- [15:41] <Daroskt> ~~~Chapter 1: Shadow in the Sky~~~
- [15:41] <Daroskt> -Session 11-
- [15:41] <Daroskt> The exotic looking elf addresses the party with utmost seriosuness. "I came to your aid because, as of tonight, we share a common enemy. Saul Vancaskerkin."
- [15:43] * Valnar_Quartzheart "Are we talking about the same Saul that owns the Gold Goblin?"
- [15:44] * Katarina frowns. "...B-but... h-he's been s-so k-kind to us th-thus far... m-maybe this w-was a mistake?"
- [15:44] * Daroskt frowns grimly at the elf, "Give us your name elf, and start speaking sense. I do -not- like being decieved."
- [15:46] * Valnar_Quartzheart looks upset at the comment that the elf is making against the man who has given him a decent place to leave "Bah, damned elf doesn't know whats good and whats bad anymore, what makes you think we should trust you?"
- [15:47] <Daroskt> The elf nods, "I am Kwava, of the Shin'Rakorath. I apologize for not contacting you sooner, but given your closeness to Vancaskerkin, I had to be sure you were not also in league with the rogue elf. The elf I speak of is my target, and she is the primary benefactor of your former employer."
- [15:49] * Katarina tilts her head. "R-rouge e-elf?... H-how i-is th-this elf less tr-trustworthy th-than you?"
- [15:50] * Valnar_Quartzheart "Bah, I don't believe a damned thing you have to say."
- [15:51] <Daroskt> The stands firm, "Ganmeed, fetch." The hawk circling the elf shrieks, then flies over to the corpse of the wererat and begins plucking items from it. "This ambush was set up by Vancaskersin. He sought to tie up your 'loose end' after the events of that raid made him fear you might become strong enough to challenge him and his renegade assosciate, or uncover his true intentions."
- [15:51] <Daroskt> *He
- [15:53] * Daroskt grips his blade firmly, ready to draw it the instant the elf showed a sign of hostility, "Saul has been our employer for almost two months, while you are only just met to us. What possible reason have we to trust you?"
- [15:53] * Katarina blinks in slight confusion, sighing as she hears truth to the elf's words. She shakes her head at Valnar and Daroskt. "H-he's n-not lying..."
- [15:53] * Daroskt blinks, "What?"
- [15:54] <Katarina> "I-I j-just... d-don't think h-he's l-lying..."
- [15:54] * Valnar_Quartzheart turns on the girl immediately "And you trust this him?" "Bah, Damned worlds going mad."
- [15:54] <Daroskt> The elf looks between the three of them, "Surely you are at least, in part, aware of your employer's history? His only true desire is revenge against the city that robbed him of the things in his life he used to value."
- [15:55] * Katarina nods. "M-maybe j-just, h-hear him o-out?" She looks to Kwava. "Y-yes... th-though y-you mentioned t-true i-intentions?"
- [15:56] <Daroskt> Kwava notes, "While I admit this is sudden and certainly dubious sounding, I speak only the truth as I have witnessed it. If I wished you harm, I could have easily left you to the wererats."
- [15:56] * Valnar_Quartzheart "Hmph, I'll listen, but I won't trust this man, not even when the dwarven cities fall."
- [15:56] * Katarina repeats herself, "T-true i-intentions?"
- [15:59] <Daroskt> Kwava nods, "Revenge. He was ruined a year ago with the flight of his sons, the death of his wife and the loss of his hand. My target, the renegade Elf, picked him out as a tool she could use to hold a presense in the city." Ganmeed the hawk returns with many of the Wererat's posessions, dropping them into Kwava's arms. "Come with me to my camp, and I shall tell you all that I have learned."
- [15:59] * Valnar_Quartzheart doesn't like the sound of this.
- [16:00] <Daroskt> Kwava takes his bow off his back, offering it to Katarina, "If it will help to prove my sincerity, you may take my arms until you feel I can be trusted with them."
- [16:01] * Katarina blinks and nods, taking the bow and slinging it over her other shoulder. "A-alright... L-lead on."
- [16:01] * Daroskt has not yet released his grip on his blade, "Katarina... what reason do you have to believe this elf speaks even a shred of truth?"
- [16:03] * Valnar_Quartzheart "Damn girls mad."
