  1. [04:33:21] Juggernaut667 > sup paul
  2. [04:33:30] Paul Tagg > got time for it questions?
  3. [04:33:40] Juggernaut667 > sure
  4. [04:34:07] Paul Tagg > im fairly confident i removed all the virus's from the harddrive
  5. [04:34:34] Paul Tagg > but its now autorestarting rightbefore the logon screen
  6. [04:34:55] Juggernaut667 > okay, that's the boot partition then
  7. [04:35:01] Paul Tagg > as in you see the windows icon, that animates, and then restarts
  8. [04:35:05] Juggernaut667 > you need to run startup repair from the win 7 disc
  9. [04:35:15] Paul Tagg > it doesnt work though
  10. [04:35:30] Paul Tagg > it keeps saying nothing is wrong
  11. [04:35:50] Juggernaut667 > okay, then try running it manually
  12. [04:36:35] Juggernaut667 > put the win7 disc in and get to WinRE, and then choose to repair the computer, at the screen with the "startup repair" option should also be a command prompt icon at the bottom
  13. [04:36:46] Paul Tagg > whats the command, the bootmbr command doesnt work
  14. [04:36:59] Paul Tagg > the one you used for xp doesnt work with 7
  15. [04:37:15] Juggernaut667 > no, this is a method i've used for 7 also
  16. [04:37:41] Juggernaut667 > from here, you should be able to start Diskpart and view all the partitions and volumes on the drive
  17. [04:37:58] Juggernaut667 > make sure that the correct volume is active and labeled as C:
  18. [04:38:04] Juggernaut667 > exit diskpart
  19. [04:39:20] Juggernaut667 > then run bootrec.exe
  20. [04:39:40] Juggernaut667 > if you just run bootrec.exe, you should be presented with options for what you want to repair
  21. [04:39:51] Juggernaut667 > they'll be command line modifiers
  22. [04:40:07] Juggernaut667 > so, for the bcd, you'd type "bootrec.exe /rebuildbcd"
  23. [04:40:52] Juggernaut667 > you may have to run this utility a few times to find out exactly what's wrong
  24. [04:41:05] Juggernaut667 > you can also run bootrec.exe /fixmbr
  25. [04:41:21] Juggernaut667 > but if you see anything starting to boot, that's probably not the issue
  26. [04:41:31] Juggernaut667 > there's an option for bootrec.exe /fixboot
  27. [04:41:47] Juggernaut667 > that might be the one you want, as there's something obviously wrong with the boot partition
  28. [04:42:26] Paul Tagg > ok its booting into the cd right now,
  29. [04:42:46] Juggernaut667 > and if all else fails, copy everything off the drive, format the disk and reinstall windows fresh
  30. [04:43:08] Paul Tagg > whats nice is they gave me the drivers disc
  31. [04:43:23] Juggernaut667 > at a certain point, you have to cut your losses, as every problem isn't fixable, sometimes you just have to bite the bullet and start over
  32. [04:43:33] Paul Tagg > but space is a premium right now, on my discs, and i know
  33. [04:43:53] Juggernaut667 > i'd run all of the bootrec.exe commands, and if that all fails, copy everything you can off and reinstall
  34. [04:44:22] Juggernaut667 > if you can't get the files off, you can use Diskpart to create an additional partition on the drive
  35. [04:44:49] Juggernaut667 > and then reinstall windows on the new partition and pull the files over from the other one once you've got it up and running
  36. [04:45:16] Paul Tagg > so sort of like mass copy paste
  37. [04:45:33] Juggernaut667 > yeah. if you can't fix it that's what you'll have to do.
  38. [04:45:44] Juggernaut667 > if you've got room off the drive, definately get the files off the drive first
  39. [04:45:56] Juggernaut667 > if you absolutely can't do that, create a new partition
  40. [04:46:21] Juggernaut667 > the reason not to do the paritition if you don't have to is that there are a lot of ways that can go bad through no fault of your own
  41. [04:46:26] Juggernaut667 > then you lose the old files
  42. [04:50:27] Paul Tagg > thanks for the help jug
  43. [04:50:36] Juggernaut667 > any time
  44. [04:51:28] Paul Tagg > now to wait for it to do the startuprepair bs
  45. [04:51:37] Paul Tagg > which will take 40 minutes
