- Homework: p. 163 practice 2, and write (2 or 3) sentences describing “possible” travel problems
- Example: I arrive in Paris and realize the airport is very far from the city, and the buses and trains have stopped running.
- (The examples on my curriculum are: double booking, lost passport, zombie infestation, etc.)
- ---
- p. 163 practice 2
- 2 has raised, has been walking
- 3 have been coming (have come), has increased (has been increasing)
- 4 hasn’t been traveling, has seen (already = finished)
- 5 have completed, have you been training (training is finished, but only recently)
- I have been teaching for 2 hours. = I have been teaching without breaks for 2 hours. I am teaching in this moment (or just finished teaching).
- I have been teaching for 2 years. = This has been my job for 2 years, but I’ve had breaks and I may not be teaching in this moment.
- Extended present: “these days”, but maybe not “right now”
- ---
- Why are you so tired?
- I have been working all day. (I’m not working now, but you still see the result of my working.)
- If you use present perfect (not continuous) with a quantity of time (all day, for two weeks, etc.), it should be the long action or non-action meaning.
- (The long action meaning is the one you can use with simple present: “I study English.” but not “I study English today.”)
- ---
- The most common case when we use perfect continuous is with a quantity of time (answer to “how long”). (This is always true for future perfect continuous.)
- ---
- I have written three books. = Each book is finished.
- I have been writing three books. = Each book is unfinished.
- I have _______ three books. (With no other information, both “written” and “been writing” are correct.)
- I have _____ for ten years. (Should be “been writing”, because it tell us a quantity of time.)
- ---

- 5 You are driving in a country without Internet, and you can’t find any signs on the road. 10
- 6 You’re traveling and haven’t booked any hotels, and it’s the 4th of July so you have to sleep in your car. 6
