    Phrase - Related group of words without subject and word

    Clause - Related group of words with a  subject and verb.

            Independent clause - A group of words with a subject and verb that stands alone. For example: I went to school.

            Dependent clause - A subject and verb with a subordinating word. For example: If I went to school.
