- Pronoun reduction:
- he -> ‘e
- him -> ‘im
- his -> ‘is
- her -> ‘er
- hers -> ‘ers
- them -> ‘em
- As usual, we only reduce the pronunciation like this when the words are not stressed. If they come after a pause, or if they have stress, we pronounce the full word.
- Did you invite her/him/them to your party?
- - If this is a normal question and I’m just asking out of curiosity, the first sound is dropped.
- - If I’m surprised that you invited her/him/them, I pronounce the word fully and with stress.
- John likes sugar, but he doesn’t like chocolate. - “he” is unstressed, so it’s pronounced ‘e
- She likes chocolate, but he hates it. - “he” is stressed (contrastive stress), so it’s pronounced completely

- p. 94 part A - write the pronunciation for each pronoun in the paragraph. (Some will be reduced, some won’t be.)
