Riding in the Night

I ride in the night ‘cause the bike is my escape
I ride in the night ‘cause it’s in almost dying that I feel most alive
I ride in the night ‘cause I don’t want the day to come
I ride in the night ‘cause it makes me feel whole
I ride in the night ‘cause the city lights light up my mind
I ride in the night ‘cause you’re always on my mind
Most of all, I ride in the night to one day reach you
For I know you’re there in the stars
And with each passing day
I miss you more and more
I know that riding might lead me to die
I’m not a fool to think otherwise
But I see you up there, counting stars in the heavens
And I want to join you there
For though it’s been three years since ya left
It’s felt like an eternity
Being out on my own, in a cold and uncaring world
I long to see my life go by me
For what is my life to me without you
My pearls and dresses; they’re all meaningless without you
I miss your goofy smile
Your long brown hair that blew in the wind
And I remember you, on the bike whom you loved more than your ma
As we’d both ride off into the night
I remember those times I’d ride with you
And the times we hung out together
Shooting the breeze and goofing off
Parking our bikes by the old abandoned drive-in
And smoking and drinking ‘til we’d fall asleep
I remember wanting to make you mine
But never having the courage to tell you what I felt
Waiting and waiting as the days passed by
But never feeling quite ready til that day came
The day still lingers in my mind, as vivid as a photo shoot
You were in your bike riding at high speed on the highway when a drunk driver met ya there
I was told you’d died an hour later
“Nothing could be done” said the doctors
“He died almost instantly”, they continued
And though I was glad ya didn’t suffer
I knew then and there that I’d failed
I’d failed miserably
For I kept my feelings for you within me
Never telling them to you when you were among the living
And so I keep on riding in the night
I’ve been told I have a death wish
I’ve been told to stop before things worsen
Yet, my life is empty without you in it
And so I keep on riding in the night
Because I know that you loved her
And so long as I keep on riding
Your spirit will be close to mine
And so
I ride in the night because I long to see you
I ride in the night because I want to tell you what I didn’t tell you when I should
I ride in the night because I feel empty without you
I ride in the night because the void in me must be met
The woman I am must die, so we may live in death
