- WHAT IT'S ABOUT
- ======================================================================
- Scrying is a trick in game that allows you to predict spells, particularly Force the Hand of Fate, with the Gambler's Fever Dream spell in the Grimoire. It is used to guarantee that you get a specific buff from FTHOF, allowing you to get big combos without savescumming that would otherwise be extremely unlikely to happen (for example combos involving EF from FTHOF).
- TLDR:
- If you cast GFD and it gives FTHOF, the outcome of the next FTHOF you cast will also be the same as the one from GFD, assuming you don't cast any other spells or switch seasons. Simply cast GFD until it gives a FTHOF with the effect you want, and then you can use that effect in, say, a combo. If the FTHOF from GFD didn't backfire, the next FTHOF is also guaranteed to not as well; however, if it is a backfire, it is not guaranteed, and you can use Resurrect Abomination to check if it is. If you have at least level 2 wizard towers then you can also do something called ascension scrying to hunt for rare FTHOF effects, which is buying 1 wizard tower and scrying with that at the start of an ascension, and then ascending to repeat.
- HOW IT WORKS
- ======================================================================
- First off, the result of spells are calculated based on (mainly) two things: your seed (resets upon ascending, stays the same within an ascension) and the total number of spells already cast. There is no randomness in this, so if you cast a spell at 100 total spells cast, and you reload and cast it at 100 total spells cast again in the same ascension, it will give the exact same outcome.
- GFD works by first incrementing the spell count, then casting a random spell at half price after a 1 second delay (in this case FTHOF). So, if you have already cast 100 spells, and then cast GFD, GFD will first increase the spell count to 101, and then cast a spell at 101 spells cast.
- If your mana goes down in between and you no longer have enough mana for GFD to cast the spell it was supposed to, then it will be cancelled (your mana will be refunded, but the spell count will still be incremented as that happens right after GFD is pressed).
- Next, the way that FTHOF works is that it casts the spell before incrementing the spell count, so, casting FTHOF after the aforementioned GFD will also cast at 101 spells cast, giving the same outcome as the FTHOF from GFD (assuming you didn't cast any other spells in between).
- Despite what the tooltip says, GFD actually has a 50% chance to backfire (or your regular backfire chance if it's higher), therefore if GFD casts FTHOF and doesn't backfire, then the next FTHOF is guaranteed to also not backfire, and if GFD does backfire then the next FTHOF has a 30% chance of also backfiring. (also, when scrying, make sure you don't switch seasons in the process, since FTHOF will give different effects depending on whether it's Valentine's/Easter or not).
- Here's an example with a table showing the results of spells:
- ===========================================================================================================================
- # of spells cast GFD FTHOF
- -> 100 FTHOF something Step 1: cast GFD
- 101 something Click Frenzy
- 102 something something
- ===========================================================================================================================
- # of spells cast GFD FTHOF
- 100 FTHOF something Step 2: GFD selects FTHOF as the spell to be casted, spell
- -> 101 something Click Frenzy count gets increased to 101
- 102 something something
- ===========================================================================================================================
- ... (1 second delay)
- ===========================================================================================================================
- # of spells cast GFD FTHOF
- 100 FTHOF something Step 3: FTHOF gets casted by GFD (after a delay), resulting in
- -> 101 something Click Frenzy a CF
- 102 something something
- ===========================================================================================================================
- # of spells cast GFD FTHOF
- 100 FTHOF something Step 4: cast FTHOF at some point in the future, it also casts
- -> 101 something Click Frenzy at 101 spells casted before increasing the spell count and
- 102 something something therefore also gives CF
- ===========================================================================================================================
- # of spells cast GFD FTHOF
- 100 FTHOF something Step 5: spell count gets incremented, we are now at 102
- 101 something Click Frenzy spells casted
- -> 102 something something
- ===========================================================================================================================
- If you were to cast multiple GFDs quickly, then, as seen from the table, they would all increase the spell counter immediately, but they would only give their spells after the 1 second delay. Therefore, all of the GFDs will increment the spell count before any of them resolve, so the spells that they give would all happen at the same number of spells cast.
