- 13:22 Fett yo
- 13:24 *** Fett is now known as BFett
- 13:34 Talvieno Heyaa. (:
- 13:34 Talvieno Sorry, I'm a bit late as per usual, BFett. lol
- 13:35 BFett not a problem
- 13:35 Talvieno What's up?
- 13:36 Cha0zz ola
- 13:36 Cha0zz all hail Tal Vien No!
- 13:37 BFett I haven't had feedback on the ship memory picture I made yesterday
- 13:37 Talvieno Lol XD Heyaa, Cha0zz. =P
- 13:37 Talvieno BFett, I must've missed it.
- 13:37 Cha0zz ship memory picture BFett ?
- 13:37 BFett yeah, I only linked it here I'll link it again
- 13:39 BFett Mandalorian

- 13:40 BFett I was just looking for feedback on it
- 13:40 Talvieno It looks fairly fixed...
- 13:40 BFett whether or not it was accurate to the idea that Cornflakes was suggesting
- 13:41 Talvieno I suppose that would make it a lot easier to write a mod, but.
- 13:41 BFett the AV can still move around and such
- 13:42 BFett the programs fluctuate in size
- 13:42 Talvieno The idea Cornflakes was suggesting was that all programs just floated around in the ship's memory loosely, and could deform to take whatever shape they needed, so AV an viruses could flow about between them, and you could hook/unhook components.
- 13:42 Talvieno Which is more gamey, I suppose.
- 13:42 BFett based on which is being used...
- 13:42 Talvieno *AV and
- 13:42 Talvieno I really don't like this keyboard.
- 13:43 Talvieno It [would] make it a lot easier to understand what's going on, though... your version, I mean...
- 13:43 BFett hook unhook? Well I think in a editor mode that would be possible
- 13:44 Talvieno Your version gives me an idea...
- 13:45 Talvieno What if we could write supersimplified scripts in the form of if>then statements?
- 13:45 Talvieno "If [X] < [Y] then [Z]"
- 13:45 BFett For the virus?
- 13:45 Talvieno If [shields] < [20%], [reroute more power to shields]"
- 13:46 Talvieno More automation.
- 13:46 Talvieno No, for the player, to give more value to the computer.
- 13:46 BFett ok, how does this relate to the ship memory profile
- 13:46 Talvieno It doesn't, it was just a random idea I got by seeing how you hooked shields with sensors.
- 13:47 Talvieno (which otherwise doesn't make much sense to me)
- 13:47 Talvieno same with the propulsion and communication.
- 13:47 BFett It's a good idea
- 13:47 BFett I did it because they are systems that you don't want hacked
- 13:47 BFett hence the fat firewall
- 13:48 Talvieno *nods* "If [IFF.Foe.count] > [0] then [raise shields]" could be another script...
- 13:48 Talvieno So, curious, what advantages does this have over the shiny thing I made?
- 13:49 Talvieno the over-graphicalizationistic one.
- 13:49 BFett 1) the firewall is restricted to be behind a port
- 13:50 Talvieno Well, with mine, I did assume there were ports... I just didn't draw any.
- 13:50 BFett 2) firewalls can vary in thickness based on priority
- 13:50 Talvieno mine works the same way, but with mods rather than physical thickness.
- 13:50 Talvieno i should've drawn ports. :\ lol
- 13:51 BFett yeah, the firewall all around the memory was a bit confusing to me
- 13:51 *** outlander quit (Quit: Nettalk6 - www.ntalk.de)
- 13:51 BFett It works in theory... but in practice you only need it behind each port
- 13:51 Talvieno It's to keep viruses from "bypassing it" by going around.
- 13:51 Talvieno In my version, everything deforms.
- 13:52 Talvieno An incoming virus would push things backwards to make room for itself, and could then go around til it found a gap in the firewall.
- 13:52 Talvieno if the firewall is just a bar, that's pretty easy to do.
- 13:53 Talvieno In your version viruses seem to travel on fixed "paths".
- 13:53 BFett yeah
- 13:53 Talvieno i.e. they must defeat program A to reach program B.
- 13:53 BFett yep, that's how I envisioned it
- 13:53 Talvieno it would make it a lot easier for AV to detect viruses too.
