- “The last Metroid is in captivity. The galaxy is at peace.”
- Featured In:
- Listed in chronological order:
- Metroid/Metroid: Zero Mission (a remake of the original), Metroid Prime, Metroid Prime Hunters, Metroid Prime 2: Echoes, Metroid Prime 3: Corruption, Metroid II: Return of Samus, Super Metroid, Metroid: Other M, and Metroid Fusion.
- Name:
- Samus Aran.
- Age:
- Early to mid-twenties.
- Gender:
- Female.
- Alignment:
- Neutral Good.
- Personality:
- Samus often seems dispassionate and emotionally detached, sparing few words for those she doesn’t know well. This is mainly due to her emotional trauma at the hands of Ridley and his Space Pirates as a child, but also because her complete focus is needed to maintain her Power Suit. Over time, this need for emotional control has bled into her normal personality, giving her a cold disposition even when out of battle. Beneath the tough outer shell, though, lies a brooding and depressed individual who has been forced to live through more traumas than one can count, including the death of her friend and father figure, Adam Malkovich. Because of this and similar deaths, Samus often feels the need to not attach herself to anyone, and to protect those she is attached to, almost to the point of obsession. In fact, her emotional detachment is a symptom of her Posttraumatic Stress Disorder, which tends to manifest in various ways and severities, ranging from total petrification, to extreme rage, to strong depression or anywhere in between. However, this affliction, like most with PTSD, tends to only surface when faced with the cause of her trauma, or strong reminders of it.
- Despite her generally stoic demeanor, Samus is capable of empathy and compassion, as seen when she decided to spare the baby Metroid she encountered on SR388, and her ensuing grief over its sacrifice when facing Mother Brain. She cares about people, and isn’t just a money-grubbing bounty hunter. She generally only works for those of decent morality, or simply if they’re calling for help. She doesn't relish killing, but believes that some don’t deserve to live for their crimes, especially seen in her raging vengeance against the Space Pirates. And, being a bounty hunter, killing is simply a natural part of the job. She also seems to be more interested in strange bounty offers, even going so far as to accept a job from a Space Pirate, mainly because of the sheer novelty of her greatest enemies asking for her help. She also follows her own sense of morality, choosing it over following laws in most circumstances, particularly when it comes to messing with things she believes beyond a person’s control, such as when she destroyed the BSL research station and SR388 against orders from the Galactic Federation.
- Overall, Samus is not a fearless killing machine, nor is she an overly-emotional wreck. She’s a person just like everyone else, albeit one who has been through more traumatic experiences than most. She is capable of feeling and showing every range of emotion, but generally only allows herself show her emotions and talk more to people whom she knows well and cares about. She does care about people though, even if she doesn’t know them, and will keep them out of harm’s way whenever she can.
- Powers
- - Thanks to her infusion of Chozo DNA, Samus is slightly beyond the peak of human strength and agility.
- - Due to her partially Metroid DNA, she has a weakness to cold and ice-based attacks. A later upgrade can protect her from this, although only while in her Suit.
- - Samus can materialize her Fusion Suit at will, but it requires complete emotional control to keep it on. If she falls unconscious whiler her Suit is still active, a security measure will kick in and keep it on.
- Abilities:
- - Samus has been extensively trained in fighting techniques, athletics, marksmanship, and battle tactics. This makes her a difficult opponent even without her Suit.
- - Because of her training-increased reaction time, as well as because of some of the innate, if very lessened, precognitive abilities in her infused Chozo DNA, Samus is able to execute a maneuver called the SenseMove. She anticipates her enemies’ attack, and nimbly dodges, often leaving her in a position for a strong counterattack.
- - The Suit itself has the majority of her skills. See “Equipment” for details.
- Appearance:
- Overall, she has fair, Caucasian skin and green eyes that sometimes appear blueish in a certain light. Her light blonde hair is usually pulled back into a long ponytail. Naturally, because of her years of extensive training she is muscular, although she appears to have more muscle tone than muscle mass, keeping a slim appearance.
- Civilian clothing: Samus often wears her civilian outfit over her Zero Suit, so she can always be prepared for battle.

- Fusion Suit 3: When she acquires new, specific types of upgrades, the appearance of her Suit may change.

- Weapons:
- Arm Cannon: As its name implies, the Arm Cannon is attached to and takes up all of Samus’ right forearm when in her Fusion Suit. It is her primary weapon, and houses all types of her Beams and Missiles. Because of the damage done to her Arm Cannon when she was attacked and overwhelmed by Heartless, her Beams can no longer “stack” like previous adventures. Instead, she has to switch between them for specific situations using hand positions for each one.
- -- Power Beam: The Power Beam is Samus’s basic shot type, the one always equipped with her Power Suit no matter what its state. It can fire single weak shots very rapidly or, in a Beam type attached to the Power Beam, charge a more powerful shot called the Charge Beam. The Charge Beam can also be used in conjunction with other Beam types, although the effects of the charged shot varies. The hand position for the Power Beam is a flat palm, with the fingers together.
