Barrett Brown Getting Re-Arrested

As D Magazine has reported, Barrett Brown has been rearrested by the Federal Bureau of Prisons (BOP) for giving on camera interview's to Vice News' Ben Makuch (@BMakuch). I contacted Mr. Makuch, but haven't heard back yet with the details of what may have triggered the arrest.  So outside of what the D Magazine article says, this seems like a political retribution.  Giving interviews should be protected under the first amendment, even for prisoners.  Barrett Brown wasn't incarcerated at the time of the interview, he had been paroled into a halfway house.  So, was giving an interview to a news organization a parole violation? That seems like a flimsy excuse they might have used to re-incarcerate him.

I wasn't even aware that the Federal Bureau of Prisons could place people under arrest, I assumed their task was just to run the prison system and catalog inmates that are warehoused within their system.

So, here is what you can do to show your solidarity with Barrett Brown and make the prison industrial complex stand up and take notice.

1) Visit https://www.bop.gov/inmateloc/ and enter Brown's BOP Registration Number: 45047-177
Then, on the right hand side of the page, under 'Related Links' there is a link called 'Voice a concern'. Click that, and enter in the fields such as email address, your location, use inmate's name (Barrett Brown) for field 3, and then tell the Federal Bureau of Prisons what you think about this flagrant violation of Brown's constitution right's to freedom of speech being taken away and putting him back in jail as a political prisoner. If you don't want to use your real email address, you can use a temporary or disposable one, but make sure you check it after you voice your complaint incase they want you to verify your email address.  If you already know of one you prefer, great, use that, otherwise here is a list, which is a bit old and I can't promise they will work. https://www.ghacks.net/2012/05/31/the-ultimate-disposable-email-provider-list-2012/.  Of course you can always just create a free Hotmail (now Outlook.com) email address, Gmail.com, Yahoo.com, or AOL.com (Yes, they are still in business and still give out free emails!) - Here is where you can sign up https://v.gd/AOL_FreeEmail (I used v.gd since it will tell you where you're going before you get sent there, so there's an extra layer of trust)

If you don't want to reveal your IP address to the Federal Bureau of Prisons you can use a free VPN service to mask it.  However, you really shouldn't be concerned.  You aren't committing a crime by sending a message to BOP, it's like emailing your representative in Congress. It's just part of the political process.  However, here is a list of a few good VPN services.  I don't believe you can use a web based proxy, because BOP is running SSL (Secure Socket Layer - i.e.: https://) connections on their site.

However, as I said, you don't really need to worry about hiding your IP or email address unless you are just really paranoid about the government tracking you for some reason - and we all know they are all already doing that thanks to Edward Snowden.

The important thing is to send a message to BOP and let them know this unconstitutional behavior will not stand! If you want, as far as I know, no one has yet created a change.org petition to petition the government to release Brown back to his halfway house.  Please do not create more than one change.org petition.  More than 1 petition just divides the community in how many people sign one petition vs another, whereas with one petition it gets the bulk of the signatures from everyone and stays on track. Another idea could be to use the House Oversite Committee's Whistleblower Site and fill out a complaint about the Federal Bureau of Prisons is abusing an inmates constitutional rights (obviously this happens all the time, but in this instance, we have widely documented evidence to expose it and possibly have Congress look into it).