- 13:53 Talvieno it'd be obvious where they were.
- 13:54 Talvieno No flanking maneuvers or stealth.
- 13:54 Talvieno (Not trying to shoot your idea down, trying to get a good debate going)
- 13:54 BFett I thought about connecting all the systems together inside the memory but decided against it
- 13:55 Talvieno *nods* Fair enough. What was the reason?
- 13:55 BFett (I know that's what I want)
- 13:57 Talvieno Why did you decide against it?
- 13:57 BFett just space and ease of seeing things... also I thought about security, how some items are separate from each other on a computer. Like the difference between an admin account and a normal user
- 13:57 BFett They are on the same system yet separate
- 13:57 Talvieno *nods* I guess so... it'll make virus warfare a lot more difficult, though. It'll be harder for an enemy to hack your ship, but harder for you to hack anyone else's, too, wouldn't it be?
- 13:58 BFett yep
- 13:58 Talvieno From what I see, you could say "nothing is connected to the comms except comms".
- 13:58 Talvieno So hacking would be futile.
- 13:58 Talvieno Why would you want to hack someone's comms?
- 13:58 BFett You'd have to know what you wanted to attack first.
- 13:59 Talvieno Let's say I wanted to attack shields to lower the enemy's shields.
- 13:59 Talvieno In your diagram, it looks like I wouldn't be able to get to the shields at all.
- 13:59 Talvieno The port for shields wouldn't be connected to the comms, obviously.
- 13:59 BFett Hacking comms could be similar to jamming transmissions
- 13:59 Talvieno :\
- 14:00 Talvieno like...
- 14:01 BFett You couldn't attack shields through the comms port
- 14:01 Talvieno broadcasting interference to make it so they couldn't receive anything?
- 14:01 BFett that is correct
- 14:01 *** August quit (Quit: Leaving)
- 14:01 Talvieno so... there would be no way for me to make the enemy's ship fly into an asteroid, then?
- 14:01 BFett or ask for help
- 14:01 Talvieno that's not really hacking...
- 14:02 *** Katawa joined #limittheory
- 14:02 +++ ChanServ has given op to Katawa
- 14:02 Talvieno It makes it safer, but it eliminates the need for e-warfare.
- 14:02 Talvieno Heyaa, Katawa. (:
- 14:02 BFett Hack propulsion then you can crash them into an asteroid
- 14:03 Talvieno I figured you'd just mod a virus to tell it what to attack.
- 14:03 BFett Hacking comms wouldn't likely be that common.... Josh had it on his diagram so I added it
- 14:03 Talvieno You'd have to do it in your system, too.
- 14:04 BFett correct
- 14:04 BFett Virus programming is a different screen
- 14:04 Talvieno I figured that, yeah...
- 14:04 Katawa :3
- 14:05 Talvieno *waves at Katawa*
- 14:05 Katawa y'all excited
- 14:05 Talvieno Excited?
- 14:06 BFett I am! I had a dream that Josh made a youtube video about finishing the LT UI!
- 14:06 BFett I woke up before I got to see it though
- 14:08 *** Cornflakes joined #limittheory
- 14:08 +++ ChanServ has given voice to Cornflakes
- 14:08 Cornflakes boop
- 14:08 BFett Hello Cornflakes
- 14:08 Cornflakes heyhey
- 14:08 Cornflakes anything interesting going on?
- 14:09 BFett Talvieno and I are talking about the diagram I made yesterday
- 14:09 Cornflakes ah
- 14:09 TGS lol BFett finishing the LT UI? You mean the thing that should have been finished a long time ago?
- 14:09 Talvieno I'm not sold on BFett's version.
- 14:09 Cornflakes its for pieces that dont exist yet
- 14:09 Talvieno Quick explanation:
- 14:10 Talvieno In our version, Cornflakes, viruses can go wherever they want, right? Split up, flank, go invisible, etc.
- 14:10 TGS I really hope there isn't any "programming" in the game.
- 14:10 Talvieno This isn't programming, TGS.
- 14:10 Cornflakes (can anyone shoot me a pastebin of the discussion until now?)
- 14:10 Talvieno This is just for virus warfare. =P
- 14:10 Talvieno Sure, Cornflakes.
- 14:10 Cornflakes its just /called/ programming
