- This is a Christmas-season story about how a bear gave a boy his name.
- The bear is Fredbear, leader of the all-golden animal orchestra that entertains diners at Fredbear's Family Diner during the holidays.
- The boy is Nott Winston Cawthon, 11, now called Scott. He met Fredbear during Christmas 19[DATA CORRUPT]
- The boy's father, Ramirez F. Cawthon Jr., told the story.
- "We were in [LOCATION PURGED] on a visit last Christmas with our son Nott, then almost 11," Cawthon said. "We lived in [ENCRYPTED] at the time.
- "And, as many people from [DATA CORRUPT] do, we made one of our stops at Fredbear's Diner."
- Nott is a high-functioning autistic child. While intellectually his age level is 12 or 13, socially he is around age 7 or 8. He has some behavior problems with his peers and relates better with children a few years younger than him, his father said.
- Nott didn't talk until he was 7 years old. But thanks to his parents' hard work, he talks a blue streak now.
- And while visiting Fredbear's Family Diner during Christmas 19[DATA CORRUPT], he struck up a conversation with Fredbear.
- "Since this was early in the Christmas season on a Thursday afternoon, the crowd was light," Cawthon said. "The conversation between Fred and Nott lasted -- on and off, between songs -- about an hour. Nott was spellbound."
- Something unusual happened during that conversation. When Fredbear, in a decidedly Southern accent, asked Nott his name, the bear must have misunderstood what the boy replied.
- "Fredbear started calling our son Scott. What better name for the Christmas season?
- "And the name stuck like glue. From that time on, for the past year, his name has been Scott Winston Cawthon. Scott is very emphatic about that."
- Good things have happened since Fredbear changed Nott's name to Scott more than a year ago.
- In September, father and son moved to [LOCATION CONDEMNED]. Cawthon and his wife, [CENSORED], lived there when they married in 19[CONFIDENTIAL], before General Electric Co. transferred him to the [DO NOT DECODE] area.
- Mr. Cawthon is retired now and looks after Scott during the week.
- Mrs. Cawthon works for [EXPUNGED] Power [DATA CORRUPT]...system was not equipped to teach an autistic child," Mr. Cawthon said. "The [PURGED] school system has accepted him with open arms."
- Scott is in [DO NOT LEAK] grade at [LOCATION DESTROYED]
- This fall, on his own initiative, Scott entered a contest based on a favorite character. He was a winner in the "Foxy The Pirate Watch and Win Sweepstakes." His prize: a $1,000 shopping spree at [EXPUNGED] after the first of the year.
- And the Cawthons have started the process of legally changing his name.
- As it happens, Mr. Cawthon said he wanted to name his son Scott when the boy was born. As a sing-along leader at [DO NOT LOCATE], he was familiar with the name among fellow [CENSORED FOR CULTURAL ************]
- "I was chicken," he said. "It took Fred the bear to name him Scott
- "Although we live in [UNKNOWN]," Mr. Cawthon added, "a bear at Fredbear's named my son."