- NOTE: you can also use GFD for telling what building SE will give, but it's not very useful
- Also, if you are savescumming, if you scry a BS you can reload before the GFD was casted, so you can get two BS's from GFD and FTHOF after
- EXECUTION
- ======================================================================
- Cast GFD until you get FTHOF, and then it will give you the outcome of the upcoming FTHOF. Thirty-nine max mana is the optimal amount for this in terms of mana regen.
- Note that if you get SE from GFD, you can quickly cast a cheaper spell like Diminish Ineptitude before it resolves to drop your mana below the amount needed for it, resulting in it cancelling and saving you some mana regen.
- If you get a backfire, you can check if the FTHOF will actually backfire or not by casting Resurrect Abomination outside of grandmapocalypse (the spell will fail to cast and not increment your spell count, but it'll give you a different message depending on whether it would've backfired or not). If desirable, you can also use the Supreme Intellect/Reality Bending dragon auras to up the backfire chance and possibly have it backfire when it otherwise wouldn't.
- If the effect is what you want, and for a backfired FTHOF if you confirmed that it will indeed backfire, keep it and don't cast any other spells, or change to Valentine's/Easter when you want to use the scry. Then, cast FTHOF whenever the time is right, for example during a combo.
- Another trick that you can do is to ascend, buy one wizard tower, use that to scry at the start of each ascension, and repeat when you run out of mana. (this is called ascension scrying). This is used to quickly recharge your mana, allowing you to scry far more often and find rare outcomes such as Sweet and EF much faster. Level 2 wizard towers are the cheapest for this, as they are the minimum wizard tower level that allows GFD to cast FTHOF with 1 tower, and level 10 wizard towers are the reasonable best, as they allow you to cast GFD and roll for FTHOF twice.

- ======================================================================
- (this assumes you are scrying an EF for an endgame combo, if you want a non-backfire effect preconfirming isn't necessary)
- Spell 1: Conjure Baked Goods, Summon Crafty Pixies
- Spell 2: Haggler's Charm, Diminish Ineptitude (cheaper than spell 1)
- ST is counted as a free spell, but it won't be if you will get a buff before it (CBG backfire, Pixies, etc.)
- 0. Ascend
- 1. Cast GFD twice and then RA quickly (RA will preconfirm if any resulting FTHOFs will backfire)
- 2. Depending on what you get:
- A. NOT (SE or Spell 1) + FTHOF or FTHOF + anything: go to step 4, if FTHOF is specifically unconfirmed also cast GFD
- (advance the number of spells casted to reroll chances of it being a backfire)
- B. Spell 1 + FTHOF: if FTHOF is specifically unconfirmed cast GFD (will result in FTHOF being cancelled), then go to
- step 3; otherwise, go to step 4
- C. SE + anything or ST/RA + Spell 1/Spell 2: cast GFD (if you got SE this will cancel it), then since the first spell is
- irrelevant do actions based on the 2nd and 3rd GFD casts (you will not have a RA preconfirm)
- D. ST/RA + ST/RA/SE: two free spells, go back to step 1 and repeat
- E. ST/RA + Spell 1/Spell 2 or Spell 1/Spell 2 + ST/RA/SE: one spell that will drain mana, go to step 3
- F. Spell 1/Spell 2 + Spell 1/Spell 2: two spells that will drain mana, ascend
- 3. Here, we go one spell at a time:
- A. ST/RA: free spell, cast GFD again and repeat
- B. Spell 1/Spell 2: not enough mana anymore, ascend
- C. FTHOF: go to step 4
- 4. What to do when you get FTHOF:
- A. If it's not a wrath cookie: ascend
- B. If it doesn't give elder frenzy: ascend
- C. If it's not preconfirmed: wait until you have enough mana and confirm it; if it's unconfirmed, ascend
- D. If it passes all of these: congratulations, you now have a confirmed scried EF, attempt a combo with it
- Note: if you have level 11 wizard towers, you can still preconfirm after 3 GFD casts, so you can do some more complicated strats with that (not recommended)
