  1. Lindon had been forced to infuse his will into virtually everything he’d done since entering the labyrinth, and it was harder and harder to recover his mental energy. The hunger aura devoured even that.
  2. But he still focused on the manifested phantom of the Herald. He would be defeated eventually—he was constantly on the defensive against his four opponents—but their every exchange wasted energy.
  3. “Enough,” Lindon commanded.
  4. The technique was a contained construct of energy, and Lindon ordered that energy to empty out.
  5. It was well within the authority of the Void Icon, and the Herald instantly lost a chunk of strength. Yerin’s sword passed through him an instant later, and then Ziel’s hammer crushed him.

  9. Lindon aligned himself to the Void Icon. It had become easier this year, though it was still strange. While he touched the Icon, he felt everything around him as vessels that could be drained, material that could be consumed.

  13. Lindon stepped back, waiting for Mercy to wake up. She didn’t. Her core didn’t refill either, nor did her soulfire, though they should have been depleted by the same action that wounded her channels in the first place.
  14. Dross happily explained Lindon’s own thoughts, but Lindon didn’t listen. It was against the nature of the Void Icon to add. It was, inherently, the power to subtract. To remove.

  18. Northstrider’s strength was flowing out of his leg in great rivers, pouring into Lindon. The Consume technique had worked after all, he just hadn’t felt it.
  19. The Consume technique that he himself had taught.
  20. “Release,” Northstrider commanded immediately, but Lindon spoke at the same time.
  21. “Feed.” Their workings wrestled against one another, but Northstrider knew his would win. He was the strongest, and that belief was founded on his unequaled authority.
  22. He believed it until the moment Lindon’s working swallowed his, and the Consume technique devoured him from the inside.
  23. Lindon released his leg for a moment, but only to stand and get a better grip on Northstrider’s neck. The Monarch resisted feebly, but Lindon had the lion’s share of his power.
  24. Lindon’s body knitted itself together, wounds reversing themselves and bones crackling back into shape.
