- >Well
- >Charlie got what she wanted
- >Here she was now being taken seriously by the Demon who could help her
- >The Hotel's future and all the prospective saved Souls
- >Squaring her shoulders up, Charlie puffed out her chest
- >The subtle barb of her station wouldn't deflate her
- >"My Hotel is in need of...assistance."
- >King Dice's smile turned knowing
- >The failed business plea
- >He'd heard this one before
- >"We are having trouble getting off of the ground. Not just for a lack of funds, but also residents."
- >Charlie found it felt worse than expected to admit that
- >Yet she wasn't deterred and pressed forward
- >"We have enough exposure, that's not the issue. The brand's known enough its just...nobody takes it seriously enough. Like we can't give them what we promise."
- >This was just everything King Dice could have expected to be
- >A new business owner with a dream biting off more than they could chew
- >This was a classic if he ever knew one
- >Now King Dice's turn to clear his throat, he offered a sympathetic pat on Charlie's shoulder
- >"Because they don't see your credibility."
- >King Dice offered, Charlie perking up and nodding animatedly
- >"Exactly! If people just knew the Hotel does work, th-they'd come in droves! We wouldn't be able to fit them all there'd be so many!"
- >"Redeemed sinners free to go on to a better place!"
- >Charlie's eyes lit up like neon lights at the possibilities
- >Lines of Demons entering the front door
- >A conga-line of rehabilitated and Halo-wearing Angles flying out the back
- >Dancing all the way to Heaven
- >Hell's population crisis solved
- >Charlie's reputation forever cemented
- >"Too bad you haven't redeemed anyone."
- >With one good interjection Charlie's dreams deflated
- >King Dice tried hard not to look like he enjoyed pointing that out
- >"Yeah..."
- >King Dice patted a shoulder sympathetically
- >Time to throw the lure into the pond
- -
- >"If only you had proof of what your Hotel could do. Then how would anyone deny it was possible?"
- >Heavens above, thank you!
- >Charlie could scarcely believe there was someone who grasped what she was aiming for
- >Not even her parents had the inclination to work out how their girl was plotting to help
- >Heck, Vaggie struggled to wrap her mind around it!
- >"Girl I think we can work something out. You've got an idea in mind and need a way to make it happen."
- >King Dice guided Charlie along
- >The girl lost in thought briefly
- >A snap of his fingers and a table appeared between he and Charlie
- >King Dice situated himself nicely in his plush authentic roller
- >The finery of the table was Gold flake throughout
- >Images of Demons with their mouths wide open seen throughout
- >Reaching down, King Dice flung a drawer open which rocketed to the opposite end of the room
- >Before crashing into the wall, it bent at a Ninety degree angle straight upwards
- >Continuing along before coming back down
- >Stretching right until it reached Charlie's seat where it stopped abruptly beside her
- >Tip-toeing along, King Dice's gloved hand stepped over document after document
- >Locating the paper it was searching for, the hand plucked and tucked the paper under its thumb
- >Giving a salute to Charlie it zipped backwards soon followed by the drawer
- >Slamming shut as King Dice laid out onto the table a fresh
- >Clean
- >Contract
- >The inkwell and feather pen alongside the golden paper grinned
- -
- >"Now what we have here is a Contract my dear. Usually one's word is all I need but for such an occasion I figure you would want your own autograph on the dotted line."
- >King Dice slid the paper closer to Charlie
- >The power emanating from the document was giving the girl second thoughts
- >The Die wasn't her Father's #2 just because he amused the Demon Lord
- >King Dice was every bit the incarnation of evil as her Father was and if Charlie was honest, probably came as close to an unredeemable soul there could be
- >Seeing the sight of a hesitant signer, King Dice knew how to work his Magic
- >"Allow me to explain my dear. This Contract will give your Hotel the means not just to survive but thrive. You'll be pulling in mobs of Sinners to your door. The trick to your dream, Charlotte, is your framing. See, customers, because this is a business Doll, like to be enticed"
- >Mr. King Dice rolled his palm and a pink die ploinked out onto the table. Spinning on its axis until landing on a one
- >"You need something to really REEL em in! Make them come to you instead of having to go hunting for whatever sad sop will give you the time of day"
- >A fishing line dove out from King Dice's sleeve and hooked onto the pink die, yanking it back into the depths of his suit
- >King Dice sat his chin upon both his hands, looking Charlie down as she listened intently
- >"I'm talkin' about rebranding, girl. Work shopping from the ground up. You wanna empty Hell's halls and give this place a little elbow room? Make them work for it."
