  176. After Max Shatto was found lifeless in the garden of his new home in January, his three-year-old body covered by bruises and claw marks, suspicion immediately fell upon Laura and Alan Shatto, the Texas couple who recently adopted him and his brother.

  179. In Moscow, protesters marched with portraits of the two young boys to support a Kremlin ban on adoptions by Americans and Russia's child rights commissioner claimed that the child was "killed" by his adoptive mother.

  182. The grieving Shattos suddenly found themselves the subject of a murder investigation at home and the poster parents in Russia for allegedly rampant abuse in the US of adopted children.

  185. "All I ever wanted was to be a mom," Mrs Shatto, 44, a former teacher, told The New York Times in her first interview since the tragedy. "All we wanted was a family."

  188. Mrs Shatto told the newspaper that she was left "completely broken", haunted by guilt after leaving the boys playing in the garden when she made a quick trip to the bathroom.

  198. She even feared that she had inadvertently caused injuries to Max by attempting to resuscitate him while waiting for the ambulance to arrive. "I kept wondering: 'Did I hurt my baby? Did I hurt my baby?' "

  200. Investigators in Texas have cleared Mrs Shatto and her husband Alan, 51, an oil engineer, of blame, concluding that Max died from internal injuries probably caused by a fall from a swing.

  202. They also said that Max's external injuries were the self-inflicted wounds of a mentally troubled child who tore at his skin and threw himself headfirst at floors and walls.

  204. Despite that official ruling, there are many in the couple's town who now shun them while Russia has demanded the return of their other son, Kris, two.

  206. Max and Kris were the children of a single mother who drank heavily. But the Shattos, who could not have children of their own, pressed ahead, spending about $50,000 (£32,000) to cover the costs of adopting the boys, despite some warnings about their health.

  208. "I saw them and I just started crying," said Mrs Shatto of the first meeting at a Russian orphanage. "When you've been waiting to be a mother for so long, well, they could have hard horns and we were still going after them. You hope for the best."

Will Ellis visited the creepy cell block, which still contained the remains of furniture and messages in graffiti.
