- A bright, optimistic child, Rayther was born in a small coastal city renowned for shipbuilding
- and sailors. Indeed, he was the son of a veteran sailor and dreamed of going out at sea with
- him. One day his father gave in, taking the boy along on a routine shipping route. The trip
- started out fine, with clear skies and calm waters... but halfway out things went horribly
- wrong. A freak storm came out of nowhere, as if it sprung from the depths of the ocean itself.
- Swirling waters pulled the ship in as a massive draconic figure emerged from the sea. The
- ship had been ambushed by a Dragon Eel, and in its wake nothing was left but splintered
- wood and the boy, dazed and half-dead. Despite his state he remembers what happened quite
- clearly. He floated, clutching to driftwood for what seemed like forever until he noticed a
- reptilian shadow dipping in and out of the water, pulling wispy figures from its depths.
- For a moment it turned to him, and started to move closer. It reached out a clawed hand to
- him... and then stopped. It stared him right in the eyes, seeming almost frustrated, like
- something was keeping it from just reaching out and taking him. Then, as quickly as it had
- appeared, it was gone. Not soon afterwards the boy lost consciousness, and washed up on the
- beach of his hometown. There would be no sign of his father. He was very upset by this loss,
- and he and his mother moved inland for a time to live with her own family, who were farmers.
- Ever since that day, he has been plagued by a recurring dream, replaying the events of that
- day over and over. Each time though, something about the scene would change. He would appear
- a little bit older, the Eel seemed to slowly be shifting to something else, the shadow
- would take a different form... he never saw it as a nightmare. He saw it as an endless source
- of frustration. Clearly someone was trying to tell him something, but what? Everything
- seemed to be trying to drive him back to the sea. One morning, he woke up to find a raven
- feather resting outside his window. That was all he could take. He was so tired of these
- forces just toying with him. He just wanted whatever was wanted from him over with. So he
- left the farm and went back to his home, taking up the mantle of his father and carving out
- a name in his own right. And yet the dreams continued, as did the frustration. In recent
- years he's become somewhat bitter, aware that he's gaining on years and still his supposed
- destiny has eluded him...
