Liches, The Bad Guys, and Divination

  1. At midnight, auro and aoife burst into your room and wake you with a start. They tell you that they went into the desert and visited Thrice-Dead in her dreams. They also used divination to ask 5 questions of Musenth. In all they learned:
  2. 1. If you all split up to go after the Red Knight, Movak, Thorin I, and Artur all at once then everyone ends up dead, the lich rises and conquers the golden coast, and undead armies sweep the world.
  3. 2. If auro goes after the Red Knight alone, him and thrice-dead both die.
  4. 3. Stopping Artur does stop the ritual
  5. 4. Only destroying the Red Knight does not stop the lich from being created, nor does only stopping the ritual by Artur
  6. 5. Thrice-Dead is certain she can escape, and is waiting on the right moment.
  7. 6. "Removing one cog does not break the machine"

  9. From Auro's investigations in Zandor:
  10. - The Red Knight is going to Fey's Fall alone with Thrice-Dead as a prisoner
  11. - Artur was asking around about the Shining Star (Tower of Arcana) and ancient ruined temples and cities. He was going to Al-Saldeen (where the tower is). He left with a company of wizards, mercenaries, and a guide.
  12. - Thorin Bloodbeard I was asking about the Temple of Light and is going to Dammi. He left alone.
  13. - Movak is going to Al-Raha and was speaking of High Priestess Mara. He left with a guide and soldiers

  17. Torinn knows you need 6 things to raise a lich:
  18. 1. Channeler - one or more powerful divine magic users or necromancers that channels power into a beacon or conduits
  19.  
  20. 2. Beacon - a structure built in an area suffused with a great concentration of magic. The beacon, if aligned, transfers magic to the conduit(s) or other beacons to reach the ritual site. A beacon amplifies the power put into it, allowing weak channelers to provide greater power than they are capable. They are useful to provide power from a distance, and to allow a weaker cast to provide greater benefit.
  21. Ex: temple, tower, lighthouse, obelisk, mirror (these aren't just -any- structure; they would be important, powerful, or built on a powerful site)

  23. 3. Conduit - one, or more, conduits of magic that transfer power from the beacon to the focus.
  24. Ex: magic obelisks, magical gems, ritual spellcasters gathered in a circle (they inevitably die from raw magic coursing through them)

  26. 4. Focus - an object of great significance that focuses power into the phylactery. Ex: phylactery of a former lich, artifact (not necessarily magical; like an important pharoh's scepter or a magical sword)

  28. 5. Phylactery - a bound object that holds the soul of the lich to be and is the lich's source of power. It is placed atop the vessel or in very close vicinity, such as hung directly above.

  30. 6. Vessel - the body to be risen as a lich (whether killed prior or during the process)

  32. Everything is required except beacons. Beacons are only required if the conduits aren't being fed by (a) channeler(s)
  33. Additionally, beacons are off-site of the ritual. Everything else is all in the same location throughout the ritual.

  37. The greater the power put into the process, the greater the lich's power. This could be a result of more powerful, or more numerous, conduits, channelers, and beacons.

  39. Once everything is in place and put into motion, nothing can stop the lich from being raised short of the vessel or phylactery being destroyed. Removing any of the other factors during the process will only reduce the power transfered into the phylactery. One way or the other, a lich is raised even if its little more than a zombie.

  41. Stopping it from being put into motion in the first place requires removing any/all channeler(s) or somehow preventing the components from reaching the ritual site