- >The wicked grin as King Dice stressed 'work' frightened, and excited Charlie a touch
- >Now she was beginning to see how King Dice had her Father's ear for so long
- >"Make em go double or nothing. They got something of value and freedom's the reward, make them pony up for it. A one way ticket to the Pearly Gates if they can go clean. If they can't? Hmhmh my Dear, after you have them sign one of 'these'."
- >King Dice held up the contract with smile of ill intent
- -
- >"Hmhmhm, they'll check in your Hotel, but they won't be checking out."
- >King Dice smoothed the document in front of Charlie out
- >The girl feeling a pit in her stomach as understanding dawned on Charlie
- >He was talking about denying those who came to her redemption
- >Permanently
- >Charlie snapped her focus back up to King Dice, a determined look on her porcelain face
- >"That defeats the whole point! I'm trying to empty Hell, not keep it full! How does e-enslaving Demons help me accomplish that?"
- >King Dice disappeared
- >Popping up right behind Charlie
- >The situation had switched round
- >Now she was in the plush luxurious chair
- >King Dice standing besides her
- >"Your Hotel needs help girl. Sure, you've got some dedicated employees right now. That Latin Minion of yours works round the clock. Trust me I know the type."
- >The Die's exaggerated wink made the Demon's cheeks burn but he pressed onward
- >"That's the kicker see? You don't have enough help. Think you can handle all of Hell knocking on your door with two Demons, a Radio Host, and a Fella of the Evening?"
- >"...I've got more than one Minion."
- >"Oooof course you do, Dear. But picture with me, imagine. What would business look like if you had, oh, an extra set of hands or five? Some Big Shot Demons to protect the Hotel, or help with rehabilitation?"
- >Charlie grew serious
- >As terrible as it sounded, King Dice had a point
- >The Hotel was horribly vulnerable and what was Charlie going to do with more unruly guests?
- >Wouldn't some extra hands on deck help?
- >Some muscle to keep trouble away?
- >The turf wars wouldn't be able to burn it all down
- >And some renown faces would attract others, Charlie realized.
- >"And why would people risk it? Why gamble it all when I'm offering it for free?"
- >King Dice just smiled as he always seemed to
- >"Hell is full of suckers, dear. What kind of show am I running here?"
- -
- >"People are slaves to their vices, my Dear."
- >King Dice flicked several cards out of his deck
- >Doing a loop in the air before sliding before Charlie
- >Angel Dust on a mountain of his namesake
- >Vaggie with her spear held before her and a mound of bodies beneath
- >Alastor and his words being broadcast to Hell
- >"They can't resist that siren's call. Her sweet sweet music enslaves them and draws them in and they love her for it."
- >King Dice leaned down, he and Charlie's faces now eye-level with one another
- >"If they could resist her they wouldn't be here now would they?"
- >Charlie didn't need to answer
- >She knew again he was right
- >King Dice's expression softened a bit
- >"Wouldn't get too bent out of shape about it. Your old man knew that well enough, your Father gave them all that first temptation to begin with. Started this entire operation down here with that Apple and some nice words."
- >Hard not to have a soft spot for the girl
- >She might have put a halt to Lucifer's old lifestyle
- >But she had the potential all her own
- >"Back in the day we used to make deals all the time with Mortals. Give em anything they please. He'd take any challenge they set and beat em at their own games. Ooooh your Father loved playing games. Never lost. Always knew how to pull their strings."
- >Charlie had to smile a bit
- >That was her Father alright
- >Hearing of King Dice's fondness of him set some of her worry at ease
- >A darker part of her heart was being tempted in ways it never had before
- >King Dice sighed tiredly
- >"But since we started filling up down here, no point in the Contracts anymore. Why bother when Earth could pack em in all by itself? Not gonna lie dear, I miss the thrill of it all. How debtors tried their best to beat the Devil at his game. Living the life we gave em only to come straight down to my Level from it. If we can bring some of that back and get a few deatbeats their Angel Wings, I say why not"
- >King Dice saw the glint in Charlie's eye
- >That's the Devil's eye
