
  2729. >Anonymous immediately interrupted her
2730. "Wait, are you gonna say 'one, two, three' or 'one, two, three, go'?"
2731. >Spitfire turned to look at him, an eyebrow raised
2732. >"Uh, why does that matter?"
  2733. >He was very serious
  2734. >Damn it, Anon
  2735. "It matters immensely."
2736. >Spitfire didn't seem to share his concern
2737. "You're supposed to go on 'go'. Everybody knows that."
2738. >A wave of validation washed over you
  2739. >He sighed
2740. "Whatever. Just do the countdown thing."
  2741. >She cleared her throat
  2742. >"One."
2743. >You stretched out your wings, and narrowed your eyes
  2744. >You weren't looking at Dash anymore
2745. >There was no time to think about her feelings
  2746. >"Two."
2747. >Your gaze was glued to the white race track above
2748. >Your launch could be everything here
  2749. >"Three."
  2750. >Just believe in yourself
  2751. >"GO!"
2752. >You felt the ground give beneath you with the fury of your leap into the air
2753. >Wind raged passed you, and the colors of the world swept to either side of you in vibrant blurs
2754. >Faster and faster, the world fell beneath you as you breached the skies
2755. >With each flap of your wings you found deeper and deeper reserves of energy
2756. >You forced your mind not to wander, focusing only on the ever-increasing rhythm of your wings
2757. >Eventually, you struck a zone of pure white, and moisture began to collect on your fur
2758. >You took this as a sign to hang left
2759. >Moments after you did so, you broke from the inside of the cloud ring, flying beside it
2760. >The sun was high and shining, and the white, fluffy wall now to your right was little more than a blur as you reduced to a speed possible to maintain for a length of time
2761. >With your wings kept at a slight tilt to compensate for the curve of the race track, you looked to your left
2762. >Rainbow Dash was next to you
2763. >She looked far less strained than you did
  2764.
2765. >you looked down her for an instant to see a brilliant rainbow trail following her flight path
2766. >Turning your head further, you noticed the familiar gold lightning streak behind you, the ever-present proof of your high speeds
2767. >Your eyes made your way back up her and you were met with a cold stare
  2768. >Accompanied by a confident smile
2769. >What was this all about?
2770. >If she really could leave you in the dust, why not do it?
2771. >Did she just want you to see how much better she was than you that badly?
2772. >The very same thoughts you were trying to block the invasion of now ran rampant in your head
2773. >Before you knew it, you had flown over Twilight's castle for the first time, marking the terminus of the first lap
2774. >As if she was waiting for the signal, just as you passed the structure, Rainbow Dash brought her wings to a far greater might, causing her to soar past you
2775. >Your heart skipped a beat with the idea of your dream escaping you right before your eyes before taking things a step further yourself
2776. >You began to wince at the sting of the wind, but pushed past it
2777. >You had to catch up to her
2778. >You had to show her you weren't the loser she claimed you were
  2779. >It's a shame really
2780. >You were actually excited about Rainbow Dash coming to like you only a short time ago
2781. >You could easily believe that in another life, the two of you were the best of friends
2782. >And just as Spitfire said, who know's what the two of you could accomplish if you actually settled your differences
2783. >You really hoped Anonymous wouldn't be the thing that came between all of that
2784. >Still, you couldn't believe the way she was acting right now
  2785. >It made you furious
2786. >It was that same anger that caused you to focus on your acceleration
2787. >Electric energy began to crackle around you
2788. >The distance between you and Rainbow Dash had minimized, but not by a large margin
2789. >You passed over the castle again, concluding lap two
  2790.
  2791. >You looked down
  2792. >All sight was unintelligible
2793. >Now that you took a moment to evaluate your senses, you realized that you couldn't hear anything either
2794. >Long before you reached your current speed, all sound had turned to a monotonous, deafening roar
2795. >You kept your head fixated forward
2796. >You feared that if you turned it even slightly, the wind would catch it and snap your neck
2797. >That being said, the only thing you had to look at was Rainbow Dash
2798. >More importantly, how far ahead Rainbow Dash was
2799. >Your thoughts strayed to that of Anonymous
2800. >And the story he told you
2801. >You don't remember much about the events of his rescue
2802. >Alcohol tends to do that
2803. >But he way he described your descent to catch him...
2804. >What did you call it? "A Sonic Rainboom with a little Lightning Dust flare added to it?"
2805. >You increased your speed, and the wind began to sting
  2806. >Your thoughts strayed again
2807. >Were you really that good under pressure?
  2808. >Were you even good?
  2809. >Or were you lucky?
2810. >Or were you just really, really mad?
  2811. >At Spitfire
  2812. >At Rainbow Dash
  2813. >At the Wonderbolts
  2814. >At the world?
2815. >You spent the better part of your time since the academy drinking and feeling sorry for yourself
2816. >If you took a minute to gaze through your unwavering bravado, your admittedly gross ego, and your self-concerned personality, you'd realize that the only person you were mad at was yourself
2817. >Rainbow Dash now had a glowing white aura about her
2818. >She was really going to fucking do it
  2819. >On a race that didn't matter to her
2820. >She just wanted this to be the biggest blow out she could manage
2821. >A fresh spike of rage thundered within you
2822. >In a moment of admittedly hectic clarity, you realized why you were so mad
  2823. >Why you hated yourself
2824. >Because you knew deep down, you could do better
2825. >That though you failed at the academy, you knew you were meant for more
2826. >Your selfishness, your ignorance got in the way of that
  2827. >Not again
  2828. >Not this time
2829. >This time, would be different
  2830. >You would not falter
  2831. >You would not fail
  2832.
2833. >Narrowing your body as best you could, you pushed your wings to their limits
2834. >They ached in protest, but you pressed on
2835. >Flickering arcs of lightning danced around you as white streaks began to form in front of you before vanishing to either side
2836. >You weren't about to push your limits
2837. >You were about to utterly fucking break them
2838. >Even if it kills you
2839. >A brilliant colorful glow emanated from Rainbow Dash as she finally let go
2840. >The first sound you had heard other than the shearing wind was the ear-shattering boom of Dash's signature technique
2841. >All colors known shot out from her in a dazzling ring as she sped off into the distance, a similar trail following her close behind
  2842. >You closed your eyes
2843. >Your thoughts went out to Anonymous
  2844. >The things he's said to you
  2845. >His belief in you
  2846. >...
  2847. >You heard a sound
2848. >It was a boom, for sure, but it wasn't quite the same
2849. >It was as if lightning had struck directly on top you
  2850. >Your ears were ringing
2851. >You opened your eyes and looked back to find a crackling gold lightning ring coming from where you had just been
2852. >A streak of lightning with intensity rivaling the sun was left in your wake
2853. >The clouds grayed as you passed them, feeding on your own electric energy
2854. >You grinned more and more and more as it dawned on you what was happening
2855. >You weren't sure because of the speed you were going, but you think you had completed the third lap some time ago
  2856. >The fourth wasn't far behind
2857. >You smiled with pride to see that the cloud track remained blackened like a storm
2858. >The fifth lap reached it's end when you realized something
2859. >You were aiming yourself towards the ground to land, and had no idea how to decelerate from such a speed
2860. >You tilted your wings and flapped vigorously to slow your descent
  2861. >This was unfortunate
2862. >You still hurt from the crash the other day
2863. >The last thing that went through your mind was the utter confidence of your victory
  2864.