- [16:03] * Katarina sighs and gives Daroskt a slight smile. "J-just trust me, o-okay? H-he isn't l-lying."
- [16:04] * Daroskt lets go of his blade, seeing the elf surrender his weapon. "If you are leading us on a goose chase, I will give you a stump to match Saul's."
- [16:05] * Valnar_Quartzheart "And I'll give you a wound that will never heal."
- [16:07] <Daroskt> Kwava nods, turning to lead the party away. He takes them north out of the boneyard to a copse of trees just south of the burying grounds. Here, a simple tent and a cookfire are visible. Ganmeed perches herself in a nearby tree, while Kwava seats himself near the fire. He offers the party some fruit and cooked venison, and lays the wererat's effects at their feet
- [16:07] <Daroskt> Atop the pile is a stained, folded piece of paper.
- [16:09] * Katarina leans down to the wererat's effects, taking a quick glance at all of the items before taking and opening the folded paper.
- [16:11] <Daroskt> The paper reads: "My trusty trout Old Stumpy's sending provender up Boneyard. They’ll be dunny lie at tomorrow’s darkman. Give them all the crash. Don’t try to grab any for your birds. Keep the dummees. The rest of the iron on earnest of the hush and ye’ll hie the ken." -Z
- [16:11] * Daroskt glances at the paper and blinks, "What sort of gibberish is this?"
- [16:14] * Katarina scratches her head in confusion, passing the paper to either Daroskt or Valnar, whoever wants to attempt to decipher it.
- [16:16] <Daroskt> Kwava clears his throat; "Now, yesterday, whilst tracking Saul in hopes of finding my target, I caught him meeting with the Wererat called Ziphras, wherein I witnessed the planning of this ambush. I went to lay in wait in the hopes of both keeping your from harm, and recruiting your aid."
- [16:19] * Katarina sighs. "I-I didn't th-think S-saul w-would do th-this..."
- [16:19] * Valnar_Quartzheart "You finally coming to your senses girl?"
- [16:20] * Daroskt snorts, "Enough of this. You make outrageous claims about our benefactor, appear to us in the midst of an ambush claiming to be a friend, and have not one shred of proof to any of your claims."
- [16:20] * Valnar_Quartzheart nods and agrees with Daroskt, "Aye, What he said."
- [16:22] <Daroskt> Kwava shrugs, "Then you are welcome to return to Saul in the morning if you will not see the truth. However, I wager you will find only swords pointed at you upon your return. If you do not believe me now, I imagine you will upon confronting him."
- [16:23] * Valnar_Quartzheart "And how am I to know that you won't do the same?"
- [16:23] * Katarina shakes her head again. "No. I-I /didn't/ th-think th-that Saul w-would... b-but he d-did. I kn-know h-he isn't l-lying..." She frowns." E-everything h-he t-told us w-was t-told to me b-by Lady P-pamodae."
- [16:23] * Daroskt turns to Katarina, "What? The Abbess of the House of the Silken Veil?"
- [16:24] * Katarina nods sheepishly. "Y-yes."
- [16:25] * Valnar_Quartzheart "How are we to know that this wasn't some elaborate set up by a crimelord to bring us out here, gain trust in one of his lieutenants and then kill Saul so that they can be rid of him."
- [16:26] * Daroskt nods, "Couldn't have said it better myself. We -know- that Zincher and Croat both have an interest in Saul's demise, but you we know nothing about."
- [16:27] * Katarina frowns, practically flailing the note in front of Valnar's face, wanting him to attempt to read it.
- [16:27] * Valnar_Quartzheart swats it away, "Damn thing means nothing."
- [16:27] <Katarina> "J-just r-read it! I-I c-can't, m-maybe you c-can!"
- [16:28] * Valnar_Quartzheart grumbles, "Fine, give it here."
- [16:29] * Katarina does so!
- [16:30] * Daroskt discreetly tries to see if Katarina has been enchanted at all by something
- [16:30] <Daroskt> There is no magic currently in effect on Katarina beyond the enchantments on her items
- [16:30] * Valnar_Quartzheart throws it back at Katarina, "What did I tell ye, Damned thing means notin."
- [16:31] * Katarina whimpers, looking to Kwava hopefully. "C-can y-you r-read it?"
- [16:31] * Daroskt places a hand on Katarina, "For all we know, it's his note."
