- Grammar: present tenses
- - What tense is the paragraph about identity? simple present
- - What tense are most of the verbs about decoration? present continuous
- - Why?
- Present continuous describes something that is happening (in progress) “now” (including the moment a picture was taken as well as the extended present of “these days”).
- Simple present describes actions that happen regularly or repeatedly (such as habits and routines), or things that are “always” true, or states (non-action verbs).
- ---
- Form of simple present:
- + I live in Boston. She lives in Boston.
- - I don’t live in NYC. She doesn’t live in NYC.
- ? y/n Do you live in Boston? Does she live in Boston?

- I go to Boston next week. = I have specific scheduled travel plans.
- ---
- BREAK (until 11:30)
- ---
- Dynamic (action) and stative (non-action) verbs
- ---
- Dynamic verbs are actions that you can start or stop and which require some time (duration) to do.
- (You could say actions occupy your mind and/or body.)
- Stative verbs are not actions. You don’t need to take any time to be in a particular state.
- - Stative verbs (verbs with stative meaning) cannot be used in the continuous.
- ---
- Some verbs have stative and dynamic meanings.
- I think Boston is too cold. (think=believe is a stative verb)
- I’m thinking about my last vacation. (this is a dynamic verb)
