- The uprising in Syria
- Since 15 March 2011 there is a revolution going on in Syria. You can’t call it a peaceful revolution though, there are like 200 deaths every day. The Syrian people want freedom, freedom that we have in the Netherlands and we make fully use of that. Freedom, which we have learned to value more because of the Second World War. We live in an era where such freedom is normal in the Netherlands, we can’t imagine living without freedom.
- Then I wonder, does it have to be like this right now? Do we have to be ignorant and pretend like nothing is going on in Syria? Do we really believe what we are told by Syrian state television and broadcast continuously their propoganda on our own Dutch television? Don’t we exactly know it’s the propaganda machine of the corrupt regime. It hurts me to see that the Dutch really think it’s a revolution of Islamic terrorists. Once you see that the youth have started the revolution, then you should know that they’re inspired by the West’s freedom and that they also want to taste freedom. But how can they believe in their revolution, even though there are more than 20,000 deaths in the recent months.
- I mainly notice determination in the Syrian youh, they want to live in a free Syria and now they know that they have been abandoned by the rest of the world, they have no one left but God. God plays a big role in their hearts, without faith they might not be able to survive in this revolution. Therefore I wonder, how the people who support Assad dare to call theirselfs Muslims. Someone who murdered innocent people, shouldn’t be called a muslim. A Muslim knows exactly what’s good and bad. He/She would never doubt between good and evil in those situations. Money and power drives people to madness. You can’t go so far that you kill your own people for power and money. Power and money brings you closer to God and not because God loves you, but because the risk is much bigger that money and power takes over, like you were possessed by money and power.
- As we saw earlier with Hitler, Gaddafi and other dictators. We now know that history has taught us that these leaders go to extremes. But why does the West act stubborn, and do not begin with a military help to stop the violence? Apparently because they fear that Assad nuclear weapons will fall in Iran’s or Hezbollah’s. This would be a great danger for humanity. But the real danger is ... we lose sight of humanity and we don’t give a push in the right direction in this world. As a human being, I want to improve the world through our acts. Acts that will prevent any kind of racism, discrimination, fascism.
- This can only be achieved by taking action now.
- I feel guilty for the numerous deaths which fell in Syria. And not because I’m part of the killing of people. But because my dream for a nice world is falling apart. Because there is ignorance prevailing among the people and our governments, which do not represent us. There are many dangers in the world, which are a threat to our humanity. Should we not take action? Are we really going to abandon people who fight for freedom and humanity? Can we really continue pretending nothing is going on in the world?
- The answer is obviously: NO. And I do not know why we never spend time during class to learn from mistakes that are made today by the West. We apparently have not learned from two world wars, and all the massacres going on in the world. Humanitarian rights are violated.
- The solution? Respect and accept each other.
