  51. Saigō Takamori had successfully led his rebellion in managed to force the Imperial forces to fall back to the Northern Daimyos but with every successive victory more Samurais and their Lords joined Saigō eventually forcing the Meiji into Surrendering to the Rebels. Once the defeat was finalized the terms of the agreement would go forth. Saigō laid out the terms of return of the Traditional Shogunate and Imperial Family. They also forced out all Western foreigners returning to a more traditional way of living. Though after the war Saigō had no love leading or being a ruler of any sort so he became a Ronin with his comrades Beppu Shinsuke, and his Deputies Kirino and Murata. They would spend their days travelling the countryside protecting the citizens of the Satsuma Domain. But even with all their work eventually Meiji traditionalists would trickle in and began to pervert the Way of Bushio and the Samurai once more. As Saigō had become disconnected to the world at large as a Ronin he was unaware of the return of the Meiji. The formerly young Emperor who had been already tainted with the Ideals of the Meiji happily welcomed his old allies back into his Empire.
  52. Soon the Meiji plotted and schemed upon how they would take back the lands from the Samurai. The main force they feared was Saigō he had bested them once. They wouldn’t allow it happen again. As Saigō returned from his journey to his hometown he found it ablaze. The sound of Musket rifles and the acrid scent of gunpowder filled the air. His comrades rushed to his side as they began to systematically slay each Soldier they found in the village. After the inferno settled and the ashes filled the sky he understood what was happening. The Meiji had returned in secret with somebody’s blessings. He had faith the Emperor would be an honorable man and wouldn’t have anything to do with this. So his trusted comrades and he traveled to Tokyo on foot; certain the Spies of Meiji stalked them in the night. As they entered the Capital city they found it eerily muted. The energy of the market missing, the laughter of the children gone, in that moment they realized they had walked into a trap. But Saigō would have answers and justice. As they delved into the City they were swiftly beset by marksmen forcing the men to split their forces. Beppu with his lord; Kirino and Murata on the other side. Slowly but surely the two forces of Samurai fury cut a bloody swath to the Imperial court. Meiji warriors laid strewn behind them. The four comrades stepped forth suspecting the enemy would be densest here. Saigō was of the mind the Meiji had captured the Emperor and were doing as they pleased now and so they continued their journey into the gaping maws of Hell itself.
  53. They had finally made it to the Throne room where they found the Emperor Meiji flanked by foreigners. It was in this moment Saigō understood his folly. He had blindly hoping Emperor Meiji hadn’t been corrupted by the Westerners. His men were swiftly cut down in a hail fire of Riflemen. Saigō watched as his loyal comrades and brothers were slaughtered by his folly. He let loose a final war cry and rushed the Emperor seeking the at least kill the root of the corruption. But it was not meant to be. A well placed shot through his hip pierced his artery and knocked him to the floor.
  54. The Emperor wouldn’t let the Rebel commander die so easily though. He had Saigō saved to only force him to watch each Daimyo that refused to kneel to the Emperor be slaughtered to the man. As Saigō fell into despair he wished to go back and take on the role of the Shogun. Too keep an eye on Meiji and preserve the true nature of Japan. As the last flickers of Bushido flickered from the Citizens Emperor Meiji returned Saigō his blade and simply said “You are the Last True Samurai Saigō all of this is your failure. Do what you must as a Samurai to regain your honor.” The Rebel general would commit Seppuku with grave bitterness knowing Emperor Meiji hadn’t been wrong…if he hadn’t been so selfish he could’ve stopped it all before it had gone too far. But now all he had was the feeling of burning in his abdomen as he eviscerated himself to salvage what honor he had left. As Saigō collapsed so ended the age of Bushido and the Samurai, with him the final embers of the old w