- [16:32] * Katarina sighs. "F-fine. Th-then l-let's see wh-what Saul m-makes of th-these claims."
- [16:32] <Daroskt> Kwava holds up his hands, "I could, but I do not think that would be enough to convince your friends. If seeing it for themselves is the only thing that will prove it, then so be it. I only advise you to return to the Gold Goblin prepared."
- [16:34] * Valnar_Quartzheart looks to Katarina, "I don't know what is going on in your head, but you better sort it out quick."
- [16:35] * Katarina nods to Kwava muttering, "S-sorry." She gives Valnar a glare before turning and heading for the Gold Goblin, whether the other two followed or not.
- [16:35] * Katarina stops to pick up the note before leaving.
- [16:35] * Valnar_Quartzheart walked behind Katarina, wondering if maybe she knew what was really going on.
- [16:36] * Valnar_Quartzheart knew that he couldn't trust the elf though.
- [16:37] * Daroskt looks to Valnar, "Nothing is wrong with her head, I checked, but somethign is definitely fishy here." He looks to Katarina, "Wait. If you are so certain, then, if only for the sake of the off chance, we should play this safe. We can go in the morning when I've recovered the powers granted to me by Gozreh."
- [16:38] * Katarina sighs and stops. "Fine. Th-then, w-we'll s-set up camp h-here?"
- [16:39] * Valnar_Quartzheart looks to Daroskt, "And how do you know that his magic is more powerful than anything you can detect?"
- [16:39] * Valnar_Quartzheart "Isn't more powerful i mean."
- [16:40] * Daroskt shakes his head, "Not here, not near that elf." He looks to Valnar, "The power of any opposing magic would only factor into attempting to remove it, not detecting it." Looking back to Katarina, "We need somewhere safe to stay for an evening."
- [16:40] * Katarina isn't taking well to Valnar implying she might be enchanted, or not to be trusted, considering leaving for Saul now.
- [16:42] * Katarina shakes her head and walks past both Daroskt and Valnar, back to Kwava's camp. "C-can I s-set u-up f-for th-the night h-here?" she asks, looking to the elf. She does this more because of the implication that she may not be trusted, than to prove a point.
- [16:42] * Daroskt shakes his head at Valnar, "Katarina I know I can trust, just not this elf. I had hoped Vancaskerkin trustworthy as well, but Katarina has called that into question." He sighs as she storms off
- [16:43] <Daroskt> Kwava nods, "You are welcome, if you need a temporary haven, though your friends seem less inclined."
- [16:44] * Katarina sighs. "A-again, s-sorry..." She sets out her sleeping bag, handing Kwava back his bow. "A-almost f-forgot..."
- [16:44] * Daroskt steps up next to Katarina, "If she stays, I stay, if only to make sure she remains safe."
- [16:45] <Katarina> "I-I'm K-katarina, by th-the way." She shakes her head at Daroskt, not liking that he was being so untrusting to someone that potentially saved them.
- [16:46] * Valnar_Quartzheart walks back to Daroskt and talks to him so that no one else can hear, "It is not that I dont trust the girl, its just that she is putting Saul in question, and trusting someone that we just met, and distrusting someone that me and you have known for months."
- [16:47] * Daroskt looks to Valnar, "I don't like it either, but Katarina is our friend, and I will not abandon her. As well, she has good intuition, and is favoured by a Goddess of fortune. While I still believe there may be deception at work, if she says the elf is not the one doing the decieving, then I shall believe that until shown otherwise."
- [16:48] * Valnar_Quartzheart "Bah, Damned world's going mad."
- [16:48] * Katarina sighs and takes off her armor, placing it and her equipment next to her bedroll before slipping in and closing her eyes.
- [16:49] * Valnar_Quartzheart sits down next to daroskt, "Should we take shifts in staying awake to make sure the elf does not do anything to harm us?"
- [16:49] <Daroskt> Kwava shakes the hand, "I am Kwava, as I said, representative of the Shin'Rakorath, 'Lantern Bearers' in the common tongue. Our goal is simply to act as a light shining against the darkness of the world."
- [16:49] * Daroskt sighs, "Much as I would like to take a shift, I need to rest for eight hours and take another for meditation in order to be properly prepared."