- -- Wave Beam: The Wave Beam fires an electrical shot, which is colored purple and undulates inwards and outwards. Although it has a slower rate of fire than the Power Beam, the Wave Beam’s shots have a homing capability. When charged, the Wave Beam fires a single, more powerful shot that homes in on enemies, and can stun them for a short time. Stronger enemies will break out of the stun effect faster, or may resist it entirely. The hand position for the Wave Beam is a flat palm, with the fingers spread out. LOCKED
- -- Ice Beam: The Ice Beam is exactly as its name implies, a Beam that shoots blasts of the ice element, capable of freezing enemies in their tracks when charge, although stronger foes may be able to break out more quickly, or resist the freezing effect entirely. Its rate of fire is comparable to that of a shotgun, and is therefore very slow. However, both the normal and charged shots are moderately more powerful than the Power and Wave Beams. Also, due to Metroids’ weakness to cold and ice, this is one of Samus’ favored weapons. Unfortunately, due to her own partially Metroid DNA, Samus cannot use the ice beam without the Omega Suit. The hand position for the Ice Beam is the middle and ring fingers curled inwards, with the thumb, index, and pinky fingers pointing outwards. LOCKED
- -- Plasma Beam: The Plasma Beam is a heat-based weapon, capable of melting ice and other frozen substances. This Beam fires a straight laser, which can set enemies aflame when charged for continuous damage. However, the Plasma Beam has a much shorter range than other Beams, although it gains a bit more when firing a charged shot. However, what the Beam lacks in range, it makes up for in power, possibly the most powerful out of all three of the basic elemental Beams. Its rate of fire is also almost on par with the Power Beam. When charged, the Plasma Beam can also be focused, making it into a laser that can be used for cutting through most types of metal, as well as soldering or fusing things, such as circuit boards for repairs. The hand position for the Plasma Beam is the thumb and pinky fingers spread, and the index, middle, and ring fingers pointing forwards and together. LOCKED
- Missile Launcher: An attachment to her Arm Cannon; Samus uses the Missile Launcher to fire various types of Missiles that do more damage than her normal Power Beam, and can be used for demolition purposes. However, her Missiles have limited ammunition. If she runs out, she’ll have to return to her Gunship to restock.
- -- Normal Missile: The basic Missile type that Samus can fire, and is always equipped with her Missile Launcher. It is stronger than a basic shot from her Power Beam, and can home in on enemies. She is capable of carrying a maximum of fifteen Normal Missiles at a time.
- -- Super Missile: The Super Missile is stronger than the normal missile, but is slower, and the homing ability is slightly lessened. It can, however, demolish hardier structures. The maximum amount of Super Missiles that Samus can carry at one time is ten. LOCKED
- -- Seeker Missile: By chargin the Missile Launcher, the Seeker Missile upgrade locks on to five targets, and fires five Normal Missiles at once, each seeking their independent targets. This upgrade, despite it using quite a bit of ammunition, is useful for fighting large swarms of enemies. LOCKED
- Bombs: The Bombs are small explosives that Samus can drop when in her Morph Ball mode. They can be used to destroy certain substances, harm enemies, and even boost Samus into the air when dropped directly beneath her. While the Bombs have infinite ammunition, only three can be dropped in quick succession before they have to recharge. LOCKED
- -- Power Bombs: Power Bombs are very high-ordinance weapons, dropped by Samus in her Morph Ball form. The Power Bomb creates an incredibly high temperature wave of heat, capable of vaporizing most biological substances in the blast radius, as well as utterly destroying certain other non-biological substances. Due to their incredible power, Power Bombs have very limited ammunition, only three at a time, and take some time to recharge between uses. Also, due to the high dangers of using Power Bombs, Samus will only use them in the most dire of situations, and when there isn’t any chance of harming allies. LOCKED
- Screw Attack: One of Samus’ most iconic weapons, the Screw Attack is used by jumping, curling, and somehow jumping again while curled and surrounded by deadly energy, causing high damage to enemies if they are hit by it. However, it is somewhat hard to aim, as it is hard to turn or otherwise move out of a straight path while using the attack. The Screw Attack also allows for a third jump after jumping once while using the Screw Attack. LOCKED
- Paralyzer: When not using her Fusion Suit, the only weapon Samus has available to her is a gray handgun called the Paralyzer. It does little damage, but can stun enemies for a few seconds, and for longer when charged up, as well as overload certain panels to open doors.
- Equipment:
- Zero Suit: The Zero Suit is a tightsuit Samus wears under her Fusion Suit, and is what allows her to control its activation. The Zero Suit provides very little protection in comparison to the Fusion Suit, but does allow for greatly increased agility. The Zero Suit has no other powers or abilities, and is equipped only with the Paralyzer for a weapon.
