  1. Adele is the resident lich of the manor. A short woman with a passive face, but an eye for fashion. She is nothing if not capable of pleasing Cecille. She’s responsible for many of the innovations that have come to your ward in the past few decades. In Cecille’s own words, she didn’t know why she’d never hired a resident lich before.
  2.
  3. Cecille danced through the corridors. She was in an exceptionally good mood, presumably because of your very expensive and very rare gift. She knocks on the ornate door.
  4.
  5. “Come in.”
  6.
  7. You follow your wife inside. Adele’s room is a combination library-laboratory-bedroom, and by the chief god is it a complete mess. There are books and pieces of parchment everywhere! Adele is floating at the top of one of the shelves.
  8.
  9. “Adele dear, do you have any news for me?”
  10.
  11. “Huh. Oh, Mistress…” Despite giving you permission to enter a few seconds ago, Adele had seemingly forgotten that you were here, “My magical research is progressing greatly, it won’t be long before my new spell is perfected.”
  12.
  13. “Oh spare me the magic talk dear, I’m talking about those new girls!”
  14.
  15. A long time ago Cecille had come up with a rather fascinating idea. There were many men and women the world over who desired to be together for longer. In order to encourage people to move into the ward she instigated a programme aimed at couples who feared death. Of course, many monster girls have incredible lifespans that remove the need for undead intervention.
  16.
  17. But there are also many women who haven’t been touched by the chief god. Unfortunate mortals who have died to disease, illness, or simply the passage of time. The arms of your city are open to those separated lovers, and Adele will grant them a new beginning. To cross the barrier that you yourself transcended decades ago.
  18.
  19. Cecille is a hopeless romantic. She’s almost paralyzed by the idea of seeing people come together. Her own days of longing for companionship are over – so she lives vicariously by gossiping with Adele about all the new couples that are in town, since the Lich is the one responsible for taking care of such matters.
  20.
  21. One leg is peaked high in the air as her hands come together, her cheeks flush with excitement, “Young lovers. Are they not the most wonderful thing in the world?”
  22.
  23. Adele does not share your wife’s enthusiasm, “It’s been a slow month.” She lazily floats down with a new book between her hands, “In fact, I’ve only seen two couples.”
  24.
  25. “Two is better than none.”
  26.
  27. Adele places the book down onto her desk. She glances to her right and picks up something that strikes a familiar chord with you, “I should return this. I have completed it.” Cecille takes the book from Adele and looks at the cover with a smile.
  28.
  29. “Darling.”
  30.
  31. “Oui?”
  32.
  33. “Did you lend Adele one of your manga volumes?” It’s a question that doesn’t need an answer. It’s a “married for a long time” question which suggests a certain level of dissatisfaction with your other half.
  34.
  35. “It was most intriguing, however the practicality of many of the concepts presented do not align with reality, and thus destroys the usually firm suspension of disbelief that fiction should create.” You recognize the volume well. The first of a long series of spin-off entries from the main Redanner series, expanded universe material created by outside writers.
  36.
  37. “Were you not attempting to keep this passion of yours secret?”
  38.
  39. “Rest easy dear husband. Adele will not speak a word without my permission.”
  40.
  41. “I don’t think she speaks to anyone else at all… Adele, have you considered finding a husband?”
  42.
  43. “Yes. However my calculations indicate that the time spent attempting to search for a suitable partner is an inefficient use of my time. Despite the increase in mana production that a husband would provide, my best estimates suggest that it would take me twenty years. Twenty years that could be spent on my research.”
  44.
  45. “Non, do not speak such words in my presence dear!” Cecille slides into Adele’s personal space and wraps her into a cleavage filled hug, “We must find you a life partner, a man who can make that long still heart of yours beat again!” Adele had made a fatal mistake. Mentioning an enjoyment of singledom in her vicinity was testament to marriage vows.
  46.
  47. Adele manages to wriggle free and floats out of arm’s reach, “Mistress, please cease. Your husband will become jealous of your physical affection – which is traditionally directed towards a significant other.” She has such a way with words, poetry in speech. How could such an eligible bachelorette still be on the market after all these years?
  48.
  49. Cecille pouts and points an accusatory finger, “Do not cover your desire with trifling words my dear servant! As payment for your years of devoted service, I will find you a husband worthy of your grace and intelligence.”
  50.
  51. “Ninety-nine percent of all men who move into your ward are already married. The odds of success are incredibly slim.”
  52.
  53. “And they will not grow larger by hiding away in this room! Do the words of Kenzaki not inspire confidence in your spirit? Have you not read the volume I gave you?”
  54.
  55. Oh for the chief god’s sake. You need to put a stop to this before she puts any silly ideas in the poor woman’s head, you put your hand on Cecille’s shoulder and interject before she can go any further, “She is right dear. There are few unmarried men in our ward. And her work keeps her rather busy. Might I suggest a more practical solution?”
  56.
  57. “Yes, what is it?”
  58.
  59. “If there are no men in the ward, we’ll have to look elsewhere.”
  60.
  61. “I see.”
  62.
  63. “And since Adele is a woman who enjoys her solitude and reading – I know just the type of man who would be perfect for her! Perhaps the kind of man that one may find at a certain model building contest?”
  64.
  65. Cecille’s eyes light up, she leans in and kisses you on the cheek, “Très bien. What a fabulous idea!”
  66.
  67. “Model building? Like the ward diorama that you occupy yourself with?” Adele asks, ignorant to the true extend of your wife’s… hobbies.
  68.
  69. “Non! Models of the magnifique titans within this book, are they not the most striking forms you have seen in an age? Surely the designs kindled a small flame within your heart.”
  70.
  71. “Maybe. Your hypothesis demands more evidence before I can make a conclusion. Pray tell, show me the next volume of this tale and I will consider your proposal.”
  72.
  73. “Of course! The second story is greater than the last!”
  74.
  75. Oh no, it’s spreading.
