- Hacked Fry Bread

- Ingredients:
- Flour, whole wheat 1 cup
- Flour, all purpose 1 cup
- Baking powder 1 teaspoon
- Maple syrup 2 tablespoon
- Milk, white 1 cup
- Cardamom 1 tsp
- Cinnamon 1 tsp
- Nutmeg ½ teaspoon fresh grated
- Salt, kosher ½ teaspoon
- For frying
- Oil, olive ½ cup
- Directions:
- In a large mixing bowl, combine all ingredients except the oil, and mix until dough is formed.
- Turn dough out on floured waxed paper or silicone mat and sprinkle with self-rising flour. Kneading dough and adding self-rising flour as needed to make smooth, pliable dough. Remember too much kneading makes dough tough. Cover and let rise in warm place for up to 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
- Cut and shape dough into 8 portions.
- Traditional fry
- In a large frying pan(cast iron best), or fryer, pour the olive oil to about 1 inch deep and heat over high heat.
- Fry dough about 1-2 minutes per side. It should be golden brown. Drain well on paper towels.
- Air fryer
- Coat each portion with oil, immediately before cooking. Cook at 400 for 6 to 7 minutes.
- Since these are more a sweet type bread, serving them with honey butter or cinnamon butter or even creme cheese would be most excellent.
