  1. Kisekae is not art.
  2. Now now, hear me out. Art is subjective.
  3. If your definition of art is drawing, whether it be with pen on paper or a wacom tablet, Kisekae is most definitely not.
  4. If your definition of art is as follows;
  5. "noun
  6. 1.
  7. the expression or application of human creative skill and imagination, typically in a visual form such as painting or sculpture, producing works to be appreciated primarily for their beauty or emotional power."
  8. Then you would be correct, Kisekae is in fact art. You create it, even though aided by a flash application you are still creating visual work that stems from your head.
  9. But do you know where the problem lies?
  10. When people, often young people who may not know better, argue about how Kisekae is art... they are not going off of that definition. They are going off of "art is drawing". They are not referring to Kisekae as art in the way that it is a creative medium you can pour your ideas into, they're simply referring to it as art in the context of "This is my art. I drew this. It's just as welcome as any other drawing on this website."
  11. Kisekae, at its core, is Pochikou's art. Of course, over the years dozens of hundreds of thousands of props, mods have been created for it, many of which have been hand-drawn, but chances are 90% of your Kisekae image is going to be drawn by Pochikou. He drew the parts, you merely assembled them. Unless you're one of those who spend hours editing their work until it doesn't even look like a Kisekae picture, chances are you're not going to be drawing a lot yourself even if you do decide to edit it.
  12.
  13. Kisekae is art, in the sense that it's expression of human creative skill. Kisekae is not art in the sense that you drew it.
  14.
  15. And there's no problem with this. The problem lies in many people who think the game is a quick way to "git gud" at deviantART and construct a gallery full of dress-up game pictures and think that it's their own drawn art, just because the game isn't as simple as something you'd find on say, DollDivine or Rinmaru. They end up with giant, inflated egos who have to fall into hiatus for months due to losing access to their laptop, or Flash, or whatever they'd need to run Kisekae, because instead of mingling with the dA community to practice their drawing skills and improve, they simply stick to Kisekae and see it as an "easy way" to build their "brand" and flaunt "Professional Artist" in their bio when they're not even posting art to their account in the first place because it would disrupt the flow of their Kisekae-ridden gallery.
  16. Artists, please separate your Kisekae work from your drawn work as early as you can. It will do you a whole lot of good. You don't have to, but it will certainly help if you plan on doing both in the long run and don't want the problem of all your "commissions" just being people who want you to draw their Kisekae OCs for free.
  17.
  18. I have nothing against Kisekae. The community has iffed me on many occasions but do I show disdain towards the game itself? Absolutely not. Not only is it a great way to burn time, it helps me visualise my characters when I'm say, not in a good state to draw. Other times, it's just for fun. It's amazingly fun and I'm proud to have been a part of this circle for over four years.
  19. I just... wish it hadn't set me back so far as an artist.
  20. No matter what I did, people only wanted Kisekae from me. They came for the Kisekae and stayed for the Kisekae. That's the problem with building your gallery out of Kisekae upon Kisekae because the second you want to branch out, you lose 20 watchers because people just want Kisekae instead of actual drawn work you poured hours into! Whenever I made an art account it would be watched by a few Kisekae users and then all of a sudden, nobody could discover my art anymore because the "More from deviantART" section was just Kisekae images. I would put warnings in my profile saying I would block any Kisekae user on sight because I didn't want my art to solely be associated with the game, and that if you were a Kisekae user please, please for the love of God don't watch me.
  21. And you know what? I got called a bully. Because I wanted to preserve my own brand, because I wanted to have an account that people would actually discover and want to commission and not associate with a dress-up game.
  22.
  23. If you make good Kisekae, people will only ever want Kisekae from you unless they're close open-minded friends. You continue to fall deeper into the rabbit hole that is the Kisekae community until you can remember each god damn hair option by its number and know all the leg poses off by heart.
  24.
  25. But that's just my silly opinion, probably made no sense at all and is gonna make a lot of people angry at me but hey.
  26. Kisekae's a pretty damn good creative outlet, just stop fooling people who come to your account knowing none-the-better that you actually drew it. That's a dick move.