  2865. >You are Anonymous
2866. >And you were on the border of a psychological meltdown
2867. >This was all a lot to take in, really
2868. >Rainbow Dash stood next to you, completely ignoring your existence
2869. >She stared, watching Lightning Dust complete the final lap
  2870. >She wasn't smiling though
2871. >Sure enough, the golden comet you had been staring at turned here to land
  2872. >Twilight spoke up
  2873. >"She's going a little fast isn't she?"
  2874. >Oh no, not again
2875. >Although you couldn't see it, you could imagine her panic
2876. >The streak slowed dramatically but the end result was inevitable
2877. >You'd wager the damage wouldn't be fatal though
  2878. >Well, you hoped
2879. >Lightning Dust collided with the earth like a falling star
2880. >The energy around her danced off in glowing, electric sparks as she skipped like a pebble across the ground
2881. >She tumbled to a stop, face down in the dirt
  2882. >She was motionless
  2883. "Dust! DUST!"
2884. >You sprinted over to her, collecting her in your arms
2885. >Her eyes opened half way
2886. >She smiled, coughing shortly after
  2887. >"I-I'm fine. I'm fine. Hehe..."
2888. >You looked her up and down
  2889. >She seemed mostly okay
2890. >Her wing might be sprained pretty bad, but nothing that would end her career
  2891. >You fought back tears
2892. "This is... This is pretty similar to the forest thing, huh?"
2893. >She laughed, coughing once more
  2894. >"I uh... I guess so!"
2895. >Spitfire appeared next to you
2896. >She must have noticed that Dust seemed remotely fine, because she didn't seem to care
2897. >Dust removed herself from your care, shakily standing up
  2898. >She looked filthy
2899. >She smiled wide at Spitfire, immensely proud of her assumed victory
2900. >Rainbow Dash stepped out from beside her
2901. >"Pretty good. Not good enough."
  2902. >Dust's face fell dramatically
  2903. >"W-What? How did you-?"
2904. >It was Spitfire who answered
2905. >"That was some impressive stuff Dust, really. But you didn't really think you were going to beat Dash, did you? Shortly after you both Boomed, she lapped you. Twice, actually."
  2906. >The captain's words cut like knives
  2907. >"S-she lapped me?"
  2908. >Rainbow nodded and reiterated
  2909. >"Twice."
  2910.
2911. >Dust's eyes raced from side to side as her mind looked for an explanation
  2912. >"B-but I did the-"
2913. >Dash cut her off, flying close to her
2914. >She maintained a height that had her look down on Lightning Dust
2915. >"The Sonic Rainboom? Or whatever your version of it is?"
  2916. >She laughed
2917. >"I've been doing it waaaaay longer than you have Dusty, you didn't stand a chance!"
2918. >Lightning Dust looked as if she were about to crumble into pieces before Spitfire jumped in, clarifying what she had already stated before
2919. >"Hey, don't feel so bad! I didn't expect you to beat her, remember? Besides, that was absolutely AWESOME! I'm still trying get a grip on it! Do you realize what you even did?! You managed a Sonic... er... whatever! I'd be crazy not to get you back in the academy! Think of the routines we could do with both you and her!"
2920. >Spitfire did her best to reign in her excitement and maintain a professional look
2921. >"Um, that is of course, if you make it through basic training."
2922. >Meanwhile, you did your best to manage your panic attack
2923. >Dust crashing like that got you really worked up
2924. "You see, Dust? You're fine! You get to go back to the academy! It's gonna be okay!"
2925. >Rainbow Dash rolled her eyes
2926. "Oh come on, we don't need her that bad! Besides, having two Sonic Rainbooms kinda ruins the mystique, dontcha think?"
2927. >Lightning Dust, covered in dirt and trace amounts of blood looked to Rainbow Dash
2928. >Behind her sun-colored eyes, you saw something snap
  2929. >Something big
2930. >"What the fuck is wrong with you?"
2931. >The silence that followed her question worried you immensely
2932. >If Dust was about to screw up her second chance, you may just kill her
2933. >With no immediate answer, she asked again
2934. >"No seriously, what the fuck is wrong with you? What did I ever do to you? I put your friends in danger, yeah, but that was on ACCIDENT! I know I was being reckless, but I still didn't do it intentionally!"
  2935. >She was yelling now
  2936.
2937. >"And then I got kicked out because you convinced Spitfire to give me the boot. You won. You could have stopped there, but you didn't! Even though I've tried to be better, even though I've done nothing wrong to you since then, you still don't like me! You were all smiles a while ago but ever since Anon and Spitfire came out here, you've been horrible!"
  2938. >Now she was screaming
2939. >"Combine that with your enormous fucking ego and you are nothing but a completely insufferable bitch around me! AROUND ANYONE! And nobody is willing to call you out on your bullshit because you've saved Equestria so many times or because you're such a good fucking flier."
2940. >She looked at Spitfire with great disdain as she finished her sentence
  2941. >She stomped her hoof
2942. >"Well, I'M calling you out! I'M telling you that despite your accomplishments you're a miserable person inside! And that's all that matters!"
2943. >She closed her eyes before they shot open once more with pure fury behind them as she shouted her final piece
2944. >"AND MAYBE IF YOU TOOK A FUCKING MOMENT TO REALIZE THAT, YOU'D REALIZE WHY ANONYMOUS CHOSE ME INSTEAD!"
2945. >You weren't sure if you'd ever seen Rainbow speechless before
  2946. >She was always so hot-headed
2947. >But here she was, staring at Dust
  2948. >Completely quiet
2949. >While everybody had noticed you and Dust were together, Dust was the first to really bring it out in the open
2950. >You could see the weight of her words on Rainbow's soul
2951. >The stunned silence gave you an opportunity to appreciate another rare sight
2952. >Spitfire, a drill sergeant, had nothing to say either
2953. >Hell, if you didn't know any better, you'd say she felt shame
  2954. >Dust continued
2955. >She wasn't yelling anymore, but she still wasn't happy
  2956. >"I can't win. You'll always hate me, and you're the favorite."
2957. >She looked over at Spitfire
2958. >"I take back nothing I said to your star student, and I'm not sorry. So keep me in the academy, or don't."
  2959. >She was deadly serious
  2960. >"Because I don't give a shit."
  2961.