- Fusion Suit: The Power Suit Samus has is the third one she has obtained throughout her adventures, now called the Fusion Suit due to it being a combination of Chozo and Galactic Federation technology. Due to the X-Parasite’s infection and subsequent removal, it is the weakest of her previous suits. When active, the suit is biologically bonded to her, meaning that it can not be deactivated unless she chooses for it to do so. However, this also means that she is still vulnerable to most forms of radiation, though certain suit features such as Varia and Gravity can lessen this if she happened to choose them for given missions. However, due to the damage done to her suit by the darkness, these features are currently unavailable. The Fusion Suit is equipped with all of Samus' basic weapons and equipment, and can also adapt to just about any technology for upgrades, no matter the origin. It provides protection against ballistics, physical attacks, and has the Oxygen Supply Equipment, which allows her to survive in environments with a lack of, or toxic air for a limited time. The Suit is “put on” via an energy-to-matter reaction that materializes the suit over her Zero Suit. Because of this, her absolute focus is required to maintain the suit.
- -- Varia Suit: An equipable addition to the Fusion Suit, the Varia Suit protects against high temperatures. However, it is still vulnerable to fire or lava. [LOCKED]
- -- Gravity Suit: An equipable addition to her Fusion Suit, the Gravity Suit allows for normal movement in environments with differing gravity, or while under water. LOCKED
- -- Omega Suit: A permanent upgrade to the Fusion Suit, the Omega Suit increases the defensive capabilities of the Suit, and removes Samus’ weakness to cold and ice while wearing it. LOCKED
- Morph Ball: The Morph Ball is one of the basic pieces of equipment attached to Samus’ Suit. When Samus uses the Morph Ball, she turns into a sphere about a meter in diameter, allowing her to roll through tight spaces. This mode is useful for stealth as well as laying traps for enemies with the Morph Ball’s equipped Bombs (although these are currently one of the weapons that was lost when her suit was damaged by darkness). The Morph Ball also has the ability to do a small jump.
- Speed Booster: After running straight or a moderate amount of time, motorized articulations in the Fusion Suit’s legs get a rush of energy, greatly increasing Samus’ running speed for a limited time, accompanied by her Suit glowing brightly. This allows her to plow through enemies, and even crash through certain substances like ice walls or metal. However, due to the amount of time it takes to charge the Speed Booster, it is very unwieldy, and is also hard to control, meaning that she can only run in a straight line while using it. LOCKED
- -- Shinespark: When using the Speed Booster, Samus can perform a massive leap over horizontal or vertical distances by stopping, crouching, and then quickly jumping in the desired direction. Glowing brightly, Samus will fly for a very large distance, or until she crashes into something like a wall. Hitting an enemy with a Shinespark can cause massive damage, but due to having the charge up the Speed Booster first, and only being able to move in a single direction when using it, Samus will very rarely use it as an attack, and only use it for movement when there is a gap she cannot jump with other means.
- Grapple Beam: The Grapple Beam, unlike other Beams, is not usually used for offense. Instead, it allows Samus to attach the Beam to specific points (identified by her Combat Visor), and swing on them, allowing her to traverse gaps she wouldn’t normally be able to jump over. LOCKED
- --Grapple Lasso: An upgrade to the Grapple Beam, the Grapple Lasso can be used to attach to specific surfaces, and rip them away. This can be used to tear apart weak surfaces, disarm enemies, or even throw the enemies themselves. LOCKED
- Visors: Samus has a variety of different modes for her helmet Visor that assist her in battle and discovering things within the environment. Her Visor can also polarize at will, hiding her face behind a green glow.
- -- Combat Visor: The Combat Visor is Samus’ basic HUD display; showing data such as the amount of Missiles Samus has left, health, weapons and other Visors available for use, a targeting system, and a radar for keeping track of the enemies in her surroundings.
- -- Scan Visor: The Scan Visor allows Samus to discover information about her environment via scanning things around her. She can use this to discover information on items, find clues about her surroundings, look up information on enemies based on their attributes, access information on electronic devices, and remotely activate certain devices. Any important information Samus discovers with her Scan Visor can be saved in her electronic logbook.
- -- Command Visor: The Command Visor allows Samus to remotely control her Gunship, via hand motions. The Gunship can be commanded to do a variety of things, depending on the situation. However, the Command Visor cannot be used while indoors.
- -- X-Ray Visor: The X-Ray Visor can be used to see enemies and objects that would normally be invisible, and since it can see through flesh, identify weapons or items a person may have on them. However, it has a low visibility range, and its monochrome coloring can make it difficult to track enemies.
- Awareness:
- No.
- History:
- Samus was born on the Earth colony, K-2L, and lived with her parents Rodney and Virginia Aran. When she was three years old, the colony was visited by the Chozo, members of a wise, technologically advanced, bird-like people. They had come in hopes that the humans in the colony would allow them to have some of the Afloraltite they mined, a crystal that contained energy they could use to refuel their ships. Although the humans refused, Samus managed to meet one of the Chozo before they left, named Old Bird. The two became friends, the young Samus even referring to Old Bird as “Grandpa”.
- However, soon after Old Bird and the other Chozo left
