  1. Writing sample: Morning mist blanketed the quiet earth, the sound of wind through grass and plant life only disturbed by the dawn chorus, waking up to meet their day. Them, and one wolfdog, stretching out his bulky frame and blinking sleep from blue eyes. Early to bed, early to rise, if you herd caribou.
  2.
  3. Taking the walk at a ground-eating amble, making up for slow steps with massive strides, he headed away from the pack's living area and out towards the livestock, ears pricking at distant animal lowings and bahings carried by the breeze. Birds and caribou, and mist still thick on the ground. He smiled.
  4.
  5. The figure he disturbed as he approached the penned caribou was small, unshifted, barely more than a pup, who leapt from the tall grass at his quiet approach and lowered its head and tail, though the tail wagged slightly. The dotted brown coat was familiar to Taseko, a young
  6. pup, nothing more.
  7.
  8. He crouched to be at nose level with him. "What are you doing out here so early?"
  9.
  10. The pup lifted his head and flicked his eyes towards the fenced herd. "Guarding the herd! Someone should."
  11.
  12. Taseko lifted his own head slightly and sniffed lightly at the air, picking up scents on the gentle breeze. Caribou, open fields, and the scent of Krokar. "Right you are," he said. "Someone does: Me."
  13.
  14. The pack scent was different, but the eagerness so much the same. Taseko remembered cold mornings when the mist seemed thick enough to walk on, slipping out of his family's care to go and watch the caribou. He smiled a little as the pup's head drooped, clearly
  15. expecting to be sent away for being up too early or out of its family's care. "I'm going to let them out," Taseko said to the downcast face. "You run back and ask permission from your dam. Then come on back and you can follow them with me."
