- Description: Van Alstyne beat, stomped, and stabbed James, a Vietnam vet, before robbing him of $16 as he delivered pizza in the 1400 block of Northwest 18th Avenue on April 17, 1990. According to court testimony, Van Alstyne confessed to the killing, and admitted to at least 5 people his involvement in James’ death. At the time of the slaying, Van Alstyne had been on parole 7 days after serving about 11 months of a 5 year prison term for robbery.
- Another man, Ricky Dale Allen, pleaded guilty to a murder charge in connection with James’ death, and was sentenced to life in prison.
- Allen, 35, died in prison on June 9, 1998, from an illness, said Michelle Lyons, a spokeswoman for the Texas Department of Criminal Justice. She declined to reveal specifics of Allen's illness, citing federal privacy laws.
