- (This is the Core class.)
- ---
- Explore the websites ebay, etsy, alibaba, craigslist, and other sites where you can buy things.
- How do you buy things from the site? What is unique about the site? What kinds of things does the site sell?
- Think of some other focuses or business models you could use to make a new website.
- ---
- ebay:
- doesn’t sell anything itself, just connects buyers and sellers with each other
- only in the US (maybe?)
- most items are auctioned (buyers bid, and the person willing to pay the most will get the item)
- most of the things sold on ebay are secondhand (used)
- etsy:
- mostly sells handmade and customized items (jewelry, art, clothes, accessories)
- primarily is a connection between buyers and sellers, rather than selling anything directly
- sellers can decide their own prices, which means some things are too expensive
- craigslist:
- you can find jobs, services, housing, apartments, secondhand things, dating/relationships
- online version of a newspaper classifieds sections
- people can put up advertisements, and interested customers can use craigslist to contact them
- alibaba:
- Chinese company
- they sell almost everything
- they provide connections between consumers and businesses all over the world
- ---
- In your group, choose a product focus, pricing system, buyer/seller connection structure, payment structure, and anything else you think is important. Design a website with these features. Give it a name and draw the front page of the website.

- You have a few minutes to finish your drawings, and then you will present your idea to the rest of the class.

- p. 115 part 3 - which of the things in part 2 do you see? in what order do you see them?
- 1 a metal table
- 2 caftans
- 3 dates and apricots
- 4 a man carrying vegetables
- 5 carpets
- 6 a donkey
- part 4 - choose the correct option to complete each sentence
- part 5 - who said each thing?
- ---
- bargain / haggle / negotiate
- buyer’s remorse = the regret you sometimes feel after buying something, because it wasn’t the best choice or you didn’t pay the best price
- ---
- p. 113 part 1/2 - where in the ad is each piece of information?
- part 3a - irrelevant information
- It was a gift from my parents.
- Selling because...decor. (the whole paragraph is irrelevant)
- ---
- Homework: prepare an ad / product page for something you want to sell. Include the information from p. 113 parts 1 and part 4, and check with the questions in part 5.
- (However, you can sell this item on the website you designed today instead of eBay.)