2962. >It was at this moment that you realized that Lightning Dust never knowing when to stop was one of her defining traits
  2963. >She had guts
2964. >It was probably what you liked most about her, really
2965. >She was never one to compromise
2966. >That being said, she must have been in a terrible place mentally when you found her at the bar
2967. >Dust is currently telling Rainbow Dash, the Element of Loyalty, and Spitfire, the captain of the Wonderbolts, that they're full of shit
2968. >Despite that, she was still in a spiraling depression when you met her
2969. >But there was a reason this was all so admirable
2970. >Spitfire and Dash are like any other ponies, they can make mistakes
2971. >They can even screw up pretty bad from time to time
2972. >The difference is that their positions gives them social immunity that others don't normally get
  2973. >Dust didn't seem to care though
2974. >And while right now, you wanted to strangle her until her eyes rolled to the back of her head, you had to give her credit
2975. >She was telling it like it is
2976. >Well, someone had to tell them
  2977. >Spitfire stared her down
2978. >She knew Dust was right
  2979. >At least, to a degree
2980. >The words probably even stung a little
2981. >A drop of rain hit the ground to your left
2982. >a few more followed shortly after
2983. >You looked up, noticing that the cloud ring that made their race track was still blackened from Lightning Dust's earlier Boom.
2984. >The clouds began to drift from their circle formation, carrying light showers of rain within them
2985. >Rainbow Dash turned to you
2986. >She blinked, her eyes shimmering with tears
  2987. >"I-I just..."
  2988. >Spitfire turned to her
2989. >She kept her poker face
2990. >Her voice broke as she began to sob
2991. >"I DON'T GET IT! Why are you with her, Anon?! I- I thought that you... after all I've done for you..."
2992. >You felt a crack run down your heart
2993. >You felt like a massive piece of shit
2994. >"You've known her for what, three days? Four days? What the fuck is wrong with you?!"
2995. >She sat on the ground
  2996. >"What's wrong with me?"
  2997.
  2998. >Well shit
2999. >I guess that confirms your worst fear
3000. >You couldn't help but feel bad for Spitfire
3001. >Poor girl was dealing with an incredibly over dramatic romance plot
3002. >Rainbow Dash's question echoed multiple times in your head
  3003. >That's just the issue
3004. >There was nothing wrong with her
3005. >Well, she was kind of a bitch, but you could easily argue Dust was similar
3006. >What kind of excuse is that?
3007. >How do you tell someone that they're just not good enough for no discernible reason?
3008. >If you had to guess, it's that you just related to Dust more
3009. >Finding her as low as she was helped you drag yourself out of your own stagnation
3010. >Rainbow always seemed untouchable, so out of the realm of possibility
3011. >She was the best flier in the world, and on top of that she represented an Element of Harmony, a title that has carried her to the defeat of many villains
  3012. >Dust didn't have any of that
3013. >She had only her grit to push her
3014. >You didn't fault Rainbow Dash for this, but it certainly always made you feel like you were mooching off of her or living in her shadow
3015. >It didn't help that she was immensely proud of all of that
  3016. >You didn't know what to say
3017. "Dash... I'm sorry. I can't change how I feel about her. You know it doesn't work like that."
  3018. >She sniffled
  3019. >"I-I know."
3020. "You can't take that out on Dust. What happened in your past with her is over, and she's trying to make amends. She suffers because of her actions at the academy every day. For crying out loud, she was borderline an alcoholic when I met her. Isn't all of that enough?"
  3021. >She was quiet
3022. >Lightning Dust seemed slightly offended but let you continue
3023. "Being mad at Lightning Dust won't change anything. If you want to be mad at anyone, be mad at me, but you did a great thing bringing Spitfire here to reconsider Dust for the Wonderbolts. Don't screw it up now. Do the right thing."
3024. >You knelt down in front of her, offering your hand
3025. "I know it hurts. But you have to trust that life will inch along and get better. It always does."
  3026.
3027. >Rainbow Dash finally managed to look up at you
3028. >Slowly but surely, you could see the faint signs of regret on her
  3029. >She smiled
  3030. >"I..."
  3031. >She choked up
3032. >"I can't change how I feel about you either."
  3033. >You nodded
3034. >You'd be stupid to expect anything else
  3035. >"Are you happy?"
3036. >You looked back at Dust
3037. >A few more drops of rain begin to hit the ground
3038. >She smiled at you, and much to your surprise, she wasn't overly enjoying Rainbow's low moment
3039. "Yes, Rainbow. I am. But don't think any of this is lost on me. I wouldn't have any of this if it wasn't for you. I wouldn't have even met Dust if you didn't hype up that shitty job with the Wonderbolts."
3040. >You managed to get a chuckle out of Spitfire
3041. "I can't thank you enough for the kindness you've shown me. Or should I say loyalty?"
3042. >She wiped her eyes, laughing lightly
3043. >You stood up, and moved to the side
3044. "The two of you need to move on from this. No more bickering, no more fighting. Enough is enough."
3045. >Dust looked towards the ground, a small amount of shame beginning to form within her for her earlier words
3046. >With what you can only assume was a titanic amount of willpower, she spoke
  3047. >"I'm sorry, Rainbow Dash."
  3048. >Even you were surprised
3049. >Not only was this Lightning Dust, she had just got done saying that she wouldn't apologize
  3050. >Dash shared your shock
3051. >Every one of your muscles tensed as you waited for her response
  3052. >She sighed
3053. >"I'm sorry too, Lightning Dust."
3054. >You felt like there should have been something more
3055. >A speech of friendship from Twilight
3056. >A long monologue about how they were wrong
3057. >A sappy "Oh, we're friends now!" moment
  3058. >Anything
3059. >But in the silence of the two apologies you came to a realization
3060. >Or at least a slight paradigm shift
3061. >Life wasn't an episodic adventure filled with heroic comebacks, cheesy lessons in morality, or even something as simple as confident apologies
3062. >Life was just a road of horrifically uncertain events
3063. >And all anyone did was stumble down it
  3064.
3065. >No matter how sure anyone was of anything, no matter how perfect or confident anyone seemed, everyone was uncertain
  3066. >Everyone stumbled
  3067. >Everyone fell
3068. >What separated anyone from anybody was how often you got back up
3069. >How often you decided to keep stumbling
  3070. >You were satisfied
3071. >Something about the awkward vulnerability of the situation felt humble
  3072. >It felt real
  3073. >There was no spectacle
  3074. >Just two stupid mares
  3075. >Lightning Dust shifted uncomfortably
3076. >"I just think we... got off on the wrong hoof."
  3077. >She smiled reassuringly
3078. >"I think the fact that we can keep up with each other alone is reason enough for us to be friends."
3079. >Rainbow was having a hard time adjusting, but she managed a grin as well
3080. >"I wouldn't say you can keep up! Give it time though. The Sonic Rainboom was a good first step."
  3081. >She winked
  3082. >Spitfire breathed a sigh of relief
3083. >"Tell me this nonsense between you two is over. You both have a real chance of taking the Wonderbolts to heights they've never reached. Are you ready to make history?"
3084. >Dust and Dash exchanged looks
3085. >Lightning Dust flapped her wings excitedly
3086. >"We're ready for anything you can throw at us!"
  3087. >Spitfire smirked
3088. >"Then consider this your admission into the Wonderbolt Academy, Lightning Dust. I wasn't kidding when I said I was going to make it hell for you though."
