  1. Doki Doki Story Time
  2.
  3. Anon tells his child history lessons but made to sound epic and Monika (Badly) tries to help.
  4.
  5. The room was dark, lit only by the candles you had made earlier that week with your son. The ruddy light set a mood that was darker than you had intended, but it would make the tragic tale even more wonderful. Anon Jr. was in his bed, Monika was lighting the incense she had gotten from Yuri. Frankincense filled the air, the storm outside brought sheets of dark rain, booming thunder, blinding lightning, and a smell of Ozone that would not be amiss in the Tragedy of the 20th Century.
  6.
  7. “Let me take you back, my Son, to the beginning.” Anon Jr. settled into his bed, ready for another story from his dad. Monika settled into her rocking chair, a blanket over her lap. The mood set, the story begun.
  8.
  9. “Since Rome began, there had been Germans. They had no identification beyond that they were not Roman and weren’t Celt, but they eventually became Germans. They- “
  10.
  11. “Tell it cooler, Anon. The dramatic bits only.” Monika interjected. “Fine.” You grumbled at her smug face. She was also entranced by how you talked, but she cut through you like a hot knife in butter.
  12.
  13. “Since the fall of Rome, the German states had been a 1000 little kingdom, most no bigger than a town. Certainly, smaller than our town, kiddo. For a thousand and five hundred years, they had all fought one another, all backstabbed each other, all been separated by petty princes. The only thing that had gotten them to halfway work together was when a man named Napoleon had set his sights on conquering the world.”
  14.
  15. Monika joined in, voice as grave as yours. “Napoleon had seized power, had taken up the fallen king’s crown and placed it upon his own head, and had become an Emperor in the age of Liberty. Millions fell under his control, and his iron hand guided them to conquer. Was he a bad man? Some would say so. I personally think that everyone should attempt to take over Europe at one time or another. Your dad has done it dozens of times in games. Ahem. The faraway kingdoms of Belgium, Netherlands, Hannover, Milan, they all fell to France. Eventually, Napoleon was defeated, and the German states returned to how they were before his rise.”
  16.
  17. Some striking violin music had been put on. “All except Prussia.” You continued. “Prussia had been the final nail in the coffin of Napoleon after his disaster in Russia, where thousands starved. They still find Frenchmen there to this day, in Russia and Poland. Anyway, Prussia had become a victor, and with the creation of the Concert of Europe, an alliance system was created to prevent any major wars from happening again that would lead to major loss of life.”
  18.
  19. Anon Jr squeaked. “Didn’t they go to war again anyway? There was a whole Crimean War, right? And where is Prussia? I’ve never seen him on the map.”
  20.
  21. “Very good! They did, but those weren’t wars liable to destroy much of Europe though.” Spoke Monika. “Prussia was a part of Germany until Poland took it, but that’s an entirely different Tragedy of the 20th Century. Or the Seminal Tragedy, whatever they call it. Maps change a lot, which is why your dad collects them. Remember that map he showed you, of the Holy Roman Empire? The big yellow and black one with all the little holes? That was Germany back in the day.”
  22.
  23. Anon Jr. shuddered. The music swelled sadly, good for mood.
  24.
  25. “Prussia had cursed luck, and only by the extreme ability of his leaders and men of every station had allowed him to continue. The war with Napoleon had run everyone ragged, and though they had won, the destruction of the HRE and on Prussia had been horrible. Towns wiped from the face of the earth, people with not enough in their bellies. Prussia had decided that this was enough. They needed even more power. With the rise of Nationalism, they had just the excuse to do this. Not just for themselves, but for all Germans suffering.” You illuminated.
  26.
  27. “Of course, this was just so all Germans could suffer equally under a Kaiser, but that’s getting ahead of the story.” Monika piped in. Thunder cracked intermittently. The scent of mystic energy filled the room.
  28.
  29. “After much hard work, deals, and not a few shows of force, a man named Otto von Bismarck told the German Chancellery that the only thing that would unite the German Peoples was Blood and Iron. The absolute madman then stormed out, and the Germans went about uniting. In a period of a lifetime, they had gone from merely a powerhouse to uncontested ruler of Europe. They had just smashed France’s teeth in when they had united, and Kaiser Wilhelm was coronated in the Hall of Mirrors, in Versailles. The only one who stood a chance against these upstart Germans was Britain.”
  30.
  31. “You said this would be a tragic story, this is pretty cool.”
  32.
  33. “Ok, Mr. Impatient. Within 40 years of this achievement, the 100-year peace of Europe would be shattered on one fateful day in June, in sleepy Sarajevo when a certain man was shot dead after a wrong turn was made. 10 Million men died because of the war. They were just soldiers, however. A hundred million more suffered, if only that. This was The Great War. It was the first of thankfully so far only 2 World Wars. In the clouds of gas and the flash of the guns, the modern world was born, the one that I was born into, the one your mother was created in, and you were born into. Billions have been trapped in this fate because of one man, Gavrilo Princip. What should have just been a mostly internal affair spiraled out of control because of another man, an Austrian who had decided that war was the only way to punish the murder of the Archduke Franz Ferdinand. Long story short, the very small group of men, just a handful, had thrown the world into the fires that saw Russia destroyed in the revolutions, the Ottomans, an empire lasting century, finally fall. It saw an entire generation of the world destroyed. We won, but at the cost of our souls.”
  34.
  35. “It was either be left behind or dictate how the post war world would be, Anon. Wilson did nothing wrong.” Monika stated, an enormous crash of thunder backing her words.
  36.
  37. “Well… Whatever! I don’t like him.” You pouted.
  38.
  39. “Well that was really tragic. Can I go to sleep now?” Anon Jr. asked. It had been a long night of attempting to teach history in a cool way, he seemed to have liked it. You and Monika exited the room after blowing out the candles and incense and went into the living room and cuddled on the couch, parental duties done for the night.
