  42. A retired and newly widowed school teacher (MacLaine), receives a life insurance check mistakenly made out for 5 million instead of 50 thousand. Her and her best friend take the vacation of their lives, while being chased by the insurance company for the wrongly denominated check. Calamity ensues in a wonderful backdrop.

She and her best friend then take off to the island of Gran Canaria in Spain, to make the trip of their lives and at the same time become media sensations and fugitives from justice.

Shirley MacLaine and Jessica Lange play best friends but there is a 15 year age gap between the actresses and it shows.<br/><br/>In Wild Oats MacLaine has been recently widowed and is wrongly sent a life insurance cheque for $5 million instead of $50 thousand.<br/><br/>MacLaine hops it to Grand Canaria with Lange and go on a gambling and spending spree and MacLaine attracts the attention of dapper but forgetful businessman Billy Connolly.<br/><br/>The insurance company strong arm veteran investigator Howard Hesseman to get the money back. He gets hold of MacLaine&#39;s daughter (Demi Moore) and sets off for Gran Canaria to Lange and MacLaine.<br/><br/>Once they arrived they find that MacLaine has lost her gambling winnings to con men and plan to retrieve the money.<br/><br/>The film is a bit of a mess, as a comedy it is a misfire. You could guess they will attract the attention of a con man as it lacks originality and even the finale floundered.
  45. This film offers two good performances amidst a terrible screenplay and annoying characters. Shirley MacLaine and Jessica Lange play longtime friends who hightail it to the Canary Islands (where the entire film was shot) after MacLaine receives an erroneous insurance check for $5M. They get makeovers and meet up with a vague and really annoying man (Billy Connolly) who squires the ladies to a casino where MacLaine wins a bundle. In the meantime an insurance investigator (Howard Hesseman) drags MacLaine&#39;s daughter (a dour Demi Moore) along as he chases them down. MacLaine and Lange keep things afloat up to this point, but the already-bad screenplay takes another bad turn and becomes ludicrous. The two Oscar-winning stars are great fun, but the other characters as written are too annoying for the actors to salvage them. This film was in development for years and has a long list of actors attached to various roles. Could have been a lot of fun.