3089. >Rainbow Dash echoed her sentiment
  3090. >"You've earned it."
3091. >Only a moment later, Dust lost her composure
3092. >Whatever tough girl act she had been pulling to seem intimidating to Spitfire and Dash had completely left her
3093. >She flew upward, turning sharply around midair before colliding into you
3094. >You saw it coming, so she didn't knock you down this time around
3095. >You wrapped your arms around her
3096. >Her voice was muffled and tinged with sobs, so it was incredibly hard to understand her
3097. >You got the last bit though
3098. >"We did it! We did it! WE DID IT! WE DID IT!"
3099. >You pulled her in tightly
  3100. "You did it."
3101. >The rain began to pour
  3102.
3103. >Twilight Sparkle, who had stood on the sidelines until now, finally spoke
3104. >"This is amazing and all, but can we please go inside?!"
3105. >Without much second thought, Spitfire, Rainbow, and the princess made their way indoors
3106. >You and Dust decided to stay behind for a moment
3107. >The two of you still held to your embrace
3108. >Dust flipped her now wet mane out of her face
  3109. >She giggled
  3110. >"Anonymous, we're gonna be soaked!"
  3111. "Who cares?"
3112. >You pulled her in for a kiss
3113. >To your surprise, Dust met you with eagerness
3114. >You guessed she had felt that the atmosphere was nice too
3115. >She pulled away for a moment and looked at her surroundings
  3116. >Your gaze followed hers
3117. >It was raining only in a small radius of here
3118. >The rest of the sky was a brilliant sunny day
3119. >The rare collision of sunlight and rainfall made for a dazzling display
3120. >You looked back down at her
3121. >You could see fresh tears on her face before the rain swept them away
3122. >"I love you so much, Anonymous."
3123. >You kissed her again, making sure to return the sentiment once the contact ceased
3124. "I love you too, Dust."
  3125. >You laughed
  3126. >"Let's get inside."
3127. >She nodded, reluctantly pulling herself from your arms before flying to the entrance of the castle
3128. >You were running close behind
3129. >You finally made it to the main hall, albeit several seconds after Lightning Dust
3130. >You were noticeably more winded than she was
3131. >You did your best to conceal it
3132. >Twilight and Rainbow Dash seemed confused as to why it took the two of you so long to get in here
  3133. >Spitfire, however, wore a sly smile
3134. >Whether it was to make a point or deflect any questions that may come your way, Spitfire began to speak
3135. >"As much as I hate to cut any celebrations short, we're not done just yet!"
  3136. >She seemed excited, actually
3137. >"Oh no, in fact, we're only at half time!"
3138. >Rainbow didn't understand, and Dust seemed worried
  3139. >Spitfire assured her
3140. >"Don't worry, Lightning Dust you're off the stage now. Him however..."
  3141. >She pointed to you
  3142. >Fuck, you totally forgot
  3143. >"He's up next!"
  3144.
3145. >Twilight clapped her hooves together
3146. >"Oh this is so exciting! Meet me in the library, when you're ready Anon. I need to go prepare the spell!"
3147. >Dust turned to you quickly
3148. >"Spell? What is she talking about, Anonymous? What's happening?"
3149. >Spitfire brought her and Dash up to speed
3150. >As her explanation went on and Dust's face fell to greater worry, you began to become nervous yourself
3151. >She finished and Lightning Dust immediately flew up to your level
3152. >"Are you fucking insane?! You're going to fight simulated magical monsters that even the captain of the royal fucking guard had trouble with?! The same guy who's so awesome he fathered an alicorn?!"
  3153. >She really wasn't helping your composure
3154. "Well uh... when you put it like that it sounds a little stupid."
3155. >Her eyes blazed with anger
3156. >"That's because it is very, very stupid!"
3157. >Rainbow Dash flew over now
3158. >"Are you kidding? This is going to be AWESOME! Anonymous versus the minions of Tartarus!"
3159. >She began jabbing at mock opponents in the air
3160. >"I can't wait! You're gonna kick some serious ass, Anon!"
  3161. >That was highly unlikely
3162. >If you picked any guard up off the streets, it was likely that they could do a better job than you
3163. >Dust seemed to agree with your train of thought
3164. >But you weren't about to back out now
3165. >You may not get another opportunity like this
3166. "Hey, have a little faith, okay? I believed in you! This is a dual effort, remember?"
3167. >You could tell that she wanted to protest that this was very different
  3168. >And she was right
3169. >"I'm worried, Anonymous. What if you get really hurt?"
  3170. >Rainbow chimed in
3171. >"Oh he TOTALLY will. You should have seen him the last time he tried this!"
  3172. >Dust glared at her
3173. "It would be pretty sweet if I get to work so close to you though, right?"
3174. >She had to admit it
3175. >"It would be great... We could hang out immediately after each show once I become a Wonderbolt!"
  3176. >Rainbow shrugged
3177. >"Well, there's a lengthy tear-down process after each show but yeah, basically!"
  3178.
  3179. >Lightning Dust sighed
3180. >"Are you sure you want to do this? Now, of all times?"
3181. >You knew she was right, but you had thought this over enough
3182. >Time to let instinct kick in
3183. "Yes, I'm sure. Now let's go, we wouldn't want to keep Twilight waiting."
3184. >Spitfire seemed happy that you didn't back out
3185. >It bothered you how excited she was to see you get thrashed by holographic monsters
3186. >You followed what you could remember of the path to the library
  3187. >You hadn't said a word to anyone
3188. >As the time to act neared, you found yourself getting more and more nervous
3189. >You rubbed your side, remembering where you took a particularly nasty blow from a minotaur the last time you tried this
3190. >It was weeks before you could take a deep breath without hurting
3191. >And unfortunately, you weren't much different in skill now compared to yourself back then
3192. >Lightning Dust must have caught on to how you were feeling
3193. >"Ya know, it will at least be cool to see you fight."
3194. >You rubbed the back of your head
3195. "Um... well... It's not going to be that impressive."
  3196. >She laughed
3197. >"Give yourself SOME credit! Was it really that bad last time?"
  3198. >Rainbow Dash answered
3199. >"Oh yeah! Dude got knocked around like crazy! I'm surprised he lived!"
3200. >She blushed and smiled nervously after she realized what she had said
3201. >You and Lightning Dust said nothing, but the two of you were very uncomfortable
3202. >Eventually, you entered the library to find a mass of glowing purple energy in the center of the room
3203. >Occasionally arcs of energy would spring from it, striking at nearby objects harmlessly or simply turning back to the source, forming an arch before fading away
3204. >Twilight wiped a small bead of sweat from her brow before turning to you, smiling wide
3205. >"Everything's ready when you are, Anon!"
3206. >Lightning Dust put a hoof to her face
3207. >"This is too much stress for one day."
  3208. >You nodded, agreeing emphatically
  3209.
3210. >Spitfire made her way to the edge of the room
3211. >"I want to be clear: we aren't going to stop the spell unless you say so or seem unable to say so. I want to really see what you can do. You got that, Anon?"
