  6. [18:33] Fulvus How does one calculate "racial resentment"? It says its based on 4 survery questions, what those questions are is very relevant.
  7. [18:35] Fulvus I'm not saying Trump supporters aren't likely more racist than Hillary supporters, because they most likely are, but "racial resentment" is such a stupid and needlessly accusatory term when you consider that what that entails is left purposefully vague.

  9. [18:39] Yewnyx i mean
  10. [18:40] Yewnyx it's not that stupid or needless
  11. [18:41] Yewnyx http://www.electionstudies.org/studypages/2010_2012EGSS/2010_2012EGSS.htm
  12. [18:41] Yewnyx also, do some basic research bro
  13. [18:42] Yewnyx https://today.yougov.com/news/2012/01/23/racial-attitudes-remain-powerful-predictor-obama-v/
  14. [18:42] Yewnyx it's not a term they just made up
  15. [18:44] Fulvus Do you know what the questions are? If not, I think that article being obvious clickbait where the actual questions are purpsefully obfuscated does mean that at the very least I'm not putting any stock into what it says, because that would make me a fool.
  16. [18:45] Fulvus Again, they don't define what that term MEANS. Do they tie in opposition to immigration? Affirmitive action? I need to see a firm explanation fo waht it entails, or else it's buzzword-tier and not worth caring about.
  17. [18:45] Yewnyx man
  18. [18:45] Yewnyx at some point
  19. [18:45] Yewnyx i trust academia
  20. [18:46] Elara to be honest, Yew, I broadly agree with you, but just saying "I trust academia" does strongly imply where you fall politically
  21. [18:47] Fulvus Well, you shouldn't. All people have agendas, and if you go out of your way to read stuff that confirms your own biases (EVERYONE does that.) it's important to actually think critically about what exactly the basis for what you're reading is, and whethe ror not it's sound.
  22. [18:47] Yewnyx you're joking but i am legit disgusted with this know-nothing anti-intellectual undercurrent that at least runs through america
  23. [18:47] Elara oh, we've got it here too
  24. [18:47] Fulvus "I have faith that they're right, and didn't look into it." is not a position I'm going to respect.
  25. [18:48] Yewnyx me neither
  26. [18:48] Elara the somewhat memorable "I think we've all heard enough from experts"
  27. [18:48] Yewnyx because that's not what i said
  28. [18:49] Elara there's a big difference between "there's a whole body of research that has developed and refined this set of concepts and tools, I'm just not an expert in them" and "I have blind trust in the high priests of academia"
  29. [18:49] Yewnyx trust isn't the same as faith, and i literally preceded that with looking into it
  30. [18:49] Yewnyx i said "at some point"
  31. [18:49] Yewnyx i.e. I don't suddenly say "I don't understand this therefore it's bullshit"
  32. [18:50] Fulvus I'll acknowledge that on some level I just assume everythign I hear is WRONG until proven otherwise, and I can get stubborn about it, but I still consider that a better point of view than the flipside. On that note, I'm not putting stock into that graph until I hear what Racial Resentment actually means.
  33. [18:51] Yewnyx is it so hard to read the survey i linked
  34. [18:51] Yewnyx jesus
  35. [18:51] Fulvus I believe that Trump's supporters are more racist than Hillary's, but that doesn't mean I like the tone of that chart if the meanings are not spelled out in plain terms. It's the same deal as when people report that women make 78% of the money men do even when it's bogus.
  36. [18:52] Yewnyx okay let's try this again
  37. [18:52] Yewnyx click http://www.electionstudies.org/studypages/2010_2012EGSS/2010_2012EGSS.htm
  38. [18:52] Yewnyx open it in your browser
  39. [18:52] Elara uh, the pay gap isn't bogus. the specific figure of 78% is debatable, but the gap is real
  40. [18:52] Yewnyx click any of the four quetionnaire PDFs linked
  41. [18:53] Yewnyx ctrl-f "racial resentment"
  42. [18:54] Yewnyx "I have faith that they're wrong, and didn't look into it." is not a position I'm going to respect.
  43. [18:54] Yewnyx okay that was a bit flamey
  44. [18:54] =-= Mode #Politics -o Yewnyx by Yewnyx
  45. [18:55] Yewnyx i'm getting a bit heated
  46. [18:55] Fulvus You sent me hundreds of pages of PDF's to sort through, it's kinda draconian to expect me to take a break for over 30 minutes to check through it all before I finish my thought.
  47. [18:55] Fulvus Sorry.