- [16:51] * Valnar_Quartzheart "Then I shall see you in Death's pass my friend."
- [16:52] * Daroskt looks to Chip, "Chip, keep an eye on the Elf, and take turns with Valnar so he can get some rest. Squeal if he tries anything."
- [16:52] <Daroskt> The boar moinks affirmatively and would salute if he had hands
- [16:53] * Valnar_Quartzheart nods with the boar.
- [16:54] <Daroskt> The night passes. The only thing either Valnar or Chip notices is that, for about four hours, the Elf, as opposed to sleeping, goes into a trance-like state.
- [16:58] * Katarina yawns as the day breaks and the night passes, getting up from her bedroll and quickly slipping into her gear. She looks to the others to check if they are awake.
- [16:58] * Daroskt awakes and looks around, seeing his friends all intact. He nods to the Elf, who is watching the surrounding area. "Well, we passed the night unharmed, so it seems you're worthy of at least a small amount of trust. Though I must say I still believe you have been decieved by one of Saul's enemies."
- [16:59] <Daroskt> Kwava looks to Daroskt, "You are of course entitled to believe what you will, but why would Vancaskerkin send you out here into the middle of an ambush?"
- [17:00] * Katarina simply shakes her head at Daroskt and waits on the fringe of the camp, ready to leave.
- [17:00] * Daroskt assumes a meditative stance and, before closing his eyes, "Informants can also be misled."
- [17:03] * Valnar_Quartzheart only grumbles as he does trust the elf a bit more, but won't admit it.
- [17:03] <Daroskt> Chip eats some of the offered fruit from Kwava for breakfast
- [17:04] * Katarina eats some of her trail rations while waiting.
- [17:05] * Valnar_Quartzheart "What do you have for breakfast?"
- [17:05] <Daroskt> Kwava points to the leftover venison
- [17:05] * Valnar_Quartzheart "Any drink?"
- [17:05] * Valnar_Quartzheart walks to the Venison and begins to eat as much as he can.
- [17:05] <Daroskt> Kwava nods and produces a wineskin, tossing it to the dwarf.
- [17:06] * Valnar_Quartzheart drinks as much as he can.
- [17:07] <Daroskt> Kwava chuckles, "You've a very hearty appetite dwarf. What was your name?"
- [17:09] * Valnar_Quartzheart smiles a bit, and wipes away the left over wine on his beard, "Valnar" Smakes his chest as he begins to say the next sentance, "Valnar Quartzheart, and I must say elf, you showed no signs of hostility towards me or my friends, I apologize for my behaviour earlier," walks over to the elf and gives him a hug.
- [17:10] <Daroskt> Ganmeed lands near Chip, making a meal out of a snatched rat.
- [17:10] <Daroskt> Kwava blinks as he is hugged, "Ah... well, you are forgiven. As I said, I realized the dubiousness of my position, but I spoke only the truth as I have witnessed it."
- [17:13] * Daroskt comes out of his meditations after an hour, juiced up with druidic goodness. "What magic I have been granted is prepared. Curious that on this day I seem to have been granted an additional stretch of power to make use of."
- [17:13] * Valnar_Quartzheart lets go of the elf, "Bah, damned world is still mad, But it's much better with friends that we can trust." looks back to Katarina and Daroskt and smiles.
- [17:14] * Katarina is still on the edge of the camp, looking towards the city and ready to go.
- [17:15] * Valnar_Quartzheart walks over to Daroskt and gives him a big hug, and attempts to catch Katarina in the same hug.
- [17:15] * Daroskt nods and stands up, suddenly caught by the hug, "Your affections are as firm as ever Valnar."
- [17:16] * Katarina is still a tad angry at Valnar for calling her trustfulness into question, and backs away in an attempt to not be hugged.
- [17:16] * Valnar_Quartzheart "Bah, you like it, don't try and tell me otherwise."
- [17:16] * Daroskt shrugs and waits to be released.
- [17:16] <Daroskt> Chip seems to find the whole hug situation amusing, and lets out what sounds liek a chortle
- [17:17] * Valnar_Quartzheart lets Daroskt down, and fails to get Kat into a hug, walks over to Chip and gives him a hug as well, "Don't worry little one, I didn't forget about you."