  3212. >You nodded
3213. >Twilight gestured to the side of the room where Spitfire was standing
3214. >"Lightning Dust, Rainbow Dash, could you please stick to the edge of the room? We wouldn't want anything interfering."
3215. >Oh yeah, we wouldn't want anyone else getting sheared in half by a dragon
3216. >Twilight looked to you now
3217. >"I promise you won't be mortally wounded, Anon, but are you still one-hundred percent sure you want to do this?"
3218. >You hesitated, but you nodded once again
3219. >"Do you have any last requests before we get started?"
3220. >You thought for a minute before your eyes went wide
3221. >"My helmet! I left it last time we did this and I never came back to get it. Is it still here?"
  3222. >Twilight perked up
  3223. >"Oh, yes! It's right here."
3224. >She floated over a steel helmet and dropped it into your hands
  3225. >You looked it over
3226. >It had lost most of it's shine
3227. >This thing was probably one of a kind
3228. >To your knowledge, there wasn't another human in Equestria, so there more than likely wasn't anything similar to it
3229. >While wearing it made you feel really cool, it seldom had it's uses for the average job
3230. >It had a movable visor that served to cover your entire head with metal, and that just wasn't practical for normal guard duty
3231. >However, you were sure it would have many uses when deflecting a full on assault from various random creatures
3232. >You placed it over your head
  3233. "I'm ready."
3234. >You took a deep breath, and looked over to Lightning Dust
3235. >She was worried, but she was smiling
3236. >You looked over to Rainbow Dash, who was more vocal
  3237. >"KICK SOME ASS, ANON!"
3238. >At your word, the violet orb began to crackle with greater intensity as Twilight began the first part of the summoning process
3239. >You drew your sword and brought down the visor on your helmet
  3240. >Well, here goes nothing
  3241.
3242. >Twilight shot a beam of magic into the center of the orb, causing it to crackle and shimmer
3243. >"We'll start with the simple stuff!"
  3244. >You gulped
3245. >Three smaller arcane orbs floated out of the central one before coalescing into something reminiscent of anything you knew
3246. >Their forms elongated, with claws and teeth sprouting from appendages that started to mold
  3247. >Timberwolves
  3248. >Hopefully this wouldn't be so bad
3249. >You felt like they were a lot bigger than you remember them being in real life
3250. >They came to their artificial existence one by one
3251. >The first glowing, purple wolf to spring to life was the one closest to you
3252. >It's solid eyes shined in different areas as it searched its surroundings before locking its gaze onto you
3253. >With a vicious growl, it moved its legs rapidly, making it's way across the large library with intimidating speed
3254. >Only now did you realize you didn't have a shield
3255. >What the fuck were you thinking?
3256. >An empty hand is a useless hand!
3257. >Your train of thought was cut brutally short as the first wolf leapt at you
3258. >With relative ease, you stepped to the side and brought your blade down in an overhead arc for a decapitation
3259. >Your sword passed through the neck of the construct, creating a rift between its head and and body with a satisfying hum
3260. >The body continued forward, crashing into the ground before turning to arcane sparks, causing the creature to fizzle out of existence
3261. >You could feel your rocketing heart rate
3262. >You began to wonder if you had any amount of PTSD from the other times you did this, because it had been horrifying
3263. >Unfortunately, the shock over your dance with death had let your guard down
3264. >You were tossed onto your back as the second wolf tackled you to the ground
3265. >It's jaws wrapped around your left arm
3266. >Magic or not, you felt the teeth sink into your flesh
3267. >You felt it tear as it thrashed its head back and forth
3268. >You felt the leather parts of your armor soak with blood
3269. >And you felt the pain
  3270.
3271. >You cried out in agony
  3272. >The feeling was excruciating
  3273. >You heard someone shout
3274. >It was hard to tell who it was, but they sounded very worried
3275. >Your sword had been knocked from your grip, clattering somewhere off to the side
3276. >Your vision began to fade
3277. >Out of the corner of your eye, you saw the third wolf running up to join its friend in ripping you apart
3278. >You forced yourself awake, concentrating on the pain for a rush of adrenaline
3279. >You kicked your right leg, your boot colliding with the nose of the third wolf
3280. >The crack of bark confirmed that damage had been done, and the beast recoiled in simulated pain
3281. >You took this opportunity to attempt to free your arm from the jaws of the other timberwolf
3282. >With strength you didn't know you hard, your gloved hand grabbed the face of the beast
3283. >You shouted as you gripped with all your might, pressing your thumb through its eye
3284. >You felt the rest of your fingers break through the wood in tandem on the other side of its head
3285. >You ripped your hand away, taking a large portion of the creature's head with you
3286. >In a fairly barbaric display, you used the chunk you had taken off as a blunt object with which to bash the rest of the creatures head apart
3287. >It wasn't until it dissolved into arcane dust that it finally let go of your arm
  3288. >You didn't let yourself get comfortable
3289. >Only moments after you destroyed the second wolf, the third had recovered enough to leap at you
3290. >With little time to think of any consequences, you ducked and charged
3291. >Your body collided with the final wolf, bringing it to the ground
3292. >It's jaws snapped at you in protest
3293. >Your left hand forced its head to the floor as your right balled into a fist
3294. >You felt the claws of the creature dig into your back as punch after punch collided with it's head
3295. >The bark wavered and caved under your assault, with the struggle of the wolf weakening further and further until it too faded away, marking the end of this portion of the fight
  3296.
3297. >You immediately fell to one knee, lifting up your visor to get a good look at your arm
3298. >The teeth made it through the armor, but not deep enough to render your arm completely useless
3299. >It hurt immensely each time your muscles flexed, but you were by no means crippled
3300. >It was very likely though that this would become a problem as the fight went on
3301. >You tried not to think about it
  3302. >"Anonymous!"
3303. >You looked over to the direction of the voice and you saw a piece of metal being hurled at you
3304. >With barely enough reaction time, you caught it with your good hand
  3305. >It was a plain iron shield
3306. >You looked up to see Rainbow Dash smiling wide
3307. "Where did you even get this?"
3308. >The purple orb began to crackle again
3309. >It was much louder this time
3310. >"It was just laying around, man! You probably left it here last time!"
  3311. >Twilight turned to her
  3312. >"Hey! That's one of Shining Arm-"
3313. >A single orb was produced from the central one with a thunderous sound
3314. >It began to static as it mutated into a creature much bigger than yourself
  3315. >Something resembling a lion's body began to form
3316. >You scrambled to place the shield on your arm
3317. "Are you serious?! I was just joking about the manticore!"
  3318. >Twilight began to panic
3319. >"I-It's randomly generated, Anon! I don't have control over what it makes! I can shut it down, though!"
3320. >You watched the wings on the beast form shortly after its claws and mighty tail
3321. >It was an unbelievably tempting offer
3322. >You looked over to Spitfire
3323. >Although she was looking back at you, you couldn't read her expression at all
3324. >She waited patiently for your decision
  3325. "No. Keep going."
