Chapter 5-8: Fleece or Shield is a matter of personal preference. Both is safer at the cost of speed.
Chapter 16 onwards: the item in parentheses is for a safer approach, especially when low on potions. Replace the Arch.
Chapter 21 onwards: replacing the Hand with the Scimitar for increased gem damage is a viable option.
Chapter 26 onwards: replacing the Arch with the Silver Compass for more potions is viable for 1 chapter.
