They are the descendants of the beeponies who were violently driven away from the island many decades ago by a portion of the native population, and have returned to conquer the island back from its current rulers. The key to their current takeover is the Hunt. The Hunt is a complex system of Aura abilities that enables the queens to kill with ease. First, part of a victim's Aura is captured when they are stung by special bees imbued with Queen Toko's power. That bit of Aura is then taken to the Hunting Grounds an Aura Plane maintained by Queen Hurscurs. There, Queen Qaromarrow makes a game of hunting it down. When she finds it, she can capture it and siphon the victim's life-force from afar by draining their Aura.

Each tribe believes that it is the true descendant of the Windies, an ancient ancestral race, and that the other tribe is some kind of devil-spawn from the spirit world. In reality, both tribes are the result of a curse that the Crimson King, a powerful demon, put on the Windy Tribe, as revenge for defeating him when he tried to capture them to use as slave labor for his businesses. The curse compels the tribes to fight one another until one is exterminated, and if it is not fulfilled, then both tribes will die.
