  1. >Lapis and Steven were having yet another one of their lazy days of relaxation on the beachfront
  2. >currently they were hard at work constructing a decadent sand castle out of the damp sand on the edge of the ocean
  3. >Steven was in awe as they worked, as to say their little castle was extravagant was an understatement,
  4. never has Steven made one of at least five stories, with towers twisting outward this way and that at angles that seemed to defy gravity
  5. >"Lapis, you're great at this," Steven said with glee from the opposite side of the castle, "I was never able to make stuff like this when it was just me and Connie!"
  6. >in truth Lapis was using her powers to cheat a little and use the water within the sand to hold it all together, but if it made Steven's eyes light up in that special way they always did (and made her look superior to Connie) then Lapis supposed it mattered little how the castle was constructed
  7. >Still, Lapis couldn't help but blush as the compliment. "Y-You think so? I don't know, I really don't know what I'm doing."
  8. >"No, really," assured Steven with a sweet smile, "You're great! I gotta remember to ask for your help more with this kind of thing!"
  9. >"Oh, s-sure thing, Steven," Lapis breathed out, blushing even harder. Steven thought she was great, Steven wanted her help, Steven wanted to spend even more time with her. The words kept running through her mind over and over and over. Those words made her gut tighten, made her heart flip and her chest ache.
  10. >She hardly paid any attention to the castle, only enough to keep it together. All she could think about was how happy Steven, and only Steven, could make her. She wanted to make him happy too, she wanted to spend all her time with him, and make him feel as loved as he made her feel.
  11. >Lapis stayed lost in her thoughts until she heard a strange buzzing noise.
  12. >Steven phone had gone off, and it broke Lapis out of the trance she put herself in where she and Steven were the only two people in the world.
  13. >Steven pulled out his phone and checked who was calling him.
  14. >"Oh, it's Connie," he said as Lapis's heart sank, "sorry Lapis, I'll only be a second."
  15. >Steven answered his phone and began chattering with Connie, staring off into the ocean absentmindedly while Lapis glared at the phone, directing all her hate towards the one on the other end of the line. How dare she, Connie, interrupt the intimate moment Steven and her were having together. Connie knew today was the day that Lapis was going to hang out with Steven, did Connie really need to ruin everything, didn't she know how to wait or share? Better yet, why should Lapis share Steven with HER? Lapis knew she could make Steven more happy than anyone else could, just now was proof of that. Lapis bet that Connie never made Steven as happy as she did. Connie was never called great, Connie wasn't great, Lapis was great, because Steven said so, and Steven made Lapis feel great. But Connie, so obviously jealous of what Steven and Lapis had, just had to hone in and try to muck things up. Lapis supposed Steven didn't appreciate his quality time being interrupted either, just the thought made Lapis detest Connie even more.
  16. >"..pis." Connie wasn't going to get in their way.
  17. >".apis." Lapis wouldn't let her.
  18. >"Lapis," called Steven.
  19. >"Ah! Y-Yes, Steven," said Lapis, Steven's words bringing her back to reality.
  20. >"Connie asked if it was alright if she could come hang out with us," he said, "would that be alright with you?"
  21. >Lapis could feel her nonexistent blood boil, because no of course it wasn't alright. Connie was trying to drive a wedge between Steven and Lapis, that silly girl was too insecure and jealous for her own good. Just as Lapis was about to respond with a flat 'no', she stopped herself and thought a bit more.
  22. >Maybe... she could use this opportunity as a way to set things straight... at what other opportunity would Lapis have a chance of meeting Connie?
  23. >"Hmmm, I suppose it'd be alright if she wanted to come," Lapis said in a rather detached manner.
  24. >"Great, I'll tell her to come right over then," Steven said, and he went back to chatting on his phone to deliver Connie the "good" news.
  25. >It'll be good alright, Lapis pleasantly thought to herself.
  26. >About 20 minutes later, which in the meantime Steven and Lapis continued to work on their castle and make light conversation together, Connie came into view, exiting her father's car who then drove away on the boardwalk. Steven noticed her first.
  27. >"Ah, Lapis look! Connie's here," he shouted, and then began waving his arms and yelling loudly to get Connie's attention.
  28. >"Oh," Lapis said, trying to hide her disgust.
  29. >Connie looked over and finally noticed Steven screaming for her. She waved back and shouted something indecipherable, before running towards the two beach buddies.
  30. >"Hey Steven," Connie said, "Sorry about the wait, you wouldn't believe the traffic."
  31. >"It's no problem," said Steven, giving her a hug while Lapis watched with a scowl. Steven directed his attention to Lapis, who he thought must've felt left out. Lapis quickly dropped the scowl and hoped he didn't notice.
  32. >"You remember Lapis, right," Steven said to Connie, as he motioned as if presenting Lapis to her.
  33. >"Ooooh yeah, h-hey Lapis," Connie said a bit awkwardly and without much warmth.
  34. >"Hm," Lapis mumbled while giving her a half-hearted wave.
  35. >Silence lingered for a few seconds, and Steven felt the need to break the coldness between his two friends.
  36. >"It's nice that you two can hang out again, huh," Steven said while pulling the both of them into a hug. Lapis shifted to get further away from Connie.
  37. >"Yeah, it's great," Lapis said listlessly.
  38. >"Heheh," Steven laughed nervously, "We've never all hung out together like this, let's try to make it fun, okay?" Steven finally released the two, and they immediately inched away from each other. Steven sighed, he'd have a lot of work to do if he was going to get them to play nice. He looked down at the castle he and Lapis had been building, and an idea struck him.
