  2.
  3. Solitary shrine
  4.
  5. Once the times were unhappy and a plague spread across the land.
  6. Little anon brushed his teeth twice a day and ate his veggies so he was fine, but everyone in his village died, and so he left.
  7.
  8. Night came and he became lost in the woods. Little anon was afraid, but then he saw a light in the dark!
  9.
  10. He arrived in another village, and here everyone had died also, but the night watchman had cared for his lamp, and this lamp had become a Chochin-Obake!
  11. Little anon was glad to find light in the dark, and the Chochin-Obake was glad to have someone whose path to illuminate again, and so they set out together.
  12.
  13. Then came the rain, and anon got wet and cold and the lamp’s flame grew weak!
  14.
  15. Anon and his lamp became wet and sought refuge in another village, but here also everyone had perished.
  16. From only one house's chimney there came smoke, and thence anon and his lamp went.
  17. Here had once lived a man who made and sold parasols and umbrellas. The first he had ever made he had never sold, but had kept for himself, and cared for greatly, and now it had become a Karakasa-Obake!
  18. The umbrella girl was glad to shield anon and the lamp, and so they set out together, and for a time they were glad.
  19.
  20. Then came the wind, and it made the flame flutter and the umbrella couldn't protect her friends from it!
  21.
  22. They sought refuge in another village, but here too everyone had died. But a voice called out to them, and on a clothes-line they found an Ittan-Momen who had once been the robe of a monk, and his only possession
  23.
  24. The cloth-girl shielded her friends from the wind's chill, the umbrella kept them all dry and the lamp lit their way, and so anon and her friends went up to the great lake in the woods.
  25.
  26. Here they found a solitary shrine, and a Ryu who the people had once worshipped
  27. "I am glad you have come" she said, "for I have been very alone since the people stopped visiting"
  28.
  29. So anon and his friends found a new home in the shrine, and none of them were alone anymore, and they were all cared for because a dragon's most precious treasure are the people she loves.

  33. Green Wurm
  34.
  35. Everyone knows that babies are delivered by storks. Once a daddy and a mommy Wurm were to get so many eggs, the stork didn't notice one fell off.
  36.
  37. Wheeeeeeeew went the egg as it fell from the sky!
  38. KABOOM went the ground the egg hit it!
  39.
  40. There was now a sturdy Wurm egg embedded in the ground, and there in the sun it baked until it hatched.
  41. “HI I'M DAISY!” said the little Wurm, but rather than a mommy and a daddy, she was greeted by a batch of freshly hatched Greenworms.
  42. Om-nom-nom went the worms as they chewed on leaves.
  43. Daisy the Wurm nodded solemnly, this seemed to be the thing to do, so on leaves she chewed also.
  44. Om-nom-nom went Daisy the Wurm, and the Greenworms also nodded solemnly, they had a new sister, if a little different from the rest.
  45.
  46. Greenworms eat to grow, and grow they do. Faster still grew Daisy the Wurm, but she thought nothing of it and neither did her sisters. But she was different in other ways, for all Wurms know by nature to burrow into the ground, while Greenworms can at best burrow into the hollows of trees for the winter. One clever grub thought to use Daisy’s skill.
  47. “We’ll burrow under Farmer Joe’s fences and ditches and come up right in his tomato patch!” she said, and one moonlit night past their usual bedtime the wily wiggly ones followed up on their clever plan.