- [17:18] <Daroskt> Chip moinks and licks the dwarf's face
- [17:19] * Daroskt gathers up his things and stands up. "It is time to see who is truly decieving us. Once I find out who, they shall sorely regret it." He pulls out his blade and checks its edge. "I will not be fooled again."
- [17:20] * Katarina nods and heads out, bow still slung over her shoulder.
- [17:20] * Valnar_Quartzheart lets the boar down, "Again?"
- [17:21] * Daroskt puts his sword away and heads back into town. He looks back to Valanr, "Aye, again." He says nothing more and steels his face. Whoever was truly at the heart of this deception, be it some renegade elf, Zincher or even the wererat boss, they would have their lies exposed today and pay for them.
- [17:22] * Valnar_Quartzheart follows the group, and even though Katarina escaped this hug, he knew that she wouldn't escape the next one, which he planned to do soon.
- [17:23] <Daroskt> As the party makes their way back into the city, it is a beautiful clear day, with the sky unmared by clouds save for the everpresent looming of the blot. Which makes it all the stranger when something small falls from the sky and lands in front of them.
- [17:24] * Katarina tilts her head and looks to the object.
- [17:26] <Daroskt> The object in question at first looks like hail, but a closer inspection reveals a porpous bit of black rock that is otherwise unidentifiable. This first falling bit of 'black hail' is shortly followed by more, clattering away against rooftops and windows.
- [17:26] * Daroskt raises a hand above his brow, "What manner of ill omen is this?"
- [17:27] * Valnar_Quartzheart only shrugs.
- [17:28] * Katarina frowns and continues onward, thinking it to be another symptom of the blot. She was eager to confront Saul, hoping perhaps her suspicions are unfounded.
- [17:29] <Daroskt> For about two minutes, the hailstones remain small and do no noticeable damage. However, after that they get bigger, cracking shingles, breaking windows and pelting those outside. A coupld of street children run for cover, while a strange looking woman in a black and white mask simply stands nearby and observes the black hail, the pellets bouncing off some magical barrier around her.
- [17:32] <Daroskt> Daroskt and Katarina manage to duck out of the way of any damage from the Hailstones, but a large one catches Valnar in the face
- [17:33] * Daroskt stoops over to pick up one of the stones.
- [17:34] <Daroskt> The stone evaporates before Daroskt can discern any of its properties
- [17:34] <Daroskt> Meanwhile, the masked woman has vanished
- [17:34] * Katarina looks to another stone and picks one up, inspecting it.
- [17:35] <Daroskt> The stone feels like granite, but is black like obsidian and porous like pumice. It too quickly evaporates. After a few minutes, all of the hailstones have completely disappeared into nothing.
- [17:36] * Katarina raises an eyebrow. "Wh-wha..."
- [17:37] * Daroskt frowns at the freak weather, looking up at the clear sky. "This bodes ill."
- [17:38] * Valnar_Quartzheart "MMM, maybe we should hurry,"
- [17:38] * Katarina nods and continues forward.
- [17:38] * Daroskt looks back to his two companions, "Do either of you have need of supplies before we do this? Being prepared would be a wise precaution."
- [17:38] <Katarina> "N-not m-me."
- [17:39] * Valnar_Quartzheart "No."
- [17:39] * Daroskt nods, "Alright then."
- [17:43] <Daroskt> As the party approaches the Gold Goblin, they can see that the entrance is shut, and all the windows shuttered.
- [17:44] * Katarina looks to the other two. "Sh-should... we j-just knock?"
- [17:45] * Daroskt looks to Katarina, "I see no reason why we shouldn't, we are Saul's capps."
- [17:46] * Valnar_Quartzheart "Bah, let's just wreck their party, and bash in."
- [17:46] * Daroskt raises an eyebrow at Valnar, "Why would we do that? Or do you actually believe Saul was the one who tried to have us killed now?"
- [17:47] * Valnar_Quartzheart "I never said that, Maybe I just want some ale, and I want it really bad."
- [17:47] * Daroskt shakes his head, "No, we go in, and we simply ask Saul. There is no need for any bashing, breaking, or sneaking. Once we speak with Saul, we can trace his informants back to whoever is truly doing the decieving."
- [17:48] * Katarina rolls her eyes and approaches the door, knocking twice and checking if the door is unlocked, though keeping her hand near her sheathed falchion.
- [17:48] <Daroskt> The door is locked.
