trek lower decks notes
-i love the theme music, it fits in very well. the intro theme visuals are funny and set the mood of the show well. and it has a realistic black hole! Thank you, Interstellar, for making realistic black holes mainstream.
-Energy is a little uncomfortable for a star trek show. Very high energy, the crew seem like teenagers in a tv show made for teenagers, if that makes sense.
-I didn't really understand Ensign Mariner's romanticization of being an ensign. Like, it kind of would make sense if there were a strict class heirarchy, but for the most part a starfleet starship has a just heirarchy based upon experience, and people move up the ranks fairly quickly. This was alleviated slightly by Mariner's implication that she was demoted back down to ensign.
-the show is gorgeous. I adore the art style.
-Tendi is an orion woman! YES! FANTASTIC! Justice for Orions!
-CBS all access is a paid service, therefore I should not be seeing mid-show advertisements. Fuck CBS.
-Cartoonishly non-humanoid aliens! Yes!
-TNG sound effects. They know how to play into nostalgia in all the right ways.
-Commander seems mean, but maybe the POV character, Boimler, is an ureliable narrator?
-Ooooh drama! Genuine and realistic conflict set up by Boimler being told to keep an eye on Mariner by the captain, and we already know Mariner is a rule breaker.
-Commander is already murdering people. Blood is black though so it's not as gorey as it could be.
-fun joke where two ensigns are on a date and are just continuing their date through an action scene.
-oh nevermind the conflict between Boimler and Mariner reaches a loud and dramatic head like 5 minutes later. Laaaaame.
-During a violent viral outbreak on the Cerritos, there's apparently time to fight an angry alien monster on the planet.
-I'm liking Mariner more--she makes it clear that she's more experienced, and that she has a reasonably strong moral conviction. Anti-starfleet-bureaucracy, so she did what she could then and there.
