We were there when Herbert West was born sweetling, we were there when he died and we were there when he was reborn. All of this took place in the span of 5 of your minutes.
The mid wife Edith Mason had been dismissed by the West family, whispers of witch craft swirled around her like locus. But it was not us who whispered them sweetling Gaia’s honor, it was the villagers.
Edith Mason was the grate granddaughter of Keziah Mason, a witch from Salem and wandering Eye for the illuminati. Edith was but a shadow of her grandmother but was still forced to atone for her grandmothers sins. Her dismissal by the West’s was the final insult. She called the thing back from the outer dark using her own blood, you know this creature as Browni, but at the time he was simply Brown Jenkin.
She sent the creature to collect her wages from the West family, she would have no gold though sweetling only anima. Brown Jenkin crept into the West's home and found Angela West in labor, as soon as the new borne babe had been laid in its crib and the West’s slept, he crept from his hole in the wall and into Herbert's cradle. There was but a quiet whimper when Brown Jenkin drew the light of machine goddess from the babe and replaced it the zero point pathogen before returning to his mistress. You know the stories about changelings right sweetling? This is worse.
Herbert West was a quite boy, studious, well behaved and oh so curious. He had to know how everything worked and one day he wanted to know how mice worked. He caught them in the fields and in the barns of his home town, and then he took them apart. He cut off their legs and tails and examine the bones and muscles with a magnifying glass, he would drive needles through different parts of their skulls to see what would happen. Soon the town had no mice at all, that’s when he turned to the cats. How much could be cut away before they expired? How much blood did a kitty contain? Could the tail of a kitten be made to grow if it was detached? He had so many questions sweetling and not nearly enough cats, that is when he finally turned his eye to the other children.
He was 10 at the time and knew how to manipulate his peers. He lured them into the woods with the promise of games and sweets and then he would tie them to the trees and bleed them for his experiments. One mother found him trying to open her sons belly with a pocket knife. The children were forbidden from playing with Herbert after that. Time past, Herbert grew and soon he found a proper outlet for his morbid fascination…medical school.  You have herd Herbert West’s story before sweetling, the zero point pathogen whispered it into Howards ear as he slept. But you have not heard all of it.
In 1915, a tall, bespectacled man with piercing blue eyes entered a brothel in Boston. A girl with blond hair catches his eye, “how much for an hour?” he asks, “$50, because you have pretty eyes” she replies. She soon regrets her decision, had she known what he wanted she would have screamed for Black Tom. She lays on the floor naked and shivering as a green fluid drains from a puncture mark in her stomach. He leaves the money on her bed stand as he buttons his shirt, “no one will ever believe you” he says as he leaves. In 1919 Herbert West is torn apart by his creations, he leaves his fortune and library to the abomination conceived that night in the brothel and even permits it to bring its care taker with it.
The girl is little more than an automaton now, preparing meals and staring out the windows of the Boston home begging for a death she was denied. The creature that kicked inside her raises itself, a prodigious little girl with her mother’s golden locks and her father’s piercing blue eyes. She never attends school but has a encyclopedic knowledge of biology and medicine, she seldom leaves the house but is fluent in at least a dozen languages, some of which are only spoken in hushed whispers in the upper echelons of the secret world. Her only visitor is a bent old woman and a unseen creature kept in a cat carrier. Time passes and eventually the old woman stops visiting and a young woman emerges from the home, she attends Miskatonic University and is immediately noticed by students and faculty alike. Her professors praise her brilliance and the students praise her beauty, a select few are even invited back to her home. Her visitors are always men, always blond hair and blue eyes, always brilliant and always never seen again. Time passes still, the young woman graduates, she begins to collect degrees and eventually joins the staff of Miskatonic University and is invited to join the children of the eye. She eventually goes on to found the Herbert West institute for the advanced study of molecular biology and then at the age of 45 she vanishes, leaving behind her prestigious life.
Follow us sweetling back to the West home in Boston, in 1957, a new inhabitant is spotted in the house, a little girl with blond hair and blue eyes, looked after by a familiar automaton who silently begs for death. Her story is the same as her mothers, she too is a prodigy and she too is visited by the old woman. She is named Helen West, for her grandfather and like her grandfather she becomes fascinated by the mechanisms that govern your flesh. But unlike her grandfather, we whispered in her ear, we filled her brain pan with anima and she became aware of the secret truths of the world. She summons her family’s familiar from his place in the outer dark… and she begins to modify him. She rewrites its DNA, using techniques that will not become known to the mundane world for another 40 years. She makes it bigger, she gives it the ability to multiply, gives it the ability to change the color of its skin and fur. This creature is no longer the Brown Jenkin known and feared by Kingsport, this new terror is named Browni…a playful name for a deadly creature.
Helens work begins where her grandfather left off, she soon finds that she can use her grandfathers formula to combine the flesh of unrelated creatures into new organisms and that she can use it rewrite the DNA of living creatures. Her studies are hidden from her fellow faculty members at Miskatonic University but others know, the eye knows, the eight headed dragon knows… Nicodemus knows.
An Agent from Orochi is sent to find her, she is told of a substance with properties similar to the formula developed by her grandfather. She is intrigued sweetling, a dangerous sign. We were there when she chose Ricky Pickman for her experiment and we were there when he escaped and we were there when they tried to kill Helen West. As she lay dying in a subway station in New York, she was approached by a British man who works for a private military company. “Allow me to introduce myself, my name is Harold Wakefield and I was hoping we could talk about your work for the Orochi corporation.”