3326. >With a nod of your head, you brought the visor back down over your face
3327. >You gripped your sword and newfound shield tightly
3328. >The manticore came to life, roaring loud enough to make everyone cover their ears
3329. >With considerable rage, the creature charged towards you, clawing apart the floor with each stride
3330. >Holy fuck, this was terrifying
  3331.
3332. >Forgetting your fortitude for a moment, you ran to the side, jumping into a roll that allowed you to just barely escape the monster's strike
3333. >His charge continued, slamming him into one of Twilight's bookcases
3334. >The shelves were shattered on impact, and several books must have been ruined
3335. >Twilight really didn't think this one out
3336. >The manticore turned to you, letting out another bone-chilling roar
3337. >Surveying the room for a place to move, you realized that, while large, the library wasn't nearly spacious enough for an enraged manticore
3338. >At this point, they could do little to blame you in the case of collateral damage
3339. >You sprinted for the door
3340. >Lightning Dust shouted after you
3341. >"Anon, where are you going?! Do you want us to stop the spell?"
3342. >Before meeting the doorway, you turned back and called to her
3343. "Not running! Tactical retreat! Keep it going!"
3344. >You weren't sure whether or not that they were okay with the idea, but you didn't take the time to listen
3345. >You focused all of your adrenaline on your legs carrying you as best they could
3346. >And with the floor rumbling close behind you, there was plenty of adrenaline to go around
3347. >You skid into a tight turn, taking you down the hallway to the exit of the castle
3348. >About halfway down, you heard the manticore take a mighty leap into the air with its wings
3349. >Shortly thereafter, it landed directly in your path, its right paw brought back for a swipe
3350. >With what felt like nanoseconds to spare, you brought up your shield
3351. >The beast's claws hooked around the rim, carrying you as it finished its path
3352. >Unable to remove your shield, the creature brought you through the air, flinging you into another branching hallway
3353. >To your surprise, you rolled only once when you hit the ground before finding your footing
  3354. >Hm
3355. >Maybe you were more dexterous than you thought!
  3356.
3357. >However, the cramped hallway was a far less advantageous battleground than the library, and your two options were to head straight into the manticore, or to turn around and book it to an unknown area
3358. >The decision was simple enough
3359. >You whirled around and continued your hellish sprint towards your assumed salvation
3360. >As the hallway slowly reached its terminus, you realized where you were headed
3361. >The door on the far end was open slightly, and through it you could see the large balcony that accompanied the far end of the Castle of Friendship
3362. >It was less than ideal, but you had little choice
3363. >At one point you passed an open doorway to your left
3364. >There was a pink pony in there, but you didn't seem to recognize her
3365. >Her violet mane whirled around at the noise of a rampaging monster through the halls
  3366. >"What the-?!"
3367. >You waved before passing her swiftly
  3368. "Good morning!"
3369. >You saw only a glimpse of her immense confusion before she was out of your sight completely
3370. >Maybe that was Twilight's student you had heard so much about
  3371. >What was her name?
  3372. >Sunset Glimmer?
  3373. >Something like that
3374. >Just as you were about to give out from exhaustion, you manged to squeeze your way through the door to the balcony
3375. >You abruptly stopped as you took in the menacing drop below
3376. >It was hard to tell if it would be fatal or not
3377. >A loud crash erupted behind you
3378. >The manticore had not been able to fit through the door, so it decided to make some adjustments
3379. >Shards of wood and crystal showered onto the balcony before you
3380. >This was really getting out of hand
3381. >It stamped it's paws a few times before letting out another roar
  3382. >Well
  3383. >This was it
3384. >You assumed a defensive stance as it charged towards you once again
3385. >Its maw opened wide for a bite once it was only a few yards in front of you
3386. >With little choice, you brought up your shield, readying your sword for a counterattack
  3387.
3388. >You did your best not to wince as the jaws of the creature closed on you
3389. >You adjusted your shield accordingly, causing the manticore to wrap it's mouth around your shield
3390. >You heard the creak of bending iron as it's applied greater and greater pressure
3391. >It was mere moments away from biting your arm off
3392. >With what strength you could muster, you lifted your shield arm so that the beast's head would follow
3393. >You only managed to move it a few inches
  3394. >Good enough
3395. >With your sword arm, you slashed at the manticore's neck
3396. >It was hard to tell what damage you were doing considering it was a magical construct, but the reaction it got was enough to inspire some form of morale in you
3397. >Your blade cut across the creature, the familiar static hum ringing out once more
3398. >It released its hold on your shield, backing up as it roared in pain
  3399. >Or rage
  3400. >Probably both
  3401. >This was your moment
3402. >You had it on the back foot, you couldn't stop now!
3403. >Letting out what you considered a meager war cry, you charged towards the monster
3404. >You rolled forward, dodging a swipe from it's massive tail
3405. >You came out of the maneuver with an overhead slash
3406. >Your blade connected with its back leg, creating a rift where the mock flesh was shortly beforehand
  3407. >You didn't let up
3408. >Knowing the manticore would turn violently to face you, you swung your shield to meet him
3409. >As the construct turned, your plan came to fruition as the surface of your shield collided with its head
3410. >An arcane tooth flung loose
3411. >It's eyes lost focus as it attempted to recover from the bash
3412. >Feeling the victory rush, you swung your sword towards the dazed creature's head
3413. >Unfortunately, you did so as it's paw came around for it's own strike
3414. >It swept across your body, carrying you several yards away
3415. >Your armor split open with ease, and a crimson font of blood flew into the air before spattering onto the ground along with your motionless body
  3416.
3417. >All of your senses were dulled
3418. >Miraculously, you found the ability to get onto your hands and knees
3419. >Your vision faded in and out from black
3420. >You heard a lot of noises around you, but they reached your ears muffled and distorted
3421. >You think someone was screaming your name, but it was hard to tell
3422. >You now noticed the blood pooling on the floor as you held this position
3423. >Looking down, your eyes met three large gashes across your chest and abdomen
3424. >The deeper cut was on your chest, with the wounds becoming more shallow as they went down your body
3425. >Probably for the best, you liked your guts best when they remained in your body
3426. >A muted vibration rung out across the balcony
3427. >You could see your blood ripple on the floor
3428. >Turning your head, you noticed the manticore roaring once more as it prepared itself to charge you
  3429. >And kill you
3430. >You felt like if there were ever a time for the spell to stop it should be now
3431. >Each passing second continued to confirm the continuation of the creature's existence
3432. >Your gaze fell back to the red pool of blood
  3433. >You were fairly disappointed
3434. >Granted, you had done better in this run of the simulation spell than ever before, but you couldn't shake the embarrassment
3435. >You wanted nothing more than to make yourself proud
3436. >To make Lightning Dust proud
3437. >You were not as talented as her by any stretch of the imagination, but if you were going to die here, then you were going to at least stick to your own advice
3438. >You had to keep trying
3439. >It felt as if gravity had increased its hold on you by an immense multiplier, but you stood up
3440. >You dragged your sword across the floor as you brought yourself to your full height
3441. >You feebly readied your shield
3442. >Looking to your right, you saw the group catching up to you down the hallway
3443. >Lightning Dust took flight to come help you
3444. >They must have just seen you get thrown around
  3445.
