  4. saved him on the outside. Her savage talons
  5. failed to rip the web of his warshirt.
  6. Then once she touched bottom, that wolfish swimmer
  7. carried the ring-mailed prince to her court
  8. so that for all his courage he could never use
  9. the weapons he carried; and a bewildering horde
  10. came at him from the depths, droves of sea-beasts
  11. who attacked with tusks and tore at his chain-mail
  12. in a ghastly onslaught. The gallant man
  13. could see he had entered some hellish turn-hole
  14. and yet the water did not work against him
  15. because the hall-roofing held off
  16. the force of the current; then he saw firelight,
  17. a gleam and flare-up, a glimmer of brightness.