- [17:49] * Katarina calls out, knocking again, "S-saul?"
- [17:50] <Daroskt> Katarina hears a window rattle, followed by shuffling movements inside.
- [17:50] <Katarina> "Th-there're i-in there..."
- [17:51] * Katarina knocks again, hoping for a response.
- [17:51] * Daroskt raises an eyebrow, "Who is?"
- [17:51] <Daroskt> There is no response
- [17:51] * Valnar_Quartzheart simply stands next to his friends and waits for something to happen.
- [17:52] <Katarina> "D-don't know, b-but I c-can here sh-shuffling..."
- [17:52] * Daroskt frowns, growling: "Why aren't they letting us in?"
- [17:53] * Valnar_Quartzheart smiles "Maybe it is a surprise party."
- [17:53] * Daroskt growls, "Or maybe we have been played for fools. Valnar, break it down. I will have answers now."
- [17:53] * Valnar_Quartzheart smiles again, "Gladly."
- [17:54] * Valnar_Quartzheart pulls out his axe and begins swinging.
- [17:55] <Daroskt> Valnar's first swing cuts a nasty gash in the double-wide doors, nearly splintering the bar holding the door shut.
- [17:55] * Daroskt pulls out his Scimitar, looking livid.
- [17:57] * Daroskt grunts to Valnar, "Again!"
- [17:58] * Valnar_Quartzheart readys himself as he swings again.
- [17:59] * Daroskt looks to Katarina, "Do you think someone trie to occupy the place while we were called away?" He is looking quite furious, mainly because of the possible alternate explanation that he does not want to believe.
- [17:59] * Katarina shrugs and draws her bow. "I-I'm... n-not s-sure..."
- [18:00] <Daroskt> The door caves in with a second might crash from Valnar's axe, revealing the same gambling floor that had always been there."
- [18:00] <Daroskt> Standing in the middle of that floor, near the podium, are four of the Gold Goblin's bouncers, club or shortsword in each of their hands.
- [18:01] * Katarina looks to each. "W-we m-mean n-no harm. W-we just w-want to talk t-to Saul."
- [18:01] * Daroskt pushes forcibly through the wreckage of the door, and glowers at the bouncers, "Put those away, now!"
- [18:02] <Daroskt> One of the bouncers calls back, "Get out! You're no longer welcome here. Saul told us all the truth. You've been working for Zincher this whle time!"
- [18:02] * Valnar_Quartzheart smiles and looks at the bouncers, and frowns.
- [18:03] * Katarina blinks. "N-no w-we haven't!" She stops her foot. "S-saul's l-lying!"
- [18:04] <Daroskt> The bouncers keep their weapons out.
- [18:04] * Daroskt roars furiously. "VANCASKERKIN! I TRUSTED YOU!!"
- [18:06] * Katarina looks to the bouncers frowning. "P-please...m-move aside."
- [18:07] <Daroskt> The bouncers don't move, and have their weapons pointed at Daroskt after that loud declaration that only seemed to confirm their opposition.
- [18:08] * Katarina sighs and draws two arrows from her quiver, firing them towards two of the bouncers.
- [18:09] <Daroskt> One bouncer on either side of the podium is dropped by an arrow hard.
- [18:10] * Katarina drops her bow, charging to the other two bouncers as she draws her falchion.
- [18:13] * Valnar_Quartzheart charges forward with his shield and axe in hand, and moves in front of the bouncers.
- [18:16] <Daroskt> A trio of arrows fly down from the rafters, two of them striking Daroskt hard. One buries itself deep in his chest, and the other sticks in his stomach.
- [18:18] * Daroskt gags as he's staggered heavily by the arrows. "Katarina! Catwalks!"
- [18:20] * Daroskt was about to go charging past the guards in search of Saul, but has to stop and heal himself first if he's going to make Saul pay for his deception.
- [18:22] * Katarina calls back to Daroskt, "G-get d-down!"
- [18:22] <Daroskt> The bouncers don't want to try their luck against Valnar's impressive armour, but attempt to move around him and get to the seriously injured Daroskt in order to finish him off.
- [18:23] * Katarina attempts to stop the bouncer closest to her, slashing with her falchion.
- [18:25] <Daroskt> Katarina manages to cleave her target in two, but Valnar just misses his swing.