3446. >It was unlikely there was anything they could do to help you though
3447. >The manticore was currently blocking the doorway with its form, and you had a feeling that if Twilight could shut off the spell, she would
3448. >Then again, there shouldn't be any reason that she couldn't turn it off
  3449. >Right?
3450. >Maybe Spitfire was insisting that she doesn't
  3451. >There's a lot of variables
3452. >Regardless, you had a life to fight for
3453. >The manticore began its charge
3454. >You always heard that your life was supposed to flash before your eyes in the moments before death
  3455. >You didn't get any of that
  3456. >Just terror, mostly
3457. >You let out a scream as you ran forward, the gashes in your chest tearing just a bit further with each stride
  3458. >You discarded your shield
3459. >It hadn't done you much good anyway
3460. >You gripped your sword with both hands, your last thoughts going out to Lightning Dust as you swept in a mighty arc
3461. >Your sword struck across the creature's face, and using the momentum of the first swing, you turned the sword back towards your enemy and brought it downward
3462. >It embedded itself diagonally in what would be its skull
3463. >It thrashed about in pain, turning violently
3464. >In doing so, the scorpion tail of the beast collided with you, sending you flying once more across the balcony
3465. >Your eyes widened as the floor disappeared beneath you, giving way to the grass below
3466. >Time seemed to slow down
3467. >You looked forward to the manticore
3468. >It fell to the ground, dissipating into arcane residue
  3469. >You did it
  3470. >You actually did it
3471. >The group was filling out the balcony now
3472. >You could see Lightning Dust scream in protest of your fate
3473. >You imagined there was little she could do now
3474. >It's possible you could have survived this fall normally
  3475. >But wounded like this?
  3476. >It was unlikely
  3477. >But who cares?
3478. >Lightning Dust had her future ahead of her
3479. >And you proved to yourself, once and for all, that you're worth more than a job counting tickets
  3480. >You suddenly weren't so disappointed
  3481. >You are Anonymous
3482. >And you can die happy with that
  3483.
3484. >You stared at the balcony
3485. >It was above you now
3486. >As it drifted further and further away from you, you knew that the ground was close behind
3487. >Still no Lightning Dust to save you
3488. >You guessed this was death getting back at you for cheating your last fall
3489. >You noticed it was about noon
3490. >The sun was high in the sky
3491. >And directly in your face
3492. >An unfortunate discomfort before you die
3493. >As you marveled at how something so far away could be so bright, the silhouette of a pegasus with their wings spread moved in front of the sun before turning into a steep dive towards you
3494. >Surprisingly, two more pegasi showed up behind the first
3495. >Lightning Dust's figure came into view as the front runner
3496. >You appreciated the sentiment, but you felt like it was a little late
3497. >And judging by the fact that the other two pegasi, who you could now identify as Spitfire and Rainbow Dash, abruptly stopped their descent, you were very close to the ground
  3498. >It wasn't a very long fall, after all
  3499. >Lightning Dust didn't seem deterred
  3500. >You found yourself smiling
3501. >It seemed poetic that this was happening again
3502. >As both your futures hung in the balance
3503. >Lightning Dust closed the distance, inches away from you
3504. >She wasn't drunk this time, so it seemed far easier for her to gain control of you once she grabbed you
3505. >There was another crucial difference though
3506. >She didn't have the distance to do anything with that control
3507. >What could have been a valiant rescue attempt turned into a desperate hug, one that showed her desperation for you to live
3508. >She flapped her wings as much as she could to dampen your fall in the second you had before landing
3509. >Surprisingly you seemed to slow a reasonable amount
3510. >You hugged her back as you met the earth below
3511. >Consigning herself to your fate, Dust tumbled with you as the force of your fall dispersed
3512. >You felt various parts of your body give and crack as you rolled
  3513.
3514. >You had not fallen incredibly far, so your bodies came to a stop fairly quickly
3515. >Amazingly, your vision had not gone to black
  3516. >You were still conscious
3517. >And you were not dead
3518. >But as the adrenaline of the battle wore off, you realized you were in a colossal amount of pain
3519. >You had no doubt in your mind that Lightning Dust had taken a beating of her own
3520. >You relinquished your grip on her gently to look at her
3521. >Her eyes looked up to you
  3522. >"Anonymous?"
3523. >You placed your forehead against hers
  3524. "I'm here, Dust. I'm here."
3525. >She buried her face into your chest once more
3526. >"I- I thought you were going to- I was so-"
3527. >You stroked her mane, shushing her
3528. "I'm okay. Don't think about all of that."
  3529. >Were you okay?
3530. >You took mental stock of yourself
3531. >You were pretty sure you had broken a couple of ribs
  3532. >Maybe a leg?
3533. >Your right arm was numb, so who knows what was going on there
3534. >A thought just struck you
  3535. "Dust?"
3536. >She looked up at you
3537. >"Why didn't the simulation stop after I got my chest clawed open?"
3538. >Lightning Dust winced as she tried to form a sentence
3539. >She also seemed very reluctant to answer
  3540. >"I... well..."
  3541. >You waited
3542. >"I believed that you could still do it. I told Twilight to keep it going."
3543. >You weren't sure you heard that correctly
3544. >"I- I'm sorry! We were trying to catch up with you when we saw you get hurt like that, but I knew you could do it, Anon. I just knew it!"
3545. >She released herself from your grip
3546. >"With the way you talk to me, with the way you keep me going, I just knew you had it in you. I knew you wouldn't give up."
  3547. >She wiped her eyes
3548. >"I wasn't so confident when you went over the edge of the balcony. I knew it was all my fault..."
3549. >You touched a hand to your wound, studying the blood
3550. >"...I'm sorry Anonymous! It was stupid! I- I almost got you killed! P-please don't-"
  3551. >You chuckled
3552. >She was still a reckless little shit
3553. "You're fine, Dust. Just quit your crying"
3554. >You let your head slump back to the ground
3555. "It was pretty cool, wasn't it?"
  3556.
3557. >Lightning Dust seemed to be at a loss for words
3558. >"Pretty cool?! You almost died and that's all you have to say is that it was pretty cool?! Ya know, sometimes-"
3559. >She trailed off as she felt a fresh wave of tears coming on
  3560. >"I'm just glad you're okay."
3561. >She gripped you in a hug once more
3562. >You could see her coat stain with your blood from the embrace
3563. >You studied your wound as you pulled her away
3564. >Now that you had a chance to look at it, you realized it wouldn't be fatal
3565. >You probably have your armor to thank for that
3566. >It would leave one hell of a scar though
3567. >You looked up, torn from your inspection as a violet orb floated down gently in front of you
  3568. "D-Dust?"
3569. >She turned around to face it, backing up and letting out a short scream when she realized what it was
  3570. >The orb was massive
3571. >The pitch of the magical hum was low enough to rattle your bones
3572. >It contorted and shifted, sprouting massive wings and claws
3573. >It began to resemble something you were familiar with, but hadn't seen yourself in person
3574. >Lightning Dust pointed out the obvious
  3575. >"Is that a fucking-"
3576. >A dragon of pure energy spawned from the orb, roaring loud enough to deafen you for a few moments
3577. >Without thinking, you pushed Lightning Dust behind you and brought yourself to a standing position, using your sword for leverage
3578. >You readied yourself for the greatest conflict of your life before the beast began to collapse
3579. >You heard Twilight from the balcony
3580. >"I GOT IT! I got it! Sorry! Hehe..."
3581. >You sighed, feeling every one of your muscles relax as you fell back to the ground
3582. >What exactly were you expecting to do anyway?
  3583. >You need a nap
3584. >You must be losing it
3585. >You heard hooves gently land behind you
3586. >Spitfire's trademark raspy voice came at you
3587. >"What the hell were you expecting to do to that dragon? You've got guts, I'll give you that!"
3588. >You didn't have the energy to respond
3589. >"You might be lacking some brain power, but hey, that's not what I need you for."
  3590.
3591. >She gestured to Lighting Dust
3592. >"That was sweet of you. Trying to protect her like that, I mean."
3593. >Rainbow Dash and Twilight now flew down to your side
3594. >Twilight took the more sensible approach
3595. >"Anonymous, are you okay?! You look-"
3596. >And there was Rainbow to interrupt her
3597. >"THAT WAS SO AWESOME! Did you guys see it when Anon killed that timberwolf with his bare hands?! Or when he was all 'I'm not done yet!' and he stood up after getting clawed open to take out that manticore?!"
  3598. >Spitfire laughed
3599. >"I did see it Rainbow Dash, not to mention he was ready to keep going. You sure do have an indomitable spirit, Anon."
3600. >That's probably not how you would describe it
3601. >You'd argue that you were just dumb
3602. >"I think that you've more than earned the position."
3603. >You wanted to be happy
3604. >You wanted to be fucking ecstatic
3605. >But damn, you're body wasn't having any of that
3606. >Rainbow Dash and Dust were plenty excited for you anyway
3607. >The two of them pulled you upward and sandwiched you with their hugs
3608. >Dash was over the moon
3609. >"YES! DID YOU HEAR THAT?! YOU'RE GONNA BE A BODYGUARD FOR THE WONDERBOLTS!"
3610. >Her screaming was probably worse than the roar of the dragon
3611. >Dust nuzzled against you, kissing your cheek
3612. >"You did it! YOU ACTUALLY DID IT, ANONYMOUS!"
3613. >She looked over to Rainbow Dash
  3614. >Then to Spitfire
3615. >She knew who the real composers of your future were
  3616. >Her future as well
3617. >"Thank you. Both of you. For everything."
3618. >Twilight seemed beyond proud of this moment
  3619. >Rainbow Dash smiled
3620. >Maybe they could get along after all
  3621. >"Eh, don't mention it."
  3622. >You laughed before shouting
3623. "This is all very nice, but can I please go to the fucking hospital now?!"
3624. >There was a resounding agreement that that would be the best option
  3625. >...
  3626.
  3627. >...
3628. >This was your favorite part of the show
3629. >It took them months to get it right
3630. >Training had been hell on both of you, really
3631. >But damn, was it worth it
3632. >The ticket sales supported your opinion
3633. >You were leaned up against a pole
3634. >You were out of sight, but keeping a close eye on things
3635. >The Cloudsdale stadium roared with excitement as the Wonderbolts' most famous maneuver began
3636. >Most of the team spread out, leaving a capturing design with their smoke trails
3637. >The last two members, Lightning Dust and Rainbow Dash began to rocket higher into the sky
3638. >You heard that they have a personal competition to see who can reach the right altitude first, but you had never asked her to confirm that rumor
3639. >Personally, you saw no clear winner this time
3640. >Going nearly out of sight with their distance, the two pegasi began their dead drop that turned into a furious acceleration
3641. >This was so fucking cool
3642. >A trail of Rainbow and Lightning formed behind each of them respectively before they reached their max velocity
3643. >A speed they reached right around the time they were just above the crowd
  3644. >Perfect
3645. >An incredibly loud boom rung out across the entire stadium as an electric ring of every color you could think of shot out in all directions
  3646. >Simply beautiful
3647. >And judging by the resounding cheers, everyone agreed with you
3648. >They turned just before hitting the ground
3649. >You felt the wind catch your clothing as they passed by
3650. >This was never going to get old
3651. >But with the end of the show signaled, it was time for you to head over to the team
3652. >Fans always seemed to get a little antsy during the autograph signings
3653. >You met up with Lightning Dust
3654. >You waited patiently for her to finish signing an autograph before she noticed you
  3655. >"Anonymous!"
3656. >She flew from the table, jumping into your arms
3657. >The familiar warmth brought a smile to your face
  3658.
3659. >You greeted her in turn
3660. "You were great out there, Dust! As always."
  3661. >She smiled
  3662. >"Thanks, Anon. I-"
3663. >She yelped, turning as someone yanked on her wing
  3664. >It was a male pegasus
3665. >You had never seen him before in your life
  3666. >Some ponies were unbelievable
3667. >This job had taught you that
3668. >"Hey, some of us have been waiting in line for a while! Get back to it, will ya?"
  3669. >Dust's eyes narrowed
  3670. >"Anonymous."
3671. >You stepped between the two of them
3672. >You were much larger than him
  3673. >Ponies were so adorable
3674. >You were very proud of how stern your voice could be now after so much time trying to be intimidating
3675. "Sir, step away from the Wonderbolt. She'll resume signing autographs shortly."
3676. >How many times have you said that?
  3677. >You'd love to know
  3678. >He shoved you
3679. >"And who are you supposed to be, monkey? I'm within my-"
3680. >You stopped paying attention to him as you looked across the lines of fans to Spitfire
  3681. >She nodded
3682. >Training certainly had been hell on both of you
3683. >And the results were fantastic
3684. >You brought your knee into the stallion
3685. >His breath went out immediately, and he collapsed to the ground
3686. >You were kind of hoping for something a little more
  3687. >Lightning Dust laughed
3688. >"I'm gonna enjoy that from now until the day we retire!"
3689. >Her eyes widened as she remembered something
3690. >"Hey, me and Rainbow Dash were gonna go to the bar after the show, you wanna join us?"
3691. >She brushed up against you
3692. >"It's the same one you met me in. Ya know, for old time's sake!"
  3693. >You smiled
3694. "I'd love to! Is anyone else-?"
3695. >Your eyes widened as you remembered something as well
3696. >It had almost been an hour
3697. >You turned, stepping over the pegasus as you began to fast-walk elsewhere
3698. >Dust, confused, called after to you
3699. >"Anonymous? Where are you going?"
  3700. >"I'll be right back!"
3701. >You looked down at your feet
3702. >And the clouds that they touched only through the graces of magic
3703. >While the bar sounded nice, it would be best if some things from that night didn't repeat
  3704.
  3705. >The End
